WASHINGTON (CNN) – Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy is under heavy fire from a state chapter of the National Organization for Women for his decision to back Barack Obama over Hillary Clinton.
In a sharply critical statement, the New York state chapter of NOW took aim at Kennedy Monday for what it called an "ultimate betrayal," and suggested the Massachusetts Democrat "can't or won't" handle the idea of Clinton becoming President of the United States.
"Sen. Kennedy’s endorsement of Hillary Clinton’s opponent in the Democratic presidential primary campaign has really hit women hard," said the statement. "Women have forgiven Kennedy, stuck up for him, stood by him, hushed the fact that he was late in his support of Title IX, the ERA, the Family Leave and Medical Act to name a few."
"And now the greatest betrayal! We are repaid with his abandonment!" the statement continues. "He’s picked the new guy over us. He’s joined the list of progressive white men who can’t or won’t handle the prospect of a woman president who is Hillary Clinton."
After months on the sidelines, Kennedy formally endorsed Obama Monday during a speech at American University, despite reported pleas from the Clinton campaign that he remain neutral. He hailed the Illinois senator for his potential to be a “president who appeals to the hopes of those who still believe in the American dream."
Kennedy also praised Clinton and John Edwards in his speech, saying that “whoever is our nominee will have my enthusiastic support."
But the NOW state chapter suggested Monday Kennedy's decision was a larger representation of society’s ongoing disrespect for women's rights.
"This latest move by Kennedy is so telling about the status of and respect for women’s rights, women’s voices, women’s equality, women’s authority and our ability – indeed, our obligation — to promote and earn and deserve and elect, unabashedly, a president that is the first woman after centuries of men who ‘know what’s best for us.’”
Meanwhile, the national chapter of NOW sought to distance itself from the state chapter’s comments, issuing a statement Monday evening that praised Kennedy's record with respect to women's rights.
"Though the National Organization for Women Political Action Committee has proudly endorsed Sen. Hillary Clinton for president, we respect Sen. Kennedy's endorsement," NOW President Kim Gandy said. "We continue to encourage women everywhere to express their opinions and exercise their right to vote."
Kennedy's office has not returned CNN's request for comment.
I'm pretty sure that I've seen the military budget is our largest expense by a very, very large margin.
Other way around.
Voting for Obama would be a terrible terrible mistake. His presidency would be disastrous for this country on a different level. I hope people start realizing the danger of him, his two contenders or any other mainstream establishment, corporate funded, status quo "promising" candidate.
...? Care to explain why?
And that thing on Hillary is so pathetic. Voting based on gender is stupid.
i wonder how many people 2 months ago would of guessed that Giuliani would be obliterated before super tuesday.
well unless he pulls a miracle upset in Florida today, we're going to see the republican field thin out further
ad: and i wonder if the kennedys will be able to help obama put enough of a dent in super tuesday to keep him realistically in contention. she's got one hell of a stranglehold that's for sure.
Wow, I hope Barack Obama wins. The Clinton campaign's tactics are so nasty. Also, NOW's statements are so ridiculous. if you extend their logic, does it mean that you are against blacks and is racist if you don't vote for obama.
And that thing on Hillary is so pathetic. Voting based on gender is stupid.
Voting on anything other that the quality of the candidate himself and his ideals is not just stupid, it's fucking retarded and you should be castrated. People who vote based on religion, gender or race make me fucking sick.

Like others have said, I'd love it if you enlightened us and told us why you think this.
I really hope any of the democratic candidates wins the election. Id pick Obama as my first choice. I just dont see the rest of the world standing another 4 years of republican rule if they are going to continue the way they have the last 8 years. Looks like Bush is trying to patch up his record atm. Hope he continues with that and doesnt do anything stupid like attacking Iran before the election ;/ Not that I think he would. If Obama wins I think the future of the world will look a lot brighter than it does today. (Fucking Swedish winter with sundown at 4pm >_< )

How is religion not part of the quality and ideals of a candidate?

ah, come on. Its not like Mitt Romney is some batshit crazy mormon who wants to nuke Iran.
I can't speak for huckabee after his "lets amend the constitution so it reflects Leviticus part of the bible" but romney is OK. I'll be honest, I'm not too keen on the mormon faith but I would still vote for romney If i was a republican.

How is it? Me being Protestant (on paper) doesn't influence my moral and values at all. An atheist can have the same political aims as a faithful catholic, don't you think?
HEY MAN! you need to add RON PAUL to that poll, buddy. don't just go along with the mainstreammedia censorship. The Constitution FTW!
btw, have you all seen the financial worth of these candidates? I was reading through money magazine, and most candidates have about 50million in assets. with the exception of obama, who barely has 1million. but still.. comon thats still a shitload. But my biggest surprise (and disgust) was Mitt Romney. 200million! albiet he is a businessman, it's rather sickening to my idea of democracy and the mudded politics that Romney is winning by such a big margin in the early times. I mean.. this guy didn't even start his campaign when everyone else was. He was like, "ohh why not start in feburary next year" even if he was joking, his actions say otherwise. Is that the attitude of someone who really wants to better this country or someone who's just going to use the office and leverage that position of power for more money and who knows what other devious schemes. We saw Bush the elite of the elite oilman fuck up our economy as well as fuck up a whole nation. Hilary isn't so clean of strings either. in fact most candidates represent the wealthy and elitist interests. As i know it, only Ron Paul is the one who doesn't give in to elitist buisness ties, the only one who actually believes and wants to obey the constitution. The source of funds says a lot; endorsement money that wants something in return for most of these generalizing, twofaced, constitution shreding agents of corporations, compard to 6 million in one day donations from people across the nation. ill admit my point of view is not unbiased, but let me ask, who does that? politicians these days would never dare to do what ron paul did: running on true constitutionalism with no corporate interests and trusting the people to fund them. No, you must first get rich by snobbing with the wealthy, and then serve their interests in office. Anyways, im pretty disgusted with America. I am now discovering how enslaved we are, even compared to Communist China. America has so many do's and don'ts... we pay almost half of our income to the government, you can't even bulid a house on a piece of land you buy with regulations after regulations and expensive requirements. and thanks to bush, the fbi can just take you away, torture you, and convict you without a lawyer or trial. If they fucking say you're a terrorist, you're a fucking terrorsit. While we ignorantly sing "land of the free and home of the brave", we in reality are the land of the weak and home of the slave" Our problems arise becaues we deviate from the constitution. banking, overtaxing, foreign entaglements. The constitution is the answer, and the only one backing that up right now is Ron Paul.
And that thing on Hillary is so pathetic. Voting based on gender is stupid.

It's not labels I'm concerned with, but rather the actual religious views.
Take Pat Robertson for example. He ran for president in '88. I don't care what he calls himself, but I do care about the fact that he believes "the rapture" is imminent. Why? Because such a belief impacts what sort of decisions he's going to make in office. "The environment? Who gives a fuck, the rapture is coming."
