Dota is inherently a teamgame. Either you find others to talk about obscure things you can do with,(i.e. reading forums like this one) or you try to progress to 5 manning. You're not really progressing as a player if you don't properly coordinate with 4 other guys. Pubs are for a lot of people about fun first(picking whatever), and winning secondary.
If you don't know anyone who plays Dota, then go find some. Just message people and stuff. It's the internet, nobody cares if you message 10, 100 or over 9000 random people before you get 4 teammates together.
Spoonfed? Dota is now the only Esport without a ranking system, in this day and age its simply expected from a competitive game. It's not like I'm some crazy guy expecting new leaps and bounds in competitive gaming, simply parity with the competitors.
Parity with which competition exactly? The one that uses bushes and walls for terrain instead of high ground and trees?
Besides there is a number for team matchmaking. If you think you're awesome, good for you. There is only a limited number of things you can really show off in solo matchmaking, therefore any number for solomatchmaking is absolutely meaningless. You excellently ignored that part of my post, where I said GET A TEAM or be quiet.
If you really need a way to find your progress, look up your old replays and look for your improvements. That's how a lot of serious players track their progress.
If that's too much work for you, you can always think of your level as your progress. Rejoice, since your account level never goes down and you always progress.

I think he is referring to competition within the realm of competitive gaming, not just DotA type games. Regardless, even if you only look at competition within the genre, while disqualifying LoL, you'll still find games such as HoN that allows tracking progress.

There is a ranking system. It's just implemented differently than in other games. If you need a badge for your epeen i recommend other games.
Yep that must be it, it must be my epeen man, you should consider a degree in psychology. Couldn't be that seeing progressing back and forth is fun for some people, that's not it, I am really just sitting here raging because my epeen isn't being shown off enough.
Yeah that's it. You need a program to tell you that you gotten better you don't realize it yourself.

The argument that hon and lol do it doesn't mean dota should do it. I think it is a horrible design choice. Lol is even try to come away from it by removing elo and making league play like sc2.

Midas becoming the norm. I shall make a midas for every hero now! Even wisp, midas build. Wd, midas build.

I don't think he mentioned any specific form of ranking. Considering the phrase "Esport without a ranking system", it's only natural to assume that he is also referring to starcraft, in which case I don't see how hes advocating a strict public elo.
And while I agree that Valve shouldn't carbon copy ranking systems from other games, I think people sometimes go too far in terms of neclecting the value of certain features from other games, or atleast not considering if the idea itself or the execution was flawed.
It should be entirely possible to implement a solution that would be valuable to alot of players, while not bothering the vocal anti-solommr crowd all too much. Resulting in so called parity.

Let's not start this discussion again, this thread covered it entirely - DBR (Dotabuff.com Rating) There is nothing else to be said and it became quite boring to read about this topic.
I understand that you might find certain topics boring, but I don't see how my reply was innapropriate in the context of the ongoing conversation. And I'm not sure that that the thread you mentioned covers the topic "entirely", but I get your point.

Visible ranks, concede option, "MOBA", what's wrong with trent, etc. have all been done to death and are just rehashed discussions that never bring anything new and serve no purpose, because noone ever changes their minds. Even on the dev blog this kinds of topics are often closed, they just go in circles.
It's not specifically you, or at least I don't think that's what he meant, it's just not an argument worth having, specially in a general thread. If we must endure one of these "debates", let's at least go with treant. It's funnier. Or at least less terrible.
Zerogravity doing what he does best again. Announcing announcements. :D
"Alexander Kohanovsky @zerogravity_ua Statement coming out in 2 hours"
My bet is on the female Dota 2 team. Someone (I think dfs) said it in one thread here, and I think it makes perfect sense. If any team, I think Na'Vi could get a lot of mileage out of a female team. They now how to market and sell their players. Also announcing it now will give it the announcement the most publicity he could ever achieve.

Well, Na'Vi DO know how to market women to men (not sure what that says about the gaming community, though).
