As you have surely seen by now (right?) we are running a bunch of SC2 Beta Key contests! Not least amongst those a cake contest, in the spirit of Uncontrollable's before us (all SC themed entries from said contest are eligible to enter this contest btw).
Now, having everyone's awesome cakes waste away in the inbox of the contest account is no fun, so share your creations!
As cakes are posted I (and other staff) will be updating the thread with pictures.
Happy baking =]
It will probably take a while before the first cakes start rolling in, but might as well have this posted.
Update: Pape has made a video compilation of all the cakes:

Background story: I was just as excited as the next savior fan when he made his 2009 declaration, so when the cake contest got announced, I knew that that was the cake I had to make :D I decided to make the backdrop of the cake the map Hitchhiker ( http://www.teamliquid.net/tlpd/images/maps/122_Hitchhiker.jpg ), because that was the map where savior won game 4 of the OSL against NaDa, one of his most famous victories. savior himself is standing in the top-left corner, the same location that he spawned in that game, and the source picture I used for the bonjwa pose was http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/monsuey/saviorwall5copy.jpg. His two most famous units, control- and awesomeness- wise, are his mutalisks and defilers, so I put them on the cake too, using source pictures from http://www.gosugamers.net/starcraft/images/features/mutalisk.jpg and https://cghub.com/files/Image/18381/image.jpg respectively. His name and declaration are also written across the base of the cake. Also, the cake itself is a chocolate torte.
It turned out a bit more "chibi" than I intended but enjoy!
Buttercream icing, using one of the most unhealthy and disgusting recipes I've ever found, but one that producers shinier icing than most (I wanted it for the minerals). I uh... made way too much. http://i583.photobucket.com/albums/ss280/Aranoi/SCCake/06.jpg

For reference, the cake was dark chocolate cake, and the blue fondant and brown creep were marshmallow. The brown fondant on the CC and the Infested Terran is actual fondant made with cocoa powder, chocolate, and lots of powdered sugar.

Especially since this is my very time decorating a cake, so a lot of things didn't go at all according to plan. However, I promised that I would at least enter and try, so here is my attempt at a Starcraft cake. To make it look more like a base, I put minerals, probes and even a vulture harassing the workers next to the nexus.
Finished, with minerals, probes (the tiny yellow three-pronged shapes with blue dots in between the nexus and minerals) and even a vulture harassing (the dark-blue shape with the white stripe just above the probes) on the left.
This is my attempt at a hatchery... I figured frosting would give the cake a more organic feel. Everything is eatable. Even the purple tubes which I made using almond paste and food coloring. I hope you like it.

-food coloring -cake base, covered with chocolate -2nd cake base for buildings -marmelade to 'glue' buildings (they taste and look best imho ) -frosting for the gras -icing for the pylon and minerals (both self made) -marcipan for all the units -tin foil for the power generator -fishing line to attach air units to grill
Have you guessed it? Let me give you another hint, these are the players:
I baked my own Choux Pastry and filled them with fresh whipped cream to make something similar to huge Profiteroles/Cream Buns. The legs were made using chocolate fingers coated in marzipan to give it extra detail and texture. The buns were wrapped individually with marzipan before I covered them all with green icing sugar. Then once it had set, I did the black detail with a piping bag. Finally, I sculpted the marzipan horns and teeth. The work was done by myself and my girlfriend! Hope you guys enjoy it!

Took me a little over 3 evenings to complete (total 14-18 hours I think). EVERYTHING is edible aside from the toothpicks to make the probes 'float' (and teh candles lol). Also hard to see in the images is the minirals and gas being returned by some of the probes...check it outttttt.

This is my entry, a Zerg Mutalisk cake. It's made of gateau filled with hazelnut pudding, covered with marzipan and with the addition of some cherry. It's eyes are made of gum bears. The wings are connected to the body with thin wooden rods. I started making it with big ambitions, but I realized that making of a cake can be quite time consuming. I've planned more detailed body, much more detailed wings, and primarily a bit darker, and more accurate color, but tiredness and the food paint's failure to properly color the marzipan led me to this solution:

We were sure we'd at least take top 3 with our Vulture cake, until some other cakes started rolling in. We began work on a second one that was a baneling. Much like Pape, we thought of using Jello, but we couldn't find a way to make all the detailed and crazy little blobs that would stay. We found a recipe to use Jello mix to make solid gummy, which ended up working VERY well, but the base of the baneling was frosting/fondant (gummy apparently like melts icing) which ended up being a horrible failure for any sort of three dimensional model. We ended up scrapping it and brainstorming something else.
At that point, Vince came out with his cake and he mentioned that he used marzipan. My wife was very intrigued by this, and we bought some so she could test it out. She's an art major, and is used to modeling clay, so we were pleasantly surprised when it held shapes very well. She's done some amazing things in clay, so I went looking for the most detailed SC/SC2 picture I could find. We didn't want to make it solid marzipan, so we have the main centerpiece as the marzipan model, but we still added a ton of detail with the actual cake itself so it didn't feel cheap.
So, I present my lovely wife's second (and last) entry into the competition, the Terran Marine Cake: http://notvedic.googlepages.com/cake2 - You want a piece of me, boy?
Don't ask how much we spent on this - we ended up having to get way more than is even in the prep picture. =P

After lurking in the forums for the better part of this year, the SC2 Beta contest literally forced me to register to give it a shot!
So since I am not the greatest baker in the world and we have seen many many really great pies in this contest, I (we that is,a friend and me) decided to make a PASTA-MARINE!!
Yes thats right, we made a SpaceMarine consisting 100% out of pasta! We didnt use any glue or the like (although we first considered it, as you might see from some materials, but in the end didnt need to!!), but relied solely on the stickability of wet pasta (the starch that is). To get the noodles in the right form, we had to bend them into the position we want without breaking or making them too wet, which would just cause them to fall apart. We then used some food colouring for the finishing touch!
I see that there is some intense competition, hopefully these can compete with the awesome cakes that you guys have already submitted!
On June 15 2009 15:57 Kalectotite wrote: A couple of people have mentioned that the cakes I submitted don't seem like cakes, so here are a couple more pictures- unfortunately we did not take any making-of pictures, but we figured that the next best thing would be pictures with slices taken out.
The cake itself is a chocolate cake. Trust me, it’s delicious. By now, all the leftovers are gone. Baking makes hungry. ^^ Kerrigan consists of marshmallow fondant. The green and the purple colour is usual food colouring. For the brown parts we had to use a special mixture of red and green food colouring, cocoa powder and powdered sugar. For the two upstanding blades we had to use spaghettis to hold them up.
And now I’m off to look around in the forums, since I hope to spend some more time here. Getting a beta key from a site after all commits one to contribute footage and content.

it is really not fair if the previous cakes are included. That's choosing the competition such that the winners are already decided (almost). you cannot chose a competition where people already have a huge head start and expect it to be fair. That is like choosing the competition to be "LT staff lookalikes" and all the TL staff are allowed to enter.

I don't think any of the cakes for that contest took 2 weeks to make.. So maybe it's slightly unfair but not very.
We didn't want to host a cake contest RIGHT after the last one and then have to say "lol you can't enter, come up with something new!!" (especially as we initially had plans to start this *weeks* ago).

I agree.
Allowing previously made cakes would only help the new competitors since they already have certain standards imposed.

It might not be fair if the previous cakes were from years ago or something, but given that the bake-off apparently happened right before... there's nothing really analogous to the staff situation.
1) The winners aren't already decided; there's probably going to be a lot more people submitting cakes, especially since the Bake Off didn't have a giant "WANT STARCRAFT 2!?" plastered across the front page, and a bunch of the entries there weren't Starcraft related anyways.
2) It's not actually a huge head start. For one, they didn't intend to be like "hey, I'll submit this in 4 weeks for the SC2 competition!" when they made it, since they didn't know about it. Also, they're DONE the cakes. That is to say, in the end, those cakes were made in the same amount of time as the ones for this competition. If Person A spends 8 hours making a cake today, and person B spends 8 hours on June 12 making a cake, neither of them really had a "head start". The only difference between a shorter and longer time period for the contest is either more time for brainstorming (which doesn't affect things AS much), or more time to potentially bake another cake. Each individual cake submission isn't necessarily affected by the length of the contest or who started when.
3) Even if you disregard all of that, it's still a huge advantage for us because we get to see what the previous standards are. Like, we know what we're up against when we make our cake. That's such an unbelievable benefit that I want to kiss someone on the TL staff but I won't.

in that they would both be competitions created where some entrants would not require any more effort to have a shot at winning.
By the time I remembered to start taking pictures, I had already mixed together the dry ingredients of the torte.
This is what cake looks like before you harness the power of an electric beater.
This is what cake looks like AFTER a beater :D
Cake, poured into a springform pan, plus a sign picture for verification stuff
Buttercream icing, using one of the most unhealthy and disgusting recipes I've ever found, but one that producers shinier icing than most (I wanted it for the minerals). I uh... made way too much.
Cake, after it's been done baking (+ sign if people don't believe it's me)
Brown fondant being rolled
The background terrain of the map is put onto the cake
The process of making Hitchhiker has started...
The finished map of Hitchhiker (before I started crushing/obscuring it with savior+mutalisk+defiler, heh)
The prototype of the defiler. Missing some spikes and teeth at this point.
Prototype of the mutalisk, before I put it in the freezer for a bit for it to retain its form a bit.
savior, headless, but naked (for the ladies?)
Finished cake, front view
Finished cake, phrase part 1
Finished cake, phrase part 2
Disclaimer: Every single part of that cake is edible.
Everything almost baked! icing took forever Cybernetics Core finally done! had to bake brownies later to make the spikes, also had help from bro and friend.

LOL!
I guess one could consider sAviOr the second coming of Jesus :3 She's pretty sharp ;D

lol those cookies are really cute : ) Good job About the reaver, omg I had only seen the "finished" product in the last contest. So I thought it was only best looking cake. But, after seeing the making of it, and a cut slice... it looks soooo friggin good :s Is that raspberry you put inside? Damn chocolate and raspberry are the two best things you can put in a cake!

Awesome cakes guys. I was considering going all out on this one for a desperate attempt at a beta key (however one was dropped into my lap unexpectedly). Just wanted to say that I wish luck to everyone and that I look forward to seeing some more awesome cakes.
damn awesome cakes, im gonna have to bake another one! everyone's is pretty awesome they are harder to create than they look and a lot of time /effort goes into them, good job!
Hi guys! New forum member here. I'm planning to make a cake tonight! I can't wait. Everybody's done such a wonderful job! I'll hardly be able to compete!
This is my attempt at a hatchery... I figured frosting would give the cake a more organic feel. Everything is eatable. Even the purple tubes which I made using almond paste and food coloring. I hope you like it.
tomorrow me and 4 friends(and their girlfriends of course) will create the cake fest!! an incredible and intense sunday's cooking-celebration day... soon all of you guys will see our joy and happiness transformed in a huge starcraft"ish" cake XD
I think I got in way over my head trying to make a Nexus cake.
Here's the UChicago Starcraft club's entry, an infested command center. Steelc0w, Starps, and myself worked together tonight over about 5 hours to whip this up. Hope you like it, sorry if it's too long!
And a group photo of the infested zergbakers. From left to right: me, Starps, and Steelc0w: + Show Spoiler +
We all felt awesome when the cake was done, especially Steelc0w: + Show Spoiler +
For reference, the cake was dark chocolate cake, and the blue fondant and brown creep were marshmallow. The brown fondant on the CC and the Infested Terran is actual fondant made with cocoa powder, chocolate, and lots of powdered sugar.
Ok, now that a nexus cake has been entered... Just wanna let people know I've been working on a nexus/probe/vespene/mineral cake of my own all day (230am here now)...Might not be done for a couple more days...just dont want people thinking i stole the idea ...
vultures/Liar/tank are what I think so far are the best... but I like a lot of them so far!!!
Alright you guys and gals are rocking the booty.Ive definitely got to come up with something outside the box.Hummm got one hopefully I'll be able to pull it off.
This is my Zerg base. I made my buildings and caracters according to them looks in the Starcraft2. Its foundation is a gateau, everything else is made of marzipan colored with spetial paint for dishes, except the minerals, which are made of white mint flavoured candies, also colored with that paint. (Becous i haven't found blue candies.) In this way everything made to be eatable on my cake. It took me nearly 2 days to make it, but it was worth the time :D

Hey guys! I decided to build a Colossus, which resulted too be much more difficult than I thought it would be. In the end I was also sabotaged by my dog, who really seemed to like the marzipan... Anyway, I don't want to start it over again, so I post the picture which was in the farest progress already. Still missing the details though.
I'm going to give a little description of how I made it so you can appreciate the actual baking i did too on top of the marzipan details.

It is a cake, just with decoration.
The air units required a bit of thinking outside the box, and I had to do it with what I had. I basically just use everything you would normally use for a cake, plus tin foil because I did not have any other silver and the stuff to make the air units fly. Be creative :D

So I am thinking of giving up.I really dont think I could compete with the level that everyone is throwing out.I may try......But......
I was going to do a ice carving but Chef wont let me do it without buying the block of ice and right now after the family hawaii trip I have no funds for that if I am to go to blizzcon so,Ill add my bunker cake and try to come up with SOMETHING soon.
lol i just thought of something... everyone I know that has a TL ID already has a beta key (blizzcon)... who am I gunna put for my 2nd key? :S (assuming i get one)
What are the "old steps" mentioned in the beta contest post? It says to post ur cake in [this] thread and then 'follow the old steps' ... Does that mean just the PM?
Vincze01 has raised the bar... and that sure is a tough feat considering the awesome reaverness that'd been displayed. The BC is great too though, as are the ZvT battle scenes (lurker spines are a great idea).

Yes. The "new step" is just posting it in this thread, I didn't have that included initially, but I realized how much easier it would be to show off the cakes if EVERYONE posted it here and not just those who felt like it.

Not particularly (and I'm saying this as a competitor ). They each have their separate pros and cons. Marzipan lets you do intricate (but firm) work like Vince's amazing zerg base, almond paste is best for certain textures (see Reaver cake), and fondant can have a unique gloss to it (see the Battlecruiser cake). It's not really unfair; it just depends on what works best for your cake idea. Like mine would have turned out a lot better if I had just used fondant for the basic earth terrain, and then marzipan for everything else. The zerg hive structure seems particularly suited for marzipan, and the battlecruiser's shininess seems to fit quite well with fondant.
Every day I look at this thread and i'm like wtf..Then the next day its like WTF!! I really hope you guys can give away some more keys for this contest because some of these cakes are just bonkers lmao.
my brother and i are working on a cake too, and as i see the cakes here i think we're going to have a pretty hard time to get even close to the level of awesomnes presented here.
but most of all i love the idea, that, while we are making our cake, there are several other people as crazy as we baking a starcraft cake all around the world... simply amazing
Well here is my Nexus/Probe/Mineral/Gas cake... Some sadness however... ... the coloured flames didn't come out well. For the Gas geyser and glowing crystal on top of the nexus i had green and blue (respectfully) candles (the wax is made specially so that the flame itself is blue or green) to have a flame be the glow of the crystal and the puff of the gas. But sadly the flame in the pictures looks crappy but IRL it looks sick. Oh well.
Took me a little over 3 evenings to complete (total 14-18 hours I think). EVERYTHING is edible aside from the toothpicks to make the probes 'float' (and teh candles lol). Also hard to see in the images is the minirals and gas being returned by some of the probes...check it outttttt.
I had a blast making it, and I wish everyone in the contest luck... even if I dont win a key this has still been a fun 3 days, and these cakes rock!!!
good lord, so many amazing cakes. I'm gonna feel really bad for the people who don't get keys from this contest. Good job to everyone though!!!
The only solution I can think of is to only hand out one pair of keys for the guides and the rest to this lol. And instead of giving out 2 per winner, perhaps maybe one will do and they can just play against each other, while the rest can get dibs on something in the future??
This is gonna be such a tough contest to judge, no envy at all for the staff haha.
wow soo many amazing cakes..really really nice job..looks like we have future world class bakers on tl..maybe the winners should have their pics sent to Blizzard and be the official baker there lol? imagine a huge ultralisk cake at the blizzcon entrance..
Yeah, 1 key/6 winners might be better, but I don't know if it's fair to change it at this point - although if the majority of people in this contest don't mind then it's certainly possible.

Well, this would certainly lighten the burden on judges. 6 places with how much work is getting done seems fair.

I think we should do 2 keys for Vincze01 and then 1 for the rest. If we change it from 2 each to 1 each now the only one who really gets screwed from it is Vincze01 so this seems the most fair and would make everyone happy.

Maybe we are speaking too soon, I mean there is still about a week of this to go and I know some people have been making there cakes for a few days now so good things could still be here to come!
I am for the 1 key and 6 winners though, it takes too much time to make these things and it would be a shame if somebody gets 2 keys and gives it to somebody that doesn't even follow sc2 or didn't do jack to earn it!
Prizes: The top 3 entries (to be determined by the TL staff) will each receive two (2) beta keys for the upcoming SC2 beta! Afterall, playing with a friend is way more fun than playing alone.

Why would he be the only one to get screwed? Everyone has done hard work, and you're talking like he's already won when there are still days left until the end.

I dunno if you have actually looked at his cake but there's a tiny chance someone comes up with a cake that looks better than his. Or even comes close for that matter. He probably would finish top 3 no matter what and thus would have had 2 keys unless we change the reward system. I mean, just look at the reactions in this topic.

I think as long as he is ok with it we all should be.If however he feels that he deserves the 2 than by all means I get Naz's point and it is doubtful he wouldn't make top 3 at this time. Some serious skills would have to be shown in order for him to loss top spot let alone 2nd or 3rd.

Well yes, but how is he specifically the one that really gets screwed? All of the people in the top 3 were going to get 2, so they're all displaced equally by a choice like this.
Actually, I worked hard for two days, so I could play with my friends if I win a beta key (although of course there is no guarantee that I will win, as there is almost a weeks left, and many masterpieces can be created in that time). My other reason was, that it seems like stracraft2.hu in Hungary probably won't get keys, so I made an offer to the editors of the homepage that if I win, they can use the keys, and thus they could supply the Hungarian fans with all kinds of replays and share experiences with them about the game.I know that everyone has been working really hard, but I think that this is a competition and not everyone would win a prize anyways... But of course, this is not my decision to make, so if you feel that it is best that way, then 6 peolpe should get 1 key each.

This is my submission for this contest. It is a Baneling sitting on top of a creep, which itself sits on a crepe cake . The crepe cake is made of crepes with sugar soaked oatmeal cookies and vanilla cream between the layers. The ling body and the cake cover is made of self made marzipan with food coloring. Some colors aren't exactly great because it was hard to make the right color and impossible to get a dark brown so my ling is grayish! To top it off I have a EXPLODING :D green jello on the baneling which will explode on human contact. In the end I am exhausted after 3 days of hard work and preparations and I hope you all like the piece.
I wish mine was different... would be a lot easier now that I think about it to bake the cake, cover it in fondent/marzipan and then do the whole design in marzipan/fondent/pther candy, instead of carving it out of the cake .... Still though, nice baneling damn!... Even if its 1 key/6 winners I'm not lookin too good... gaaaaah

Oh this makes us sound so exotic, there are some of "us" around here, even if Vincze does not realize this;)
Btw, good job with that baneling Pape, the jello is so vivid, gotta love it, makes it all like three times better
So can we please change the rules to have all contestants send their cake directly to my house for a taste test? I promise to be honest in my analysis and will not be biased towards the hatchery and reaver cakes (terran = laaaame!)

i didn't say that there are no hungarians around. i only told: " it seems like stracraft2.hu in Hungary probably won't get keys "
I wasnt really quoting you, but rather Archerofaiur, I just felt like that in his - reasonable - enthusiasm for your cake (and in turn, your plea) he started to believe that the only way for us hungarians to get any info about the betas was starcraft2.hu's coverage (which site I've never heard about before, btw^^)

Of course we can get replays and other stuff from other sites, but it way more better if we can test the game ourselves, and can create descreptions from our own experiences. Even your English is good, there are so many friends of mine, who'd like to read descriptions in there own language. Btw there will be to tragedy, if we won't get key(s), but it would be a favour from me to them, and would make hungarian sc2 staff's life easier.
Being a lawyer, i must say that changing the rules of the contest after it already started is unacceptable. I know there are some other lawyers here, and they know what i say.
Even if the changes are considered "good", this is not fair, is similar to what dictators do.
I understood the reasons, but justifying it on the number of good submissions is even more wrong. Even if the majority accept it, the rules should not change, as even the democracy has its limits (it should respect the minority and the current rules).
Perhaps im being too serious, but this is something that must be taken serious imo.
You're completely right. This is a change so massive it will affect MILLIONS of lives - how can TL staff do this in cold blood? Being a lawyer myself too, I propose death penalty under US Law(it is under US law right?).

i just know ppl like you would say that
This contest is not a random person doing something useless, It is is being watched by ppl outside TL also and a rule change like that reduces credibility.
I take TL serious, and i think some ppl take this contest serious also. Its not just because its about a game that the rules can be screwed
As for the issue with the keys, as somebody who has made a cake and is competing in this thing I am for 1 key per person and 6 winners. I just want A cd key so I can play the beta which is why I made the cake and put so much time/effort into my cake, and so did others. Not winning a key and than not being chosen for the opt in would eat me alive, especially knowing that random people with no love at all for starcraft could be chosen for the opt in over us who still support SC BW 11 years later. Having said that if I happen to place in top 3 and rules stay the same I am willing to give my key to another competitor if thats what it takes.
I also don't see how that will ruin the credibility of TL if it is what the majory of the contestants want to do.

=((( 6/1 sounded way better, theres a ton of great cakes (and still more to come!)
Naturally, a 6x1 rule benefits those who are not favored to win [the majority of competitors], ergo, if put to a democratic vote, it is likely that most competitors would elect for rule change.
However, the consequent disenfranchisement of those who would originally receive 2 beta keys not only hurts them, but harms TL's reputation for fair dealing. It is therefore best to keep the rules as we have them.
All competitors entered under the 2/2/2 rules, and thus agreed to those terms. We are saddened that we only have these few keys to give out, with so many worthy entries, but I believe we have decided upon the best course of action here.
As has been suggested, we are showing Blizzard PR the amazing work put forth by the TL community in this contest and others, requesting for additional prizes. While obviously there are no guarantees in this dept., we will do our best to keep you posted.

I guess we posted at the same time so I didn't see this when I made my last entry in the thread. You guys do what you feel is right and best, and I guess we hope our Blizzard people recognize and give everybody on TL a beta key!

That is extremely nice of you, especially given how good your cake is.
After much consideration and hard work, I present to you my Protoss Zealot cake! It is made entirely of cake, butter cream icing, and fondant. I also used black licorice for the nerve tendrils that come out of the sides and back of a Templar's head. It took me about 15 hours spread over three days to make, and I think the end result was worth it. So without further ado, here it is!
omg the muta cake is so good, I love the glave shot at the bottom too. ><
We need to get 50 extra keys from blizzard for these cake people.
About the rule changes, the contest is being held under TL law, not US law. So, we can change it if we wish. Seriously.
But it wouldn't be fair to change it now. The only reason this came up was that we were overwhelmed by the number and quality of the cakes produced. People have seriously gone above and beyond. It seems cruel for someone to spend 3 days making a cake and then not get a key. Of course, they have lots of cake to console themselves...

dont take me bad, i know you can change it if you want you decided to keep the rules for the same reason i pointed, rules change after the the contest start is not fair
What if TL let people designate their second key to [next best cake that doesn't win one]. I think its probably the best method. I would gladly do that and have more TL bakers get keys. As far as being worried that more people wouldn't do this, I believe this community is a great one, and is why I joined recently in mid-late May, and that I'm sure the majority of the rest of you agree with me and would do what you can to help out the community.
So what do you all think about an option to let contestants designate their second key to other bakers?
Imo, gaming sites should get more keys if they have more members. Of course small starcraft sites should get a minimum number of keys, so no site gets like just one. Otherwise you have to get beta keys from small sites since the competition is so fierce here.
I think Chill and Kenni said it best in the recent podcast... The fact that TL gets the same number of keys and some random lame 5 hits-a-day fansite...Its rediculous to say the least.
But in Blizzards defence... How would they decide how much each site would get? There would always be arguments over the size of a community, and the number of hits it gets, as well as accuzations of favoritism among Blizz for specific sites. While TL does probably deserve a lot more than it gets... How much more is fair?
Ok so I don't feel this is the best I could have done. But I feel it looks ok.I let time slip and honestly I can't spend anymore time on cakes for a few months.hahah
I love everyones cakes. The real top ones have been pointed out.
So It took forever to find fondant I didn't want to fiddle around with making it.I wanted something based off this picture with a reaver hitting the mineral line.
Heres how it turned out.I can assure you thats fondant and not playdough(playdough on the table) my son was making his own "cakes" with me.
Ok i haven't checked this page in a few days but all of a sudden there's so many amazing cakes some are ridiculously good!!! I believe this will be a hard contest to judge for whoever has to choose.
ya, the more I look at these cakes, i think the contest should be called:
"bake a cake/pastry, put icing on it, then make a sick model of something SC out of marzipan/fondent" contest!
at least thats what some of them are... For some of these cakes its become a marzipan/fondent molding competition... Not complaining at all, it's just not what I expected. Still sick cakes tho.
I so wish we could just give everyone a key, so much effort has gone into this stuff. More than anticipated, I think.

Perhaps naming it a cake contest is misleading, I tried to convey (in the rules section) that you could basically bake/make whatever, as long as it's edible. IE if you wanted to make a main-course type of meal with a SC theme that would have been fine as well.

Patience, patience... still a few days left.
I don't see anything different from your cake either b00ts...Stop putting people down on how they are making their cakes.....Rules didn't stipulate how they should be made and besides all the cakes are really damn awesome especially Vinc's and Pape's....I see the models as an extension of the cake while some people didn't incorporate the cake into the model that is fine...They put a lot of time and effort into making the best cake they can and they should get the props for it.
I think Pape did it nicely with the creep as the top and then his Jello Bane ling on top ...same is said for Vinc's cake with the hatch + creep + drones mining :D....
Whoa.. When did I put someone down?.. Right after I made the comment I said that "they are still sick cakes tho"... And the difference with mine is its carved out of the cake..not molded on top of it... However that is not to say the latter is less difficult, on the contrary, marzipan (and especially certain types of fondent) can be quite frustrating to get teh right shape, and in some ways shows more 'ability'. In no way was I trying to take away anything from those cakes. Like a lot of people have been sayin, this isnt what I expected, ie. the amazing quality.
I'm just bored and reading the boards and posting... My intention was not to put anyone down. My apologies if it came across that way. I love all the cakes.
What I find the biggest tragedy of all is that the same number of keys for the baking contest will be allotted for the guide contest. With the baking contest, people invested a lot of time, money, and creativity into it. I find with the guides, a lot of them are half assed and have a lot of copied and pasted stuff in them.
Sorry to all the people who wrote well thought out guides, though. A lot of them probably took a lot of effort, but I find that for the most part, the top ~80% cakes could probably compete with the top guides
I hope I don't sound like too much of an ass My heart just kind of sunk for that kid and his mom who made their cake...
Edit: Okay I feel bad now, I just want to apologize to the people who made guides, it's just that some of the ones in the general forums seemed kinda sloppy to me.
Damn those other shitty sc sites and their equal number of cd keys!

Lol, just FYI there's a third person involved in that cake. You can see his hand in one of the pics. He was clearly the guy who reads TL and decided to make a cake.
Not to discredit their work or anything. I'm just saying it's not as magical as a 10 year old kid asking his mom to help him bake a cake for an SC contest.

I don't know the exact numbers, but saying "every site is getting the same" is actually NOT true. The bigger/older sites ARE getting more.
I dunno how much I should say, I just feel that while there are situations where I'd agree with you, I don't think blizzard deserves flak in this particular case~
Look at that Hydralisk triumphantly stand over its prey, the poor Crypt Fiend. So satisfying.
The making...
So, we started out with a cake base, iced to look like part creep and part blight. + Show Spoiler +
Notice how there's more creep than blight XD
Then, we made the Crpyt Fiends abdomen out of cake... + Show Spoiler +
Afterwards we covered the cake in fondant, and proceded to do the same for the Hydralisk. We took some fondant and used the cake as filling. + Show Spoiler +
Our second cake is almost done, and I think it's shaping up to be quite impressive. We've been working on it for about 3 days now, and we're finishing up the last segment with final details and doodads. I really hope we finish tonight, as it's been killing me to not release pictures early. =P

what's the blue armor made of?
It's fondant with food coloring. We used some spray-on food coloring that we found at Hobby Lobby to try to get a gloss, but it didn't work so well. It did, however, make for a good base for painting food coloring on for shading.

OH MY GOD
Are you serious?!
This cake is a work of art man. I kinda have to question how edible that is though. I don't know much about cakes, so I'm just wondering what it would taste like? Would it be like biting into a chunk of icing or what?

It's regular cake with a layer of frosting and then a layer of fondant (basically just marshmallow). The frosting/fondant isn't very thick, and my wife says that it tastes very good. :>
Vedic incredible job you and your wife did. I feel like somebody will really have a broken heart after this competition so sad we can't get 6 keys out because its shaping out like that.
Damn I didn't think I could do something that would get me top 3 I did hope I may be able to eek out a win but after the marine face and the hatchery. No way am I wining anything.T_T Damn these art majors and newbies to the forum.I hate you all.Just kidding welcome to tl.net and you all better be a part of the community after you win.If not well Ill be sad.

After the exposure this competition has on digg/reddit, maybe Blizzard will take notice. I even submitted a tip to Kotaku. My wife says thanks. :>
I love the marine with the lit up "cigar", I suggest that picture to be included in the OP This contest never ceases to amaze me, I most certainly hope the Blizzard PR staff at least doubles the number of prizes.
This is my second attempt too. It was made with sponge cake, marzipan, icing sugar and even a little bit of pocky on the wings! It took me and my girlfriend 2 days to finish. Hope you guys like it, and props to all other guys that made two cakes! it certainly is hard work.
Get your bake (cake?) on with the TL Starcraft 2 Beta Key Bake Off!
When? Update: Changed ending date slightly to allow North American users to use their weekend fully. In order to allow North American users to use the most of their weekend possible, we'll end it at June 15th 18:00 KST (June 15th, 11:00 CET // June 15th, 5:00 EST // June 15th, 2:00 PST).
So deadline is 2pm PST Monday June 15th ? or 2am ?
I have a feeling today and tommorow will bring some awsome competition and cakes to this contest. We already have 5-6 amazing cakes each that took a few days to make. Personally I don't know how I'm gonna take it if I don't get a key after this and some world of warcraft newb gets it. The wait is a pain I'm already going nuts inside!! when will we know the results?

with all the time zones listed, i really had no clue lol. but okay thanks, so pretty much sunday night, gottcha!
Yeah that Cattle Bruiser cake is rather quite good, but seriously, the arms (cake?) race since Unc made her Ultra cake has been fucking insane, I think just about every cake in this comp is better than that.
Most of it is marzipan but the filler is raspberry!
Haha I thought of that same idea XD
Man the level of competition is becoming so ridiculously high it's awesome. But it's sad at the same time since so many awesome cakes are not going to win =(
I was going to make one but man the competition is steep!
The Terran marine one is so sick I spit out my drink when I saw it. That is definitely going to be a winner, it's just insanely awesome. Kudos to all the contestants, and good luck judges picking winners.
This is mine and Matel's Cake... Unfortunately there will be no Reaver in SC2 anymore and since it`s our favourite unit we wanted to grant it a last tribute by choosing a Reaver-drop for the scenery. Sadly when we finished two drones, mineral patches and the reaver there was no more place for a hatchery left
the reaver was made out of a kind of cookies (a recipe from our grandparents), and covered with fondant, the cake is a biskuit cake, the drones and the cake covering are marzipan, the mineral patches are fondant and icing. the only thing not edible is the TL-flag
On June 14 2009 03:24 FrozenArbiter wrote: Lol if we let this run for another week I'm almost scared of what the results would be O_O
Very nice BC, Blapsd!
Thanks!
Next step is cake-BCs with actual guns -.-
Haha and actual guns wouldnt be the hard part, it would be making them edible too!
Also about putting the cakes to a vote, personaly i'd rather the mods/admin vote like originally stated because letting the whole site vote can possibly lead to abuse.
Even tho the judging is going to be done by the site admins or whatever, could we get a poll after all the entries are in anyways, where everyone gets 3 votes ? just for kicks
So here is my entry into the Cake/edible Starcraft object. Originally I was going to make a Siege tank being torn to pieces by a hydra made of marzipan (the clay of the baking world) I needed to use my parents oven to bake the 5 sheets of brownie I was using to construct the base of the cake but an unfortunate event would see a different fierce monster tear the siege tank apart, my parents’ dog.
I lieu of a thoroughly disgusting pile of brownies and icing being eaten by the Hydra I’ve chosen to just enter my painstakingly carved Hydralisk, on a single sheet of brownie that I had planned on using as the turret for my tank.
I’m really impressed with the caliber and quantity of cake people where willing to field, best of luck to the lot of you and I certainly hope we all paid attention to the TL forum rules and had a lot of fun.
Perhaps its immature of me but I have omitted a ton of the basic construction stuff but they all seemed to look like wang if you lot want I can post some of my under construction pictures.

Is that fondant? I never knew fondant could be sculpted like that, i thought it was softer and less brittle/crumby.
If it is, please consider this a huge compliment.
It is fondant. With alot of powdered sugar knead in. That way you can only work on it when it's heated up in the microwave. At room temperature it will harden again. Also it's quite delicious, with all the sugar. ;D

Here is my cake. Everything is edible with the exception of the one toothpick to hold up the overlord. I made a red velvet cake with white frosting. The creep, forge, cannons and probe are all made out of marzipan, the overlord is taffy and Twizzlers, and the crystals and pylon are Jolly Ranchers. Enjoy!
Here are the rest of the pics from my process: HERE
there are soooo many pro cakes.... I feel bad for anyone who doesn't get one, but the 3 that stand out in my mind that are the best are: Vincze01's Cake; Pape's cake; Vedic & Wife Marinecake.
close follow ups are: Kalectotite's cake and Geomade's cake

We didn't have issues with ours hardening, but more like not hardening - we couldn't get it to keep any minor details without returning to it's original shape. Should we just try to keep kneading in more powdered sugar, or is there more to it?

That's not really any sort of accusation. Using a barbie doll cut in half as a mold for the fondant would actually explain how it kept the shape so well.

Naz, you sure are right it took a shot at a Beta key to get me to stop lurking and to actually contribute to TL I have little to add with regards to Starcraft as I'm a c- at best but this community has really suckered me in with a baking contest. Most gaming communities would not really be so kind in regards to a Cake competition so I salute all you TL junkies for making sweet cakes and making me want to be a member of a stellar community of like minded folks.
To all you fondant savants I'll trade you a guide on sculpting for a guide on making fondant work, I tried several times on my first cake attempt with little avail.
I'm also excited to see who the winners are knowing full well that with that much effort put into making food I can only imagine how much fun you lot will have with a Beta key.

It's gonna take a while I'm afraid - we'll most likely announce these winners and the guide winners together..
.. And there's A LOT of text to read for the guides (there's seriously almost 50 of those damned things as well ).
Hopefully we can get the Ironman tournaments up and running and announce all winners together.
I am kinda glad my offer to help was not taken for this hehe
Also, holy crap at the quality of cakes here. As cooking is the industry I work in right now, and that I have worked weddings, banquets, etc... The quality of some of these entries is seriously some of the highest quality visually that I have personally seen. Just perfect works of art. Some of you guys should seriously consider taking up a job in making cakes as you can make retarded amounts of money doing so
SOOOOOO many good entries omg. You guys and gals are very talented.
I definitely want to see Vedic/wifey's Marinecake and Doomfish/GF's Kerrigan in the top three. It's chaos for the third spot in my opinion, so many of the entries are freakin' sweet! I don't envy the mods in this case!
IMHO: #1: Vedic/wife's Marinecake- Hell, it's about time! #2: Doomfish/Gf's Kerrigan - pretty much the Queen Bitch of the Universe #3; multiple-way tie between entrants Vincze01,Geomade, IbakeCake, Pape, Kalectotite, Chu Chi! Meet up and play beta together guys!
Our tribute to the iconic Lost Temple. We decided to tell you what we made with text cause theres no way to tell its Lost Temple from the picture. Hilariously good time. Tastes like classic battle.net
Hahaha Arbiter I have a feeling something really sick will be posted in these last few hours, and than our winning entry will be posted 1 minute before the deadline.
The creep-covered ground is one gigantic brownie, the hatchery is a multi-layer chocolate cake, with some licorice and fruit roll-ups for structure and texture. The minerals are rock candy cupcakes, the vespene geyser is made from some leftover cupcake stems, the drones (which, alas, got too large while baking) are sugar cookies, and the larva are gummi larva.
I know it was said that ANYONE could join,I am glad they did.But if any of you master bakers with 1 post win and get beta keys you better start posting here.It would make me feel a little better.

Out of all the beta contests ive seen on the web (correct me if i'm wrong here) this is by far the most epic. The amount of cakes entered is insane... and the time some people must have spent is crazy. I spent about 5 hours on my cake and its terrible in comparison to some other peoples. Anyway best of luck to everyone!
Hi everyone at TL!! I'm new to the thread, so it's nice to meet everyone. Anyway, my cake. In the spirit of Starcraft 2, I created a Zerg vs. Terran battle scene using only starcraft 2 units or starcraft 2 styles of original units. These units include a Nydus Worm, Infestor, Infested terran eggs, 3 lurkers (2 are partially burrowed), and 3 banelings, one which is rolling. On the terran side, we have the new powerful Planetary Fortress, a bunker, a Crucio Siege Tank, and MULES harvesting the new Yellow Minerals!!
This cake was made with 2 pounds of homemade marzipan, chocolate cake, lots of food coloring, some pineapple life savers (jolly ranchers don't come in yellow?!? :[ ) and three days of time. Hope you guys enjoy looking at it as much as i will enjoy eating it! YUM!
Process - Molded units, partially colored
Colored Zerg Units, and hella azn teapot
Entire Cake!

Close up of infestor! (Why it laid the terran eggs behind him instead of on the front line i do not know. Silly cerebrate)
A couple of people have mentioned that the cakes I submitted don't seem like cakes, so here are a couple more pictures- unfortunately we did not take any making-of pictures, but we figured that the next best thing would be pictures with slices taken out.

ok, ok.. I won't lie... I thought kalecdote's cakes were fakes... but seeing the slices now... damn... top three IMO..sooo accurate (especially the nexus)
The cake is made from scratch lemon cake, the pylons are white chocolate with food dye(and pipe cleaner for the skirt), the cannons are banana, the darker ground is shaved chocolate, and the warping in cannons are frosting.
Everytime I check this thread there are 3-4 more entries. Damn it's going to be tough, I suspect Zerg base screenshot and Marine face will be 1 or 2, and 3 is going to be very very tough to choose, probably will be very close as well. + Show Spoiler +
Wonder if TL will be like "SURPRISE EXTRA BETA KEYS", wishful thinking for the bakers
So, after helping Disarray make his cake, I wanted to make one of my own. He told me my TeamLiquid pony cake wasn't "Starcraft Themed", so I put him in a WeMade jacket.
Lyll was also worried that she'd be criticized as only having 2 posts (the other also being a contest entry) I told her that her join date should matter more than her post count. Plus I assure everyone that, altho she doesn't partake in posting, shes been a frequent visitor of this site for a long time, and a pretty dedicated fan. And other than NeverGG, is the only person I know bold enough to say that she can tell the difference between Luxury and Yarnc. (she says one has rosier cheeks, whatever.)
The figures are made out of fondant. The armor, kerrigans wings, and warp blade are made out of airheads, and the jewels on Zeratul are Dumb Dumb suckers. Kerrigan's hair is black licorice. The cake is just a plain vanilla cake. The lettering is also done in fondant, made larger than the original portrait because it was not easy to cut such small letters -_-

Alright, here is how to make our great marshmallow-fondant: about 150 g Marhmallows and 0.5 kg powdered sugar
add a tablespoonful of water to the marshmallows and then melt the marshmallows in the microwave and knead in about half of the powdered sugar using a mixer, for the rest of it use the hands
in between again and again heat them up in the microwave
it's quite sticky, but it's worth it, since the marshmallow-fondant is much better shapeable when it's warm and when it's cold it's much harder and also lasts longer than normal 'rollfondant' (dunno if it's the same in english, that's what my gf wrote).
Also, watch out, the marshmallows can get very very hot!
About that Barbie-doll thing: Nope, we didn't use a barby doll, just skill. ;P And as you can see on one of those photos we used a true to scale image of kerrigan, which helped alot with the proportions.
Also have to say I really like Kalectotite's cakes. THey may use fondant or marzipan or whatever on the outside, but it's spread on a cake base. From a culinary perspective I prefer that to a cake with a fondant figure on top, even if the pure fondant figures sitting on a cake might look a little better.

Our ingredient levels were a bit different, so it could be why ours didn't come out as well. We also did all of our sugar by hand instead of mixing it in. Thanks, we'll try it out.
Over 50 cakes and I'd say over 80% of them required more than just a few hours to make. just wow! I never seen such a dedication for any contest before. All 38 beta keys being given away to fansites should be given to this thread in my opinion.
I just want to wish all my competition great luck and I hope you all had fun making these.

The buildings and stuff are made out of gum paste, the "dirt" is crushed nilla wafers, the water and blue goo is piping gel, and then of course 2 cakes for the cliffs covered in fondent and everything is painted with icing colors used to color frosting and such.

Yeah, so many of these cakes are just gorgeous, I'd almost hate to eat them. They seem more like edible works of art, especially with the Kerrigan cake, the Marine cake by Vedic and his wife, and Vincze01's hatchery cake. With so many great entries, I think at least the top ten should definitely get little Cake icons for their hard work and time.

Not only do I think that TL has a baking team now but we better sweep the christmas baking competition that Blizzard has every year. Imagine if we all combined our techniques into a single guide in advance of the official Blizzard competition.

structurally, its not as correct or as elaborate as i wanted it to be, as the 100x100 img files suggest otherwise.
you can find images of the whole process here, with links to the higher res pictures, posted in chronological order.
Cake Specs: Basil-Lemon Cake Betty Crocker Dark Chocolate Frosting. 2 lbs of marzipan, in varied colours
the cake is fluffy and thick, with lots of lemony-ness that smacks of summer. utterly delicious. the subtle hint of basil is a curiously good surprise. (id add more next time, than the recipe requests. also id suggest adding more zest or lemon extract to heighten the lemonyness.)
lemon-almond-chocolate is a delicious combination, but after all the rolling, moulding, pressing, etc, i dont think i will be eating anything almond for quite some time.

thank you

Great cake man! But it is 12 hours after the deadline!!
Vedic, I'm sure that the pool of talent that TL has with regards to making fine pastry goodness a solid group of people could make a team and storm the ginger bread cookie contest that Blizz has during the holiday season. While the ones before only involved WoW stuff I'm sure with SC2 slated for a Q4 release that they would likely make it a blizzard shaped food contest.
The only link I've been able to find is to the 2006 baking competition check this out only one guy used marzipan, weak.

In the honourable mentions section there sits a lonely nexus.
We'll be on the lookout for it. I'm sure my wife would like to try some different techniques with fondant, and we can also try out some soft gingerbread.
Poll: Would you be mad if you didnt win anything from this contest? (Vote): Yes, i want at least 1 SC2 key to show for it. (Vote): Yes, i would want a poster or something that shows i participated. (Vote): Yes, i would want... (Vote): No, i dont care if i lost.
I'm giving my 2nd key to 4th place if I win as is, I hope the others can be as nice if they win to share with all these great people that put the time into it. I don't see how anybody in top 3 can feel that they didn't end up there without some luck out of 50 awsome cakes. At least more people can be happy like that and people here that made these cakes deserve it more than their friends who might not have done shit, thats all my opinion.

but what? This is a friendly competition for a game - no need to get mad or be mean to anybody. The cakes made should be prize enough, and anything that anyone wins should be considered a bonus.

Alot of these cakes (from their authentication pictures) were made by more than one person, so I'm guessing they would give their beta key to them instead. So don't hold your breathe is all I'm saying.
Good luck to everyone, does anyone know if TL mods are in the process of judging already? I really want to know who the top three are

I doubt that MOST of these cakes were made by more than 1 person. I know I worked on mine all alone and it came out pretty damn good. Although some people did have wives and girlfriends help them and they mentioned that, but really I doubt their significant others want a beta key. But in the end, the rules are 2 keys and whoever gets them can do what they want. I'm just trying to reward the other cakes, but I know not everybody in the world works like that.
My brother pretty much just wanted to play with fondant, that's why he's in some pictures. I was originally going to give my second key to him, but after seeing all these, I would definitely give the second one to a great one that didn't win. Of course, I'm nowhere near the top 3 so my word isn't worth much, haha!

i know but the poll i make could be taken in the wrong way so i said that
Sadly, the mods and admins of Teamliquid.net were never seen again, having been torn to pieces by a mob of Starcraft fans driven to a crazed state by the scent of Beta.
But seriously...tell us when the Beta starts. Please?
Well SCL has a contest for Beta Keys that ends July 26, and it would be pretty whack if they had a contest that ended almost a month after the Beta was released. Although this is only circumstantial.

I suppose they will give the award to the "not eatable" cakes. Is it easy to make diorama with not eating components.. i find more excellent the barracks cake or the extractor that u can really eat! we will see we will see..

Looking back the barracks cake actually is pretty leet.... and delicious looking
I never looked at this thread before and I am in complete disbelief. So many of these entires are more incredibly awesome than I would have ever expected. GL to all, it's too bad everyone can't get one.
I would have done a balloon structure and then photos of some of my dogs poo after ingesting balloons to prove that its edible but it would have been not all that funny...Or would it?
24 minutes over the promised delivery time for the results I'm so excited, the delay only points to a more heated and difficult showdown to decide a winner.
Yeah! If I am a winner I am donating my 2nd key to 4th place and I am posting hd gameplay videos and hopefully some live streams for this community. I've been reading this ite since 2003 and its only fair to give back! Hopefully the winners will do this.

Is all I'll say. I know, it sucks, but I think you'll be happy.
Waiting is okay, but can we get some sort of time-frame?
I think, because of what is happening here already, it would be best to avoid a time frame. You'll find out soon enough.
And to FA's point, trust us, it'll be worth it.
It's cool, I'd just like to be able to tell my wife that she can stop refreshing long enough to get sleep. =P
I don't think the way it works will be "Congratulations! Vedic and his wife have won! Oh wait, they are not online right now continually refreshing the page, so their victory must be withdrawn!"
Holy fucking shit. Is 90 % of TL professional confectioners? Some of those are jawdroppingly good: Kerrigan, The Marine and the Zerg base really stands out.
Hmmm... we have to wait a few extra days to hear results from cake contest.... Beta is said to start in summer.... Summer starts on the 21st...Blizzard is having a press release or conference on the 22nd.... HHMMMMMMMMMMM
Very much! I am happy that we have so many people that will come out happy with this contest. I want to congratulate everybody for this contest, a epic thread, and an epic effort. I will share my experience with those that wont be able to participate as soon as the 2nd wave comes out.
Do we know though when the 2nd wave comes out? is that before the beta releases or with the 2nd wave of beta invites after the beta is released?
Honestly I don't know, they said we could use "2nd wave keys".. Unfortunately my MSN is retarded and only saves 50% of conversations so I cannot check his exact wording.
I believe it will be after the beta has started but I cannot tell you for sure.. It's a week-end too, so no chance of contacting Karune.
That's some pro baking.Well done participants i liked your cakes very much happy to see that people put so much effort.By my opinion you are true fens.
ALL! we made it to the starcraft2.com website! Check it out under the community section on top of the page! + Show Spoiler +

This thread, this contest, the effort was more epic than Sc 2 will ever be. I would like to see a statistic how many of the cake makers are playing starcraft 2 nowadays. (Me not.)
