Yeah I'm pretty sure this is funnier than the SNL skit would be... well except it's real so it's not as funny that way

Anyone remember Vermin Supreme? I'm having flashbacks to him when I watch that debate.

Sounds like the script for a bad mafia movie. "Hey if you don't pay us more then your website might not always be available." Nothing is allowed yet. It's going into the comment period and will likely be changed during. The fact that it is even moving forward at all is an insult and shows a total lack of reason (or an attachment to high "donations") by the members of the committee. Would you go a step further and say the possibility of insensible committee members is proof enough that they should not have had this power in the first place? Or, should there be a transgression on defined limits to their power, they should be fearful of removal? A firing squad should do the trick nicely. In all seriousness, how can anyone find this a good idea worth exploring? I don't really want to play devil's advocate on this one, since most of my arguments on social issues are already construed as the same. My only point is that I think these appointed positions with great power cannot be trusted to act responsibly and should have greater checks than already present on abuse of power. No citizen in a free country should be required to pay attention to 4 month comment periods on a referendum of free speech ... none should take place at all! It was parodied with Adam's Hitchhiker's and the planning committee. But I still find well-meaning types arguing that the problem is just getting the right people in the position, and not simply the position itself paired with human fallibility. But hey maybe I'm a negative nancy and companies paying for faster pipelines will never trend towards slower traffic speeds compared to what I'm experiencing now. Your right and I would probably point the finger to the power of lobby in the US. Its easy to forget your morals and "abuse" your power when people keep shoving large piles of money into your lap if you "represent" there interests. You're right about the lobbying angle. To a certain extent, it represents an ever-present flaw in giving power to the few, because it's easier to influence a few levers than a great many. But even lacking kickbacks or the related praise from big important news publications, sometimes a man or woman gets into these positions by political calculation (Presidential appointees generally are) that has no business being there, and sometimes comprise a majority on these sorts of committees. Even well-intentioned people might make all the wrong decisions for all the right reasons. I don't want to wait for some Congressional force or even direct popular pressure on the Presidency for these types to be gone (and just another lobbyist) with the damage already done. It ought not to be in the hands of the few, and if a committee may indeed make recommendations, they should be referred to the people's legislature, the people's representatives--people who could be out of there in the course of two years or less. FCC regulations with the force of law that are this sweeping in change shouldn't be 5 dudes in suits and a 4 month waiting period, and I'm saying any 5 dudes at all. It seem like the problem is not the power in the hands of the few, but the fact that what they do is often not considered illegal and unacceptable. In well functioning democracies it is ok to put even a lot of power in the hands of the few (within reason) as long as there are laws and cultural norms that consider misusing that power to be a bad thing. Public pressure and justice system should do the rest. Problem I see in US (and other countries) politics is that conflict of interest is defined too loosely and a lot of what common sense would consider conflict of interest is not treated as such. They get flak for illegal and unacceptable all the time, but there's that sliding scale on assembling a cohesive opposition with media presence to bring pressure to bear. They act, you must scrounge for the pressure or with some lawyers and a case. If it doesn't affect some big business or huge cause célèbre, sorry its the FCC and there's nothing you can do about it. Oh but now they've really ticked off a wide swath of citizens, its rescinded and they have egg on their face in the next week's TV shows and news articles.
On the second issue, its been more and more the case that illegal is in the eye of the beholder. Drug policy, immigration policy, incarceration laws, separation of powers between legislative and executive, discretionary powers, plenary powers etc. We're left wondering who wields the stick if the same administration able to appoint people does afford his attorney general the ability to say its a-ok, nothing illegal here. Not the lack of common sense per se, but who's in the position to be the Grand Sharif of Common Sense.

This is what happens when the popular ideas/positions are spoken about by non-politicians. They go and say what they were only supposed to strongly imply.

Are you suggesting that two of the fine men on that stage aren't "politicians"?
Yeah, I thought they same thing about the Cowboy and the Regular Guy, they aren't politicians.
But the Biker and the Curmudgeon are clearly are cut out to be politicians.

In the United States it is become a tradition to elect people based on party alone and because the United States, on the world political spectrum, is on the right, very far right if you're only looking at industrialized countries, we get our fair share of right wing nuts, some of whom are in mainstream politics...
Here in my home state of NH, we accidentally elected a Nazi to office a few years ago, because he was the Republican candidate.
When asked why he didn't tell any body he was a Nazi when he was running, he responded "no one asked me for my views"
Apparently, we didn't ask him much, being Republican was good enough.

Top VA Health Official Resigns Amid Scandal Over Treatment Delays
Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki says he's accepted the resignation of the department's undersecretary for health, a day after the two officials testified before Congress about a growing controversy delays in treatment.
"Today, I accepted the resignation of Dr. Robert Petzel, undersecretary for health in the Department of Veterans Affairs," Shinseki said in a statement cited by Reuters.
"As we know from the veteran community, most veterans are satisfied with the quality of their VA health care, but we must do more to improve timely access to that care," Shinseki said.
As under secretary for health at the VA, Petzel oversaw the health needs of veterans under the department's care. Before coming to the under secretary's post, he served as network director of the VA Midwest Health Care Network, based in Minneapolis, Minn., according to his official bio.
As we reported on Thursday, Shinseki told a Senate panel then that he was "mad as hell" about reports that delays in treatment of veterans at some hospitals may have led to as many as 40 deaths.
Shinseki had told the panel that he would not fire any of the department's senior leadership until an inspector general's report was finished in August.
But, as The Washington Post writes, Sen. Mark Begich, Alaska Democrat, had pressed Shinseki "to get rid of those who had been found untrustworthy through fraudulent statements or documents."
"Sometimes you've got to have some heads roll to get the system to shape up," Begich said. Link

I think most people comprehend that the VA doesn't do anything on a dime. The people who are 'responsible' for these problems go back decades. Looking at someone like Shinseki or people who were recently added to VA and trying to pin the totality of responsibility on them is ridiculous.
Those people died because the VA has been in a state of disrepair for decades. There is/was no way to resolve the decades old issues in even 8 years especially when you consider the current state of the opposition party.
What is it you expected him to do/say?

The VA has been atrocious since its inception. I am sure you will find some way to blame every failure of Government on the 'opposition party'. There couldn't be a systemic rational for Government failure based on economic, philosophical, and psychological maxims. Ask most other veterans. They'll all tell you the same. Yet...the VA is held up as a model for those wanting to increase the Governments all ready insatiable grip on the healthcare industry, practices, and standards.

the va isn't a unified system and regional administration may differ. charges of atrocious service are uncontextualized and magnified by some anecdotal examples. you can look at RAND studies on VA quality for a better picture
if we take the VA system's occasional delay of care and compare it with the vast swath of uninsured and untreated cases in the private sector, pretty obvious that VA is still superior compared to no govt presence healthcare.
