So I'm slowly getting into Dota2 after not really knowing what I've been doing for months. I like Zeus, he's simple and basic and that Ultimate is great fun. Is it worth getting re-gen items like the ring of basilius, or better to just buy mana pots?

Also any suggestions on any other characters that play similar.. just so I can maybe mix it up a bit. I've tried Drow Ranger a bit and Skeleton King, but not exactly to much success.

if you are new it is better to categorize yourself to what type of gameplay you want. Either you are suporting, ganking, farming, or whatever. And keep doing that until you are feed up with it...

As for zues, ring basilius isn't going to help you since zues spams a lot of spells. you are better off getting mana pots until you can afford mana boots ( arcane boots ) or a bottle.

You can also try Lina or Leshrac... :p

Lina and Leshrac aren't really noob-friendly. Those stuns are delayed and need some effort to pull off.

Hmmmm

Is the game still playable ping-wise if I choose US East from Europe?

As a crude rule, clarities/tangos/salves are mainly for the laning phase. After that, most players will transition to regen items if needed.

To put it in perspective, a sages mask gives about 60 mana/minute on a level 10 Zeus for 325g. This means that it will take about 10 minutes to pay for itself and it has the added benefit that it can't be cancelled and it scales with your base regen rate.

Edit: Arcane boots/bottle are a more popular choice than RoB on Zeus.

should be 150 at most

create a lobby, set the server to US East and start game if you want to check your ping

From the UK I can play completely fine on USE, USW is pushing it. I am quite flexible when it comes to ping though, anything below 200 and I'm happy.

I think jakiro is a really good hero to try out for new players atm. Various builds, and quite survivable even without many items, and hittin ice path is a good challenge, but far easier than lina/leshrac stun.
If you look for a hero similar to zeus, try out tinker, but with boots of travel and mass teleporting he isn't too straightforward.
Lich is of course always good to begin with, make sure you understand the principles of lanecontrol and denying ep/gold to the other team.
I would also recommend dragon knight as an easy-to-understand carry.

I would nominate skeleton king over DK for easy carry. 1 buttan < 3 buttanz.

Speaking of SK (leoric), soul ring seems appropriate for making sure you almost always got mana to trigger your ult. I got pissed off playing yesterday because I was off by 2 mana...

Good idea?

go Sandking! :D Together with zues they are both my first heroes in dota so i think you will like him too! basi is a great 'learner' item you can get it until you learn to not get it. use skill1 to last hit at first so you better get at least 1 mana pot with you during laning. Generally speaking manaboots is the best. and then you can go hex/agha or bstone, really depends on your game, most people hated zeus as a hero anyway (they think he is useless pfff).

Soulring is all you need on sk mana wise, I even like to stay with it late game to ensure I always have mana for ulti.

One of the most noob friendly heroes and simplest to use is morpling ( baring you don't try the stats morp tricks )... he pretty straight forward. problem is if you pick him, you team is going to expect you to carry them ^^ lol

I think night stalker is a good hero for newish players. He has a nice rhythm (in general you farm during the day/gank during the night), no complex mechanics and he's a tanky semi-carry who can solo most heroes during the first few nights.

Perfect hero to learn how to gank with imo.

I think arcane boots are better than soulring on sk in almost every situation. Upgrading to arcane boots cost almost the same as soulring and it benefits the entire team/gives you more move speed/larger mana pool.

Thats overkill. The AS from treads is far superior.

I would much rather have a soul ring as a panic button if i fuck up my mana management or get mana burned as opposed to mana boots which may be on CD and I don't think even provide enough mana to make his ultimate pop?

wtf no.

on the sk conversation, anyone who wastes money on mana items for leoric is a baddie. Armlet is all the 'mana' you need.
Iv played a lot of sk and I find that as long as I am very conservative I dont really have mana problems with him.

NS has a really delayed attack, and putting a new player in a position to dictate map control over the whole map isn't great. Also you're much better off pushing during the second day, not farming.

One of NS's biggest strengths is he can tank a lot, especially with vanguard. During day, that advantage doesn't go away, so you're better off pressing it by grouping with your team and absorbing damage (with the threat of activating night) than staying out of the game and trying to farm. Of course there's always exceptions.

Reminds me of the stat manipulation thread. Maybe you should always remember to buy an emergency robe of magi or two from the secret shop, then sell when you revive.

Then you play SK the wrong way, the real man play SK as the roaming carry, who comes to your lane, rapes , pillages and burns it and moves on. Need some man(a) to ma(i)ntain that 8 sec cd stun!
