I don't think there's anything ironic about viral marketing. People have been doing this for ages. I've worked on ad campaigns that start with cryptic shit posted on billboards/tv ads/etc. It's a really good way to generate interest in something. The payoff just has to be worth it, virally teasing a larger bottle of dish soap is just gonna piss people off  | ||

This kind of hype is incredibly effective until the announcement hits. If the community responds well, huge success at low cost. It can backfire horribly though.
