Welcome to the first TeamLiquid 20Q20A! Realizing that the Starcraft 2 community is the union of numerous RTS communities, we noticed that we hardly know anything about a number of the top players in the scene. For those of you coming from Warcraft 3 for instance, are unlikely to know anything about the former SC players winning things in Starcraft 2. Conversely, those of you from the Brood War community hardly know anything about the gamers from other communities. We decided a good way to begin bridging the gap is to begin doing a 20 Questions, 20 Answers style interview (like what was conducted on fomos.kr).
The format is simple - we ask a Progamer 20 Question about anything and everything, they respond back with 20 Answers, and you read the result! Another unique thing about this interview style is that the previous interviewee gets to pick the next person to be interview and gives them a question to be asked. For future 20Q20A, we will also be asking some community questions for the next progamer.
There isn't anyone more appropriate to kick off this brand new interview series than SeleCT. He has recently just won both TeamLiquid Opens as well as a number of other weekly tournaments. He is one of the strongest Terran players around at the moment. He used to play Warcraft 3 Professionally before switching to Dawn of War where he won back to back WCGs in '05 and '06. Now, he plays Starcraft 2. Let's get to know SeleCT a little better...
1. What is the significance of “SeleCT” as a nickname? It is just exactly what it looks like SeleCT. Actually, I made my nickname SeleCT for no reason haha. One day, when I didn't know any English, I was trying to make an account on bnet and I was just looking at my monitor thinking and there was button named SELECT. but I also think quick thinking is really important in the game which has a similar meaning to select.
2. Why did you change from WC3 to Dawn of War, and Dawn of War to Starcraft II? I changed from war3 to dawn of war because some bad things happened with MBC game's war3 league. After I won the DoW WCG twice, my main goal was to quit the game and study in USA. I was studying well until the sc2 came out :D now.. I just have fallen in love with sc2
3. You’ve won both TLopens and you won the DoW WCG twice. Your fans want to know what the secret to your success is! Play, and play. To win something, there is nothing more important than the effort.
Select after winning the Dawn of War WCG for the second time 4. Who or what would you describe as your biggest influence(s) and why? Nothing really influences me ^^;
5. What’s your relationship with SjoW like? He is great team mate. We practise a lot together and share good times. I also believe he is one of the best Terrans in Europe.
6. What’s a typical day for Select? NOTHING SPECIAL except practising sc2 all day
7. If you could change three things about Battle.net 2.0, what would they be? I would make a chat channel, /f m function, and upgrade the replay system so we can see replays with other players, like sc1.
8. What made you become a progamer? I was just playing war3 ladder at the beginning for fun. However, I got an offer from some website for an interview and it affected my heart and made me want to go pro.
9. Are there any players who you love to beat in tournaments? No. There is no specific player that I want to beat but I want to beat everyone like I did in the past.
10. Are you thinking of competing in the GSL? I am planning to participate GSL season 3. My schedule is too tight to play GSL season 2 at the moment.
11. What is your ideal woman? Hahaha hardest question ^^. I can't really explain this question with words However, normally I like pretty girls like everyone does lol
12. If you didn't become a progamer, where do you think you would be right now? I would be in college doing lab work, homework etc :D:D or.. I would be in US army
13. What are your goals for the rest of the year and for 2011? Absolutely, to win the GSL season three or at least do well in there
14. Are there any up and coming players that you think have the potential to become really successful, like yourself? uhh,, I never thought about this .. and I don't know
15. Who do you want to choose for the next 20 Question 20 Answers interview? And what do you want to ask them? I want SjoW to have an interview - and uh, my question is: when are you joining me in Korea!!
16. What’s the most common mistake you see weaker players making? Hm... I think it is their game management and knowing how they should play i.e. what should they do in a specific situation.
17. If every player in the world competed in the GSL, what ratio of Koreans to non-Koreans would you expect in the Round of 64? In my opinion, the Korean server skill level is the highest of all servers. However, for the top players from each region, there is not a big difference between them. If I assume that, it would be 60% Koreans and 40% foreigner players if we say the same number of ppl compete ^^
18. What are your thoughts about using custom maps in tournaments? It would really affect the game flow I've played on a Iccup map on ITV and the game seemed like sc1 because the map was big, also there were no xel naga towers. If we do use custom maps in tournaments, I want them to make it like sc2 maps and not like sc 1 maps because we are playing sc2
19. Any advice for aspiring SC2 progamers out there? There is no pain no gain. Practise!
20. What’s the funniest game of SC2 that you’ve played? Someone 4 gates rushed me and I beat him with two cloack banshees ahahahah I flew my raxes into a place where he can't hit with a ground unit
Thank you SeleCT for taking the time to answer our questions! As decided by SeleCT, the next 20Q20A will be with the Swedish Terran SjoW. If you would like to ask SjoW a question, you can leave it in this thread and if you're lucky it will be picked for the interview. Until next time!

Great interview, I always wanted to know more about Select after he won both TL Opens.

Thanks for the interview. Interesting to see his point of view on custom maps, that's two majorly successful sc2 players (huk being the other) who have come out in favor of making sure that custom maps don't feel too much like sc1 maps.

Seems like a nice guy Cool feature.

Question for Sjow: Why are there so many good swedish Terran players, and do they all know each other personally/practise together.
|
those photos are really good! I think I've just become a SeleCT fan xD
|
Select in GSL3! More foreigners oh wait...
I kind of want to know why they dislike SC1-style maps.
|
my main goal was to quit the game and study in USA. I was studying well until the sc2 came out :D now.. I just have fallen in love with sc2
Another life ruined by SC2! He probably would have ended up curing cancer or aids or something until the long arm of SC2 got him
=P

SeleCT is from WC3. So he prefers micro over macro as it is more their style. Smaller maps promote less bases/less units/less macro.

good interview i wonder how he will do in GSL 3!
|
I wonder what happened to his teammates; PrinTsCreeN, NumLiNk and CapSLoCk?

can't wait to see you play in GSL3, hope you can make it

shortest 20q20a ever i guess, he "dodged" like half of the questions
|
More interviews like this ! Select was so good at DoW watch his wcg games.
|
Thanks for sharing the interview, good reading!

Nice feature. Some weird questions there but it was a nice Q&A all around.

Haha he's pretty lucky then, imagine if he'd have picked a different button and his name was brightness or degauss or something.
|
haha the last question made me laugh
|
Nice article. Could have been better if there was an introduction of his nationality/place of residence.
|
very entertaining interview, although his answers didnt have too much substance. i still like it
but he was really lucky to choose the select button. imagine some1 having the nickname "PriNT", "PasTE" or "CapsLoCK". would be very very unepic, much worse than "SeleCT"

DegausS would actually be a pretty awesome name

Awesome interview. Although he kinda dodged some questions, but whatever!

Argh, I remember being a huge fan of this back when DoW had a competitive community. He was an absolute baller on Dawn of War Sanctuary, the only DoW site worth anybody's time on the net. Many excellent memes from that site originate from Select, including one amusing one known as 'Reric Make Bug', the name of an angry thread SeleCT made. That stayed with Sanctuary for years, and just seeing this guy is making me very sentimental <3
I always wondered where he went, I'm very happy to see him back.
|
lol, love this new feature and learning about the origin of his name Thanks TLAF
|
|
Would be nice if Select can join Liquid/OGS house for GSL3 preperations :D
|
Select for Liquid/OGS! I always wanted to know who SeleCT was, since I had never heard of him before, thanks for the interview!
|
Couldn't agree more with Q7.
|
Sweet interview! I be rooting for ya at GSL 3.
|
it's nice to put a face to some of the tournament names that keep popping up.
But some of the answers to the questions were the most generic & bland answers I've ever seen. The interview itself was quite boring.
|
Good interview, although my monitor doesn't have a "Select" button. I'm jealous.
|
Awesome interview indeed. SeleCT is a handsome nerd, too.
|
Cool feature. Can't wait for future installments.
|
awesome article! i love learning about the pro gamers and just their general attitudes! i didn't even know SeleCT was asian!

Me neither. Lol, I just assumed everyone who in the DoW community was Euro.

Cool interview and hope to see more of him in big future events.

SelecT is a very nice guy. Talked to him for a bit at Raleigh. English is a tad poor, but a great fellow =)
|
I like the questions. Also, lol at #20
|
So is he actually a Korean, or where does he come from?
|
very korean interview :p seems like a nice guy though
Also good idea to introduce this q&a to TL, me likey
|
select is awesome
probably my favorite terran player to watch
|
I wonder if he listens to kpop while he plays.

Yeah I was thinking that. But it could of also been that he had never thought of that before, maybe cause hes really busy?

LOL

Been watching a lot of SjoW replays on advice from a friend, so questions for him as I don't recall ever seeing a pro who *never* scouts or scans his opponent's base in games as much as he does.
SjoW what do you think it is about your style that allows you to get away with this? Do you have a build for each match-up that is designed around not having to scout? Is this a conscious choice because of early economy or compensating for a (relatively) low APM? (around 90 average in the 20+ replays I have watched so far. Not hating, big fan and I want to understand how you do it!)
|
Select is honestly my favorite player right now. I love rooting for former champions from other games like TLO, Apollo and of course Select. Select fighting!!!!!

Nah there were a number of Americans in the DoW competitive community. And Select was the lone Asia-born Asian. DanSkillZ was half-Chinese and from the UK, but he was also like 13 years old lol.
|
Is this the same select that was the top of the ladder in mlg Raleigh?

So if Select goes to GSL3, would he be considered a Foreigner?

Sweet interview. I never knew that SeleCT was so gosu at Dawn of War.
(Tweeted.)

Nice to be able to put a face behind that name. I almost want to consider him as a foreigner when he goes GSL3, we need more foreigners there

He was really good. Mained Eldar all through the ladder, then when it came to WCG, I think just for the finals match, he switched to Chaos. I could be wrong on the exact details of it, but that's how I remember it. Pretty fking boss to change race during the finals of WCG. His reason for doing so was "Chaos is stronger," or something like that. Was just hilarious at the time.
|
Hope you do well in korea SeleCT!
|
I remember when everyone was like "Who is this SeleCT guy?". He seems like a really great addition to the community.
Nice write-up and good luck Select!

My sarcasm radar isn't quite sure what to make of the wierdo response so I'll just say I thought he gave a great answer.
I also don't remember Select from WC3.

As a zerg player... I DESPISE all terran's doing well in any tournaments. Only terrans i root for are TLO and Select. They are both very entertaining. TLO has creativity. Usually does something different most games. Select has guts and pulls wins out of nowhere sometimes. Insane how well he uses Marauders to do every role.
I was really hoping Select would play in GSL2. a bummer. He's such a amazing player and very underrated by many TL users.

Question: do we get to claim him as an American?
|
I know I'm exposing my ignorance, but what is the '/f m function' that SeleCT talks about?
|
On October 10 2010 19:24 The Touch wrote: I know I'm exposing my ignorance, but what is the '/f m function' that SeleCT talks about?
In wc3 you can "/f m TEXT" and that will send that text msg to all your friends currently online.
Its much easier to say /f m goodnight then messaging everyone individually.

not everyone can be in love with " gee gee gee gee baby baby baby... gee gee gee gee...." etc...

Cool interview!
I remember Sk.SeleCT from WC3. He was a very strong Night Elf player. I vaguely remember him winning some sunday tournaments, and being nearly unstoppable for a month or two before dissappearing out of the scene entirely (I guess that's when he switched to DoW).
