the picture.. it has a "fold" type thing down the center... each side is of the same place from 2 different angles... the people on the left sled = the right sled except that their clothing colour is rotated to the right... the fear of non-conformity? or sumthing..? iono.. the fear of being different... was he a schitzo? The bottom half of the picture is continous (kinda) yet the top half is discontinous...

-there are no footprints -all of the houses have lights on except one on the left -the 3 children in the distance seem to be alone, everyone is moving away from them -noone seems very happy, its like thier expressions are forced upon them all of them kind of hint that the artist is afraid of being alone (goes with the "leave everything out of the painting" clue that shows emptyness and cold nighttime) the person probably doesnt want to be isolated by everyone, and fears not being with other people, shown by the fact that everything is in a pair or a group

(he didint show up the apointed time he said he would to tell people the meaning) and just so you people still guessing can rest easy the painting is a river. the fear is drowning Btw i major in the study of art. it took me 10 seconds to see this.

Okay this is what I think. Look at the original painting, and then look at the one painted by the patient. I think all of the ideas suggested before is only explained by the patient's (and anyone's) inability to replicate perfectly the original painting. But what's the one thing that's blatantly a deliberate difference? There are NO adults in the patient's painting, even the ones that were originally driving the sleighs. It shows a world where kids are having fun without any grown-ups. The main reason I thought of this was because I'd heard of similar strange disorders. For example, Mark Chapman, the man who assassinated John Lennon, was found to be a deeply disturbed person. However, throughout his life, everyone recalled that he was always very good with children. He worked as a counselor, or something, and he was loved by little kids. However, his relationships with adults were always very poor. He eventually began to hallucinate "little people" and perceived himself as their "king." A moral preference for the young over the matured and a fear/mistrust of adults are also central motifs of the book Catcher in the Rye, Chapman's favorite book (he even carried it with him on the day of the murder). I think the artist has a phobia of adults or becoming an adult.

i'd say that he fears children. all the people in the bottom are 3s, and there are 3 sleds. Everything on the top is orderly, with two people each. I think he had a wife or something, and then went insane because he was so scared of children coming in and messing things up. it has something to do with that i believe.

I think the artist has a phobia of adults or becoming an adult. i really like your thoughts your theory seems to be true with the fact that he lived in his own fantisies and that it is quite an abnormal phobia but "datcracka"'s comment on digg really caught my eye. he said that the artist did not get along with people, or did not trust them. this could also go along with your theory, but it is also different. datcracka also says that the artist left out the power lines and the road, almost trapping the people inside the town. and its too dark to have a normal picture, but too bright to show the stars like that. he thinks the artist may have thought of himself as a god, and he decides how he wants to translate the picture into his own painting. it also goes with the fact that the painting DOES look like its a snowglobe, like hes trapping the little town and making it how he wants it to be im really enjoying this painting and i almost dont want to hear the true phobia, i like reading what other people think about it ^^
