I think it's OK to have opinions like this, and I don't really play many games other than BroodWar (although I have, in my life). But what makes a game like Super Metroid "better?" Yeah it's a really fun single-player experience, but if I spent as much time playing Super Metroid as I have spent playing BroodWar, suicide would be the only option.
Personally, I agree with the people who say comparison is kind of meaningless. But you say this authoritatively, as if it can be proven using scientific method that Ocarina of Time and Super Metroid are objectively better than BroodWar.
They're both really fun, but I feel that given how much more depth StarCraft has thanks to customizability, competitive play, and continued support and updates from Blizzard, it's impossible to say that those games are "better," as if there is some set of criteria you used to determine their goodness.
They're all great (my personal favorite game to play, not including BW, is FF1 for NES. I've beaten it an unhealthy number of times, but still haven't put as many hours into as in BroodWar (playing, watching VODs, replays etc. (also, you can't really "watch" Super Metroid or Ocarina of Time and have much fun doing it, so they're great games but SC is a community))).
Edit: I guess you did write IMO first, so I guess the authoritative part I mentioned is not quite true ><

ff7 and sc are so different to each other, its like putting "tennis" and "poetry" in the same category >.>

can someone explain what was actually likeable about Zelda: Ocarina of Time for it to compare with something like ff7?
i played it for several days and it was so repetative, had no gameplay and no story whatsoever. it just felt like a console lonely single-player MMO but without any character development, any substance whatsoever. whatever little substance it did have was just repeated over and over and over again, from stage to stage.
it had quirky graphics and you could jump in a pretty neat fashion, thats all i could get out of it ....

Doubt it, these things always go to Super Mario Brothers or Pong or some retro shit that was obviously revolutionary for it's time but absurdly simplistic. :/ I would be happy with FF7 or Starcraft at #1. A MGS, GTA and Soul Calibur should also be in the top 10 imo. well he says FF7 will win because FF7 won the last best game ever contest Well that makes sense then. But every gaming website does these "greatest game ever polls" and FF7 very rarely wins. Starcraft never has, to my knowledge (if the site was RTS only I'm sure it would).
well if you pick the site, any game can win. For example, i'm pretty sure if you put up a poll including tossgirl on gamefaq's, she actually *gasp* wouldn't win. As the obvious other example, if you put the same poll about best game ever on tl.net, you'de get starcraft as the winner, far and away

HAHHAHHAHAHHAHAHHAHHAHAHHAHHAHAH Hey hey hey calm down I bet hes just another of those "supreme commander is the highest point of strategy ever!!" kind of guys, don't worry. Voted for SC, it truly is the most awesome competitive game. What the fuck is supreme commander? I've played Starcraft for 4 years and in the end I came to the conclusion that the game gets worse the longer you play it. Imo Machines 3D is the best RTS even though the Unit AI is pretty terrible. Also I said "probably one of the RE games" cause it depends on the taste. I think Resident Evil 1 is the best game ever but some say 2 is better etc. Now go play your 1a2a3a4t5t6t etc. game D:
rofl..."Machines 3D"...omg that's so fucking hilarious. Just read it over and over, it gets funnier each time.

[B]Also I gotta agree on the RE4 comment. The old REs on the PSX are the best. I even liked nemesis but I never finished RE4.
With RE4 they completely changed the way the game was played. Resident Evil used to be an adventure/puzzle game (you could even call it a strategy game I suppose, since there is a decent amount of strategy involved with knowing when to conserve ammo, managing your inventory, and knowing in what order to do the tasks of the game and which paths to take to go about doing them, especially if you're aiming to finish the game within a certain time frame). They've now turned it into a "shoot 'em up" FPS type of game that requires very little to no thought whatsoever. And the result? RE4 sold more than any other RE I believe - the most popular RE game by far. It's a sad fact, but game developers have now realized that they can make all the more money by simply catering to the mindless masses, who do not demand quality gameplay, but simply wish to see explosions and fancy-looking graphics on the screen. Which is why console games suck nowadays. Nearly everything that gets praise is FPS-oriented, and it's all the same sugar-coated shit with various superficialities. I don't know when RE5 is coming out (or if it's out already), but from what I read long ago it's sure to be the same joke of an RE game that RE4 was. It's unfortunate, but they've also now made a mockery of the Final Fantasy series, it seems. Oh well. At least I don't have any reason to waste money on these new systems.
Btw you should play the remake of the original RE for GC, if you haven't already. One of the only reasons to buy a GameCube imo (along with Super Smash Brothers Melee).

Sorry but have you played RE4?

Where is the Machines3D option
|
Yeah, i thought RE4 was fantastic...although i treat it like an entirely separate game
|
Er, exactly what is so fantastic about it? Yes, I've played it, but the boredom was too unbearable to bring myself to finish it. You do nothing but run around, pointing and shooting at zombies for what seems like the entire game. Is there anything at all you have to think about? Just point and shoot. Fun, fun.

This is going to bite me hard in the behind area....... but my favourite game of all time (the one I feel most emotional about if people diss) is actually FF VII. *ducks and hides* After that, yeah, it's Starcraft, with Mafia on a close #3.

It's hard to choose because games are better than others in certain aspects and styles.
For example, SC BW I would have to say is the best multiplayer game and is easily the best RTS and debatably the best PC game.
If we are talking about single player/console games then you can easily pick an RPG such as Chrono trigger, vandal hearts, Legend of Zelda, FF7, Super Metroid, etc.
Basically you can't have a valid poll of best game ever, that's like saying who's the best human ever.

I can't stand starcraft. It is a terrible game Want to play ShaqFu?

Starcraft has been nominated into the 1998 - 2000 category. It's up against Final Fantasy VIII, Xenogears, and Soul Calibur
right now they're just letting people make their brackets, voting will start in April sometime

I thought FF8 was overrated. FF7 is pretty good, but 8 just wasn't as good of a game. Xenogears and Soul Calibur were nice games, but I dunno. I could be biased cause I am on a Starcraft forum, but I just think Starcraft had some ridiculous staying power, not to mention that it essentially is the epitome of a great RTS game.
