So, no surprises here - Rain doing Flash a favor, screwing with both Snow and Shuttle and possibly eliminating JD from the tournament. So, I would go out on a limb and make the following predictions before the first matches are announced: A: Rain 1st/Sharp 2nd B: Effort 1st/Snow 2nd C: Last 1st/Best 2nd D: Flash 1st/Light 2nd

The smarter move would have been Best <-> Action, making it much tougher for Flash, Soulkey, Effort and Best to advance, and making it much easier for Mini, Shuttle and Snow.

He gave Flash an extremely easy group, made it so that Shuttle and Snow would almost certainly lose (which are both pretty free wins for Rain) and he Soulkey and Effort are pretty guaranteed to make it through, both of which he'll struggle against. The smarter move would have been Best <-> Action, making it much tougher for Flash, Soulkey, Effort and Best to advance, and making it much easier for Mini, Shuttle and Snow. Rain assumes himself (rightly so) to top his group. That leaves three potential second-place finishers to play against him, correct? Out of group B nothing really changes; Light is of no interest to Rain as a potential opponent, but Snow (I disagree with you here, he's his best PvP opposition, though Rain is still favored) and Effort would probably advance, both of whom he would like to avoid. I'm not really underestimating Shuttle, he beat Effort last year, but odds are against him. In group D things might have been pretty volatile with three zergs - he's fine against Action, I presume, but JD and SK are both to be avoided; moreover, with SK in that group, Flash MIGHT actually advance second and Rain does not want that. So he puts a TvZ specialist in place of SK, making the group more predictable in favour of the terran players and putting 3 out of the 4 potential opponents in group B, so that more of them are likely to be eliminated. Group C has two protosses and Rain has their number, he destroyed Best 3:0 in KSL and will probably kill Mini, so he has no reason to make it tougher on them. Putting Action in that group would favor Last immensely and change nothing for Mini. So, Rain makes it less likely for Flash to advance second and more likely for JD, Snow, Effort and SK to be eliminated. These 5 players are possibly his toughest opposition.

Probably made Soulkey's day too. [edit] I didn't predict that, but I did have a sense that allowing Rain to get Sea in his group without a swap was going to be bad. Shuttle picking Light over Sea allowed Rain the luxury of doing what he did.

The standout strategists were probably Mini and Shine. Not only did they avoid picking Sea, but they smartly picked Best - strong enough to dodge a swap by Rain, but still beatable. Whereas Snow and Shuttle made a mistake picking Light - a ripe target for a swap. Also, Shuttle was trying a bit too hard to have it 'easy' (one point suggesting to Rain to swap Last with him), which effectively screws his original group-mates. Part of Rain's plan may be to balance the groups, and not let any group have an easy ride (one point he remarked that he wasn't liking how Group B was having their way). So the optimal play is NOT to form an easy group, to avoid Rain's swap. The swap power may be imba, but overall affects the dynamics of the selections in an interesting way.

I am really excited about the next round and I am rooting so hard for Best. And intersting, the Best vs. July OSL final was when I started following the broodwar scene, I had watched a few games here and there before but ever since then I have watched every major tournament. So, Best has a special place for me even though I was a Stork fan in the Kespa days. And Jaedong, is, well, Jaedong... What maps will be played in the Ro 16 btw?

Group B: EffOrt/Soulkey. I think that EffOrt is going to sneak out of the group first by upsetting SK in G1, and otherwise, we both saw Snow's and Shuttle's PvZ in the KSL. While Snow managed to get up 2-0 vs JD, he choked and also didn't look good in standard games which EffOrt and SK both exceed in. Shuttle's PvZ is also just trash. Easy picks again. Group C: BeSt/Last. This was a weird group to pick because based upon how the first games go, things could be very interesting. I think any of these players could advance, but I'm going with BeSt and Last. I think BeSt will beat Last and Shine will beat Mini, then BeSt will upset Shine and Last will advance after that. It's a tough group to call. Group D: FlaSh/Jaedong. Man, everyone saying Light is gonna beat Jaedong is too clouded by the fact that Jaedong got 4-0d by Last. He beat Light in their KSL finals group, and Jaedong is only getting better right now. Easily the Group of Death imo, Action has also looked great. FlaSh > JD, Light > Action, JD > Action, FlaSh > Light, JD > Light. Jaedong over Light, screw all the naysayers. Also makes me sad that Action is probably getting eliminated here :/
