What he says conforms with most of sports psychology. There's people who are exceptions to this but it applies to some degrees to most pro athletes or gamers.

I think he just been out of it for too long.

There hardly is a new generation. Unless you mean those players who have improved in the past 20 years and are doing better now than before. Amateurs barely qualifying to ASL is the actual new generation I'm talking about and it's still being destoyed by all the usual suspects.

Hopefully he can rekindle the old magic and win at least 1 ASL.

Yea almost every top player now is within 1-2 years of joining Kespa when Jaedong did and also around the same age give or take 2-3 years (he's also about the same age as bisu, effort, light, zero, effort).

Some players just don't play as well now as they used to unfortunately :\ . Seems like he stills practices a lot and is taking it seriously, but he's probably not putting in the 8-12 hour days of practice that he did during his peak that allowed him to surpass everyone else (I don't think ANYONE is putting in that much time of actual hardcore practicing any more?).

He's still probably #5 or #6 Zerg in the world depending on the day and match-up though right now? Probably won't ever have a huge turn-around in skill though. I think KSL2 will probably be his last BW hurrah

There are a couple other players that are "active" but lost way more of their previous skill than JD did from what I can tell. Free, stork, calm, killer(not sure if he just stopped playing though?), fbh, etc. Some of that might just be from lack of effort/practice. But I think there's also the matter of just some players get hit by age way worse than others. For instance players like effort/flash have way more wrist issues than others.

JD reigned supreme when speed could still overpower build orders and micro, and he had the right age for peak reaction time when he did. Seeing his age, regardless of meta, we will never see that old JD again. Imho the same thing goes for Leta, their plays were very reliant on speed.

Mindset or confidence is just one of the components, confidence naturally comes with a ton of practice. I'd say it's rather that stage fright is hard to overcome (hello Snow & Mini).

This part nails it really. Kespa era was a time where Speed and mechanics could overpower many things because a lot of build orders were new and many build order alternatives, optimizations, and flow chart decision making trees didn't exist yet. There were a lot more wild cheesy build orders players could pull off that will NEVER work nowadays because everything has been figured out. Superior speed and mechanics don't matter as much anymore because everyone has speed and mechanics now. Decision making and mind games more than ever reign supreme. Whoever fits the mold of the current meta the best will be the best. Only a very few players can play every single style, every single meta and be among the best select few. Soulkey is a great example of it.

Speed and multitasking are still very important though. You can definitely see JD keeping up with current meta and BOs but failing in mid to late game when his opponent overwhelms him with superior multitasking. Not to mention that most of the current meta relies on sublime control that wasn’t really seen during kespa era (muta micro vs marine balls is so much more advanced now).

Or are you guys saying that now that JD isn’t faster than everyone else, he’s got no advantage over them like before?

I’d say if anything he’s nearly on par with meta and BO knowledge with every other zerg (SK def above the rest though), but just not up to par on late game multitasking any more. Also his muta micro used to be undeniably the best in kespa era but now is by far the worst of top pros. Not sure what the deal is with that.

It is actually specifically his 9-16 minute play in ZvT that is worse than the other top zergs. In late game he's a monster. But often it seems he can't nail the defensive timing and optimization or mis-directional play between 9 and 16. It is also the hardest time frame to play for zerg. It is as if he often spends too much on the pre-9 mutalisk aggression and falls behind with his timing compared to the other top zergs.
For example Speed has farmed Jaedong for eloboard points/rating this past month. He also has negative winrates vs JyJ, RoyaL, Light and Mind. He's missing something that he seemingly can't figure out there. But when his muta play succeeds in getting an advantage though he closes games like a master.
