The first question you should ask is what kind of character do I want to play? How does he/she [i]feel[i]? Once you have you character archetype/idea build the character. Then figure out three questions. 1) how did they attain their class? 2) how did they attain their profession? 3) why are they now adventuring? For my character the answers are, or could be, family, fortune, folly (or family, necessity, justice). Either way, answering those three questions gets everyone the core "story" of a character. Twist as needed from there in order to get the effect you desire.

Aside from high level monsters not being powerful enough in 4e, 4e was really good. And they fixed it. But 5e doesn't budget outsized power well, so there are monsters with like cr 3 which will one shot you but have low defense. Which is OK if your group is super metagamey and so knows which monsters are the real threat(so you don't waste actions on defensive monsters) but if for any reason the enemy gets init on you they can wipe your team just by virtue of going first. They also apparently dole out advantage/disadvantage too readily (the power of advantage depends on the target number but it's a bit better than +5 if you need to roll a 10 [due to crits] Edit: Maybe i am more disappointed looking at the system because it looks like Wizards purposely unlearned a lot of the things that it had appeared they learned with 4e even as they clearly learned some of the lessons. (Lack of weapon focus equivalents are a really good example)

I could probably stop anytime, I just got carried away when first determining the back story and now I just want to complete it as an exercise for myself. There's a couple things about my character im a little disappointed with but overall I *think* it'll be good. Also I'd just like to be clear on this---I think most people seem to assume I'm going to be chosen for this (and I suppose to some degree I am as well). I want to say that I hope I'll be given the same chance as others to do this, and while I would be disappointed if not chosen, I'd be perfectly happy watching along with the rest of TL. There should be zero pressure on Asmo to choose anyone other than who he deems fit for his game for whatever reason. (and yes it would be funny if I died 'cause I was an idiot during encounters )

I guess I'm mostly posting this for the benefit of Wave since you seemed so intent on me applying. I just wanted to share why I think it would disingenuous of me to do so.

I've been a part of four tabletop campaigns (a long time ago) but two died out in less than two months and the other two died out after the first session. More importantly if this lasts into spring any job I get for spring season will have an irregular schedule that will screw up my ability to play. I might not even have consistent internet (I often work at remote field sites). I guess I'm mostly posting this for the benefit of Wave since you seemed so intent on me applying. I just wanted to share why I think it would disingenuous of me to do so. Haha it's ok buddy. I don't want to force anyone into doing anything they don't want to do. I mean though...did those sessions die out because you weren't interested or was it another party's fault? If it's because you think you won't have time or you'll lose interest yourself then I totally understand. I can (almost) guarantee that interest in general in this game won't die out here considering how many of us have been wanting to do this for so long.

Feel free to use any class or race that's in the 5E Player's Handbook. The fact that it's not in any of my worldbuilding documents only means I haven't gotten around to telling that race's story in Iris yet (and I will, I promise). All the vanilla PC races already exist, so use any that you want. At worst, I'll work with you to help you nudge your character into the Iris-context for that race. At best, you'll actually help me write some of the lore from your race. And either way it won't guarantee or disqualify anyone. I might actually be posting some sample characters today, so maybe that'll give those of you who are a bit lost an idea of how I would do it (and then you can proceed to do whatever you feel is appropriate). Reminder, Deadline is tomorrow! All characters should be dropped by Wednesday, Dec 10 4:00am GMT (GMT+00:00)!
