My mother's very close friend was one of the firefighters killed in the collapse of the first tower....Not a day goes by that i don't think about 9/11/01 in some way...I was in NYC on 9/8/01 for a red sox/yankees game...The thought that it was the last time that I saw the towers in person and that I was there only 3 days before the attacks will give me chills to the day I die.

And also, fanatacist, I'm incredibly moved that people do selfless things like this. I hope that more of mankind learns to act as your father did.

EDIT: HB just read your post and I can't thank people like you enough, for helping, consoling or just plain being there for complete strangers, the world needs more people like you.

Many historic events have happened on the 11th of september

On September 11, 1973, less than three months after the first failed coup attempt (Tanquetazo), and less than a month after the Chamber of Deputies, where the Opposition held a majority, condemned Allende's alleged breaches of the constitution and requested his forcible removal, the Chilean military overthrew president Salvador Allende, who died during the coup. US intervention in Chilean politics and support to Allende's opposition has been recognized, especially with the declassification in 1998 of documents concerning the Project FUBELT operations, although its exact nature is still controversed. General Augusto Pinochet took over and established an anti-communist military dictatorship which lasted until 1990.

Ylva Anna Maria Lindh (19 June 1957–11 September 2003) was a Swedish Social Democratic politician who served as Swedish Minister for Foreign Affairs from 1998 until her murder in 2003.

Anna Lindh died on the early morning of September 11, 2003, following a knife attack in Stockholm on the afternoon of September 10. Just after 4 p.m., she was attacked while shopping in the ladies' department at the Nordiska Kompaniet department store. She was stabbed in the chest, stomach and arms.

Just to name two =p

I think its very important that we remember history so that we know our roots and what humanity is capable of and so that we dont do the same mistake twice.

Edited due to warning recieved through PM.

It just pisses me off, all this wallowing in melodramatic victimhood bullshit.
Especially if this event didn't really affect you personally. I think it's disrespectful to the people who actually lost beloved ones in the event, amplifying the expression of your so-called "sorrow", all but mocking the relevant people's pain.

another edit: I just saw that I can't message the responsible mod (due to tempban) to ask if further censorship is demanded, so I just hope this will be good enough.

yet another edit: My anger was mostly directed towards TheOvermind77's and fanatacist's posts. Wordings like that make my blood boil.

This day is the first anniversary that falls on the same day of the week as the actual tragedy.

I'm surprised that today at school I hear almost nothing of it; it seems like many people either are trying to forget it or just would rather not mention it.

Hopefully generations down the road will still know of the atrocities that occured on that day and will be told of the many brave and heroic souls that gave their everything to try to save those victims.
Awaken my child, and embrace the glory that is your birthright. Know that I am the Overmind; the eternal will of the Swarm, and that you have been created to serve me.

a few months before september 11th the eighth grade went on the class graduation trip to nyc. i remember standing at the top of the towers and snapping pictures, it was a safe place - steel, capitalism, the big city, lights! i forgot my fear of heights clicking away. we watched a broadway that night and everything was good.

this past summer i went up to nyc with a few friends to meet up with some people from canada. it was lots of fun, great times. a block away from the ruins people shop happily, and i remember looking up to try to visualize where i once stood with a plastic camera. what's next?

what is your point? that we shouldn't have this thread? that we should have other threads about other "worse" things before we have this thread?

yes, the holocaust is probably, according to a reasonable person, "worse" than september 11th. it's probably safe to assume, throughout the history of human civilization spanning thousands of years filled with war, poverty, and death, there are "worse" things than a terrorist act that destroys two buildings and kills several thousand people. thank you for that great insight.

does that mean we should post "i've seen worse than this" in every thread about every bad thing?

should we post "i've seen a better game" in every OSL finals thread, or "i've seen a better tournament" in every tournament thread that isn't about the OSL?

do you post "i've read better" when reading a newspost because you've read "war and peace"?

i ask again, what is your point of your post?

Well we never see any thread remembering the dead from WW1 and 2... :s But then again this resulted in 2wars in the Middle EAst ( btw do we remember dead arab citizens?)

But I do agree that this was a cruel attack on the people.

In my opinion, remembering this event and memorializing what happened does not automatically mean you don't honor other bad things, even if you believe causation exists.

It must be possible to see this thread as a simply intended solely for that beneficial, remembrance purpose, not as some sort of attack in not remembering the Arabic civilians that died in the Middle East.

Also, simply because this thread exists and someone posts in it doesn't make him or everyone somehow remember the dead of WW1 or WW2 less. It's just a matter of time and relevance. If it were 1950 we'd have VJ-day threads and if it were 1995 we'd have threads about the tearing down of the Berlin wall. It's relative.

WW1 and WW2 threads can be made during Veteran's day or during the associated anniversaries of pearl harbour and the end of either war.

Today is the day to remember those who died in 9/11. Today is NOT the day to lament over the consequences of 9/11 and any wars which you believe might/might not be a direct result of 9/11.

Please keep this out of this thread. Make another if you deem necessary. As I said earlier, either pay your respects or just move on to another thread, no need for such comments.

Every year, I just remember where I was when I first heard of the attacks. I was in 8th grade, so I was still young and relatively idealistic, confident in the US's invulnerability. When I first heard, I was shocked that something like this could happen to the US... I also felt sadness for the incredible amount of senseless death...

Has it already been six years?

Feels like yesterday...

My dad was living in D.C. during 9/11 about 3 blocks away from the Pentagon. I remember after I got back from school, I immediately called him to see if he was ok. Luckily he was fine; however, he told me he had a couple friends on one of the flights that crashed.

Since then, he has willingly toured Iraq twice helping out the Marines and is going back a third time in a couple of weeks.

The guy is my hero.

Not sure what to think of the comments myself. There is a strong sense of theatre and abstract sentimentalism surrounding the memorial which has the air of fabrication, like the feelings conjured by the ending of Gone with the Wind. Nonetheless it's better to let people post what they will. It may be some sort of Sentimental Education to them.
