A young couple has died in Kahoku, Ishikawa Prefecture, after falling into a hole on a beach that was dug as a birthday prank for the husband, police said. One of the couple's friends called a fire station at about 10:45 p.m. Saturday and said company employee Yuki Demura, 23, and his wife Risa, 23, had fallen in the hole on Osaki beach. Rescue workers pulled the couple out about an hour later. They were taken to a hospital but were confirmed dead shortly afterward, police said. The couple's upper bodies were covered by sand, police said. They are believed to have suffocated. Risa and five friends of the couple reportedly dug the 2.4-meter-square and 2.5-meter-deep hole Saturday afternoon as a surprise for Yuki, whose birthday was on Sept. 1. They put a sheet over the hole and covered the sheet with sand, they said.
A mat was found inside the hole, and shovels and a ladder were close by.
Risa is believed to have brought Yuki to the beach from their house at night and fallen into the hole with him at about 10 p.m.
Would't it be much funnier if you saw them fall into the hole... and then you helped them out of it with a laugh after giving them a hard time. Also what in the christ an 8.2 foot deep hole that's unsafe to dig even in sand, let alone fall down unknowing WHAT IN THE WORLD. Stupidity overwhelming.

Oh my god. That is like over 20 tons of sand that they digged. How many days did they prepare this prank, and how come no officials came to stop them while in middle of this huge project on a (public?) beach.
What if someone else fell into the same damn hole? This is so mind boggling. A 2 metre drop can easily paralyse someone from the neck down at the minimum already. Seriously what were they thinking?

Yo ima dig a massive whole in the beach and let you and your girlfriend fall into it, that oke?
Well it's still dangerous I see what your doing here
Sure telling them beforehand ruins the surprise but they would have still lived.
If they dug a hole 1.5 meters deep and 4 meters in diameter nothing would have gone wrong, then it would not have been dangerous and you didn't have to inform those you are about to prank.
On August 30 2011 22:29 Motivate wrote: can i just ask how did they actually die? it said they suffocated but how would that happen if it's a hole? presumably it filled in?
Sand is very volatile and collapses when stuff starts moving. It's also very fine so ends up clogging your longues. that's what happened :'(
Hmm, I wonder why they both died from it. People dont die that easily normally. There was even a mat in the hole to soften the landing. Break a leg or something, yes, but why did they suffocate?
On August 30 2011 22:22 Doraemon wrote: that's just ridiculous...2.5m deep hole? how do you even get out of there
Really not as deep as it sounds. I'm 6'4, with a reach of over 8 feet. I could likely grab the edge of the hole while standing. Even if these people were like 5'6 or something, they should be able to jump and grab the edge. Besides, one of them should of easily been capable of lifting the other up so they could grab the edge. The article really isn't clear, but I would assume the walls caved in or something. I don't understand why, if your going to do a ridiculous prank like this, you wouldn't be there watching or something. Unfortunate event, but as the saying goes: shit happens.

can't really grab onto sand :S especially when you have to jump to reach, 6"4 is extremely tall for an asian. i agree with you that it seems the hole collapsed as soon as they fell in. horrible :S
as another poster mentioned 2.4x2.4x2.5m hole of sand is extremely heavy, around 1500+ s.g. that's 21 tonnes....how no one noticed and said anything is amazing..
edit: again, as mentioned above, does this constitute as manslaughter?
Okay, I'm pretty these sorts of pranks (making people fall in holes) (pranks on the beach) have been done before. But what I'm facepalming about is why the pranksters couldn't save the couple fast enough. That being said, I'm just being captain hindsight here. Shit does happen. It's sad, but it's one of those situations where you won't gain much satisfaction by being mad, or gaining justice by punishing the people who caused it.
2.5m is seriously deep. I'm not against the prank in theory but it should be obvious to anyone that falling that far without expecting it is going to cause injury.
On August 30 2011 22:47 julianto wrote: But what I'm facepalming about is why the pranksters couldn't save the couple fast enough.
Really? I mean when the couple fell into the hole, they probs fell over. Meaning that that they would have had to dig an almost 2,5m hole again to reach their heads. That does not happen with shovels before the victim suffocates.

It's sand. Jumping and grabbing the edge makes it collapse most likely.

Yeah, even an unexpected 50cm fall is likely to cause at least a strained ankle, you can pretty easily jump down 2.5m but only if you expect it and land properly, if you land poorly it's very likely you're going to get your leg broken or will become paralyzed.
What were their friends thinking? I assume the friends thought that the couple were going to fall into the hole and realize that escape wasn't possible and had decided to wait until help had arrived. Maybe under the stars the husband would look into he eyes of his wife and see everything he had ever wanted in them. And the wife finally overcoming her anxiety, able to express her heart felt love for her husband...
On a more serious note, I hope people will think of the consequences (and plan accordingly) before they do something like this again. My wishes are to the family of the deceased.
I don't find this sad at all. She faced the same fate her boyfriend was gonna face if he fell in alone. Her friends aren't very bright either to not think digging an 8 foot deep hole was a bad idea.
Doesn't seem that deep to me, guess the sand made it worse. Wonder what the point of the prank was... What prank could possibly come of digging a hole for someone to fall into.
sounds like a memorable birthday. must admit that I laughed a bit, yeah such shame and not funny aswell I know, but still..on the other hand honestly how should such a prank be funny at all?..even without the consequences I do not see the fun at all...could be a clever murder aswell, for this sounds jsut too stupid ..
Besides the fact that I find a hole of 2.5m deep a ridiculous huge hole for a prank with serious obvious dangers.
It boggles my mind how they died by suffocation. Weren't there friends close ? I mean if you dig a hole that fucking big and let your friends fall in it wouldn't you be the first to help them get out ? Even more so if you see they're fucking suffocating or wonder what the repercussions where from the 2.5m fall down a hole.....
My condolences go to the couple. What an atrocity and failure to have even a shred of common sense by the unlucky couple's friends.
Yeah, 2.5 meters is pretty extreme. I've done something similar to this at the beach once, not ever covered it up by a sheet, and not near that deep because you end up hitting the water table. What happens is the bottom will pool with water and erode the sides until the bottom is wider than the walls, then the walls will start collapsing in on itself.
I think the sand walls must have collapsed while their friends came near to enjoy the moment. If anyone digs big holes like this, they need to reinforce the walls with wood to prevent collapses.
Something fishy is going on here... Why would you not be there during the prank to watch it/film it? If i spent a day preparing a prank, I would most definitely want to witness it... Yes sure the girl could hv recorded it, but that would 1) give away the prank 2) no camera was found on scene 3) it was at night, how do you record video without lighting?
Also what is very fishy is they died of suffocation. Okay, I could possibly see the sand collapsing over them and getting buried alive, but the article said only their upper bodies were covered in sand. What on earth is going on? Inhaling a bit of sand will not suffocate you.
So yea, more investigation needs to be done... Or maybe just better translation?
only in Japan...but honestly though this is so dumb, and why dig such a deep hole.. at least have a hole that someone can climb out of if they fall in... -_-'
I say it was as good as pranks go. He thought it was his birthday, turned out to be quite the contrary! Darwin Awards material definitely for the waifus part.
I'm not that large, but even I find it hard to grasp how you can suffocate in such a hole.
You/we have to realize, that a 2,5m deep hole doesn't mean 2,5m of sand - because if it collapses, the surrounding sand can't completely "fill" the 2,5 deep hole...if you know what I'm talking about here. For completely filling the hole, you would have to put most of the sand you've dug out back in again.
Even though this is pure speculation: I can only imagine they broke/twisted their legs/ankles from the fall and were somewhat "lying" inside the hole, unable to move, let alone get up, when the walls of the hole collapsed.
It wasn't the fall that killed them, since there was a "mat", by which I'm pretty sure means a mattress (considering the wife helped dig the hole, I doubt she would have had just a rug to cushion the 2.5m fall).
So I would then imagine, when after falling, with sides of the hole unstable, (since it is sand we're talking about), they had more than a ton of sand bury them, which then caused the suffocation.
The hole probably converged as it went deeper. Like a V shaped hole rather than a U. Being 2.5m deep, it would be possible for the 2 of them to be wedged in. The struggle to get free could have collapsed the sides and made it worse.
I'm thinking they were severely inebriated, or else at least one of them should have been able to keep his upper body up out of the sand at the very least
I don't even understand how this could be funny, it just seems like some guy wanted to bury the couple alive. Terrible idea all around, and surprised that no one thought it suspicious that 6 people were digging such a huge hole in the middle of a public beach.

I'm think the most the article's going to say is this part (probably since formal cause of death is still pending): "The couple's upper bodies were covered by sand, police said."
I think we can assume they either fell headfirst (the pit was big enough to flip around in) and got stuck (beach sand isn't exactly stable for digging yourself out of) or that the walls caved in on them.
When we think of this sand pit we aren't thinking of a box or bucket, it's not really a solid/immovable object, the sides shift and you can fall through the 'bottom' of it as well.
We always want to outdo ourselves, throwing a simple surprise birthday party is "lame" you need to take it to the extreme, and then stuff like this happens.

have any of you ever fell unexpectedly before? like going down a flight of stairs in pitch black darkness thinking you've reached the final step, oh wait, there's one more and you get that sudden jolt of surprise as your leg goes further down than intended?

this must be 100x worse.
The worst part about it's all their fault, except maybe the husband who had no knowledge of the hole.
"Fell unexpectedly" doesn't count for the wife who actually helped dig the hole.
This reminds me of the Sarah Silverman episode in which she gets a new neighbour who pulls pranks on everyone, and then the pranked take revenge and accidently kill him with a bucked of paint ...
Can't believe the friends weren't near by...what if some random people, old people, kids came by and died in there ... damn, now it never will feel the same to walk at the beach, maybe some retards made a 8.3 foot deep hole somewhere as a prank for someone and left it unguarded...

I usually don't try and take an elitist stance on humor (because if you do that, you basically don't know what humor is), but I never get the obsession with pranks...they are almost never actually funny and result in humiliation/pain of someone else. Oh I dug a huge hole and you fell in it....what's the punchline?
The stupidity of some people are just mindblowing. I mean what did the expect when they trapped them in a whole with no air support or anything... fucking morons, stuff like this really pisses me off, even though they did do it intentionally. I hope they rot up in prison - They deserve it!
Everything about this is completely ridiculous, 2.5 metres? That's a stupidly deep pit to dig for "prank" purposes, having the prank take place at night? His wife falling in with him? What in the name of christ where they thinking when planning this?
Pretty stupid but I'm surprised how harsh people are being, probably everyone's done something at least once in their life whether they remember it or not where if it had gone wrong it could have ended terribly if you were unlucky.
Examples: jumping out to scare someone, messing with a persons chair while they're in it, pushing someone into pool, racing someone at a place other than a track field.
While obviously the depth of the hole and other factors make it more stupid it's the same general idea where there's obviously a chance it can end terribly but you just don't think about it at the time. If you're going to jump out and scare someone for a laugh are you really thinking " oh wait.. what if they get so scared they jump back and trip, break their neck and die?"
Wow, the idiocy of some people is really astounding.
http://www.fnn-news.com/news/headlines/articles/CONN00206435.html According to the Japanese news the sand was damp when they dug the hole but by the time of the accident it had dried so it crumbled easily... And apparently somebody witnessed them digging the hole and asked them what they were gunna do with it and they said they have a surprise.. if only that guy had told the police.
I fucking hate people that pull pranks. Without doubt they care more about the attention they get than the risks they put on the victim. Fucking children.
This definitely goes down as one of the dumbest "pranks" ever. What's bad is that the wife was in on it! You can definitely die from a 6 foot fall if you're ill prepared for it. I'm kind of interested in what the "mat" was that was used here, but even if they survived it how would they get out? The instant you dig at the side of the pit all the sand surrounding you comes crashing down.
As a sidenote to what has already been said. Even dugging small holes is not a good idea. If you are not aware of such a hole stepping / falling into it can result in a whole range of injuries including some which can have long term effects and reduce someones overal quality of life. i.e. don't do it.
Ok so I can't get over the whole digging a hole as a prank. Is that something I don't know about in Japan? Cause if I EVER did that to anybody (or vice-versa) I know that person would be PISSED.
wtf? that is a HUGE hole for a prank. that's the kinda crap you'd dig for a trap or something, these people must feel like idiots, probably will forever too.
Wow, talk about owned... Very unfortunate, makes me think "when will people learn? When will they learn that doing stupid shit leads to serious consequences?" lt's like stupidity is an incurable disease and we can do nothing about it; except watch people foolishly die.
This is so tragic, i can't believe how incredibly unthoughtful those "friends" of the couple are. I hope we can all learn something from this. Not that I have anything to learn though (I would never do anything THAT stupid, jesus christ).
I can understand digging a small hole that one of them could fall in and then they have a 'ahaha you're dirty now' laugh or something. But they didn't dig a hole, they dug a 10ft deep pit.
Dude, WTF? At what point would doing something like this enter your mind and why would you think it's a good idea?
And WTF was with the size of that hole? Did they have some heavy machinery to help them dig that or something? That's a lot of trouble to go through for a prank...

I figure they were trying to achieve some moe moments between the two. Bunch of fools.
It says they fell in at like 10pm? And their friends called for help at 10:45? People pulled the bodies out an hour later and they said the bodies were torso down covered in sand. Why didn't people try and get them out sooner? I don't know if that would have helped, but it sounds like they were down there for 2 hours without help. Maybe the hole filled up a lot when it collapsed, but still the tools used to dig the hole were nearby. An hour long response time for people in fatal situations is pretty ridiculous, but maybe authorities were only far away.

You'd need a spade aswell as the sand fell on top of them. To be honest, as soon as the hole caved in, there was basically no chance of them surviving.
This is really sad to me. It sounds like their friends went through a lot of effort to do something that they thought would be funny and memorable-- "hey remember when we fell into that 8 foot hole on the beach LOL" but didn't really think it through or something. You'd think they would have time to consider this shit though, I bet it took hours to dig that hole.

You do realize that according to the article the wife was also in on it and helped the friends dig the hole, and later that night proceeded to lead herself and her husband into the hole to "surprise" him. Doesn't make much sense, and admittedly I have no idea what they were trying to accomplish, but the wife is every bit as responsible for her own and her husband's death as the friends if not even more so. All of this is assuming the media has all their facts straight, which they possibly do not.

They said the tools were still nearby. Your not really supposed to help people who have fallen and could have neck injuries, but I think when your friends are head first buried in sand, thats an exception. You should do everything in your power (if your trained in CPR) to make sure that they can breath. That being said, they were without oxygen (probably) for almost an hour before rescue workers were even called, then it took another hour for them to be pulled out. They were probably dead when their friends called for help.
If I was one of them though, and saw my friends in the hole like that, you can sure as hell bet that I would be digging them out with my bare hands if I had to. I wasn't there though, so I'm not gonna judge them that harshly and say they deserve to be treated like murderers. Just a really confusing and sad story, we really need more information to make judgments.
If someone had actually watched them fall in, they probably would be alive.

The issue comes when you can't predict how the victims will fall in the whole. In theory, it is okay because they land feet first and freak out. In practice, the fall is long enough so that when they only step in with one foot, they rotate around and land head first. Idiots.

She knew about the hole, yet she get owned by it. Furthermore, since she had full knowledge of the prank, did the wife seriously expect the husband to be unscathed after such a long and unexpected fall? I know the friends are somewhat at fault here, but what surprises me more are the actions of the dude's spouse. Some birthday.
i dont think people realize that the wife, Risa, was also in on the prank because she helped dig the hole. i dont know if she meant to bring the husband there that day or they were taking a normal walk along the beach and fell into it before the intended day.

I'm not sure why people are acting like an 8 foot hole is that massive... also it was 8 foot square... seriously I don't even fucking understand how they died, it seems the friends were careful about it. How is the fact that they both died insufficient evidence for you that it was an extremely dangerous prank? Are you really this stupid or just trolling hard? You also don't seem to understand the definition of "hypocritical".
LOL nice, how do you have 2300 posts again? I assumed you were new to these forums at first but now I don't know what to think. You really think calling me names is the right thing to do?
Guess what buddy you can poke your eye out with a pencil, is that sufficient evidence that pencils are very dangerous? Jesus fucking christ it was a fucking fluke that they died considering how they made the hole wide.
Oh and by the way, every single post on an 8 page thread saying this is the "stupidest prank of all time I can't believe how retarded humanity is, I would never do something so illogical!" is pretty fucking hypocritical kid. I could argue it's more retarded and hypocritical how people are overreacting and acting like they would never pull a stunt like this, when in all likelihood the majority of this forum is no smarter than they are. I could also argue the fact that the majority of this community would rather target balance and blame it rather than make the realization that they could of played better.
The fact that you called me out saying I'm "stupid" and "don't seem to understand the definition of 'hypocritical'" reflects the self doubt of your own intelligence. Stop trying to ride your high horse of elitism.

Jumping into your guys' fight.. but dude... its fucking 8.5 feet deep, thats not a fluke, thats just fucking retarded - 1m deep would have had just the same comical effect.

I agree with this. Lots of posters on this website are pretty stupid but think they're some smart shit, whereas only a handful of people are genuinely smart.
But I'm not sure if it's a fluke they died. This prank wasn't professionally done and the consequences was clearly a disaster. The safety of this prank when they thought of it was definitely leaning towards the dangerous side.
1. How in the hell could you even dig 8.5 feet deep? I can only dig a foot deep before the sand just starts to fall back in. :p 2. Imagine how the people that dug it would feel. I can only imagine they'll feel horrible for the rest of their own lives. 3. They died from suffocation, possibly the slowest and worst way to die. This just gets worse and worse as you read on.

Dude it's 2.5 meter deep hole, it could easily kill someone and unsurprisingly it killed them both.

Exactly. And it's one thing to say, jump down two meters (still tall and potentially dangerous) but another thing altogether to fall down and not be prepared for the fall. I don't understand how anyone would put so much time into something like this and NOT realize the dangerous implications.

It doesn't take someone intelligent to understand that digging a 9 foot hole in sand for people to fall in with no one around to immediately assist them if something goes wrong is fucking stupid.
If you have time to dig a hole that big and wide in sand, you have time to think about the implications.
Why 2.5 metres? 1-1.5 metres would have been way safer. I don't get what's so funny about falling down a hole btw. Maybe the friends said "go there and fetch something" so the couple would fall down??? Such tragedy...
Didn't some kid almost die from getting stuck in a hole at the beach just like a month ago?
Honestly the idea seems stupid, but I suppose it's all easy to overlook if you count in group mentality. Oh well, if the couple shared the same IQ as their friends the world didn't lose that much, we are an over populated planet anyways, nothing too special about two people dying.
jumping down an 8 foot hole != walking into an 8 foot hole.
Yes, I could jump down an 8 foot hole and not do any damage to myself, but walking in the dark blindly into an 8 foot ledge would fuck anybody up, and if you don't think so then you are lying.
As for DYING from that fall, I don't know. Suffocation seems like an odd way to die from a fall, did the sand like fall back on top of them when they died? Maybe they both broke their necks from the fall and could not turn themselves over after they fell into the hole and died as a result? No idea
How many times have we pushed our friends into a pool? All fun and games until someone hits their head on the side of the concrete and dies/gets paralyzed. Generally, there are no safe pranks.

All fun and games until you dig a fucking mantrap for your friend
unless they put a ton of sand ontop of the mat, i dont see how this could have done anything, then again 2.5m is really fucking high, how did people dig a hole that size on a public beach with shovels...
I'll agree that not having someone there was probably the dumbest part. I guess since they suffocated it's reasonable to say that the situation was dangerous.
If anything the main point I was arguing was because I was surprised at peoples reactions, as Tasteless would say "It's ruining esports! (super serious nerd syndrome)" is what concerned me most about the mentality of this thread. Glad some people agreed with me on that.
Really can't help but try to think why anyone would find this to be a "good prank".....at best they fall and hurt themselves at worse they die a slow death to suffocation...

The thing that was so stupid about this is that they left it unattended. The actual prank itself is not as dumb and horrible as everyone is making it out, however to then leave the hole without watching it for anyone to just fall in is insane and incredibly short-sighted. What a terrible way to die.

People watch Jackass, go figure.
The difference being even the Jackass crew have medical professionals on hand in case something goes wrong and they do take some safety precautions. There's a reason they say not to try anything they do on the show at home. If it was something that got the people themselves killed it would still suck but it'd be more of a, "Meh, they were stupid enough to do it so I almost don't feel bad." but they got two innocent people killed because of their stupidity.
thats like 8 feet deep. do you know how hard it is to dig a hole that is fking 8 feet deep? The work and time you need to do something like that is a pain. and yet out of all the pranks in the world, they chose the most idiotic and hardest. The "prank" is so retarded that I feel as if this could be more than just a prank. something more evil. I refuse to believe that people would dig a 8 feet hole just to show off how brainless they are.

No, the dumbest part was digging a hole that was like 8 feet deep for someone to fall into in the first place. Anyone with an ounce of foresight could realize that even if someone doesn't get killed, taking that kind of fall unexpectedly could easily end up in a serious injury. I'm all for pranks, but this was just reckless and unnecessary and I hope the sheer stupidity of it encourages people to think twice about the potential consequences of pranks and jokes they're trying to pull.
On August 30 2011 22:29 Motivate wrote: can i just ask how did they actually die? it said they suffocated but how would that happen if it's a hole? presumably it filled in?
A tarp filled with that much sand is not something you get out from under easily
So what about the consequences of these two people, yawn arrest and jail for life. Unfortunately it is not China where you would probably get the death penalty, and I don't know how strict Japanese discipline is.

Oh my god. That is like over 20 tons of sand that they digged. How many days did they prepare this prank, and how come no officials came to stop them while in middle of this huge project on a (public?) beach.
Is that 2.5 meters square or 2.5 square meters...the difference is a factor of 2.5 (2.5 meters square is 6.25 square meters). Either way, this is both very sad and quite scary...I mean aside from the extreme scale to which they took this prank to, it almost would seem harmless enough...kinda. It's something which you might overlook the danger.
EDIT: I dont' understand some of you guys posting in this thread. It is in quite bad taste to crack jokes about when a couple did die.

How you going to dig a hole that deep and fall into it and die? Am I reading the news article wrong?
Yes, you do. But dont worry, english is not your first language so .... wait, what?
@topic: I actually think they wanted him to fall into that stupid hole on his birthday while friends are watching. They probably didnt expect him (and his wife) go there at 10 pm some days before. Of course they should have considered this.
I know this has been mentioned a bunch of times.. but a 2.5 meter hole as a prank? I would've understood if this were a prank pulled by some middle school kids but wow. Some people in this world are really just too stupid.. -_-;;
I assume they were drunk given the time of the incident. But still, pretty unfortunate to die from that, two metres isn't very far at all. Must've been pretty soft sand for them to suffocate
