Day 1 Recap by heyoka
The first day is over, and the field has been narrowed to just 24. Several of the favorites are still looking good to take it all, the winner's bracket is currently stocked with talent. Those at 3-0 include Tyler, IdrA, drewbie, qxc, as well as last MLG's finalists HuK and Kiwikaki. Notables fighting their way through the loser's bracket include Gretorp, Incontrol, TT1, Slush, Select, Lzgamer, Ret, Kawaiirice, and White-Ra. You can check out the brackets here and here to see who your favorite will face in the morning.
Noteworthy games:
- LastShadow apparently plays zerg for ZvP and ZvT, and racepicks T against zerg. After IdrA shut him down quickly in game 1, he won game 2 by thor dropping the natural at 12 oclock. It briefly looked as if he may take game 3 with 2 hidden barracks, but ended with him saying "gg you're sick good" after IdrA scouted the proxy just in time to stop the marine/marauder push.
- White-Ra vs Kiwikaki game 1, Kiwi opened with DTs and was stopped 1 hit shy of killing Ra's nexus. Ra came back into the game, only to have several DTs warped into his base thanks to a pylon on low ground, and after they finished off his nexus it turned into a huge last stand with all of his probes and army vs Kiwi's probes and army. Kiwi won by the thinest of margins thanks to good forcefield use.

It looks like Idra is using a Qsenn. He swapped the keys from the black and white ones, Jangbi-style. And I think the mouse is a Logitech mini optical, like zerious wrote above.

I couldn't get the stream to work with firefox, but it did work with IE...just a headsup for those who still have stream issues

Yeah a MLG logo, forehead and monitor corner is about all we currently have for video coverage.
edit: mlg always has trouble in the beginning but makes up for it for the most part, I have learned to not get upset with the beginnings of MLGs anymore.

damn atleast the first game will be decent (hopefully if ret has actually been playing) i just hate that i have to have the stream sound on so i can hear when it starts when im browsing different tabs but the stupid music they play is just awful =/

No, I mean the stream actually loads, and you can see them doing camera setup. They aren't casting the RO64 though, so I guess it'll be another half hour till they actually show something.

I spent the $10 and HD does not work says signed in successfully but plays normal stream with the "Upgrade to HD" button still there so I would not bother with that either.

OK so I switched from FF to IE (ew) and I managed to sign in and stay signed in but the quality is still pretty poor, it looks like some one put a bad sharp filter on.

there's nothing to figure out ... it is intentional ... probably to enhance the "real video" part and adjusted while the casters where on camera but they have probably forgotten the effect it has on the ingame footage ...
to clarify things for the non-media designers or what ever ... if you lower the size of a picture f..e. you loose sharpness and clarity ... you can compensate this by boosting the micro contrast which is called sharpening ... looks awesome and crisp when done right ... tends to look horrible when overdone ...
pictures: regular screenshot resized to 500xX ... left pic is unsharpened (blurry) ... middle has a little sharpening ... right is MLG ^^

We are working out the technical difficulties, the internet is DC is a bit wonky. If you are seeing Halo3 on your stream just clear your cache and it should be ok.

What about the actual quality of the SC2 stream? Right now, an interview with InControl and JP is showing and this is fine, but the actual footage from in-game is really, really bad. It looks like its being captured through a camcorder and then over-sharpened

Even after the upgrade... it still seems extremly grainy for a 2.2mb stream... something else might be going on. I'm on a 20mb pipe so I am def getting it full power.

Can u fix the sharpness settings on the freestream? I cant see anything! I know its hard to motivate you guys to fix the free service. But this is borderline unwatchable!

Rben, appreciate the increase in bitrate but it looks like the problem is somewhere around how you are recording from the Observer PC. The feed seems like it might be overly filtered / processed too

HD is definitely better. It looks so much better. Thanks.
It's not very grainy at all, but some grain should be expected since its live and you'll probably encounter spikes, which causes grain.

Come one red you can do it... I like that all the Liquid members still have a shot at winning MLG. I hope one of them can upset and defeat Idra, which will be very hard. He is sick good ^^

I have a question. In the losers bracket round 3 it says TorcH beat his opponent 2-1, but it's his opponent who advanced to round 4. Is that an error in the bracket, in the r3 result or did TorcH get disqualified because his hair is too imba?
I'm really rooting for him, he was such a cool guy at the GSL, really liked his interviews and the shoutcasting with Tasteless..

Guys, please stop asking for VODs and replays in this thread and instead do some searching around. You will find out pretty quickly that VODs may take a while to be released, but replays from Day 1 can be downloaded via "match info" on the official bracket.
I'm headed back out to the event around 13:00 today to watch the matches, meet some more TL peeps, and update the twitter feed. (There will be less to report on now that most of the matches are finished, so hopefully I can watch everything.)

Is anyone else getting a lot of pauses... like 5 seconds or so on the HD stream?

i have gained respect for select in the 6th game where he did an amazing job to win by better micro.
He is really good wow, never really noticed him but he has both great macro and great micro.

Its about the amount of agression he can put on while keeping up macro, microing those units in 3 locations at once, and not losing everything. Thats about what it takes to kill a toss with a handful of colossus XD

Yeah I asked him about it, he said that since his keyboard is a PS/2 he had to use Tasteless's keyboard, who bought a black/white one and yanked out the keys individually hahaha, it looks so awesome though.
He also says thats the samsung keyboard every korean uses since they'rel ike, less than 10 bucks each
