In a lengthy bonus video interview held back from Assembly Winter 2011 Team Liquid's Ret discusses his trips to South Korea. First to try his hand at becoming a BW pro and then for his GSL adventure in SC2.
Brood War section topics: -What were Ret's expectations heading to South Korea after NonY and IdrA? Did he dream he could become the first of the modern day foreigners to get into televised Proleague games? Are all the players who qualify for OSL/MSL better than foreigners? Did Ret see his appearance on 'Hyungjoon becomes a progamer'? Would it have been out of the question to have picked up any Korean before going? Was it naive not to have practiced ZvZ much prior to his trip? Would winning that last Courage have kept him in Korea?
StarCraft II section topics: -Despite his high reputation amongst the foreigners his performances in GSL so far have been short, what is his assessment? What does he know about his next Code A opponent? How significant is BW experience in SC2 compared to WC3? Were MC and MVP simply players who didn't get the chance to shine in BW? Would Flash and Jaedong dominate if they switched over? Does Ret get frustrated seeing peers like IdrA and Jinro in the penthouse of GSL, Code S, while he's stuck down in the basement of Code A? What will the impact of the foreigner house be on future GSLs?
The interview can be viewed at SK Gaming. Also, if you haven't already, check out the older interview with Ret after he won assembly.
Every time I see a picture of ret I'm reminded at how much weight he lost, god damn good for him. I wish I had the conviction to put off some pounds like that.
Surprises me to hear Ret of all people say that Flash is so good because of his multitasking. That is not the reason at all why he's the most dominant player of all time (well, it's a factor, but not the biggest one).
Awesome that they asked Ret about BW. TSL2, SC2, and Beta came up so quickly after his stint at eSTRO I kind of felt that chapter hadn't been closed. There was still a lot of stuff to know about it.
He looks really tired on that pic I think Ret is Code S material, he's just unlucky with draws i guess And luck is not on his side this season either facing most likely Code A winners but i think he can do it. Good luck ;d
Flash and jaedong should stay in sc1 for a while. I mean why would they give up their 300k-400k$/year salary LOL
Just throwing this out there, but GSL Code A is hardly 'the basement' of anything. Code A is a tremendous achievement, and Ret should be proud of this accomplishment.

Well his good management of economy and macro also requires multitasking . So it's not entairly untrue . His knowledge of the game and multitasking is why he is dominating . He won't be able to dominate if he couldn't execute his attacks the way he does and macro perfectly at the same time .
Ret seems like such a nice guy. It's a shame he hasn't done better in the GSLs. I mean, he has done better than any other foreigner besides IdrA and Jinro, but his potential is just as good as theirs. It's a shame that it just didn't work out for him.

It of course requires multitasking, but Flash's 90% winrate in PL does not come from him being that much faster than everyone else.
Aww, too bad he didn't know his opponent was actually Jjob (or whatever you want to call him). Would've been nice to see what he thought about him and his chances.

in fact, Flash's multitasking is not even really better than many of the top players, or even worse. Kal, Bisu, Jaedong, Baby and Really have shown off better multi-tasking skills than Flash (Baby actually destroying Flash in a multitasking war in a TvT). Flash's true dominance comes from his perfect micro and his game-sense/planning being ahead of the rest of the scene... and even when the rest of the scene catches up to him, he will still have his godly micro (In a sense, Fantasy could be as dominant as Flash if it were not for his sometimes suspect decision-making and weaker micro in TvZ)
Much love to Ret and SK for giving us an insightful interview. I honestly wish Ret still played BW, perhaps he would be able to make something happen. Best of luck to him in GSL!

I agree but I think you guys are reading too much into his answer. I'm sure Ret of all people can appreciate how good Flash is. It was just an on the spot answer and he said something that would be more easily understood by people than something more abstract. It's not like Flash's multitasking is actually second tier ... people make too much of a few games where he may have been slightly out multi tasked but with Flash everything gets magnified. When Flash out multitasks opponents we barely notice because he's just winning like he always does.
I thought Ret's answers were incredibly honest and truthful, at all times keeping a good perspective on the reality of the Korean scene vs. the foreigner scene yet still demonstrating his passion and committment to the game. Well done Ret!

Ya it was super confusing to hear such a stupid remark from such a good player.
Maybe he meant prioritizing, like flash always knew exactly where to focus at all times.
Awesome interview! Really enjoyed hearing Ret's take on everything. Hope he has more success in SC2 soons.
@Everyone talking about the flash multitasking: If Ret says Flash' multitasking is great, are a bunch of nobs going to say that's wrong? Flash has amazing multitasking, it's just not his only strength, and yes other players can match him in that, but they can't overcome his decision making in combination with that. Reminder?
Wise player very wise player ret. I was in England during Finland Assembly sadly so i couldn't follow it but it's nice to see him have some success ! Teamliquid FIGHTING!!
Ret has such an even-handed manner and fairness to his answers in interviews that it's really a treat to watch. His answers are always so considered and lacking in either hubris or false-modesty. A really nice balance!

Nobody noticed/paid any attention to him mentioning that TL Korea is going to pick up Korean lessons together? Sounds like long term plans to me! Ret always stated that he only planned to remain in Korea for a few months and even that depending on his GSL success, which is terribly dependent on luck (opponent, matchup, maps, before Code A it was brackets...) and he's also "handicapped" for being zerg... The prospect of him leaving Korea early always made me so uncomfortable, so I was happy to hear that.
