So I'm surprised that he put up a good fight. Game 3 was so fucking good. Really enjoyed the games today. Light never won a best-of-series against a protoss in the latter stages (round of eight and above) of major individual leagues during his professional career. His biggest triumph versus the protoss race in a best-of-series setting would either be his 2-1 victory versus Bisu in the round of 16 of WCG Korea 2007, or his 2-1 victory versus JangBi in the round of 28 of Incruit OGN StarLeague. Obviously he won more, but these would be the ones he would be most proud of I'd imagine.

He's certainly not bad mechanically, but I guess maybe he just doesn't understand the matchup as well as say, TvZ? Anyone have any ideas. I don't even think it has necessarily to do with the fact that he utterly lacks the fundamental flow of the match-up, since his protoss-versus-terran abilities are top level for an offrace (he has beaten Flash's terran with it before). From a pure theoretical point of view, the way he talks makes me feel like he has encyclopedic knowledge of Brood War in general. I have the feeling that Light is just not a natural competitor in general. This is a quality that is often downplayed, but it is an essential asset to have since you are competing at a Brood War tournament, not showing off your Brood War capabilities to an audience in a laid-back vacuum setting, totally free from consequences. It is true that Light does have a better skills in the other match-ups, but his utter lack of competitive results in this specific match-up has more to do with his flaws as a competitor, than any crippling flaws as a gamer in my personal opinion. Light, after losing his series, lamented the fact that he lost in such a disappointing manner, not being able to show the kind of skills he displayed during practice. Even during his days as a professional, he wasn't that bad during practice. Bisu once said on stream that when he was having his best ProLeague performance of his career, he had a joint-practice session with MBC Game HERO, and he went undefeated against the entire terran roster of that team, excluding Light, who managed to defeat him. Assuming that it is the Shinhan 2010/2011 ProLeague season Bisu is talking about (where he got the MVP as well as the most number of individual victories), Light actually had a sub-50% win rate versus the protoss race that season. Sea had a win rate that was closer to 60%. From a pure gaming point of view, Light may have been the better player, but it essentially doesn't matter from a competitive stand point if he couldn't bring the results.

The circuit breaker game is a perfect example. At one point he had 4 tanks killing the 3 o'clock nexus and he ran his vultures in to kill the probes instead of protecting his tanks and lost his whole army. Later on they were 4 base vs 4 base which is very good for Terran, Rain attacks the 6 o'clock base with his whole army and Light brings units too slowly and doesn't manage to save the nexus. He should have just attacked Rain's 3rd and 4th and he would have a very strong chance to close out the game but he loses his base, cedes map control and lets Rain get his 5th up. These were just some examples of bad decision making, he's mechanically solid but until he really learns the matchup I don't see him performing well vs Protoss.
