Ya what's with translators leavin after gettin stars? I would love to translate if I knew a lick of Korean lol but unfortunately my knowledge only extends to recognition of players names and like a few letters from those names haha.

Don't worry guys, I won't die out so soon. Probably will stop translating for a while once I start getting busy preparing for my GCE A levels, which is next year

I don't know... I was born Korean so I can't say whether it's difficult to pick up Korean or not. But I assure you, it is more difficult than Japanese because Korean has more letters (actually, if you count both Japanese's writing systems, Hiragana and Katagana, then I think Japanese has more letters) which are mostly different. Also, each word is made up from 2 ~ 6 letters, so it's very hard to learn.

Chinese sucks though, the words are so damn difficult to remember.

Haha.. Japanese uses over 2000 kanji (chinese characters), each of which may have 2 or more different readings.. Korean may be tough but it's the writing system that gives it a big leg up for learning compared to Japanese or Chinese.

There was a blog called Korean Vs Japanese that touched on a lot of this, that's the place to look.

Japanese has Kanji, true. But learning Chinese helps a lot in learning Kanji, since they are almost similar, so it doesn't really affect me.

To counter-argue that, Korean has Han-ja, albeit less often used.

It's definitely way easier for someone who already knows chinese to learn japanese. I still would think it a lot easier to learn the korean writing system than learn japanese hiragana + katakana + an extra one to two readings for each kanji. Objectively speaking though, you wouldn't say japanese is easier than korean because if you learn chinese first, then japanese is easy. Partic. when chinese is harder than korean.

ed: not sure if chinese is really 'harder' than korean. Tones and bajillion characters are probably the worst of it but otherwise I don't think it's bad?

Well I should have added that it was from my perspective haha. But actually though, if you go through the proper teaching system, then learning Kanji without having background knowledge of Chinese isn't that difficult. I've seen Indians learning Kanji relatively fast.

And yeah, Chinese is damn freaking hard because the words aren't formed by 'letters' such as English, Korean or Japanese. And it has those 4 tones, as well as 'traditional Chinese' and 'New-age Chinese' writing systems. Urgh.

I think in terms of difficulty it is Korean -> Japanese -> Chinese.

I'm thinking of doing East Asian Languages/Culture/Studies/whatever for university and my preference is to focus on either Japanese or Korean (chinese is too hard).

I suggest Korean for the sake of SC

But on a more serious note, I would choose Japanese for various reasons.
