Iris built his academy and comsats much later than Midas, and Midas seemed to me to be passive and overly protective of his 3 o'clock expo early on because he was essentially blind. Iris expoed to his min only while his marines were containing Midas and denying scouting, and then once he took the 9 o'clock island to match Midas's island he had the definite economic advantage.
