What has so far only been a rumor has now confirmed officially. Lim Yo Hwan will be entering the SC2 leagues.
In an exclusive interview with Chosun, Lim speaks his mind. He will be officially announce himself as SC2 progamer starting this GSL season 2.
His latest decision is to live up to the promise he made to his fans that he will stay as a pro-gamer into his 30's, and he emphasized his eagerness for new adventures.
"Progamers who play for money has his occupational obligations to excite his fans", says Lim. "I was only able to so far disappoint them since my return from Airforce. I have no intentions of repeating that mistake and I will pursue new challenges and keep chasing the dream I wanted to achieve."
31st of last August, Lim ended his contract with his former team, SKT. He explained the troubles and difficulties he faced. Although Lim was not contributing to the team in terms of league wins, SKT offered Lim very comfortable terms and were very understanding of him.
But that was the thing that put a burden on Lim's mind. When Lim wanted a televised match, the team would allow it, but without hesitation due to Lim's inability to win. Lim's dream of showing his fans a man in his 30's playing actively as pro-gamer was beginning to fade and he had a lot to think about his future.
In truth, his decision of transitioning into SC2 was made a long ago, but as the deal between Korean E-sports Association and Gretech got sour, the possible confusion Lim's move to SC2 might cause have worried him and prevented him from making an early move.
Lim emphasized to his fans "I thank my fans for staying truthfully and waiting for me although I have been keeping to myself about SC2 and the decision to enter GSL. It would have been impossible without you."
Lim also spoke of hardships after starting on SC2. The community aspect of SC2 and the friend system felt like a burden on Lim, so Lim had to play the game alone without adding anyone as his friend.
To improve his game it would have been better to communicate with other players, teammates and friends but Lim could not.
On his B.net accounts, Lim said on his suspected ID's "ManofOneway" and "Slayer". "They are both my ID", said Lim. Both the ID's are listed as top players on the B.net thus he is expected to perform well in SC2, almost at the level of his prime.
In closing, Lim wanted to send words on his mindset on entering GSL, and to his fans.
"By entering this GSL Season2, I will be stepping my first step on a new field of challenges. I wish to be one of the pioneers of new era of SC2 which holds infinite possibilities and growth.
As I start my life in SC2, although I will try my great best, but there will be times of disappointment and letdowns. I want you to cheer for me regardless, but not just for me. I want you to cheer for others who also have set their foot on this new starting point. The new field of challenges... The very word "New" have put great strengths in my mind.
I want this fire, strength and excitement to be felt by all the fans and I will try my best for it. This is my ultimate goal as a Pro-gamer in his 30's, different from my goals at 20's. I haven't quit as a Pro-gamer. I'm merely moving onto SC2."
To continue his dream as a Pro-gamer into 30's, Lim concluded the inteview by stating that he is simply returning his pro-gamer license, as opposed to 'not renewing' the license.
Nada is also joining OGS.

On a sadder note, Spirit_moon has been eliminated while Lyn has made it to Ro64.

P.S. Boxer is going to play his qualification rounds tomorrow.

2 accounts with very nice win ratio and points record is... absolute brutality.
|
I'm happy and at the same time sad
A very hard decision.
|
Nada in OGS? The TL players are gonna be starstruck in the practicehouse.
|
I am afraid that Boxer ll be crushed by Michael Schumacher in F1...
Anyway, GL FOR BOXERRRRR!!!

I'm assuming it's because most people have to play like mad to get those point records on ONE account - I'd enjoy playing on two accounts, but I wouldn't dare try to maintain both in the top 50 charts.
|
having 2 different accounts results having 2 different threads on TL I suppose?
btw there was a thread with full article translation. why is that one closed and these two short (other one is 4 sentences) are still open?

Funny that both Manofoneway and Slayer are in a division lead by Boxer, who is not actually Boxer.

OH MY GOD OH MY GOD

As much as it would be great to see him return, I don't think he'll do as well due to age. IMO NaDa would do better in SC2 than him.
Hope I'm wrong.

schumacher is failing in F1 after a comeback.Think that is what he means, difference between F1 and SC2 is that in F1 you are 80% dependant on engineers building a decent car, while in SC2 it's 100% player / driver.
|
Now the million dollar question...
Which team is he joining?
I recall ITR referring to the "one-who-should-not-be-named-here" on one of his interviews, thanking how he perfected his strats for him. I thought this was boxer and maybe he will join STARTALE lol
|
Whats funny is that Boxer is in the group F1...

I have no idea why the other one was closed, but these two were posted very shortly ago. The admins here have gotta be human too, I'm sure they're not staring at TL 24/7.

I think he's saying July is a Bonjwa too.
Which is almost true. July's fans coined the term for him, but then he never 'earned' it.
|
More meant oov, and it's confirmed that he's playing it, but not competitively at the moment.
But if you want, you could nearly call July a Bonjwa(never earned it officialy though), so it would also make 3.

Boxer's message to the fans ( sorry my korean's a little rough ^^; )
"Through the upcoming GSL Season 2, i'll be stepping into new horizons. I want to be remembered as one of the founders of SC2's history which will develop boundlessly (the game).
Also, through SC2, i only want to show entertaining matches to the fans. However, even if my results are sometimes disappointing, it would be nice if people look beyond wins/losses and see the effort and endeavor. I would like for you to also cheer for all those who recently declared their move to SC2 and are standing at a new starting line. A challenge for a new field... the word 'new' has always flamed my passions.
I will strive to transmit this passion to the fans and unlike my 20s, this will be my ultimate goal as a 30-something progamer and something i will always work toward. I'm merely switching from SC1 to SC2 and this in no way is my retirement as a progamer."
edit: oops didn't see the edited-in translations in the OP. oh well ^^

I was not wearing my Depends this morning when I logged onto TL.net. I now am both shocked, soiled, and embarrassed. The authority this man wields is astounding in our small but growing nerd circle. This feels like an official stamp on the game (to me) stating, "that's right folks this game is now officially awesome."

Pro League is invite only and in oder to be a Pro gamer you need to have 60% winning rate in matches Boxer he couldn't wait for his status revaluated or he was afraid he will fail also? I mean the Nal_ra the "old boy tv serius" failed to reach 60% winning rate and he is out.
In end GSL is a place for players that can not have 60% winning rate need it to be a Pro and this is the truth.

ManofOneway had over 70% win ratio for awhile in Top100, which is very hard to see on Korean bnet. I guess his gaming skill hasn't died yet!

He's not playing for the money though as he states. He just loves E-sports and want to show that the older generation still can be awesome.

(july aint considered one due to lack of a period of dominance) i think iloveoov is still coaching SKT.... im pretty sure savior is wrapped up in court hearings and i think he is banned from anything related to e-sports (i think it is only kespa sanctioned events he is banned from, but hmm maybe he can play sc2 ^_^) jaedong and flash are still playing bw... so I AM SAD T__T BOXER, I WILL NEVER SEE YOUR SUBLIME CONTROL, SLICK STRATS... it is just sad
WoW after the unqualified ex pro players and the banned corrupted? I bet Nal_Ra can join also failed to be a Pro.
|
Wow, thats awesome news. 2 account with very high win%s - cant wait to see him in ro64 (assuming he will qualify)
|
geriatric friendly sc2 welcomes its gsl2 champ! absolutely no doubt boxer is going to take it.
|
GO BOXER! GO GET THEM TIGER!
|
AMAZING news, wow never thought he was "Slayer" too

Starts banging rich actresses around.
He also makes money on endorsements.

omg Boxer
I'm not surprised he made up his mind a long time ago. I remember Artosis did a video tour of the SKT house and interviewed Boxer and he said that he had an important announcement to make about his future that he would make later on in the year. It's clear that was referring to this switch.
Good luck in the GSL Boxer!

O_O I wonder if he'll make another team.
|
Lim Yohwan fighting! Let's just pray to the jesus that he makes it past qualifiers so all the noobie fans like me can finally see the Emperor on tv.
on a more serious note, is there any news about what team he is now affiliated with? it seems like he's obviously quite good at the game, with such good winrates on both accounts, as well as going toe-to-toe with both IdrA and TLO, but I have a hard time believing anyone can do well in the GSL without having a legitimate team to play with (unless your ID is DaviT, and you cheese your way through interviews and games alike ^^)
|
Lim is back, and the fans too !
|
Love it! Will watch his matches very closely!
|
Wow! I go to sleep last night after completely fanboying over NaDa joining oGS, and wake up to see Boxer finally confirming his switch! GOODLUCK BOXER!
|
can't wait to see my sc1 hero perform
|
I wonder what tema BoxeR will join
We also need a BoxeR and NaDa fan club so we can follow their games :D
|
This is so exciting! My dream of seeing Boxer return to glory comes one step closer to reality...
|
Hopefully Boxer will put together an actual player's association that speaks for the rights of players before the inevitable corporatisation of SC2 progaming comes about, however much it differs from the SCBW system there's still going to be significant sponsor pressure to ignore the issues that heavily effected BW teams (specifically with regards to b-teamers).
Also totally awesome that he's playing and I wouldn't be surprised if he ended up at oGs or more likely started his own team. I imagine it's fairly likely if the latter occurs that Oov will switch when his contract is up for renewal as he was still relatively mechanically strong in those Versus matches.
|
Gooooooo Boxer! Can't wait to see some more innovation in tank play, drops, and the likes.
|
|
Getting geek chills just thinking about boxer qualifying for GSL 2 and Tasteless going "Alright so at the 3´oclock position we have slayers boxer spawning as the blue terran".
OMFG
|
so who is that BoxeR in rank 1?
|
i hope he starts his own team. it would be more epic and add to his legacy.
|
I think the ability to macro a lot easier in SC2 combined with his creativity and brilliance, he really does have a legitimate chance to make it far in GSL. Not saying I think he's a favourite to win or even finish top 4, it's just exciting to think he does have a chance to get far.
|
When I read this, my head exploded, and I was curious and surprised how calmy the community took the news.
Perhaps people are to young. Correction: people are too young; so they would not remember. Nothing wrong about it, but they missed The Emperor, and there will never be another one, and no, Huk is not the one. IF somehow would take up his mantle, a protoss is out of the question, it must be a Zerg.

He's getting married to a relatively successful Korean actress.

I'm just wondering, Korean netizens are calling NaDa a traitor and all kinds of bad words, what do they have to say about Lim?
|
Why is this in community news t.t can't believe I missed it.
|
I feel really sad for BoxeR but I am so excited to see him play and I really hope he becomes a dominant player and not start off sc2 on the same page he left BW on.
and sucks whoever is named BoxeR on the korean server stole his name...
|
I suppose this is good news for most, but I honestly don't expect much from him. NaDa is much more likely to succeed than Boxer.
|
I'm so happy, but then I realize I'll never see a BW game by Boxer any more, and I'm sad.

Yeah, I watched the TL weekly replays. Boxer's APM is pretty low compared with TLO's while NaDa's is significantly higher.
Still, it's Boxer. We should cheer for him.
|
Yay! :D Glad to see Boxer confirming his switch over. Kekeke.
|
I KNEW IT. i was saying all along BoxeR was playing on multiple accounts, and i was right! though half jokingly. I wonder who plays BoxeR (the actual name BoxeR)... is it BoxeR too?
also finalizes my switch to Sc2. BoxeR and Nada! though weirdly, i generally dislike terran players, but BoxeR and Nada are like my favorite two pros.
|
"I know I said I'd show you guys some cool shit when I'm in my thirties...but I just cant play BW anymore...sorry gang GOOD NEWS though, I've found a game thats so much easier that I CAN show you some cool shit"
seriously though I dont expect him to do well. He may be the emperor but I dont think at the ripe wizened age of 30 he can cut it with the younger faster kids
|
so did boxer or tlo win that game ? :D

I would like some more SC1 zerg to transition. At the moment, Fruit and Dimaga are my main men, but if I were to ever see Jaedong move to SC1 (IIRC, he said he is already planning to do so once BW dies down), I'd absolutely fanboygasm, as Jaedong was the one who got me into the competitive Starcraft scene in the first place.

also, tushin?

I'm excited to see Boxer playing SC2, but seeing boxer leave SK Telecom T1 is like heartbreak. .
What the hell is SKT1 without Boxer...? That's just..incomplete.

July was the original Bonjwa before they created this defininition for the Bonjwa line. Bonjwa was his nickname before any of these "line" and "pedigree" appeared.
I would not say he did not earne it. It's quite insulting to him. It's like calling WarHammer40k rip off of Starcraft.

Although he was never called Bonjwa the same way, Boxer NaDa etc are.. the guy still won a Golden mouse.. which even Boxer didn't do. So credit where it's due, the guy was a monster.
|
Very sad that July is playing terran but it does make sense since he love ultra aggressive, low econ, mirco intensive style of play. Plus SC2 muta isn't the same as bw.
SC2 terran is make for boxer.

Boxer vs NaDa in the gsl2 finals anyone?! Prepare for epic games!

The exception that proves the rule.

Sick stuff. Will make watching GSL2 that much more interesting.
|
Great that Boxer made it the RO64. Seeing Boxer play live again will be epic
|
omg boxer made top 64..time for nada hehe
|
GL to boxer! Will definitely be watching GSL2 now...
|
Wow only 8 pages haha. Expected like 50+.Seems like the majority is a little sad like myself. At least we can see some televised games from boxer again but in the wrong game
|
Ahh, finally some good old PG's to start taking the top of the leagues. Go Boxer!
'Your old school T from sc/bw inspired me, although I never really got that good"
edit: also ... age really doesn't matter. Considering Age and Treachery usually beat Brute Force and Vitality.
IMHO , I think he will pull something that none of us expect, and just like how he changed sc/bw he will change the way we play sc2.
|
This guy was literally a god back in the days.
So fun watching him play and see where he will end up
You got my cheer brotha!

Speed what the heck u talking about? Apm? Apm is memory not speed nothing do to with age lol..

IIRC, Cool had fewer than 200apm consistently and managed to stomp everyone as the most micro-intensive race. Boxer's got a chance
|
so if Slayer and ManofOneway are BoxeR. then who is under the "BoxeR" id on the korean server as whoever that is is doing very well for themself.
|

To add to that, what about Alex Valle or Daigo? I think it's really sad to see TL members crapping on SC/BW veterans moving on to SC2, while veterans in other progaming communities are well revered.

It makes me so happy to see that BoxeR is still around and still playing. This guy is seriously such a hero of mine. When I graduated from high school I wore a T-shirt under my graduation gown that said Lim Yo-Hwan Forever.

hell of a news
gogo boxer fighting

I was sitting at my chair with my face in permanent happy mode when I saw the BoxeR v Jinro and BoxeR v TLO games.
Can't believe those guys actually managed to get a game on him!
Not because he's better at SC2 than they are (he clearly isn't) but if I was TLO or Jinro I would be shrieking like a pre-pubescent school girl too much to concentrate on my macro.
|
This is the best news i've heard all day. I wish Boxer all the best, he is a legend and I hope he destroys everyone.
Boxer fighting!!!!
