Pardon me for being ignorant, but boots first is definitely not the right buy, even when randomed... I rather just save altogether and wait for the mana booster if you're gonna skimp consumables/wards/courier/branches/etc.

If you are confident that you can get a kill with Boots + Smoke + Branches/Consumables, you can get that FB and then use the FB gold to make up the things you would have started with. It requires some confidence in your ability to make the gank happen and depends a lot on the heroes on both sides in terms of how easy it is to make a kill happen with your lanes/enemy lanes. If you're just going to buy the Boots and go to lane as normal though, there's no point in having the Boots. You get the Boots to kill people.

im still not comfortable with the idea of a dev completely taking over a scene, paying salary and doing production like riot have done but i can see why. besides riot has infinite money to splash around so i doubt the esports side of things has the slightest effect on their bottom line and unlike valve or blizz, LoL is their ONLY concern. from a players perspective of course it would be lovely for valve like fairy fucking godmothers to swoop and immediately take care of all the scenes woes but we all know that isn't going to happen in thousand years. the pessimist in me really takes comments like Kuroky's to heart (after ti3 , if there isn't something big, a lot of us will quit) as well as looking at LoL's overwhelming grasp on the both major circuit inclusion and the NA market. Dota is really riding a lot on a) the numbers coming out of CIS b) hope that it'll take off in China in a huge way c) TI3 is gargantuan still the game isn't out yet (and is progressing at a fucking glacial pace, the price of valve's unquestionable quality) alas, it may as well be, the steam bot has tens of thousands of keys in it.....
