Day of Upsets

Canata, "I'm so thankful to s2"
"It felt like a rehearsal"

- You are now in a 1:0 lead with (Z)Jaedong as your opponent
▲ I don’t want to place too much meaning on today’s win. I will instead focus on the remaining games coming up next week. I do feel happy that I was able to win a game in front of so many spectators. It felt like a rehearsal.

- Though you say you don’t place too much importance on today’s win, that doesn’t mean you would’ve been okay with losing today's game does it?
▲ I wasn’t thinking it would be okay to lose. It’s just that, even if I won, I knew next week I could easily lose 3 sets in a row. So I wanted to focus not so much on the win but on the experience I gained from the game.

- Putting priority on the first game of this series, did you purposely prepare an aggressive early game build?
▲ Though the game ended, I felt I hadn’t even started. I wanted to show a lot more so I prepared a lot but I’m disappointed I wasn’t able to showcase any of it. Because I will be playing a lot more games next week, I will practice even more precisely and show grander games.

- It seems you’ve recently reached your second peak of gameplay – what do you think of this?
▲ I don’t think my first “peak” was much of a peak at all. I just want to think that this is the first “peak” I’m entering. However, because I’m still playing in Ro8’s of both leagues, it’s a bit awkward to use the word “peak”. I think that word will only be appropriate once I reach higher rounds. It’s not the right time yet.

- How do you plan on preparing for the rest of the games between you and Jaedong?
▲ Tomorrow I have a team kill to complete (t/n: his OSL match against Fantasy). Only after I apply my focus there and take care of that will I be able to start planning my MSL Ro8. As of now I don’t have any particular plans. Though I thought a lot about it during my break period, I haven’t come up with a definite course of action yet.

- It’s your first time playing a first set separate from the rest of a BoX – how do you feel about it?
▲ If I had played all 5 sets today, because I won the first set, I could’ve been at an advantage. I’m a bit disappointed because I feel by next week my rhythm will have faded but honestly, because I haven’t ever really played a first set of a BoX, playing it separately from the rest of the series doesn’t make a big difference for me.

- Last words you want to say?
▲ (Z)s2 helped me out so much I’m sure he was sick of it. T1’s zerg hope lies in s2. He really is an impressive and very kind dongseng (t/n: word for younger person). I just held onto s2 for practice but he never acted as though he were suffering and tirelessly helped me so I’m very thankful. I hope he will also help me for next week.

Original Korean Interview: Canata

Calm, "I still have 2 more games to win"
"After Proleague, I haven't been able to sleep properly"

- You’re leading 1:0 with (Z)EffOrt as your opponent.
▲ I still have to win 2 more times. Because of this, I don’t place too much importance on today’s win.

- It’s your first time playing a first set of a BoX separate from the rest of the series – how does it feel?
▲ It sort of felt like a single match. But it’s okay. I think all setups are fine. I don’t really have a preference.

- Because it’s your vacation time, it probably wasn’t easy to practice.
▲ Though it’s vacation break, zerg players helped me. (Z)by.hero and (Z)Modesty helped me. Also, (Z)ZerO, (Z)GoRush, (Z)Action, and (Z)Yarnc all helped me. I spent all day looking for practice partners and practiced.

- How was today’s game?
▲ My opponent used a build I expected him to. Just as I hoped, I gathered mutas quickly.

- How do you plan on preparing for your next couple of games?
▲ I have to prepare for 4 possible games next. I’ll have to prepare mindgames, and in doing so I will have to put a lot more thought into it. I will win by using a build that will be better than today’s.

- We’re curious as ot how you’ve been spending your time after Proleague~
▲ When I think about those two ace matches I lost, even now I can’t sleep properly. During my time as a progamer, I think those losses were my greatest ones. In order not to repeat the same mistakes again, I’m doing a lot of self reflection these days.

- Last words you want to say?
▲ I keep feeling sorry to the fans who always cheered for our team, the staff, my teammates, and coaching staff. In the future, I will work harder so that I never make the same mistakes again.

Original Korean Interview: Calm

Iris, "I will end it early"
"2 fac - it is key to use it at the appropriate moment"

- You won the first match against (P)Bisu
▲ I believe the first match of a Bo5 is very important. I prepared with the mindset that losing today would put me in a difficult situation. I’m relieved that the result was good.

- Things didn’t seem so good for you at first.
▲ Today also, the early game played out strangely. I wondered to myself why it was playing out that way. I even thought at one point I wouldn’t be able to take the game.

- When you pushed out, you must have wondered whether it would be successful or not.
▲ Whether or not it would be successful is something I pondered about over a 100 times before I arrived at the stadium. In the game, having already pushed out, I thought to myself that I shouldn’t get distracted and just focused on my attack.

- It seems Bisu didn’t anticipate your 2 fac attack.
▲ I think he did predict I would go 2 fac to a certain point. However, Bisu’s build was not a build to counter 2 fac (laughs).

- Is there a know-how to Iris’s 2 fac rush?
▲ Rather than a know-how, a 2 fac rush is similar to the lottery. You use a 2 fac build when you expect your opponent to expand to their nat. You have to be sure about this. The key part is anticipating what your opponent is going to do.

- It was your first time playing the first set of a BoX separate from the rest of the series – how was it?
▲ If I had lost, I think I could’ve gained a very negative mentality. But since I won, I believe I’ve gained leeway and am in the advantage mentally as well. I think winning the 1st set will always be nice, and losing the 1st set will always suck.

- How do you plan on preparing for the rest of your games?
▲ This is my own method but if I beat the opponent in the early game, whether it be one of the 6 dragons or a B-team protoss of my team, it doesn’t matter. Therefore, I will end it in the early game.

- Last words you want to say?
▲ I am practicing very hard. Because I’ve been winning lately, I think I will be able to practice with a more enthusiastic mindset. For GOMTV, I will have to play (Z)EffOrt, and in our team zerg players do well even if they don’t practice. However, because I play like crap if I don’t practice, team kills always leave me feeling like I’m losing more than I’m gaining. Matches are a progamer’s pride. I will prepare hard.

Original Korean Interview: Iris

Kwanro, "At every free moment, I will slowly and perfectly prepare for the next few sets"
"I should have microed better and almost lost because of it"

- Your feelings on winning the 1st set?
▲ I’m happy at the sole fact that I won. Though I haven’t reached the Ro4 yet, right now I’m just happy that I won the first set.

- There was a moment of danger towards the end.
▲ I should have microed better and almost lost because of it. Luckily, I was able to get some spores up to secure my win. If my spore colonies hadn’t finished, I would have probably lost.

- During your moment of danger, we’re curious as to how many minerals you had.
▲ At that moment I had a lot of minerals. I had about 300~400 minerals and that’s why I was able to build spore colonies. Because I was in such a rushed state, I only built spores in my nat (laughs).

- (Z)ZerO is known for having good zvz
▲ He seems like a very skilled player. Among today’s zergs, his zvz is very good. However, focusing on things like that doesn’t do any good for me. I just think if I play the game according to my own style, good results will come out.

- (Z)EffOrt also played a zerg in this Ro8 – did you practice together?
▲ Whenever time was available, we practiced together. We weren’t able to practice that much because of the playoffs, but whenever practice for playoffs finished, we practiced on each others’ respective maps. We’re probably going to practice together in our remaining matches as well.

- You were probably hoping both you and EffOrt could score wins today.
▲ Though it would’ve been nice if we both won today, I only played one set today and because there are still 4 sets left, I just thought of today’s game comfortably. I’m sure EffOrt felt the same way. But still, it would’ve been nice if we both won.

- Your mindset for the remaining games?
▲ From now on, at every free moment I have, I believe I will have to slowly and perfectly prepare for the next few sets. This is because I have a lot of free time that I need to manage.

- Last words you want to say?
▲ This week, the playoff game against Samsung Khan is coming up soon. I hope that the players won’t tire out and will work hard so that we can advance in the playoffs.

Wow these interviews were extraordinarily fast. Nice work smix.

s2? That name was tossed around a bit last year, but he never really got any momentum. Kind of surprising to hear his name again.

Day of upsets is right. With the exception of zero vs kwanro, since their zvz are both really not tip top, the better player lost their game.
3 CJ players in the ro8 makes me happy though ^^

Thanks for the translations Smix. Things should be pretty awkward between Effort and Iris for practice since they both play their bo5 the last day of the samsung playoffs, so it should be awkward whether they win or lose. I really hope JD + Zero make it out though from these players, he rest I dont really care who wins or loses.

I'm gonna guess here, because I don't know Korean, but with matches he probably means bo3/bo5 series?

Effort has to practice for a lot more matches than most players. He can expect to play 2 games in Proleague Playoffs, a Bo5 in Gom, and a Bo5 in MSL. To make things worse, he isn't even practicing for the same matchup.

Wow, Jaedong lost the first game against Canata, honestly can't believe it. But, I believe in Jaedong, Effort, and Bisu and hopefully, they win the rest of the games.

That's saying a bit much considering the game. If Canata 3-0's Jaedong, then maybe you can say that.

Thanks for this Smix.

Personally, I can't believe the results but congrats to the winners. 2 out of 3 CJ's winning , good enough for me. The Kwanro/Zero game was one of the best ZvZ's I've seen in a while. Just when I thought ZvZ was starting to get boring again that game happens. I kind of wish they played the entire BO5 at once but I do admit this will allow the players that lost to prepare more to make even better games hopefully.
Nothing to it but to do it.

It's more than just this game. Canata has been looking positively frightening this past month. Who knew that the perpetually boring defense terran would metamorphosize into an aggressive, interesting terran that has a chance to make it to the round of 4 and maybe even farther?

Day of Upsets ? What are you talking about, I totally expected Canata to beat Jaedong!

I also expected Iris to take 1-2 games of Bisu because of his aggreive style, Bisu always hade some problems with him. Next two MSL days will be really really awesome!

Thanks for the translations btw
