The Commentary List has been updated last on September 22 2007

Considering the recent rise in popularity of audio commentaries I thought it would be a good idea to create a thread that contains an updated list of the commentaries. Especially now that people are adding more recent commentaries to their own thread or perhaps creating a new thread for each set of commentaries that they make, we might see a complete clutter of commentary threads in the Broodwar section.
Instead I suggest to collect links to all the commentaries in this thread, together with a link to the threads where the commentator explains his commentary should he want to.

Due to the success of his audio commentaries Klaz has been motivated to try and have a shot at providing us live commentaries!

Add the following link to winamp to join the shoutcast (leave out both the spaces near the semicolon) http://s1.viastreaming.net : 7080/listen.pls

At the next live commentary a ventrillo server might be added. The server specifics will be made known in the sc2.org chat on the day of the commentary.

Note that currently a maximum of 50 concurrent users are allowed on the viastreaming server. No specifics are known for the ventrillo server.

I intend to keep this thread up to date but to do that I need your help! When you find commentaries on this site that have slipped under my radar then please drop me a PM and let me know. Also, it goes without saying that anyone who finds his commentaries here and objects to that can ask for removal.

great idea sr18 thanks for doing this. Would also be cool if maybe some of the commentators could get together and decide before hand about games and stuff so we all don't end up doing the same ones. I dunno might be difficult to figure out since everyone will want to do the savior, oov and boxer games, but just a thought.

one other suggestion; i think it would be great if next to the names of the commentators you could put the date of their latest commentary, and maybe arrange the games inside by date (either date played or commentary added). that way it'd be easier for people to check this thread and see if the latest game they wanted to watch has any english commentary.

I thought about this too. Maybe divide the leagues under the commentators? Like one or two commentators work on the msl games, one on the osl games and one picks out a good proleague match each week? But I think the whole purpose of the competition was to get something like this going afterwards, so maybe we should wait with any attempt at organising this or at least ask yubee what his plans were?

Regarding the date next to the name of the commentator: I think thats a good idea, will do that right away ;-).

About arranging the games inside the spoiler tags by date: Right now, due the fact that I add commentaries as they appear on this site, the commentaries are already sorted out by the date they are added. The lowest of the list inside a tag is the newest entry. When we get things better organised and the list of commentaries grows, a better system will be implemented. As for now, this will have to do.

I think Klaz definately has the best commentaries so far. They're fully involving and just as action packed as the ones the Korean commentators comment on. I think he makes the best use of all the aspects of pro-gaming, rather than just sticking w/ the play-by-play.
Seraphim's are good too and SuperiorWolf needs to go suicide O_Ov

Looking forward to hearing more english vods - just wish we had as much insight as the Korean commentators, since they have 3 announcers talking about each game.

It's fine if u want to watch the vods or replays, w/e, but why release commentary on them when u have almost idea what ur talking about? You do make the mundane play-by-play, but you do it very sloppy.
In a PvT match, you're like, "he going to want to make some goons, so he can fight the terrans metal". I guess you are teaching a 2 yr old how to play bw?
It's just a small sample of the rediculousness that you omit when u're conducting a commentary. There's no 'finese' to it - almost no insight into the game. Just you calling bland, obvious play-by-plays that we, the players (and if anyone has any kind of skill), we can alrdy tell what's going on just from watching a regular VOD w/ Korean Commentary - so we don't need urs.

It's like a slap in the face to see ppl give u postive feedback, since you're not doing anything bust wasteing ur own time - and i'm srry I feel that way.
The point is that you should watch some commentaries of Klaz or Seraphim, and learn how to conduct one in an actual progressive manner

There's no doubt he's contributing, he's just doing a very sloppy job of it. There's some obvious faults to his style of commentating. Given the pace of his improvement, don't expect everyone on TL to be so patient or go the extra mile and sugercoat their criticism.

I don't NEED you to sugercoat your criticism. I WANT your criticism, as long as it's constructive. Criticism like, "you suck, go kill urself and stop making vods" helps me a lot. I enjoy it when people think I suck and start making their own VODs, because I know that what I do is actually contributing to the community even more... but if you have no constructive criticism or positive feedback, don't type in "l0l j00 5uck n0ewb 5uck ur 0wn d1ck!!!!"

I don't expect people to sugarcoat it, or to not propose ideas. However just because you make a suggestion doesn't mean that you have to be bm about it. For example, Superiorwolf, I don't think you are providing enough insight that really makes us want to listen to yours over klaz . I mean someone could say that and it would get there point across, it would still show their dislike of what he is providing but do it in a way that is respectful.

This isn't about going an extra mile, its about not being a dick for absolutely no reason.

What would even make you want to semi-stick up for what that guy did? Did you not read anything that he said? There was nothing to provoke him to say it, just the fact that he randomly felt like responding like that.

Thanks to everyone who tuned in to the shoutcast today, I had a lot of fun doing it. I'll be casting again on Thursday 18:30 KOR time. The server address is the same and I will try to provide a concurrent ventrilo cast for those with synchronisation problems. The vent server address will be pasted in the sc2.org chat on the day. At the moment we are just experimenting with a public vent server, so I don't know what the capacity of that will be.

to preface, i don't really listen to commentaries that often, but since Klaz was getting a lot of positive feedback i decided to check out his (savior vs stork)

it's hard to find someone who is articulate enough to sound genuinely excited and not have too many bad vocal habits (umm, you know, like, etc), enough vocabulary/style to convey what's going on, AND a good amount of insight to the game to understand and notice things that the audience doesn't

i think it helped a lot that he was a fan of saviors, to know his playstyle and contribute a few things.

a few notes though, savior has gone without spire a few times vs protoss now, the game on nemesis in proleague is the only one i remember recently, i think his "mini slump" if we can even call it that was a result of him altering his style a bit to be more unpredictable. he's in fine form for the rest of the leagues though.

one interesting thing i think savior is capable of is that he does save builds for when they matter. for example, in last year's OSL, he played midas in the group stage on Hitch Hiker but lost in a long classic game where he cleared the neutrals and went normal lurker/ling into defiler hive tech.

later on in the deciding game 3 in the ro16, he used a muta-->guardian build that i believe he had right from the start but purposely didn't use in groups. i mean if others (DJetter being one) can see right away that a guardian build would be effective on HH, wouldn't the zerg proteams?

thus i think that while savior was trying, he wasn't revealing anything new to Bisu in the WWI or even "race wars." we'll see what adjustments savior truly made against Bisu's style when they play in the OSL bracket or the MSL final.

anyway great job and i'll probably listen to a few more. keep them coming!

superiorwolf i did listen to one or two of yours, and my advice is this:

--you need to brush up on your tone and vocab and the manner of speaking, for now it's too simplistic and filled with little tics that don't sound smooth. this is really really hard to change, as many people take public speaking courses to make themselves more articulate.

--gain more insight into the game, as some others have pointed out, what you're saying really isn't anything that someone who isn't new to starcraft would want to know. in the OSL the koreans have three guys doing the commentating, and the person providing insight is usually the guy who is a former progamer or coach or whatever. so if you are trying to be both roles, you really have to know something the audience doesn't and put forth that knowledge in a clean, smooth, articulate way.

i'm sure youv'e listened to nony or day's double commentary on the MSL final, that's a really good model to follow.

Klax, great job on the Stork vs Anytime game. :D

One little comment though, I don't think Stork's initial rush was as stupid as you said it was, as it did give him the tech lead, while not terribly hampering his economy. By proxying in Anytime's main, he forced Anytime to waste mining time to kill the gate, as well as create a zealot. Meanwhile, Stork doesn't lag too far back in economy because he had more probes mining, plus he put down the cybercore before his proxy gate was destroyed.
However, I think the mistake that cost him the game was that he didn't capitalize on his tech lead by going DT or Reavers, instead he essentially wasted it by 1) showing Anytime that he was probably going to get massed goons with range (Anytimes scouting probe could see the spinning cybercore), and 2) he didn't execute his dragoon attack well at all.
Essentially, his initial rush put him in a good position to win, but his follow-through was less than ideal.

It has been some time now since this whole audio-commentary hype started and the amount of comments a new commentator receives is distinctively less now than it was when there were only a few commentaries available. It is however still very important for commentators to not only get feedback to determine whether or not his commentaries are even wanted, but also to be able to improve so we can all enjoy his commentaries more the next time around. Remember, even very talented commentators require a lot of practice in order to get to a decent level.

Now I realise we are all very busy people who don’t have the time nor the desire to babysit every new commentator. Therefore I added a poll for each commentator in their own section in the original post. I will follow this up soon with a poll regarding the areas most suited for improvement, when I have the time that is.

great idea sr18. i'm really impressed by your non-competitive attitude and genuine drive to create something for the community.

The truth is we do need a team of commentators, even if tasteless was here, no one person can cover everything by themselves and if they try to they'll just get burnt out.

Feedback and support is important. So ppl on teamliquid.net need to decide whether or not they want audio commentaries and if they do they need to encourage the commentators with feedback and constructive advice. Because the commentators are doing it simply because they enjoy it and encouragement is a great motivator.

I do not say this for myself, because I have gotten a lot of feedback and encouragement and it's motivated me to do more and more. But as an example I can say that despite the feedback I ended up chosing to post my vids on youtube rather than google video (obviously I link it to this thread once they are uploaded) because I get more comments there and also I can see how many views I've had and as egotistical as that sounds, it is very gratifying and encouraging.

To the other commentators, I would like to point out that u guys should enter the contest, only two days left till the dead line, so make sure you enter the commentary contest. I'm very excited to see what teamliquid will come up with after it is finished.

Lastly I'll share my philosophy on commentaries with you. It's just my opinion, nothing more. Take from it whatever you want.

My philosophy on commentating is simple. Most people watch starcraft for entertainment, not education. They enjoy watching hteir fav players and love an exciting game. With that in mind consider the following. When someone watches your commentary they are going to ask themselves a single question. "Does this commentary make the game MORE or LESS fun for me to watch?" It's not an exact mathematical equation, but subconsciously ppl will come to one of the above two conclusions.

So think of your comentaries in that context, and try to make sure that they ADD something to the watching of the game.

As promised, I will follow the rating polls up with polls regarding the areas of improvement. When using these polls, please take the following into account.

A good commentary in my book consists of four things.

1. General speaking behaviour
Very important yet often forgotten by commentators is their general speaking behaviour and their voice. No matter how interesting the things you have to say, if your voice is irritating your audience you will never become a popular (good) commentator. The same goes for the speaking behaviour. A good commentator has the right pace, doesn’t speak too fast nor too slow, has a solid understanding of the language he speaks in, doesn’t stutter, doesn’t use “uh” and “erm” and has good articulation. A commentator with a nice speaking voice and good general speaking behaviour is halfway in becoming a good commentator.

2. Play by Play
For Starcraft, a good commentator is a commentator that can make mundane things exciting. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to up the speed of your commentary when a battle occurs - though it may help -, it simply means that you have to make every moment of the game appear exciting. Give the audience an incentive to watch for the things you point it, for instance by pointing out what the effect could be of what’s currently happening. However, have some trust in your audience. Don’t point out things that are clear to the most novice of viewers.

3. Gameplay analysis
A good commentator is able to read the situation. If you see a lot of SCVs leaving a Terran base early in a Terran vs Zerg game, you should immediately think about a bunker rush occurring. In an ideal situation a commentator always has something to say about a strategy, tactic or build that the audience didn’t already know.

4. Background information
Last but not least, a commentator should do his homework. The audience will expect the commentator to know more about the players, the event, the map, past results etc. etc. than they do. Obviously, a commentator is not a walking library who knows everything about everybody, so a good commentator prepares his commentaries so he has something interesting to say about the game. The least a commentator should tell his audience is what’s at stake (elimination round, group stage, proleague match, survivor, showmatch etc. etc.), who the players are and what their recent results were. If you for instance commentate on the savior game in the OSL next Friday, you should know that he played in the MSL against Stork only the day before and you should know how he faired.

Obviously, all the teamliquid commentators can and must improve in all of these areas. So the purpose of the poll is for the commentator to find out where the audience thinks he should improve the most.

responding to Klaz's post, me and him have been PM'ing eachother and working together to make sure that him + me and conaanaa arent overlapping eachothers work and doing the same games twice. That way, we have a wider range of games being commentated on. I think this kind of teamwork that me and Klaz have is good for the community and i encourage other commentators to do the same.

well just small things, like letting some commentators know what games your doing ahead of time. Like Klaz did the Stork vs SaviOr commentary, so me and conaanaa decided to do the Post-Game analysis of that game. Little things like that keep things from getting complicated and keeps work from overlapping.

Actually to be honest, I do feel that Dual commentaries are currently GoodJo and Superiorwolf's area. I don't mind the concept of doing them in the future provided the technical details can be worked out, but I think that it would work best if at some stage all the commentators could get together and work out a schedule that fits well.

Obviously this has to take into consideration what the community wants and ideally if one of hte TL staffers have control of the process it would probably be easiest in the long run.

I think that's what the original intention was by yubee and though I have jumped the gun a little by doing a couple of live casts, I'll be happy with whatever plan he comes up with and it might be better to wait for that rather than to overcomplicate things right now.

Personally I think dual commentaries are much better than single ones, especially once the commentators get used to eachother. Getting a working schedule is what is going to be hard though.

beautiful game between Nal ra v July @ Monty hall (even though I think Klaz called it Monty Python ^ ^)
Ever since Kangs rush didn't really work, I thought he might have been behind - and I thought he might have been crazy for over-exerting himself on all those expansion, but I guess it gave him enough economy to push him forward into the later game.. It was definiately a toss up at times, where either player could have won.

Where's the tie-breaker?!!? ><

I found a method of resyncing if your p2p stream is ahead. Refresh the stream, then stop it immediately. Wait until he's close to getting to where you are stopped, then right click -> play. It will buffer, and then start from where you stopped.

PvsZ is so difficult - there are so few of things u can do to "disrupt" the Z's economy or set him back in any way - July proved that in game 1 and 3.
You can't rush, because they outproduce you and are more 'powerful' w/ even just 1 sunken colony, not to mention some Z's make 3 or more at the beginning stages. After a rush fails, like game 3, they will just grab more expansions than you can control and eventually overwhelm Protoss. Drops only play into the more severity that Z is better than P - You can't predict where those drops are coming from. Even if Nal_rA knew about it and had units there, they prolly wouldn't have been enough anyway, but drops can completely bypass any defenses and go straight for the main target. If he would have been split up w/ his units, having them all over his base, anticipating a drop - July would have just massed hydra/ling w/ speed upgrades and just went frontal w/ a few lurker/muta backup and Nal_rA wouldn't have had enough to stop him.

Zerg has the perfect counters to what P whats to do - to where it's obsolete. If they tech 1st, Zerg gobbles up expos and defends all too well (2 expos w/ spores, sunks and lurks) to where P can only hold their ground during battles - but with Zerg drops and just the ability to outproduce P whenever they want, it's still a hard battle even out in the open. The mobility of hydralisks, able to pick off obs even in open-battles, again, adds to the superiority of the Z. Either way, rushing or teching, Protoss is in the 'hole' and alrdy has to catch up somehow..
The best example of this is the fact that these are 2 of the best representatives of their race. JulyZerg (Z) and Nal_rA (P). The fact that pro-Zergs can man-handle pro-Protoss's no matter what they do, it doesn't just add to their popularity and superiority but it showcases that any Zerg, if they know what they're doing, can dominate a P unless the P plays just right.

i disagree. Rushes don't generally work unless you take ur oponent by surprise. Ra went for an all in build 3 times in a row while his opponent expanded. He can't expect to win after giving the enemy the economy advantage. IMO the best way to beat zerg as toss is to fast expand, turtle and own them up with sair reaver. Just don't let them grow to big.

I know it's a hard to execute strategy but it's so devestating and zerg can do little to counter it once it gets going

I know, it's the best way to beat a zerg w/ a rush - is to catch them offguard. However, we're talking about Zerg here. They have overlords. When was the last time that a Zerg has ever been caught off-guard by anything P does? The best way to catch a Z offguard is to proxy-gate rush and we all seen and heard how that was handled by Savior, because Savior saw that Stork was only 1-gate in main, so he tried to pressure him early, and gained a lot of advantages because of that. Stork tried 2-gate proxy, which did somewhat catch him off guard, but against 3-hatch lings, you get out-numbered.

I understand where u're coming from w/ ur opinion on the best way for toss to win, but you're a Z players, aren't you? If Protoss fast-expanded in pretty much every-game v Zerg, it would get too 'comfortable' for the Zerg. They would know that there was an 80% chance that the Protoss would fast-expo, so they could 9 pool speed lings or just scout quickly to assure themselves that P is going fast-expo, and just take 2 or more expos. It's a lot of "if, if, if" in this situation, but Rvr/Sair is a hard combination to pull off, both in terms of control and the time it takes to actually be able to use this offensively. Zerg can get masses of units in such a short time, w/ 2 expos or more. They can also use drops, As Savior did well against Anytime @ Desperado and July did against Nal_rA. They're hard to predict and even harder to predict where. They're so devastating in terms that Zerg just drops 20 hydras and 100 lings, clears out the 4-5 cannons that were there (which serve to be no use, as they're only able to kill like 3 units before they're all destroyed - they are simply used to buy time for Protoss units to get there to help) and then the Z units destroy the nexus and goal-accomplished. They either pick the units back up, or just leave the area, having lost almost nothing. Like I said, you can't really tell when or where they're going to happen, and if you just have units spread out or try to focus too much on drop-protection, the Z will find out about this a lot sooner than u'll find out about what he's doing - in which he either do a drop somewhere else, make a full-frontal attack, or just sit back and take map.

Reaver/Sair might be the best arsenal Protoss has but the time it takes to actually use it, even v a Zerg that just has his natural - is far too long. By the time u get a force of rvrs - maybe 4 of them w/ 2 shuttles - and 5 or more sairs, the zerg would have dozens of hydras, well placed - scourges for the sairs / shuttles and spores to keep the lords relatively safe. If they see u're taking too long to make an attack w/ rvr's, they'll take more bases. The best way to actualy beat a Z w/ that strat, is to catch a Zerg that's over-exerting himself on expansions and not really protecting them correctly. If a Z just takes 1 expo at a time, w/ hydras to protect while morphing and sunkens to protect after the hatch is complete, you'll find it hard to beat a Z that's gathering so many bases - eventually it won't matter if u take out 1-2 expos or 20-30 hydras, because u can expect ultra/ling/defiler or devourers to completely counter it

"best thing for Protoss to do is to quick-expand" - How many times have we seen that not-pay off for Protoss - just as well as it didn't pay off to rush. Zerg either gets 3-4 hatchs and masses hydra or just drops at ur main. Protoss, when fast-expanding, normally puts a lot of focus on front-cannons (if they know they're going hydra). Ok, money well spent? Making 6+ cannons at ur expo's front, then to have 8 overlords drop 36+ units in ur main, where u only had 2-3 cannons and u were just starting to macro - that's the benefit of Zerg getting 2-3 bases w/ 2 gas, they can tech to anything they want really quick - plus their units are dirt cheap.

sr18 - I know someone was going to bring up the fact that Bisu continuously beats Savior. It was a big deal - Bisu is great. However, like that person that made the thread talking about how great Savior was, he did the same strat for all 3 games in that MSL final. I suppose it works conversely for the Zerg, as well as the Protoss. If you do the same strategy, your opponent will have an easier time dealing with it, time after time. There were many things that Savior could have done in those games that he didn't. Put Bisu up against Gorush, July and Savior and i'm sure he might beat Savior, but July and Gorush will prolly have something that will catch him offguard and slow him down and eventually cause him to lose. If you think about it, all those games Savior lost, were really easy mistakes to correct. All Savior needed to do in those games was to be more versatile w/ his units, having them spread out throughout the 3 bases. Add those units w/ 1-2 colonies, 1 being a sunk and the other being a spore and he was safe from anything Bisu is known for - Corsair / Dt drop. Savior was underestimating Bisu, thinking he wouldn't do the same thing every game, so in turn, Savior did the same thing every game thinking that 'this' game would be different and this time I'd out-macro him. Seeing Savior play so many other Protoss that try to do the same - yet failing to actually yield a profit and losing to Savior makes me question why he had such a hard time against Bisu anyway. He could have taken the 'easy' way out and just added the July-Defense of 8 sunks at every expo and there's no way a Protoss can beat you.

Sosha, the results do not back up your theory.

From this seasons proleague*:
PvsZ 17-23 57.5 win percentage for Z
PvsT 28-26 51.8 win percentage for P
TvsZ 32-18 64 win percentage for T

As you can see, Z only has a small advantage vs P. An advantage that is completely caused by the map Nemesis. If you take out Nemesis, the stats for PvsZ would be 14-13 in favour of P.

Also, as you can see, there is far more reason for Zerg to complain about imbalanced Terran than Protoss about Zerg, but we don't see countless threads and posts about that matchup now do we?

Finally, I would like to ask you to keep general matchup posts in a different thread. Balance posts attract flames and we do not want those in this thread. Thank you.

I didn't say the 1st thing about imbalance - just that Z has an easier time against P.
I didn't say anything about ZvT or PvT either. Everyone trying to point fingers elsewhere to cover up my points.
I know PvT is different. I didn't say, jeez Terran owns Protoss too, Protoss just sucks. Reach has been owning every Terran that's been put in front of him.
I'm not a Terran or Zerg player either, so I don't have any input on ZvT. I was making a point on PvZ / ZvP. I've played many of them, and seen many of them played. I know what each race does against Protoss to win or to get ahead.

Despite PvP, PvT, TvZ, ZvZ etc.. I'm talking about Protoss v Zerg and how seemingly easy it is for Zerg to win that matchup - your stats only merely back up my statements, rather than refute them. 57.5% win ration for ZvP - that's like out of 10 matchs, almost 6 of them will be won by Zerg - that's supposed to back up some kind of theory that Protoss is = against Zerg?

As far as ur 'imbalace' about TvZ - I think it's more about two races that can take the game, almost, at any pace they want. Plus the fact that there are almost more Terran users in Korea + the starleagues than Zerg - and perhaps the Terrans are a bit better than most of the Zergs they're playing? If you look at the Terrans, they have so many superstars - Nada, Oov, Flash, Sea, Boxer, Xellos, upmagic etc..
Zerg has how many stars.. that are consistent? Savior... July.. 2? The stats might be stacked against the Zergs in TvZ, but Savior can change all that around - his ZvT is like 20-12..

and excuse me for using this thread - being about BW, on a site about bw, to actually talk about the game, rather than just posting "hey good commentary" over and over and over.. like the other posts here

I wouldn't put one ahead of the other. They both add great insight to the game, one of them has a kick ass Irish accent, and the other is very excitable and says some pretty witty things. I'll listen to everything either of them put out.

some notes on nada/yellow

similar to gorush/savior, yellow did not use his mutalisk to full potential. however, this is because, like in gorush/savior, the zergs were conserving mutalisks to make guardians.

I don't think he lost quite so many mutalisks as you say, since he wasn't committing them to heavy harass.

he's perfectly capable of it - most zergs, even practice partners, can do mutalisk harass very well. if you watch him against goodfriend on arkanoid, or against boxer on luna, he shows that if he doesn't want to conserve mutals for guardian, he can get as many marine/scv kills as any other Z.

Against foreign Terrans he does yawn rape with pure muta.

mmm I digress. I am not even sure what my point is. basically, yellow didn't harass much not because he cannot, but rather because he was saving mutalisks for guards.

well Reach vs Shark was an hour long and I casted it live and my voice was dead afterwards, I'll try and sync my recording of the game to the vod but it's difficult because my stream buffered a lot during that game. But i definately can't re-record that commentary if the syncing doesn't work.

If i do watch games live I try to pick the best ones since I can't commentate on all and I did feel that casy vs stork was kinda mediocre

I am sorry if i dissapointed you though

im enjoying kalzs stuff. talks quickly, gets excited, tells whats going on. Pretty much what a commentator should do. Pretty good considering the medium. Personally I dislike vods as they are much poorer for deep strategy however as you cant see counts, timeing, or see where you want, but i guess this is catching on because its current games and easier to set up to watch. Gave you an 8 as by the description though, may not seem great, but solid by all accounts.

Game 1 between Bisu and Hwasin was definately GG. It was close as Hwasin was making that 1st strong push into Bisu's natural.. That was prolly his best bet at a victory push. We'll see how he does in the other games

Klaz, I do <3 u for ur insightful commentaries and just the fact that u're putting these VODs up w/ such great commentary but c'mon.. who cares about that probe 'jumping' over the wall of Hwasin in game 3.

It was caused by good timing on Bisu's part, using his probe to get real close to Hwasin's scv on barrack and by the supply and at the same time that the scv was building the barrack close to the supply, it over-lapped Bisu's probe and then bisu was attacking either barrak or supply and told his probe to 'stop' which caused them to jumble outward.. much like they do on Monty Hall and when they're trying to get passed the mineral blocks.. So it was nothing 'unfair' it was nothing BS about it.. Bisu simply used a tactic that every player uses, even Terrans. It is just chalked up to his skill that he was able to do that, and since it was part of the game and that Bisu didn't use any kind of hack to do that w/ his probe.. no it's not going to be an 'illegal move'.

How many times has scvs wandered str8 through units at a Protoss base, after leaving the main Protoss base for a time, then Protoss using 2 zeals or a goon to sufficiently block the ramp, only to have a SCV come back in after it was gone for a long period of time.. I hear it's called a "gas trick" in which the SCV is able to wander back in, through the unit-wall on ramp and able to scout the Protoss base again. I've had it happen to me.. I had units on ramp, totally blocking ramp and the Terran, I knew, didn't have any vision into my base, but his SCv still scampered right passed the ramp and into my main again. Everyone does it and there are ways for every race to do it. Just because Bisu did it in game 3 and spoiled Hwasins MM rush doesnt take anything away from Bisu or either players skill or intelligence. Hwasin should have adapted rather than go all-in and T's lucky they can even wall their ramp in most maps anyway, because Protoss cannont.

Again, <3 you, the person.. but I don't think it's fair to talk down on Bisu for doing something small and trivial as that.. Instead of placing the blame on Bisu for doing the probe-jump, u coulda just easily said that Hwasin shoulda just double expo'd w/ MM for cover or w/e.. I'm sure Hwasin knew 1-2 ways to deal w/ the situation of being found out and still play on in the game, but he chose to go all in and fail at it.. It was his decision.
Anywho.. GG's so far..
On to game 4 ^ ^

he deserved to lose game 4 because of the tactic he chose to use. He didn't deserve to lose game 4 because of his "lame, cheating, cheese" tactic in game 3 =[

hahah i knew all the bisu fans would go psycho. anyway that was my opinion at the time i saw the game, obviously it was heavily influenced by my passion at the time

sorry if i upset you, i guess i just felt really bad for hwaisin.

i do feel that the probe jump in that match up is different to the jump on maps like monty hall. Hwaisin thought he did everything to block that ramp, and he really did, the fact that bisu got through was freaky (though not lucky). I just didn't like the fact that the game was decided entirely by something so dodgy. I mean if bisu hadn't been able to get in and antcipated that something was up because of the block or if Bisu had been taken by surprise and still survived and won I woulda gained a huge amount of respect for him.

I just felt that move ruined the game, and was annoyed because it could have been a better game but for that move. So I guess in game 4 I just released my frustration. ANyway that was my opinion and I'm sorry if I offended you

Thank you Klaz for the Flash vs oDin game. I loved every second of it.

As for the Bisu vs Hwaisin game.. I have to agree with Klaz. Hwaisin made every possible move he could make to block that ramp completely. I cannot think of a single thing he could have done better to block. I think it spoiled the game in the sense that it was decided at that exact moment, from that sketchy little break in. I'm not experienced enough to know how much skill it took on Bisu's part to do, or how much luck was involved, but I sure would have enjoyed seeing the surprise MnM rush in full effect and watch Bisu defend from it. In that sense, I felt like it spoiled the game, but perhaps still Bisu deserves full credit for the win.

Thank you mani7! Finally someone that can stick up for 'creative moves'. Klaz, you said urself, that u partly blamed Hwasin for even continuing his strat even though Bisu alrdy knew about it and again Hwasin could have pulled out another strat, didnt have to make academy - could have went expand, fac, starport, MM drop or anything of the like.. It was His decision to keep up w/ the strat he used, and the manner in which he executed it.

It was obvious that Hwasin prolly didn't care about that game, on that map and just wanted to hurry up and get on to the next game. So he 'ended' it quick, letting Bisu have the V. Besides, Klaz and the guy that posted a little bit after him both said that even though Hwasin blocked, Bisu prolly woulda thought he was going FE or MM strat or something fishy, since he didn't block in either of the 2 previous games.

How many times have Terran ruined a Protoss plans for a strat? Protoss has to adapt and roll w/ it. Terrans have many a time floated an ebay or rack to a Protoss main to see that he had a robo fac and citadel, templar archives made - suspecting a DT-drop.. Protoss just has to go w/ it and expand and try to harass w/ the DT-drop doing as much damage as they can.

AGAIN! There were tons of ways that game and that part of the game could have been prevented. Instead of letting the probe to continue to linger there, he could have had the SCV that was building the rack to halt production, scurry in front of it and kill the probe. OR he could have used 2 scvs to block the ramp and kill the probe when it arrived. He was using one, but the probe chased it off by micro.. He could have sent one more scv to kill the probe and would have been just fine, after his wall was completed and prolly could have won the game by surprise by the Bio-rush.

I think maybe it was becuase Hwasin was the underdog in that match.. 'cause like Mani said, no one complained when Boxer did it, they prolly cheered him and it was prolly shown on a highlight reel of the week or something.. It all goes to player favoritism.. if Boxer does it.. it's art.. if a Protoss does something 'spectacular'... it's cheese..

I think you are making a few false assumptions here sosha and maybe it's cause u are a toss fan.

Firstly out of the three races - I like Terran the least(though obviously i love boxer, oov etc). I always prefer it when they lose. I always feel bad for toss cause i think they have a hard time vs Terran so I like to see Toss win.

Secondly I fully support audacious strategies. I like it when players go for risky stuff because it makes the game more fun to watch. be it boxer, nada or bisu. In that game it was actually Hwasin who was being the more audacious. He went for a crazy strategy, and I was annoyed that it was defeated not properly but by a probe jump. It would have been a much better game if he had been able to rush and if Bisu had defended it properly. Again he blocked his ramp, he didn't think bisu would be able to get past yet he did and it changed the game entirely. The irony is that bisu himself claims it wasn't intentional and was luck, which makes it all the more sad that the game was decided by the "probe jump."

I agree that opinions on this depend on players and circumstance. If the terran had been boxer and the toss been some unknown player or maybe even a minorly known player like chalrenge, more people would probably had agreed than disagreed with me. Such is the passion of starcraft. Again the fact that Hwasin was the underdog, the fact that he was trying the more audacious move and the fact that he was scouted not because he was unprepared but because the wall he built didn't work like it was meant to all added to my sense of injustice.

Lastly despite my outburst, I don't have anything against Bisu. As you can see from game 5. But this is starcraft, it wouldn't be the same if we all didn't love it as much as we do and were not as passionate about it.

I'm not asking you to agree with me. You have your opinion and I had mine. I'm just trying to explain why I felt how I did.

On the probe jump, I agree it made for a lousy game because it was luck, but when I first saw it I thought it was definitely on purpose. Which to me makes it seem a little unfair that you complain in the first commentary Bisu is too standard, and not creative enough. However, I suspect from this point forward, Protoss players will be looking for that SCV building a wall to stray too far, and take advantage of it purposely. It is definitely a redoable phenomenon, similar almost to a pylon jump over larger walls.

Anyway, they were GGs and I definitely favour your passionate commentary over one with no emotion that just casted the game. Don't change.

Klaz is right, Flash was boxer-like in da game.
I still think Bisu lost because he was surely too arrogant. How damn could he expend when Flash tries everything -2scv !- blocking the ramp ? I mean, a pgm like him, after his -cheating :p- victory against Hwasin should anticipate a move like that.
I've re-watched the replay, I mean it is so arrogant to expend when he doesn't know and what Flash is going on inside.
Maybe he thought he was only playing a kid...

hmm, a suggestion -- should we be careful about spoilers in this thread?

people might want to check this thread to watch the games for the first time with english commentary rather than live korean. sr18 has been doing a great job of updating the OP list quickly, but even he can't do it instantly, so people might want check the end of this thread to see if klaz or anyone has commentated the latest games.

btw thanks sr18, klaz, and the other commentators! you're doing a great job in helping to add excitement and insight for english speaking progaming fans.

Many people think Game 1 is a lame game because of FBH's "turtle" but I think Game 1 is an example for everyone starting SC or even more experienced players. This game featured everything in sc : rush, counter, ground units, mass units, micro, macro, air units, air/air combat, air/ground combat, special attack, special units, harass, mind game, humiliation, revenge etc.
This game was just exciting ! Even Klaze -god I love you !- called twice GG for both of 'em but in fact, he wasn't able to know who is winning finally. Yes, the game is long but how incredible it was !
This match also showed the power of each race : zerg are quick, are cheap, are incredible with good macro behind, are just so damn powerful with a god hand micro player as Savior. Terran is great with mass push, is powerful in pressure, is great with mid-units, can defend incredible, drops are crucial, m&m is terrible. To win this match, everyone used the best of each race and even it seems to be kinda lame, Terran IS a good defender and how logical is when you are under fire to use your last card and try to win the game. Yeah, I'm so sad about Savior because he did play well, so well, but as Klaze said : this is SC and how cruel, this is in part of the game.
Thanks again Klaze for this game. You are great and we are all here looking for another great game with great comments.

You realize that Tasteless has to make it understandable to everyone, not just the TL community.

Also you realize that Tasteless, when he gives analysis, is more accurate. Being a stronger player, his sense of the players' probable next move is much better.

I disagree with this. You can have good knowledge of the game and be able to accuratly predict what will happen next while still being a weak player. You need both knowledge/understanding and skill to be good at starcraft, while you only need knowlegde/understanding to be a good commentator.

I posted this in the wrong topic first, however i actually only registered to tell klaz how much i am enjoying to listen to his audios. And to motivate you to keep em coming.

So thanks a lot, you're excellent. I watched quite some hours already! The best moments are when even you are baffled and it goes: "Okay i can't see how this move makes sense, i really don't think that can work in any way" followed by a "OMG it works out. Genious play, absolutely genius...etc" like saviors mutalisk harass vs shinhan on neo arkanoid in game 5, Or Iloveoov rushing a single tank and winning the game with it.
Thats not to say you don't know what you're talking about, it's just cool to see that these guys pull off things that even an experienced commentator doesn't count with.

Only the speech quality could be better, but that's a technical thing guess you need to choose a low bandwidth.
Oh and it so often seems to be the maps fault if savior loses, it's suspicious

So thanks again, and i hope you keep doing these a long time.

Havnt watched these for a while, but I just listened on Game 2 of Stork vs FBH.
I dont know if I am alone with this opinion, but there is one thing I dont like about your (otherwise so awesome) audio commentaries.
That is that you keep criticize them all the time. For example in the beginning when the scv, before making a CC, looks for a proxyrush in the topright, and you go "Oh maybe he hasnt decided where to put the CC yet" like he havnt planned anything. And then, regardless of theirs builds and choises, you often go "oh thats a very bad decision" or "oh what a crappy build".
They are in the semifinal for a reason, and have practiced for a certain build day and night for these matches, and I just think they should get alittle more appreciation -_-;;

He went mass marine twice, without even hiding it very well. Sorry man, but that was a stupid build. He was either banking on having insane micro (and Stork having shit micro), or Stork having never heard of splash damage. He may have made it to the semi-final, but he was throwing it away with poorly executed cheese strategies. In the first game he even got SVs without researching EMP (which would have saved his army IMO).

I think it was okay trying it once, but trying it twice was just insulting to Stork's skill. He deserved to be eliminated. Stork showed he wanted revenge on FBH by going one base carriers. I honestly think these are just throw away strategies designed to humiliate opponents (and maybe get their confidence down for the rest of the series? psycho-warfare?). Entertaining, but I certainly wouldn't be happy if someone tried to humiliate me that blatantly.

Superiorwolf, i like your audio commentaries, as you bring a great deal of excitement to them. However, i think that your games with goodjo are even better, because while he provides insights to strategical moves, build orders, etc. you provide excitement. its the best of both worlds. your audios with goodjo remind me a lot of football or basketball game announcers, where there is usually somebody who can excite the audience, and an ex player. so yeah, i hope you guys can keep up the goodwork.

klaz i have one question: why do you call it excellent micro if silver uses boxers scv to pass a mineral line, but why did you call it cheap if bisu pulls the same off using hwasins scv to get past his supply depot in construction and scout his rush BO.
Isnt it simply good micro to be able to pull this off? I mean hwasin couldve used scv to block the ramp. After all flash did that with great sucess

Also in Silver's case, boxer was using the mineral trick to cross the line and it was ingenous of silver to use that to his advantage.

In the bisu game a) it was luck (as he admitted) and b) it wasn't that hwasin was trying to cross something he was actually building a wall. Two entirely diff situations imo, and also I was heavily influenced by my emotion at the time (feeling bad for hwasin)

Final match.

Going to bed. It should finish uploading while I sleep. I will link them together with replies tomorrow. I think Moletrap is still in the process of loading his vids. He had some trouble with the audio on the last one but went to bed before correcting it. I expect everything to be up mid noon tomorrow.

At this point I am done commenting until group E. Any requests?

Thank you all for the recent commentaries. I enjoy them all and watch them frequently.

I wanted to inform of a mislink or double link from one of Klaz' commentaries as a mild error. The link to Oov vs Bisu match is actually redirected to the Oov vs Nada match on the 1st page in Klaz' spoiler. It is the correct link from earlier on this page from Klaz though.

This is the link to Nada vs Oov that is listed twice on the first page.

Well, i like all the commentaries, hey are informative. I like Klaz and Tasteless the best because of the enthusiasm that Starcraft really needs. I appreciate every commentary, I like diggity and moletrap and Conaana, but if they were more enthusiastic then that would be incredible. That's my opinion, flame me if you disagree. I haven't heard much of Conaana's commentaries but I don't think he deserves any of the bad comments he always gets. He does what he enjoys and he helps noobs His voice isn't annoying. Well that's my opinion.

In case anyone misses it in the Tourney forums... live shoutcast/videocast tonight:

I wanted to let everyone know from here out, we will be doing videocasts for our games, so feel free to tune in and watch the players compete!

Tonight features a great quarter final match between two players who may be favorites to win it all, lzgamer and lefnaij. It's a shame that one has to be eliminated but you all will be able to watch the stream live tonight of the games.

I actually have been trying to curb my enthusiasm. The more excited I get, the more mistakes I tend to make. Mostly because I just want to sit back and go "wow".

As I get more practice I will be able to combine the two.

All of my commentaries have been released on the TL.net tracker in their original format.

The benefits are :

1) Better quality than youtube. Though in many cases I used "small vods", the quality for those is still nicer than what you get on you tube.
2) Single files rather than being split into parts.
3) other crap I can't think of right now.

Major thanks to zatic for the FTP to uplaod and the initial seeding of the torrent. To me this is like a summary of the last season.

In case you're losing sleep over it, klaz. When Savior was killing DT without any overlords on the screen, and you were wondering about it... he detected the DT using plague. Thats why he ran away after killing 3-4 of the DT and 2 were left. Not all of the DT were plagued.

Awesome game! You missed the the best part (imho) though, when savior casts plague on the darks where you said you couldn't see saviors Overlords. Pure genius.

for me the best part was the drop. but i have to admit i didn't realise that plague makes dt etc visible, it's the first time i've seen it used that way and I was too busy commenting on everything else to realise that was what happened. Also the vod quality wasnt great so I couldn't really "see" the plague on the DT's(could hardly see the DTs themselves). It's only when i rewatched it just now that I saw the tiny flicker of red on them. But thanks for pointing it out
