Just need to throw this out there for all you people thinking of getting coached in sc2. I have been trying to find the right coach, i´m a diamond/plat protoss player who has huges problems with Terrans. I´m beating up to masters zergs, holding 50/50 vs diamond protosses (never 4-gate) and then i´m losing to semi-bad terrans in platinium. So I searched on the internetzz and found Desrow to be a bit recommended.

I contacted him about coaching, and he schedualed me for a lesson at 7pm his time a couple of days ago. At 6pm we talk, he says he needs to get something to eat (takes him an hour i guess :/) and then he will come back and our lesson can start.

An hour later he comes back and asks if I want to have a lesson the day after (i was like wtf?) and my job didn´t really allow me too, since i had moved my stuff over to the next day, to have this lesson that night. Then I asked why tomorrow why not now, he said:

[19.7.2011 23:16:07] Marc-Olivier/ desRow: i dont go out often
[19.7.2011 23:16:08] Marc-Olivier/ desRow: but friends just called me
[19.7.2011 23:16:24] (MEEE): Ahh ok, i´ll just schedual with you later, have fun man

I was pretty cool about it, even though i had waited an hour for nothing and delayed work for it. I said i´d move my work back, go to work right now so I could schedual with him the day after. And he agreed to that, thanked me for understanding and left.

Then the day after, i am there at the right time, he simply doesn´t show up. I wait and wait in good faith that he might just be running a bit late, but he doesn´t show up. Another 1.5 hours down the drain.

Then now, a couple of days later he shows up, says sorry, says he had a hectic sleeping schedual. I´m pretty pissed, having been stood up twice but still willing to give his coaching a go. I ask if we could settle this with me paying for 2 hours of coaching at a decreased rate (maybe 30/35 instead of 50) because of all the bs hassle he made me go through. But no, he said he wasn´t interested and went offline.

What a douche, who doesn´t give a shit about how he treats people. Really don´t recommend him to anyone, any idiot knows that you don´t behave like this to customers, if you want to have a lot of them. Almost understand why people throw in 80 dollars an hour to have iNcontroL coach them, since he´s really nice and does it proper well. Almost thinking of going for him next after this.

---

EDIT: Me and Desrow worked things out, i´m really happy he decided to fix things, would be great if a mod would close this thread, and I think we should give him a second chance, he really showed remorse over this and has made amends. Don´t think I can ask for more then that.

Yeah that sucks. It's really unprofessional; if you (as a pro) schedule a paid coaching session with a student at a set time you are commited to attending that session. Would you expect a golf/tennis coach to behave like this? No. And if SC2 coaches can't behave in the same professional manner as those in other sports then they truly are hurting ESPORTS.
Roll with the punches.

desrow has a reputation of being an asshat around here, so i cant say im all that suprised.
Cant see why anyone would pay him to coach, there are many unknown players that offer coaching a lot cheaper and are more serious about it, look around for feedback to see which one suits you.

@Torte de Lini - I have the whole converstaion on skype with him here, and he´s simply a dick :/ It´s sad imo that he behaves like this. Very unprofessional. But whoever said Attero here above, i´ve been watching that guy so much lately, he´s so good, just didn´t know he had lessons. Obviously I need to check out minigun or Attero. At least Attero seems to have a whole different attitude then Desrow judging by his stream. Such an iNcontroL fan though

Attero is very professional, but I'm saying this with a bias viewpoint. As far as I know, he's very knowledgeable about the game, his rates are average (15 I think? You'd have to email him at sc2Attero@gmail.com) and he's been doing it since beta I believe.

Toss him an email and figure if he's right for you.

Now to find him a MLG Player pass D:

Think Attero is 50$ (http://www.gosucoaching.com/users/attero) I wanna buy like 5+ lessons, and i think 250$ is maybe a bit more then I want to dedicate to getting coached right now at this plat/diamond level i´m currently on. Although I might go for it cause I really want a good coach.

But really, really really really don´t recommend Desrow.

It's 20 to 25$ actually, I just asked lool. My bad ): I haven't asked for his rates in long time~
Anyways, let's talk about Desrow or the blog rather and not suggesting other coaches (though iNcontrol is amazing).

A little update, he did say he was sorry and gave me his replay pack for free, which is something I guess, but I think I can get pro replays pretty easily.

At least he said sorry, but his reasons were pretty self centered, mainly that he wanted to get good at the game himself so he doesn´t have time to train people he treats badly at any sort of discount...yeah..ok

Why would you want to learn Starcraft II from a proven stream sniper/cheater who clearly abused this on his way to GM league? Yes, there is such a thing as using powerful 'clever uses of ingame mechanics' to your advantage in order to maximise your winrate rather than sit back and call things cheap but it's not like any credible tournament would let you stream cheat or excessively badmouth your opponent. Yes, they'll let you 7 pool or 4-gate your opponent but not get an unfair advamtage by scouting your opponent through watching their livestream.

In fact, I think Combat is only really two steps above a drop hacker and one step above a map hacker. Why you ask? His actions are disputed in terms of ladder but are undeniably cheating in the competitive scene.

Yes, he's surprisingly good at Starcraft and knows his shit but he's not "the best.", and he surely didn't hit NA's Grandmaster league via legit tactics.

This is pretty terrible.

Unfortunately not everyone is good at being professional when it comes to dealing with clients.... that's why companies in the real world have PR managers etc.

This isn't the way most coaching is. As you said, you need to find the right coach for you. Some will be more professional than others, and at your level you don't need the highest level coach (don't need a grandmasters player to teach you how to get to masters). Don't be discouraged!

Lulz desrow, he's bad anyways, desser and combatex stomps his ass everytime till they lost interest in him and start harrasing destiny. if you want free practice/lessons I will help you out, come to channel smi on b.net look for me, if i'm around I will play with you, never buy any lessons, it's pretty useless if you are already in diamond.

Unfortunately.... yes.

His Brood War videos don't seem too bad, and some people have apparently improved through watching his guides, and he didn't seem too bad until this whole badmouthed win begging/stream cheating side of him emerged.

However, I'm disappointed that the guides he put out for Starcraft 2 are pretty much nonexistent and are at a time when SC2 was in beta and not even the pros knew the best builds to use. That's when attempting shit like 1 Gate Colossus drops which you see in the following video I've linked would have actually worked.

After seeing his persona back in BW (Based on his past YT videos) before his ban from TL, it makes me wonder what the fuck happened to his behaviour to turn him into the stream cheating crap-talker he is now.

EDIT: I didn't exactly want to turn this thread from a discussion about Desrow's douchiness into a discussion about CombatEX. I was merely replying to somebody's message about learning from Combat, and this as a reply to somebody linking the video announcing his glorious (if you can put it that way) return to tutorial videos.

lol desrow

this guy is a self marketing whore. he has paid for two sponsored threads and also got perm banned (but then unbanned) for posting multiple 1 liner threads with a link to his blog.

i was actually completely confounded as to why this guy is still featured on the stream list. its literally the only thing he has going for him and the only reason he gets any sort of attention because hes definitely not a good player

Don't get me wrong, I think he's a decent player but damn, he needs to learn some fucking forum etiquette before offering coaching lessons or advertising his stream/blog on TL...

At least that's based on what the OP and others initially said.

This sucks, I had a similar situation but got it resolved. I agree that not all coaches display the professionalism customers expect.

Just try to get a refund I guess and find someone else who is a better coach (and player) than desrow

Actually if he made a mistake about the schedulling of a lesson, u got a point there.
I see a lot of people giving him reviews without knowing what kind of coach is he.
at the end everybody jumps here to said he is a bad coach but nobody actually took a lesson from him.

Lol, Slaughtah, I can post the whole chat log here, but that´s just something you don´t do.

I showed him respect, was cool with wasting 40 mins for nothing, then wasting 1.5 hours more the next day, well, that would make most of us unhappy with the service we got.

Then he doesn´t even want to make things right by giving me a little discount, because it´s simply a principle not to pay fully for something when it´s broken or the store/service provider has fucked you over hard. I´m simply not going to bend over for him after he fucked me over twice and pay up top for the service. A sorry means just about nothing when he ain´t even willing to maybe give me a 30% off on his lessons, even if i´m still buying 2 hours from him (not just 1). I felt I was giving him a pretty good deal by still wanting to buy from him.

That´s pretty simple. Now I was very mannered, but when he saw that there was a TL thread he became angry, raging at me instead of just learning his lesson and not doing the same mistake again.

A "i´m not interested - sorry" into "offline" as a reply to me, is pretty much bad. And then going and being angry at me for his own mistakes, makes him look even less professional.

He streams his lessons as far as I know. I'm sure the majority of people that watch his stream know what his coaching is like.

Can you judge his professionalism from one potential customer? Lets find out.

I mean, he didn't call me "fucking retarded," i just noticed it, and thought it was a little hypersensitive of him, when someone asked him why he didn't build an extra cannon.

All i was saying was my opinion of him, which is that he was abrasive and hot headed.

That's it.

Hey hey hey. I am not a coach on gosucoaching. Desrow has his moments when he's in a bad mood but other than that he's usually a nice guy. In terms of myself, I coach at 20$/hr at the moment and I respect nony, just disagree with a lot of his strategies. ^^

He's not a nice guy, so far from it, a nice guy would respect other people, he shows no respect to other sc2 vets, he use every chance he have to try to improve his own image at the expense of others.
all his replay packs he ever posted doesn't contain any games of him getting his ass raped by the same players he brags about beating. Just because those players have a reputation to protect and doesn't wanna sink to desrow's level, I on the other hand just another nobody, I don't have that restriction, and I will bash desrow not for all other sc2 vets he has wronged, i'm just doing this for my own entertainment.

For what it's worth Incontrol while having a pretty full schedule will probably do some pretty good coaching with you.

He always does a good consistant job with helpful advice.

What good does it the wronged student to know that desrow supposedly is "usually a nice guy"? Certain kinds of behavior are simply inexcusable.

I have to admit not showing up on two consecutive scheduled coaching sessions is very unprofessional. This rarely happens and if it does happens I contact my student in advance if there is a tournament or if I am unable to attend.I had a hectic schedule last week and ended up not showing up on day 2.

I agree that the OP should have been compensated for my mistakes but I was not interested in bargaining at that time. I wanted to focus on practice and it impaired my judgement. I realize now I was being foolish for not even considering to offer him a deal and I should of at least thought about it before answering him.

n0btozz Feel free to message me anytime on Skype and I will gladly schedule you in for 2 free hours of coaching. Once again, sorry for the troubles.

With all due respect, Torte is right. Merely mentioning it is advertising that he doesn't deserve. Sorry for my comment earlier, I legitimately thought it was in reference to his BW videos. Enough talking about it though XD

Appology accepted man, a "bigger man" for making one. Most people would not have admitted they treated someone wrong on the internet and just have said "fuck him", and mistakes can happen.

Really shows character from desrow, I guess I was wrong about him being some mega douche, at least this is not something a mega douche would have done Will do and really happy to see it ending like this.

The elusive diamond/plat league, where only bloggers reside...

Glad to see desrow post though. I don't really follow SC2 that much, but I'm glad he made an effort to settle things, even if it started very badly.

Stick with it OP. Desrow is worth it, after all he did beat Idra twice.

Once in a macro game: http://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/viewblog.php?topic_id=240438
and once a cheese game: http://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/viewblog.php?topic_id=234311

That means he's mastered a multitude of styles, and uses them effectively to take down pros such as Idra. Definitely pursue his coaching. Additionally I've heard he's quite humble and rarely talks badly about other people. If you need a light hearted coach that has mastered multiple styles to take down one of the best players in the scene, Desrow is for you!

I got temp banned from his stream earlier today because I said he should have done something different (will not go into details) during his game against Tgun. I was a little sad of that reaction because I was polite in the way I said it and it wasn't meant to be mean to him... I don't know if it was him or one of his mods but I think I found the cause of that reaction... There are A LOT of trolls on his stream, which can be a source of stress. Maybe he just has a hard time dealing with that. All I know is that he's a great guy.

About this topic: He realized his mistake, he offered 2hrs of free coaching to the guy so I guess it's fine now.

On the risk of sounding a bit mildly aggrevated, your behaviour just baffles me. You now after a blog has been made came in and gave the reasoning. After a couple of pages has been posted about people midly irritated at you and telling their reasoning for not liking you nor what've done to players as well. Then you feel like offering 2 lessons for free ?

You should've offered those lessons to the poor fella straight out of the gate. Not after seeing how this even further just hurt your image. Not just mind boggeling that someone of your stature or viewed stature act towards poeple. With or without the reasoning you gave.

OP please don't do this. If he doesn't offer you a free hour and full refund, he doesn't care about your business and doesn't deserve it. There are so many other good protoss players out there that actually win tournaments and play at a competitive level. With all the rumors (which having known desrow personally for quite a while I am 99% sure they are all true) flying around there's no reason to associate yourself with him. Do yourself a favor and message somebody else.

/endrant.

Desrow... Manner up yo. You've been around the sc scene for a bit now and you've yet to mature as a person. You've come a long way as a player from when you first started but your people skills have always been lacking. Try and use better judgement.
Why?

Yeah that sucks. It's really unprofessional; if you (as a pro) schedule a paid coaching session with a student at a set time you are commited to attending that session. Dude, I hope your just trolling, but in case your not, please please please stop it with the, "it's killing/hurting esports", so annoying

Being a coach is like being a teacher, raw skills at the subject don't cut it.

Desrow is known for a lot of controversy, i find it weird he's stream is still in still featured.
