Klaz hunny... I'm afraid that last remark is exactly why some people have wigged out. For people who have invested hours and hours of time in working their way up the slush pile, that remark is pretty infuriating. It doesn't excuse their rudeness, but why if you've already invested two years in the book are you so keen on chucking the book on top of the pile and saying "hey look at this?"
That said. How you get there doesn't bother me that much, but what IS the darned fired rush?? J D Salinger, two published works in forty years, and he is acknowledged to be one of the greatest writers of the post war period. Speed doesn't make things great. You've already invested the time in your work. I have read it, and you really do have something to say, but I have to concur that it needs polishing.
There are some real heavy hitters on that website, professional critics, even some published authors, journalists, lots and lots of different wordsmiths who could help you put a real glow on your work. My advice is slow down, engage with the folk that can do you the most good, reciprocate reads, get into what the site is about and you will be all the better for it. Honestly, you will.

What are you talking about books or commentary....
If you're talking about commentary.. you're right. I reacted very defensively. I don't know half as much as a lot of you guys when it comes to the technical detail of the game. I do feel that I'm a good judge of the overall flow of things though. But ya now I just do them for my enjoyment and that of those who enjoy watching em.
And while many of the comments were spot on, and some were even constructive there were a few people that I felt weren't trying to help me improve but only tear me down, as if they hated me personally or something (before the whole controversy got going). At the same time people seemed adamant on refusing to acknowledge that I had any sort of positive effect on the community at all, which I don't think was/is true. All that kind of got my back up. And once you get entrenched into a forum argument, well they take a life of their own.
Either way, I actually listened to some of your commentaries not to long ago and actually enjoyed them quite a bit. You obviously read the game at a whole other level, but I still feel that there is value in what I do, and I have fun doing it.
Being a writer the past two years, I've had to take much tougher criticism and in hindsight all that other stuff seems so minor.

Klaz, it is not all mutual back scratching. Some people have taken a lot of time and effort to read your novel and try help you improve it, with no expectation of anything in return. You even have a critique by a professional editor, which you should pay close attention to. It is not about cliques, not for many of us there; it is about improving ours and other's work.
Plenty of people have welcomed you. Others were irritated that you played it like a game. Please don't complain because someone else plays the game too - it's not the system - he did that on his own initiative - like you.

Commentary, of course. I will never get over the slap in my face that is someone relatively new to the game telling me my experience-backed comments were meaningless and that I should respect his effort. I can't comment on everyone else, but that's where I stand.

You still hold a grudge, after all this time? Wow.

I don't hold a grudge Klaz, I honestly don't mind what you do as long you are aware of your shortcomings.

And what difference do my shortcomings, and awareness or not of them really make to you?
Honestly, I'm happy with the way I commentate, and the "level" I commentate it at. Enough people seem to enjoy it to make it worthwhile enough for me. And that's enough for me. Esp since it's only a VERY part time hobby, which will probably end when SC2 comes out.

Anyways, derailment over. This thread is about books and Authonomy and drama, not commentary.

Klaz: "the votes would be so precious and worth something"
Do your 1000 votes come into that category?
Possibly more people on authonomy have read more of your book than anybody else.
But, yes, a month is an awfully long time to spend winning a prize, I agree, especially as there really isn't a prize.

What about reading the excerpt and voting with your honest opinion (or back it up / don't back it up, whatever it's called)? Wait, that would be a reasonable thing to do. I'm sorry. TBH, I have no interest in anything klazart could say about any subject.
It is for my own humor. There are plenty of websites like EastOftheweb.com that are real writing communities, where authors put forth real work and aren't cock sucking for a ratings bump.
I do not respect the idea or concept of the community.

Ok. Nevermind everything I said.
Klazart this last page was a huge blunder.
You sound like you are drowning in your own bile. I mean seriously you changed your 'motives' for going there so many times now. You are an inconsistent persona. I'm editing my posts.
Those who quoted me please remove my words.

Floodgate - I did say the system was broken didn't I. I'm just saying, that I've identified what I feel is a major flaw. I made a more detailed post earlier about how the rankings should probably be done away with entirely. that is if one wants talent to be unearthed I guess it depends on what your goal is. If your just happy exchanging critiques with "good" writers and hanging around, then it doesn't matter. If your goal is to get on the ED and get some feedback, then yes, exchanging critiques in order to get there is very much a waste of time. even if it is only a month
Another way to get an agent or editor to look at your work is to enter those writing contests judged by an agent or editor with a book that finals. In those contests, the agent/editor rank orders the finalists. To do that they have to form an opinion on the relative quality each of the finalists. Sometimes, but not always, they request the full manuscript of those who they rank first.
There are many avenues to publication and Authonomy is just one of many possible routes.
The odds of making are long, but it's always possible. New authors are signed every year.

I know you are mad, but what do you really hope to accomplish with that post? I would honestly suggest that you do as Chill is doing, and leave the subject alone, the only thing this will lead to is bannings and more hurt feelings. Sounds sappy, but whatever.
Edit: Nevermind, the lockdown icon means you went too far.
