imo charlie is right, the terms have been adopted by retards and now i as well am forced to stay away from saying i listen to rap/rappers, although that is not how it used to be, now hip-hop, MC, verses, rhymes, lyricist etc are the terms used to describe the music the artists and their work.

it sickens me that pun, smalls, black thought, wu tang, old mobb, big L, old em etc are in the same sentence as it slug eyedea IT, and Even LIL wayne.

edit:
Seriously.... lil wayne... the best rapper alive.... someone needs to rip that kid apart a couple of times

It a subtle and arguable distinction but that explains it.

That being said, you can pretty much tell a rapper from his lyrics which consist mainly about; being hard, being the best, how others are worse than him, how much money he has, how much dirt he's done, how many ho's hes fucked, how many niggaz he's shot, etc. Also the lyrics are usually ebonically spoken and words and phrases are never complex. Which is why it appeals to such a broad audience, any moron can understand it.
Also the beats are generally more catchy and the song is less about the verses and more about the chorus which is the same phrase(s) repeated like 5 times.

example: Soulja Boy Off In This Hoe
Watch Me Crank It
Watch Me Roll
Watch Me Crank Dat Soulja Boy
Then Super Man Dat Hoe
Now Watch Me Do
(Crank Dat Soulja Boy)
Now Watch Me you
(Crank Dat Soulja Boy)
Now Watch Me you
(Crank Dat Soulja Boy)
Now Watch Me you
(Crank Dat Soulja Boy)

Now some pseudo underground, take slug for example, has really shitty annoying songs like this with repeated chorus, but you can tell by the lyrics it's not rap, but it's still trash imo. I hate this song so bad:
Chorus (repeated)

It's nothing but sunshine
It's all sunshine
It's nothing but sunshine
It's nothing but sunshine
It's all sunshine
It's nothing but sunshine
It's nothing but sunshine
It's all sunshine
It's nothing but sunshine
It's nothing but sunshine
It's all sunshine
It's nothing but sunshine
It's nothing but sunshine
It's all sunshine
It's nothing but sunshine
etc.

2 different genres, equally shitty.

So keeping the underground/mainstream issue out (in my opinion, that should be a separate issue), I was essentially correct?

It's like watching a dog chase its tail for decades; the small difference being that the tail is an actual piece of shit.

Words used containing some form of the word "shit" = 18
What do I win?

sub the word hip-hop with rap/rock and you are correct.

Generalizing rock with mainstream shit on the radio is like having hip hop generalized by Soulja Boy when that's not even related to hip hop at all.
And otherwise you probably couldn't name one good metal band =/ so why write it off ?
pretty fakeshit for someone who's "trying to keep it real"
unless you're proud of being this elitist ignorant "hip hop music genre only kthx"
good music is good music; doesn't matter the genre.

I didn't really mean this to be taken literally, I just used it as an example of how what he was saying wasn't applicable or could also be applied to any genre. I just worded it badly.
And yea, even though I don't like metal I can name a few good bands easily. Children of Bodom, Iron Maiden, and my personal favorite AleStorm.

Blah. Sorry about that then ;o

It's not about mainstream or underground, because they are both full of shit.
It is about the gems inbetween.

Yea, as far as music goes, no one respects another's opinion, so let's just keep the songs coming.

I've posted this before. Definitely one of my favorite songs of all time, Hip Hop Legends vs Comic Book Characters. Check pt.1 if you like.

Last Emperor - Secret Wars pt. 2

A little Raze. Sample is hot, can't remember the original though.

Doujah Raze - Now you wanna Know

And finally, something new to indulge in. His sophomore album 88 Keys and Counting is absoulutely ridiculous.

Grieves - Unedible

Hell is other people.

Binary Star - Slang Blade

Binary Star - KGB

I found out about these guys through some friends and they are so good yet no one ever talks about it. These are my favorite songs on this album called Masters of the Universe. I think you can get it for free now.

Cuz Binary Star, and indie rap and most of the rappers need to find a better subject than "real hip hop" to rap about. That shit is as old as rapping about all the other tired street matter. It's why an album like MOTU is good for maybe a year, then you go back and listen and find the lyrics sorely lacking, cuz they talkin about shit.

Thats dumb. What are wu tang's and Rakim's lyrics about? Nothing much more than what you just said for most of their songs. Subject matter is one of the least important aspects of making good hip hop. Hell, Del has a song about dirty people needing to wash themselves and its good. I listen to Biggie and talks about gangster type shit, but I don't listen to 50 cent simply cause the music sucks. You can't explain which elements are going to make a good song because its a combination of all of them.

And btw, Nas is like my favorite mc of all time, yet even he has some gangster rap type crappy songs and some good silly verses that don't make any sense other than they sound cool over the beat. Is there something so wrong for liking something just for sounding good?

I mean check out My Melody by Eric B. and Rakim, most of his lyrics are just about how good he is at rhyming, which about every mc does and some point or another (or in every freaking song), yet because its him doing it so well it just works.

I have nothing against gangsta rap.
But have you heard Masters of the universe? There is a werewolf song and then they bitch about other rappers. Yes, I have summed up the best indie album of 1999 or whatever for you. And it was lame.

Subject matter does matter.
What I hate about "underground" hip hop is they suck and whine. At least the pop artists suck and brag.

And did you really just tell me Wu Tang had no substance? Yeah ok. Rakim, maybe, but that's why the old funk died. He too had nothing to rap about. His best rap is rapping about his own technique... cool, but it dies too.

A classic, and probably posted earlier.

Nothing's wrong with liking stuff that sounds good. But I don't like how many whiny girly emcees there are... -_-;; yes, OneBLo's a girl.

Ok, someone mentioned T.I I'm not even going to bother looking back. T.I,50 Cent, Soulja Boy,Flo Rida, and all other main stream is all about making fucking money. If any of you watched 50 cents show on mtv ( lol ) all he talks about his money and business opportunity. I doubt he gives a damn shit if his music makes sense or not.
Not me, but is my friend and he plays starcraft too :D
He knows what he is fucking talking about, shit he introduced me to underground 3 years ago in school. Fuck without him I would probably be listening to Young Joc, who is also all about making "doe"

TI can actually rap. His multis are nice and considering whats on the radio IMO hes the best of the "mainstream" popular rappers atm. You cant compare 50 cent, Soulja boy, and Flo Rida to T.I..

Ludacris is good too if it isnt his own song ;D

of the guys who actually get radio play id say.

#1 lupe fiasco
#2 T.I.
#3 Ludacris

at least currently.

Lupe doesnt get MUCH airplay but enough to not be in the talib kweli/little brother/etc category

Nas is on the radio.
You can't beat these lyrics, I have them memorized lol so I don't even have to copy and paste :

Freedom or jail, clips inserted, a baby's bein born same time my man is murdered, the beginning and end as far as rap go, it's only natural, I explain my plateau, and also, what defines my name first it was Nasty, but times have changed ask me now, I'm the artist, but hardcore, my science for pain I spent time in the game, kept my mind on fame saw fiends shoot up, and do lines of cocaine saw my close friends shot, flatline am I sane? that depends, carry Mac-10's to practice my aim on rooftops, tape cd covers to trees line the barrel up with your weak picture then squeeze street scriptures for lost souls, in the crossroads to the corner thugs hustlin for cars that cost dough to the big dogs livin large, takin it light pushin big toys, gettin nice, enjoyin your life
is what you make it, suicide, few try to take it belt tied around they neck in jail cells naked heaven and hell, rap legend, presence is felt and of course n.a.s are the letters that spell.

You can't really beat that :D

ya Id rate nas and jay-z over all of them. But I didnt really bother because Jay-Z is kinda eh over his past 2 albums and Nas doesnt get much airplay at all. Was just going by whats on the radio. IMO Phonte, Elzhi, Joe Budden > Those 3 as well (lupe is probably equal to them)

and OH MY GOD I dont know all these underground guys......
please I just listed people off the top of my head. They werent on MTV2 when I listened to them. They all suck IMO. Very few of them sound good at all. Zion I is pretty decent....dunno how underground "they" are. Meh. Little Brother was "underground" and their "underground" album sounded the best out of all of theirs (except maybe chitlin circuit) stop classfying something as underground or mainstream. Like testie said......if it sucks it sucks regardless of whether its popular or not.

Most people just try to sound cool because they listen to stuff that other people dont listen to and act like snobs about it.
