Our very own TLO advanced to the main round of GSL 2.

I decided to translate an interview done by Fomos.kr with TLO. (Korean source)

http://fomos.kr/board/board.php?mode=read&keyno=111068&db=interview

Bit ironic that I am translating an interview that was probably done in English originally.
If Fomos decides to give TL the original interview transcript in English, then please feel free to delete this translation of mine.
(I would appreciate a short message confirming it so, however =) )

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'TLO' Dario (Team Liquid) advanced to the main round in second consecutive season.

Dario advanced to main round in GSL Open Season 2 elimination day #3, held in Sin-Do-Rim Techno-mart Intel E-Stadium on October 11th, once again seizing the opportunity to show off his play to Korean fans.

- Your thoughts on advancing to RO 64

Dario: I am very happy. A bunch of famous players getting eliminated scared me, and I can't believe I advanced to the main rounds.

- How was elimination round in comparison to the last season's?

Dario: Even though it was more difficult, there wasn't a huge change. Last season's elimination round was much easier.

- You got eliminated at RO 32 last season

Dario: My goal is growing along with my skills, and I hope to get to at least RO 16 this time.

- Did living(practicing) with oGs benefit you in a significant way?

Dario: It was great help in increasing my skill, and I liked it as everyone's nice and have good relationship with each other. Instead of just getting helped, I think I am helping them out too, forming a symbiotic relationship.

- Any thoughts on joining a Korean team?

Dario: I have strong loyalty to Team Liquid. (laugh) It's a team I really like, so have no thoughts of leaving it.

- Any player you want to head-to-head against in main rounds?

Dario: Would be an honor to play against Lim-Yo-Hwan (Slayers_Boxer), but I'll be sure to give it my best whoever my opponent may become.

- There is a lower number(ratio) of foreign players advancing compared to last season, what are the thoughts of foreign players?

Dario: I do not believe that is because of increased skill-difference between Koreans and Foreigners. Many famous over-sea players did not participate, and players like myself and Greg Fields (Idra) are not with a pro-team. I believe there will be a better result in season 3 if pro-players playing in Europe participates.

- Your unique playstyled gathered a large fan base in Korea, any word to your Korean fans?

Dario: I am very happy that you guys like my games. It is a big honor for me to have Korean fans cheering me on. Despite there being many famous players in Korea, I am thankful to have them support me.

- Any other words?

Dario; There will be more players participating (in tournaments) from Team Liquid.
I do wish you guys will continue to watch out for our team member's games.

I doubt the interview went like this. It's important to realize for everyone that English interviews translated from Korean done with a foreigner will most likely have a bunch of inaccuracies that slipped in somewhere. Can't take too much from them.

Well considering that three foreigners that belong to the better players of the western scene (though arguably are not really top-notch) failed to qualify I find it hard to believe that there is no increasing skill gap between Na/EU and Korea.

You are forming conclusions based on a sample of two, of which one has only been in Korea for a few days. I assume you followed statistics in school so you can figure out how shortsighted that is. Please don't do things like this it is very annoying for everyone.

haypro really hasn't done anything as of late in terms of being a competitive zerg, jinro failed to qualify before, and artosis really isn't of the same caliber as some of the players in the tournament. and then a bunch of wouldn't it be fun foreigners who came over and didn't qualify just like alot of the wouldn't it be fun koreans.

So i'd give jinro the most likely chance of qualifying of the three "big" foreigners (Jinro, Haypro, Artosis) and he still hasn't adapted to korean style yet. i figured haypro wouldn't have a shot as a zerg unused to korean playstyle (since you need to be comfortable with what the opponent is doing as a zerg), and artosis, eh he can just cast the damn thing and be awesome that way.

So we are 2/2 on the foreigners Who actually have a shot at it. Haypro will get alot better by season 3 and be able to make it then, ret will have issues, huk probably will make it.

There just are alot less foreigners who are familiar with korean sc2 which has a bunch of different timings, and for zerg especially that takes some effort to overcome.

Also, Go TLO ^^

you could say that there is an increasing skill gap between korean and nonkorean sc2 scenes. but its not because nonkorean players practiced less or played less well than last gsl. it is because many extremely good players missed gsl1, so the competition has increased for the korean participants of gsl1 just the same.

Look you really can't compare the number of Koreans and foreigners unless you take into account the number of each that entered the competition and the percentage of them that qualified for the ro64. Looking at it this way you see that the foreigners actually do it better as the Koreans.

So as an example:
500 koreans entered the prelim and 62 qualified = 12.4%
5 foreigners entered the prelim and 2 qualified = 40%

The only realistic way to determen if there is a skill gap between the two is by having the 100 top foreigners enter the prelims and the 100 top Koreans and see what the percentages are then.
And on top of that the prelims should be held in Kenya or something like that so both groups had to adjust equally to a new and strange culture.
Life is to give and take. You take a vacation and you give to the poor.

I don't wanna offend anyone but my take on the situation is this:

TLO and IdrA are 2 of the top non koreans (maybe number 1 maybe not...) and both performed very well in the first GSL neither being totally outplayed in any way.

Jinro/Haypro (perhaps artosis but I dunno how good he really is) are good players but to my knowledge they're hardly the top non koreans neither has performed very well in any tournaments lately though I'd love to see the liquid guys storm the GSL and take it all. Jinro and Haypro just don't seem like the best to me, good? sure but far from the best inside or outside of korea I can only hope they will rise.

So saying that 3 of the better players of the western scene failed to qualify is perhaps an overexaggeration while they are good none of them have been at the top in sc2 at any point to my knowledge.

I think the situation will be much more clear with future GSL's especially HuKs arrival seeing as he is definately one of the top non koreans but since players like Select/QxC/Dimaga are not entering the GSL it seems unfair to assume the western scene is falling behind already.

Currently the US/EU pro scene is at least as active as the Korean's, and the number of players is more important too.
So though i do think the RTS heritage is stronger in Korea, which leads to more trained players, i really don't think the foreigner are out of the game yet.
Though I'm sad for Haypro and Jinro, they pretty much just got there and should improve, plus, they are very good, but not the best (but i hope they'll prove me wrong fast). On an other hand, Artosis spent a lot of time casting matchs, and i don't think he trained as hard, or had as a strong focus as the "pure" players.

So for GSL3, we can hope for more TL qualifications (especially Huk), and maybe some other new foreigner. But currently TL is the more GSL focused foreigner pro-team, and it should really pay in the future, let's just be patient and cheer for TLO (and IdrA too btw)

I think the main difference between Korea and NA/EU SC2 scene (other than coaching/pracitcing know-how) is the number of pro-players and the kind of support they get (funding for clans, bigger cash prize for tournaments).

NA/EU has to find a way to attract major corporations, make ESports a viable sponsor material.
If there is a way to do that (I'm sure it won't be a single-step process), it'll be possible to attract more pro-players, bigger competitive SC2 scene in NA/EU.
Come get some

- There is a lower number(ratio) of foreign players advancing compared to last season, what are the thoughts of foreign players?

Dario: I do not believe that is because of increased skill-difference between Koreans and Foreigners. Many famous over-sea players did not participate, and players like myself and Greg Fields (Idra) are not with a pro-team. I believe there will be a better result in season 3 if pro-players playing in Europe participates.

-I don't think there now is a bigger skill gap between Koreans and foreigners, most people, except us Liquid guys and Greg who participated, are not really pro-gamers but many no-names, so its hard to judge how it would go if other Foreign big names would come to the GSL. (I think more would qualify)

- Any other words?

Dario; There will be more players participating (in tournaments) from Team Liquid.
I do wish you guys will continue to watch out for our team member's games.

-You will see a lot more of Team Liquid in the future, so stay tuned fore more!

Grats Dario. Can't wait to see your games. GL

He is. He got sick right after the first day, so he's recovering, and he'll post his materials soon. Never doubt Artosis will do his best to provide first-hand coverage for us nerds.

About the interview, Korean fangirls cheering for TLO would be so amusing! *fingers crossed*

Yay, TLO ftw! I hope you will make it far!

Too bad that Jinro and Haypro failed, but tbh, seeing the results of the prelims so far, I have to see that it is a rough competition that allows no mistake. But yeah, there is always the next season so maybe the TLguys including HuK will have more luck.

No. If you look at the main GSL2 thread, there is a list of players who have qualified/notable players eliminated/notables who have yet to qualify. RainbOw (Hope Torture) is listed in the last category, so he will be playing tomorrow.

As for Jinro/Haypro/Artosis not qualifying, they aren't really in the top tier of foreigners to begin with so I don't think most people expected them to qualify anyways. They're good solid players, but they're not in the same league as Huk, qxc, MorroW, KiWiKaKi, SeleCT, Dimaga, etc.

"symbiotic" is one of my favorite words

TLO sounds like such a good guy... loyalty, cheering on his friends, promoting his team and team mates... I hope you achieve beyond your goals TLO!

I love you TLO! I tried emulating your sexiness but I can't because you're the only one who can do it!
I don't think I've ever wished my opponent good luck prior to a game. When I play, I play to win. I hope every opponent I ever have is cursed with fucking terrible luck. I hope they're stuck playing underneath a stepladder with a black cat in attendance a

I really hope that TLO's skill management has increased so he can perform to his true potential. The harass-micro based play seems to leave him in a huge timing hole where the other player can just macro an army and walk him over. [[i.e. last GSL and some recent events]]
I don't need luck, luck is for noobs, good luck to you though

TLO! Just make sure to check for cheesy builds and/or proxy and you'll do just fine! Hyperdub was a massive tool.

I agree with TLO, it's as someone that starts with an i and ends with a dra mentioned in another thread before. work for it, fine tune, practice, commitment. no one becomes pro over night.

Congrats TLO

I don't want him facing off BoxeR just yet though...a little bit down the road...also does anybody know when we can purchase the season 2 ticket for GomTV?

Because when I purchased mine, I wasn't able to get the premium "HQ" until they read my e-mail that I sent regarding my payment to them.

Class act. You are awesome TLO.

Between you, BoxeR, IdrA and hopefully NaDa (not to mention the excitement of discovering new heroes like Fruit Dealer), I am totally fine with the 20 bucks for the VODS. Good luck man!
