Then there's the issue of playing with players you have no clue what their actual level may be. Friends you met, inhousing, balancing teams, etc.

This is exactly the kind of mentality that i dislike from having a visible rating creates.

So you think you being better than someone makes you more entitled to playing the role you want? That having a higher number means they have to take the role that's left and listen to what you say?

Better than insta picking and saying mid or feed.

Except the people who do that are assholes that would do that with or without visible rating.

Except the people who use rating as a means of superiority would do it anyway with or without rating. Probably allows for more players to do it now than if it were implemented.

How can you use rating as a means of superiority when it doesn't exist in the game?

Because those players just flame others for being bad anyway?

To me it wouldn't be whether to support or not support, but perhaps what kind of support and how hardcore it will be. Of course you often get a sense for that through observing how someone lane, but it would be nice to get an idea before hero pick. I do agree it might not be unproblematic, but then again you cannot stop someone from picking whatever hero they want, only create a situation where you don't have to clench your own butt as hard.

It would be nice to at least see after the game some kind of average mmr of all ten, the same number they must use to sort the games under the watch tab.

I've played quite a few hours vs bots now, and I still haven't played an online game yet cause I'm so bad, lol. It's pretty intimidating not knowing what 80% of the hero abilities/items do. :<
I'm going to play support, I think... but the whole neutral creep pulling thing that I've seen support players do on streams looks super confusing, will I get raged at if I don't do that stuff properly? Any tips for a first time support player?

You shouldn't think that players will be better than you. Well, when you first play they will be but after enough games you won't always be the worst player in the game because of matchmaking.

Just buy wards and people will think you're the best pub support player they've ever had. That's pretty much the mentality around pub supports for you.

To stack, attack the camp at x:53ish and run away. To pull, attack the camp at x:16ish and run towards your oncoming creep wave. Just do it once or twice and you'll get the hang of it, easy.

To elaborate some on the "why" - you generally stack and pull to bring the creep equilibrium close to/under your own tower, so your carry can farm more safely. If you just pull without stacking, your creep wave will annihilate the neutrals pretty easily, and then you get two waves hitting the enemy around the same time, which ends up pushing (in some situations, you'll do this on purpose, but that's more advanced). By stacking once then pulling, you pull equilibrium to your tower without pushing afterwards.

If you're that new to the game I wouldn't bother stacking and pulling. If you're babysitting a carry I think you're better off just harassing the enemy making it harder for them to last hit while giving your carry some room, buy wards and help your team keep track of the minimap by pinging it if the enemy moves to gank.

You just need to keep in mind that your job is to babysit your carry (most carry are fragile in early and very vulnerable to gank), in order to do so you want to keep the map visible (aka with ward to provide vision), you want to give the optimal exp and farm to your carry/deny the oppo exp (ie not leeching his exp on lane as much as you can, keep the creeps near your tower by stacking and pulling) and there are many more little things you can do to help your team. Good supports can win the game straight away with wards (obviously up to certain skill level) while anyone can last hitting good with good team.

If you are new to the game chances is that you are at 'normal' skill level ie everything works. Go pick the heroes that you like and have fun do some experiment skill/item build imo. If you want you can get someone to help you from the adopt a noob thread or i can show you around in a custom how to stack/pull/ward etc just pm me

so i just started playing a few days ago and am starting to get a decent hang of things. a few questions:

1. i keep getting this bug at the beginning of some games where i can not buy any items. i did a google search and couldn't find much besides people saying its a known bug. does that mean i just have to keep re-logging every time it happens?

2. i am having trouble with "stutter-step" micro. in SC2 you can time your attacks and movements so that you can start moving almost before the attack animation starts. this doesn't seem to work in dota2. do i just have to wait until i see the attack animation? or is this type of micro not possible and is it better to just right click a unit and let it be? maybe my timing is just off because i'm so used to micro'ing roaches? i feel like i've missed a bunch of potential kills because of this and its very annoying.

3. i've had trouble in a solo lane vs lone druid and his bear. i'm just not sure what i'm supposed to do vs it. they can just send the bear after me and its so strong + they can recall the bear + the bear adds so much damage for last hits. i've faced this twice and i kept attacking the bear since it was an easy target but it just tanked a bunch of damage and i essentially did nothing. should i just try and focus my attacks onto the lone druid itself and try to avoid the bear? do i need help? fwiw when i'm playing solo its usually with invoker (so many options, so much fun!).

1. I dont know.

2. For ranged hero, when you see the projectile leave your hero; you can cancel the rest of the swing animation and move to the next one.

3. Essentially, you want to hit the LD himself because he is fairly weak before his ultimate.

2. All heroes attacks in dota are consisting of 3 parts: frontswing, attackpoint and backswing. Frontswing is when you "charge" your attack and cannot be cancelled without cancelling the attack, attackpoint is when the attack happens and backswing is the animation after your attack. Each of these timings are unique for every hero and it is the backswing you want to cancel and move instead during that time. If you do it perfectly you can move while still having the same attack speed, but you can not increase it, meaning even if you cancel the backswing the next attack will not begin any earlier than it would have had you not cancelled the backswing.

EDIT: http://wiki.teamliquid.net/dota2/SvenYou can see the timings as "Attack duration" to the right. Though I just noticed that it says wrong on liquipedia for most heroes and states all heroes have 0,4 +0,3. Until it is fixed you can use the dota2wiki, it has the correct values.

Some examples:
Lina 0,75 + 0,78
Drow 0,7 +0,3
Sniper 0,17 + 0,7

The smaller the first number is in comparison to the latter the easier it is to stutter step

I highly suggest that you don't limit yourself to a role, for the main reason that I don't think roles like carry, support etc. exist at lower levels (though it depends how good you are). It would be better to just play what heroes you feel comfortable and practice your overall skills like last hitting or map awareness. Of course, practicing warding can also be considered one of the skills to practice.

And you shouldn't get raged at for not pulling properly, I've done it quite a bit at higher level games nobody seems to notice or care. If you do choose to play support, just practice things like checking for runes, where to place wards, and practice pulling timings. Positioning is also very important.

1. Not sure what bug, I know for myself there are a lot of items you can't buy from the suggested/recommended list that you have to lookup in the actual shop to buy

2. You can't really stutter step in Dota 2 most heroes have a lengthy attack animation. It is easier with heroes like Huskar, Drow who can orb-walk (manually cast their orb then move after) but for all heroes it will not be as effective as stutter step micro in SC2 unless your hero is a lot faster than the enemy's.

3. There are few heroes that can do well against Lone Druid in a 1v1 he is quite difficult to handle, especially at level 5 when he gets entangle. I suppose focus on last hitting/denying as you can't really harass the hero without taking a lot of damage. Harass the bear when not last hitting/denying just for good measure. Lone Druid is very susceptible to ganks so maybe call for help if needed.
