For those of you new to Broodwar!

Why this map pool?

Fighting Spirit: This map has been a staple of the multiplayer realm since 2009. Used in the Kespa professional map pool from 2009 to 2010 it has seen action in 19 different leagues. It's no question when it comes to balance it is the best, as the worst match up is ZvP which has a 53.4% win rate in favor of zerg. Over taking python and other notable maps, Fighting Spirit has become the standard for any multiplayer game on ICCUP.

Neo Electric Circuit and Neo Jade find themselves being played in the qualifiers as they are two of the most current maps played in the Late Kespa premier leagues. These maps show the perfect circle of life in BW. T>Z>P>T However below I'll show you what favors whom in detail.

Neo Electric Circuit: Below you can see Terran players generally have had the most success on this map and have a great advantage vZ. Protoss should also do there best to avoid this map vZ.
TvZ: 22-9 (71%)
ZvP: 15-7 (68.2%)
PvT: 7-5 (58.3%)

Neo Jade : Below you can see Protoss has the advantage here in the matchups while Terran is less favored. This is also a map zerg would prefer to see if they are playing a Terran.
TvZ: 2-2 (50%)
ZvP: 5-6 (45.5%)
PvT: 10-7 (58.8%)

Where can I learn more about strategy of the game?
Whether new or a veteran Chill's Recommended Threads in the Brood War Strategy section can give you tons of information.

Where can I watch VODS of Brood War?
The Small Vod Thread is a great resource on how to find the latest pro games on these maps. It also is a great place to add new VODs from Brood Wars finest foriegn tournaments if you find yourself with time to add any there.

Also, Sayle's youtube channel is full of VODS from our most recent foreign tournaments

Where can I find people that actively play Brood War?

This whole tournament is being played through an active server called ICCUP. While there are other servers, such as FISH, this is the one the has had the best relationship with TL.

About iCCup:
The Internation Cyber Cup also referred to as iCCup, was first launched in the year 2007. Beginning and majoring with StarCraft, iCCup continued to grow throughout the years. Eventually iCCup became so big that expansion into other areas of eSports was necessary. Thus the addition of Counter-Strike, DOTA, and WarCraft.

With the ever growing popularity of iCCup eventually it began to attract the Korean population, more so the Korean Progamers. In return, even more foreign players began to play on iCCup with the hopes of being matched up against a Progamer.

With around 3 to 4 seasons per year, a ton of money prize tournaments, Clan Leagues, and much more, iCCup became a huge success and what you see today is the result of the hard work put in by every single person that is involved in someway with iCCup.

Regards,
iCCup Crew

Getting involved with Brood War on iCCup is great because it will prevent map hackers and give you the most friendly environment on earth. Learn how to start playing Starcraft on iCCup right now! Following this link will give you the proper programs and a map pack to all the maps that are being played today.

Yes, you can play. Only the winner can't play. So you can try to get 1st place so you can choose your own group

EDIT: After the discussion with the organizers we have decided it would be in best interest for other players to not allow 2nd place finishers to play qualifiers again since they're already qualified. This way the remaining players can't get knocked out of the tournament by already qualified players.

and you should correct that registered ID should same appear in bracket (i registered as LRM)Pike and was in bracket as Pike etc.)
not mention about players who register at one ID and play at other, that's sick >_<

The system accounts for that, it will show you TL id in the bracket but your opponents can see you BNet name in the tournament system (shows up in top left near profile settings).

edit: in the next ones we can do check in links in the OP and top bar of TL.

I'm sorry to all my fans for not making it past Ro64, my opponent Bakuryu played honourably and even though I had more drones than him he still managed to take the win by a hair's width. I will try my best to show good games for my fans in the next qualifier I play in.

Should have 5 pooled.

5 pool ZvZ sucks though. 9/9/9 all the way.

I 4pooled greenelve and won but I didn't want to do the same vs baku because some retard in the chat beforehand was saying "HEY BIRDIE CHEESE HIM HARD" and I said I was going to play straight up or else hydra zvz and he said "THAT'S UNUSUAL FOR YOU" so I couldn't cheese after that ;(

Omg I am so excited now! Damn this is giving me nerd chills, the game is so exciting even when not that much is going on for me haha.

And most people can't do too much harass with corsairs late-game, too much multitasking to do, shouldn't be game changing.

Infernal has pretty won, can't really do anything at this point, analysis is pretty off. Infernal is just playing super safe. 5 base vs 6 base favors protoss so badly. Infernal has a way better army and never in any danger D;

Viewership steadily climbing. I'm naively hopeful for the future of BW... and have been just because of the quality of the game. There are exclusive SC2 players that will migrate to BW... the question is just how many.

man these games are just awesome. the funny thing is that bw is just so ridiculously good that games like the infernal vs trutacz are commonplace. and baku vs terror is awesome too, i think baku has it tho.

Gotta give a big thank you to Sayle! I started with SC2 and only recently started watching and playing BW. His comments on how the matchups work and flow are incredibly helpful to a noob like me, for example his comments just now on the TvZ tech race and how the lategame should and does work. I'm sure it's obvious to BW veterans but having looked around for vods, it's rare to find English commentary that explains the flow of the game so well and it's a big help!

yea it's really awesome. I'm about as much of a bw veteran as you can possibly get, but well, we never enjoyed regular english commentary back in the day. it's funny how sc2 basically first kills the game, but then proceeds to provide the infrastructure and viewership numbers to revitalize it.

It's a style that used to be really popular, called SK Terran. You focus on highly aggressive play with very mobile MnM armies, and spend all your gas on getting a huge vessel cloud which is used to take down the zergs gas heavy units (ultras, defilers, lurkers) with irradiates.

they're different styles with different strenghts and weaknesses. mainly, it's a tradeoff between mobility and firepower - pure mm vessel can move around freely, while if you're adding tanks, you basically need to move slowlier and force zerg to engage your army. which style is stronger is largely map dependant; if you are playing a map where you (as terran) can hold off some significant pathways and where expansions are bunched together, including tanks into your army is great. if, however, the map is more open and expansions are more spread out, tanks become less efficient in a fight, easier to avoid for the zerg army, and the decreased mobility can end up killing you.

if you lose a battle with mm&vessel, you normally manage to retreat with half your army still intact. losing a battle with tanks, means your entire army dies.

GG, that was sick. Also, even though I'm protoss I also enjoy playing the least popular race so I've been playing lots of terran lately. Maybe some of the new ppl to the scene will react the same way.

Air weapons!!???

Is this focusing on corsairs for a harassment based strategy or an eventual transition to carriers, and indicative of a air tech switch in the mid-late game?

can we please auto ban the phrase "people still play this game?" from the stream chat for the next qualifier casts? and i have yet to see a(n) <insert sc2 unit here> joke that's actually funny, they mostly just derail the chat for a few minutes. no big deal, but kind of annoying after a hundred times

I want to see more aggressive counter dropping from the zerg, right now P is dictating momentum and with abundance of overlords and drops already available, no reason not to start taking the game back where you want to.

Why doesn't anyone take the center expo? It seems like it has 2x minerals.

And Z has total map control except for shuttles and they're picking off outlying stuff, not heading face into the center of the map.

Not a surprise, of course, I didn't mean it was some kind of very bold or insightful prediction, standard.
Actually, both of them in the end were close to not making it, good games by Julia and dRaW.

since Liquipedia isn't updated yet, and I would rather not touch it in fear of breaking it completely, here are the top 12 points standing thus far (using the IDs on the Bracket, not ICCup IDs):

1. Terrorterran (106)
1. dRaW (106)
3. 13Julia (65)
4. vOdToasT (62)

Here's a complete list. I'm not sure what to do with players like Baku, who got points in Qualifier 1 and qualified in Qualifier 2.

thnx

I know I reply to this thread too often but there is an obvious pattern to the tournament winners so far. The zerg who beats me 2-1 will win the whole qualifier without dropping a set to any other opponent.

unrelated, any of the already qualified players want to help me train for the next quals? msg me @ skype or TL!

Actually I'm surprised that a lot of good players who used to be active not that long ago are not here.
Sneazel, Kashu, Pro7ect, Ace, Koget, Heme, DeSka, Bishop, Flaf, Oya, Patron, Choosy, Karate, dsaqwe, Kolll, Trix, etc

Ace played in this qual at least(went out against NeMu). Pro7ect has gone SC2. dsaqwe have been pretty active, don't know why he hasn't played.

to be fair, its probably due to the fact that it is featured on Twitch's front page

Hello everyone! Guys, can you explain me few things please. I totally do not understand your community.
Why TLS is SO OMG POPULAR? Why it is more popular then ISL? What is the REAL reason? Prize pool is lower, organization is rather strange ( for example a day before yesterday ppl had to choose between TLS and NW ). What is the reason? I guess one reason is that this tour is organized by admins of tl? But what this gives to this event? Why tons of bad players or even sc2 players come to play this event, and they NEVER come to play ISL or gambit cup or any event, which was organized previously on tl.net by not admins.

This is not a kind of any trolling, we (me and my russian friends) just cant understand your community.

And the last and most important reason, how you managed to get Sayle to this?

Thank you.

I'd say its a combination of a low barrier to entry, good promotion, fantastic production and the teamliquid effect that have helped with such a great opening weekend.

The overall hype connected to the event is much bigger, mainly due to the fact that it's on the twitch.tv and tl frontpage. Also the production rocks. Did I mention the hype?
Overall i think it's a really good thing for foreign bw to see this work out so well. I'm really hoping on the "flagship effect" which will (hopefully) attract more people to other BW events like the next ISL (wehenever this will take place).

yea it's all about the TL frontpage hype.

what's interesting is whether this is gonna have a snowball effect and contribute to increasing viewer numbers for all the other ongoing bw tournaments - so many people got to see how amazingly cool bw can be, maybe they'll keep watching.

yO, thx for reply. Ok, i understand. All this is great and good, hope ppl will play more BW, cause BW obv much better then childishSC2.

But anyways, i want to say to someguy/someguys, who made all this hype on front page - what a shame, that you did not make same for previous BW events.

Ok, see you all in next qualifier.

Plumbum i think it's because they are using the TL stream so all the Sc2 players watch the stream to see what's going on, why they are casting BW instead of Sc2, and they keep watching because it's so much fun. i think that 3/4 of the viewers were actually Sc2 guys, or ex BW players. if you check the chat, there is always few people (us) the BW players commentating what's going on. but it's good, they will see how good and entertaining BW is. and hopefully. this will help our community a lot.

I heard it was featured on the front page of twitch, so that would explain one part of it, the other being that it's featured on TL and it's TL's own tournament.

i would say at least half of the viewers were sc2 guys who randomly jumped into tls channel. and then leaving the page on while doing something else. all foreign active bwers who know bw tours (like gc nw and isl)and watch them regularly are about 300 ppl on average(maybe isl finals have more 1000 viewers). so we have to admit the fact that sc2 is much more popular. however this is a good opportunity to show how bw awesome is, how fun to watch, and how skillful the players are. thx to tls.

A lot of SC2 players started off playing BroodWar. It's pretty reasonable to presume that many former BroodWar players tuned in because they wanted to see a big BroodWar tournament. There's been a huge drought of BroodWar since TSL2, and now it's like the rain is coming down, and all those underground roots are sprouting back up.

Here's my advise, your 3 hatch hydra will fail against draw. And your long runbys will be stopped. He has the sickest wall offs. I just finished watching your matches draw and wish you could have given bisu a pep talk before his last osl vs roro.

pike 1-0, I lost a game I should have won on La Mancha in the vTv invitational. Interestingly enough I have never practice gamed or laddered pike once.

Pike vs draw dreammatch:

Pike: "These lurkers have been burrowed here for the past 15 minutes, but now is finaly the time to move in and pull off the perfect flank!"

Draw: "kind of hard to flank my army when I'm recalling it into your base bro."

Pike: "...fuck"

That's why it's the DREAMMATCH. Draw makes some DTS to do invis vs invis shenanigans at his bace, while we realize that the sim-city at your bace compleatly works in reverse.

But unfortunently you are a zerg player and therefor duty-bound to hydra bust so we won't see any of this
