Sony Ericsson is the new sponsor for GSL. It is the 4th largest mobile phones manufacturer in the world.

Sorry that this OP is so low-content, but there's not much more to say.

What, Intel isn't big enough for you?

But it's nice to see a new face, has Sony ever sponsored a league yet? I don't recall. I like seeing new faces

I was already wondering if they would announce a new sponsor this week. I was afraid that they maybe didn't find a new sponsor when I saw the first new banner for season 2.

I am kinda glad that they changed the sponsor now, I already got tiredof hearing Tasteless announcing Intel and TG-Sambo over the last couple of years^^

Wasn't there a rumor about a big european company wanting to sponsor a spefific player?
Could sony ericcson be that company, as they have shown that they want to target the esport community with their advertising ?

So they are the big european company who wants one of the top-top-player from BW to go over to SC2. As they said in the rumor threads.

That's awesome that large name brand (with great recognition in the America's too) are willing to sponsor this. This is pretty big for E-Sports in general.

Intel are a much bigger company than Sony Ericsson, and also obviously computer related. While its great to see other big multi-national companies doing this, Intel would be better.

Not really.

Intel have been sponsoring esports forever and will continue to do so but it's good for the growth of the game to have new companies jump on board, ESPECIALLY ones that aren't directly related to computers or computer gaming. No major sport is entirely reliant upon sports equipment manufacturers for sponsorship.

What he said. For example what's the realtionship between McDonalds and sports, because they basicly sponsor every sport.

From what I recall, Sony Ericsson doesn't have a great presence in Korea, so they are trying to break ground I guess.

Gillette and Panasonic were in similar positions when they decided to sponsor the Ongamenet Starleague for Brood War years back. Gillette was the last foreign OSL sponsor in 2004, Pringles (Other weird or notable e-sports sponsors? Coca-cola, Baskin Robbins, You Are the Golf King, a p2p program of ambiguous legality) was the last foreign MSL sponsor in 2006.

I have the same Sony Ericsson model Bond has in Casino Royal (bought it before!) and I love it, especially how they stuck with the brick-model instead of the one you open and close, prefer it.

And Sony Ericsson has as much to do with PS3(Sony) as it has to do with building Radio towers(Ericsson).

Which is to say nothing.

Isn't Galaxy a Sony Ericsson phone? Cause that looked pretty cool to me. With Android I believe. If I hadn't just bought a HTC mobile, I would probably have looked to that one.

I do wonder what happened with Intel. They withdrew, or did SOny Ericsson overbid? Can't have 2 main sponsors? Don't know much about how those things work.

Galaxy should be a Samsung phone. AFAIK, the Xperia X10 series is only Sony Ericsson line to have android.

SE probably overbid Intel for the main sponsor. If they allow everyone to have their name on the GSL, it'll get too long.

Why not? If companies are willing to back the things I love, I'll at least give them a fair shake next time I'm at the register. Notice, he said "try" and not "buy".

i would imagine with the full backing of blizzard, gretech/gom will have no issues securing big name sponsors.

The exposure for such companies is worth more than money.... brand recognition is the key to survival these days.

My shiny new SE X10 android phone is coming next week! yay! And yes u can watch the VODs on it

Could sony ericcson be that company, as they have shown that they want to target the esport community with their advertising ?

This was exactly my first thought when I read the thread's title.

Also you guys shouldn't confuse Sony and Sony Ericsson. It's like saying Activision is Blizzard!

GOM needs to get with SE's android branch and design a streaming app NOW!

I find this very interesting. Are SE phones in wide use in Korea? I know that Korea is one of the few countries other than the US to have a widespread CDMA cellphone network, yet in the US you can't get a SE phone with CDMA bands.
THIS was your PLAN?

I've had my current SE phone for like 4 years, and I'm very pleased with everything except the SE exclusive port. I hate it when companies try to monopolize stuff... I'd rather have the mini-usb, so I was thinking about giving another phone company a chance... but now I have to reconsider yet again

I think it's actually better for global e-sports for it to not be a Korean company. Other large Western/Japanese companies might take notice and be intrigued. I also think it's cool that it's not a traditional computer company like Intel as other's have mentioned, because it's a bit more mainstream and less niche, again helping other companies get interested, and maybe even getting the attention of people who like the brand but haven't been interested in e-sports/StarCraft 2.

You can check on detailed information on the various SE phones over at gsmarena.com. I think the Xperia X10 and X8 models are the only ones that use Android. Their earlier smartphones tended to use Windows Mobile.

General FYI, Intel's revenue is 3-4 times bigger than Sony Ericsson's.

Not that this has anything to do with the size of the sponsorship but I'm just saying.

agree.
or even better, have tasteless and artosis view through the korean obs and just commentate from there.

Then that would be like truley awesome casting !!!!!!!!

edit:

BIG QUESTION
The prize pool has been announced prior to this huge event. Does this mean
1.) they have already found their sponsors and are revealing them season by season
2.) they are finding sponsors for every GSL while the events are happening? what if they can't get a sponsor for GSl 3 ?

That's awesome!

An internationnal company like this sponsoring the major SC2 event, it will probably open the door for a lot more companies who didn't want to risk it. I think it'll help esports in general, really nice news imo

NICE!! Ericsson is globaly known for the quality of their network around the word. Hope they can share a litlle bit of it to the GSL live stream. I already bought my S2 ticket and hope quality will be there!

Anyway this is a good news for e-sport and the future of the GSL. Except Gillette and Coca (and that was long time ago) we had no major foreign sponsor in Broodwar competition.
In fantasy proleague it is a question of skill and strategy. Obviously I am missing them ^^

but having big sponsors doesn't mean they can stop making money from the tournament. the HQ stream + VODs are a package that comes together as a monthly pass. if they remove the VODs from that package(make them free), it loses a lot of value for the customers who are paying

Cool!

For the people who are saying this is the start of big western companies investing in e-sports, we had Coca Cola OSL back in 2001.^^ Many big companies have sponsored a BW league at some points, the problem is that they tended to stop taking interest after one tournament.

There is really no risk anymore. A big company like Sony Ericsson just don't make stupid mistakes in this regard. This sponsorship just really shows you how consolidated the Sc2 steady growth is.
