Hi, honest nubby question here:

I'd like to play Dota 2. Not sure where to start though... I have no idea what all this invite and key stuff is (aside from the fact that the key is a beta key) that people are talking about. I had heard/read that Dota 2 is free to play/download, but that doesn't seem to be the case from what I see here. Can anyone please shed some light on what the process is to play this darn game? Ty sirs.

Yes, 40$ gets you one from Valve and 2 extras right away.

I believe the point synapse is making is that if you invest like 5 more minutes you can save yourself ~35$. By purchasing Treasure Keys ($2.50 each) from the dota2 store and trading them to other people. I bolded the part you seemed to be missing.

I think it's supposed to give you 1 extra. Either way it is much cheaper to find a trader.
I liked Dota before it was Mainstream.

I bought it for full price (because fuck yeah, Valve!) and it does -not- include any extra beta invites. (Purchased on Sept 14)

Just a bump to mention that with the recent invite waves that are going on, invites are generally going for as low as 1 or 2 keys, making them even cheaper.
