So question about damage block mechanics. How do they stack (if they do)?

I'm only talking about items, I know some abilities give you damage block (Tide's), but it clearly states nothing stacks on top of that.

How about PMS/Vanguard/Stouts? I was in a game where I got PMS and Vanguard on Slark (don't ask me why), and it looked like I was blocking either the 20 from PMS, and up to 40 for Vanguard?

I had the PMS first if that matters.

I'll follow-up on this but pretty sure it'll check Vanguard first and if it doesn't block, it'll check the PMS.

They won't both block the same instance of damage (it'll be one or the other or neither).

PMS 100% blocks heroes, I guess your explanation refers to creeps/neutrals?

So from that, I'd assume that if a Melee hero is attacking you, you will always block 20 damage, but by 70% chance could block 40 due to Vanguard?

Yeah, assuming you get the vanguard after PMS. It will do the 70% check for 40 damage block from a hero otherwise you'll just get the 20 damage block from PMS. It sounds like getting PMS after vanguard makes vanguard's block useless haha.

Ah.. Good. Not so bad investment then.

You can always just drop both items and then pick up the PMS/Stout first then the Vanguard.

But Tide's Kraken Shell will NOT allow any of this?

Not stacking means you cannot get double absorbs, not that the items can't both be purchased. The highest absorb should always be taken regardless of what order the items are purchased. It is very common for a tidehunter to purchase a stout shield because he won't have a high enough level of kraken shell early on to render the item useless.

To clarify what a double absorb means it that even if vanguard and stout shield both rolled an absorb, only the higher would be taken (vanguard) so you would get a 40 damage absorb. Them stacking would mean you would get a 60 damage absorb (40+20). [all this assumes you're a melee hero]

I don't think this is correct. If you aquire a PMS post-vanguard on a melee hero, and don't drop and pick up the vanguard, I'm fairly sure you only ever get -20 blocks when being attacked by heroes. The PMS procs so the vanguard doesn't even roll. Can't test atm though.

Item pickup order doesn't effect it at all. The highest absorb is always taken. Dota2 Engine is smart. I doubt this was true on wc3.

Seems like an extremely hard scene for someone to break into.

I don't see what makes DotA2 any harder of a scene to break into based on that criteria. You might get noticed by a stack and start playing with them if you're that good, maybe you make friends with other soloers and put something together yourself... Or you can post in various team recruitment threads.

Mainly because games like LoL/Sc2 you have a ladder and high ranked people generally get invited to play with people based on their rank alone just seems dota lacks this aspect of community because of an esoteric MMR system.

But if you're good enough you'll constantly be Q'd against the best as well and can get to know them like that, even if you can't see your ranking it does not mean it's not there.

Merlini actually commented about something like this on his stream. He was talking and said that lots of the players he plays with/against are very good, but that 2 in particular ("m and his friend, murs") were "Pro good", as in he thought that they would fit well in reasonable pro teams. If you play in the very tip-top bracket with players like Merlini, they will judge your skill just by playing with you and if you are really that good, they will know. Also bulldog as everybody else has mentioned

Not to mention that DotA2 has SO many tournaments that allow amateur teams to give it a shot.

I personally don't see it as a hard scene to break into if you got the individual skill to do it. But individual skill isn't all, you need a team. I'd say finding a team is the hardest part, not breaking into the scene.
You could argue breaking into the scene can help you find a team, but yea, you just need to network well and you could end up like EternalEnvy, S4 and admiral bulldog. Players nobody heard of before who worked hard and proved that they had what it took.

I haven't tried to break into the scene or find a team myself obviously, so it's merely how i see it, i could be wrong.

bamboe was already on LLL at that time. Sing met him in pubs but he was already on a 'pro' team, so he kind of already 'made it' before he ever tagged up with sing.

You realise that LLL is in no way above any other group of 5 people that play in smaller cups. It's not a "pro" team.

Is actually way easier to get into the scene compare to pre-2009 or compare to sc/sc2. Anyone who can find a group of nice people going can try out some CW but nowadays you can go join some tourney straight away. They can be your friends, people from games that you played with or the recruitment places from big forum/clan/team. Is just that you need to have full commitment to make a team running ie this is not likely to happen on people with jobs/graduates or people who are in their final year/s of college.

Realistically, a team of 5 fathers in their 30s is possible to come out and win TI3 next year. All they need to do is start to participating and winning every tournaments from about 6months before TI3. Still a hell lots of commitment though.

is 2017, stop being lame, fuck's sakes. 'Can't wait for the rise of the cakes and humanity's last stand tbqh.'

haha!! I am watching sing's stream when Puppey asked that!!

For me it would be QoP. Been huge fan of her since dota1 and I can play her on any position!

Isn't LLL, lowlandlions? They've had professional gaming teams in many other titles, mostly famous for CS 1.6 but they are still a professional organization with real sponsors such as MSI, sennheiser, western digital, roccat, EA Sports, MadCatz etc.I have no idea how much if at all they supported their Dota squad but they are certainly more than 'any other group of 5 amateurs' based on their team name alone.

bulldog scenario for me would probably be windrunner. she's so versatile and she has fun abilities. can easily play positions 2-5 in pub and be successful, hell even 1 sometimes if team bad. :D~
