At least a separate website could mean less people taking the trouble to check it, and the rumours of it being a Premium feature would basically kill it anyway.

Actually, Valve could probably make some precautions against easily mining out the results of games. I assume they're getting the files somewhere rather easiy, because a finished game pops up there minutes after it's finished. I'm sure Valve could somehow prevent them from tracking the games so easily.

I want Valve to take the game seriously and create a proper MMR for the people asking for it. Wasn't Valve the company who "cared so much about the community"? Look at the poll, look at dev.dota2.com. Daily threads there bitching about both MM and DotA2 not having a MMR. There's been what, 1 year of flaming Valve because of this? Do you really need 3rd parties to create something and be a failure? I mean, just look at Dota-League or Dotacash... DOTABUFF will be nothing different.

It's not piggybacking onto Valve's system at all. Dotabuff has always just downloaded the information from games and parsed them to find out what heroes/items/levels/last hits/kills and deaths and assists happened in each game, as well as which team won. What Dotabuff have done is created an algorithm to take all the information on games won and games loss and thus create their own MMR. They give you points every time you win, take away points every time you've lost. They know how many points the opponents have and thus can decide the average skill of the opponents, and thus can decide how many points to give/take away from you after you win or lose. It's basically very similar to Valve's own MMR system. The only difference is that Valve is choosing to keep theirs private, while Dotabuff is releasing their version.

Valve itself is giving out the possibility to check for every game of every player pretty easily.

The thing is, I believe Valve wants people to be able to check game stats easily, for things like possibly making Dota-Academy's job easier if they are able to automate the process or even DotaBuff itself, when used for it's previous purposes. Completelly removing the possibility of gathering match results would probally not be something they would do, even if they dislike other companies using it for things they don't really like.

So it being on separate website makes it much better automatically Wasn't LoL's equivalent also on a separate outside and still used quite often for this purpose? The more "laid back" aproach for Dota may be a diference though, with all the randoming and messing around compared to a ranked ladder that would ban you if you random. People should be less inclined to do it in Dota anyway, but I don't think anyone can say if it will be a non issue or just less annoying.

Or did, now I believe they use tiers in game and third party gives you a number. I think, I haven't played it for a year so I could be wrong

DotaAcademy is pro games, there's much less pro games, then pub matches. And I'm not sure, I think Valve might not be happy that they are starting paid subscriptions for the stat tracking. I don't think they should make it entirely impossible top view other games. But disabling mass downloading of pub results(or at least making it really annoying in some way), while not affecting normal people who just want to make stats of pro games, should be an easy task to do. Looking at this, it looks like Valve are fine if you use their product to gather ad revenue, but not when you're charging money. Dotabuff seems on the edge of this line, even if it's not exactly video content, I assume their stance would be similar.

Watching newcomers playing DotA is always super fun because they always do some random stuff that you also did back in the day.

I actually have a brother who is in the process of learning dota right now. We don't play together much (cuz unfun games with that much spread) but he has watched me enough to know some basics (boots, how to use a courier, don't autoattack, towers hurt). It can be pretty amusing watching him, but Husky's commentary made it much better. For the lazy, Husky has played 2 more matches on his Husketeers account; + Show Spoiler [Match spoilers] + a loss with lycan (still 5-2-1) and a win with lina (10-3-X)
