Did you really hear much about larva, shuttle or last back in the kespa era? They are very good and popular now. I think you are too pesimistic. Of course I have!! I think I am being realistic. I would absolutely LOVE it if I was proven wrong!!! And again, what I am saying is: a.) There is currently no system to effectively encourage and nurture new talent to enter the professional scene; and b.) No bw players = no bw scene Again I am not saying that a.) will not be resolved. I am saying that to think that professional bw as we know it will continue to live without finding a solution to a.) is just wishful thinking ![]()

Even if you pick 12 random guys out of those who made it into the ro24 and sent them to the miliatry, there'd still be more than enough top players. I do agree that fresh blood would be great. But I think there are enough players, especially those who already finished their military service, that we'll have a constant stream of good games.

What drives any e-sport is one old-guard being replaced by talented new blood, if the old guard just retire because of age and illness rather than competition that would be concerning. I just hope with streaming and income from twitch and afreeca, there is enough room for a new generation of BW pros. However, I don't think we'll see a lot of players of Jaedong's calibre ever again.

Just realized JDs last game before the end of broodwar in 2012 was a loss to Rain.

and snow, and now it is last (Ssak? O.o), soulkey and rain. Jeadong would have won with any protoss player with things he did, Rain has made absolutely inasane hold in my opinion, no zerg would beat him on this day, on this map. I can empathize with JD, I was playing piano whole my life, and since few months I can't play it because of nails disease, it hurts so much I can't play so I stopped playing, I think that health is more important than making people happy with Your performance, please stop playing, it was good run, there is no comeback in game of life. (or play one game daily, the most important is running game in head I think, I don't play only hardest parts on piano, I am amble to play soft parts) Best regards.

We will always have all of those amazing games to watch too. They will never go away. If it's time for Jaedong to quit because of his health so be it, I'd say it's also a time to be happy about, and to celebrate one of the most amazing careers in Starcraft.

That was BeSt There's a video on youtube that shows Bisu looking at his military enlistment date as being in 2015. Think he got out not too long ago. Would have linked the vid but don't want to get too off topic. Super sad about Jaedong, but at some point the pain just becomes insurmountable and interferes with your ability to perform and practice. I wonder if it'll interfere with his military service or if there is some niche role in the military that former pro gamers fulfill because of their similar wrist injuries. No way you can fire a gun with fucked up dead wrists, right?

To me Jaedong is competitive StarCraft. He represents everything I ever wanted to be in a player: how I played, how I thought about and saw the game, what skills I prioritized. And outside of the game he possessed qualities I yearned to possess as a person: humility, drive, passion, and an indomitable will. It's a strange mix of feelings that are welling up in me thinking about Jaedong entering the military and retiring for good. Something akin to mourning. Nostalgia? Not quite. Regret, and a deep and overwhelming sadness. Maybe I'm harboring a small shred of the emotions that must be running through him right now. I know that to me, and many others, Jaedong will always be the greatest player that StarCraft has ever produced. His retirement will mark the close of a chapter in both his life and mine. I wish him all the best.

Bisu has been constantly active in the scene since he came back in 2013. In 2015, he was in the last SSL finals for example. Sure, his date was supposed to be in 2015 but that's not what the other poster was trying to explain at all afaik.
