1.18 is coming out soon, what server is everyone gonna play on? Are Europeans gonna play on EU or are we all gonna play on US East/West? Which players/teams are planning on making Fish their main server?
I'm not sure whether or not bnet is gonna have a /chs all feature, hopefully it does so we can easily find chat channels. If it doesn't i'll put together a list of channels so people know where to go, feel free to post your teams chat channel and your main server (hopefully everyone ends up playing on the same b.net server). I'll update the OP with everyone's info.
On a side note i think it's kinda dumb that we don't have a single centralized server/gateway like ICCup or Fish on bnet. I'm not sure the player base is gonna be big enough to support multiple servers but i guess we'll see. Ideally it would be best if we had a single server with a strong player base so we could have a lot of pub games and higher quality matchmaking games, that would also create a close knit community .
Fish:
Op TL (main server meet up channel) iFU-
US East:
Clan X17 (main meetup channel) )v( (teamplay community) Tiny (french speaking community) op [SK]
Europe:
Op moo (main server meet up channel) op bg (bulgarian community)
US West:
op ugl (fastest map community) op dM-
Korea Op TL (main server meet up channel)
ShieldBattery: (still in beta)
|
i wonder if n.stop) is still around. i'd likely just chill on the TL channel
|
It might be easier to just go with Discord instead of bouncing between chats on Bnet and Fish.

Dunno, i view discord as more of a private thing and not everyone has it installed. Bnet chat channels are public and they're accessible to everyone.

I assume op tot) will be making a return on Europe
I think a lot of people will treat Fish like they use to treat iCCup. Play on there for ladder games, play on one of the BNet servers for play/obs, UMS, or just chilling with friends.
|
Sounds awesome, I'll be there! Probably will mostly play on Fish too, but sure is nice if East and others back indeed!!

The issue here is that the newer players who don't really know anyone on BW might feel isolated if they have nowhere to go.

Does anyone know what changes (if any) are occurring for the fish server? They said 'increased native support' but thats rather ambiguous. Personally I cant even figure out how to type in hangul, ergo, I cant activate the anti hack on fish.

i have a thread on that
http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/brood-war/518612-wlauncher-help-fish
But we might not even need WLauncher to play on Fish once 1.18 comes out.

What happened to the good old jeja system?
I think people here should go ahead and teach some newcomers a thing or two sometimes

How do I even run BW without a launcher? Can I still use MCALauncher to launch bw/stream? Or just starcraft.exe?

Patch is on the 30th, right? Do we know what time? Not sure when Blizz usually schedules them.

I think you're gonna need to dl the Bnet Launcher. I'm not 100% sure but i heard that they're gonna add BW to it.
So basically you run it the same way you'd run OW, SC2, Hearthstone etc.
I'm not sure whether or not i should uninstall and reinstall BW from Blizzard's launcher tho :D

Download app, create an id on blizzards site. App will have all of the Blizzard games, install whichever you want (BW should be added on the 30th) and run it.

Hey, so I love US East. Been there since it was created. But to your point, I don't think it'd be wise to split the community apart into different servers. If possible, we should definitely be looking to centralize people onto fish + one other server imo. At this point in time, I think we can expect a slight boom in player count, but I'm not optimistic enough to say it will be active enough to populate across 5+ servers again.

Yea im expecting a lot of those channels to come back, waiting on 1.18 to come out before i add all those neutral channels (just to make sure they're active).

Ideally i want this to happen too but we can't force people to play on whichever server we want, the best thing we can do is give them options. Hopefully everyone will eventually end up on the same server.
Of course this would be much easier if Blizzard made 1 mega gateway instead of having 3-4 regional ones..

I think people will naturally congregate to whatever server is most populated, skilled, with decent connection etc. Which is fish-- assuming there is english language functionality ofc, for the website and so on.

For the time being we just wanna see how things look once 1.18/BW:HD comes out (the scene, the level of activity etc.). Nothing really set in stone yet.
Let's try to keep this thread related to 1.18 questions/chat channels.

How about root academy for us noobs :D

You listed every servers except for iccup. Do you expect it will die once 1.18 is released?
|
Two concerns I have are: out of all the interest BW is receiving, how many people are potentially coming back to play (for an extended period of time), and what is Fish going to be like. I'm hesitant on how receptive Koreans will be to an influx of foreign players, if any. It's pretty clear at this point, Fish is pretty tight on the way they like to do things and the barrier to entry is high. Foreigners who know how to work around and manage communications with Koreans can do it but it takes time to learn the mannerisms. Will Fish be changed at all? The fact that it's going to be an integrated server means that anyone can join it- does that imply that anyone will be able to play with anyone now with the expected matchmaking system to be in effect? I fear the current residents of Fish would not want the skill level to be diluted. What are your thoughts?

Our clan channel for every server is gonna be Op ROOT, ideally it would be fun if we could start a big meetup channel where people can interact, find custom games and start flamewars with each other (kek). Why should we even care if the skill is diluted, or care if they care? Bad players will bottom out at the bottom end of the ladder. If someone isnt as skilled as you, you simply wont be playing them. I am concerned with whether or not they will be culturally accepting of foreigners, because some koreans can be rather xenophobic and racist. "I am korean" to activate an anti hack says all that needs to be said. But I can only imagine if the servers getting integrated that some level of concessions are going to be made on things like this; seems weird that blizzard would endorse a server that, previously has been called by the people who run it "a korean server for koreans" if that werent the case.

I remember playing with someone who told me about channel "Sex" once existing on U.S East, having a bunch of people having Cybersex or such.
So after the game I left Europe and entered channel sex. This was like in 2010. there was 8-10 accounts in there typing out links to pictures and sexing it up, having links in their profiles of pics of "them". Was a weird experience. Just sat there watching it happen, wondering why. Thinking of B.net as a secret dark web place as it lives on while the sc2 and the world goes on. Like if this exists what else exists? Channel NSDAP? Channel ISIS?
It was probably a bunch of 13 year old boys pretending to be young girls, but that's where I'm gonna be hehe;)

BTW. People playing on Fish. Does it lag for you to play from the U.s To Korea? Like will this be a completely lag free superserver?

Not adding iccup is like saying it wont/should not exist in the future.. it's like disinforming people to make sure they forget it. Iccup is currently the most popular foreigner server right now and new gamers should know what are the channels available. There are even teams that attrack several people in their channel (eMg, Pain, Netwars, ...)

Haha, I remember this channel. Back in late 90s when I played on Bnet it was actually pretty popular... like 30+ people in there all the time chatting. Weirdly enough, I barely ever remember sexual things being discussed there. I think it was just a bunch of pubescent kids hoping to find something exciting, then they end up there and start shit talking like they normally do.

So do we not yet know if ICCup is going to coexist with the new patch/servers?
Will the latency on USeast be reasonable? Or any of the fancy anti-hack measures the community servers provided?
Last time I actually played BW I remember USeast/west being absolute cesspools of hackers and like 200+ ping despite living on the east coast.
Do we have any info yet about what they're planning to do with latency/ladder stuff? I hear they're updating the netcode so you won't have to port-forward anymore, but are they also incorporating some of these lovely features from the fan servers?

Apparently they are modifying the netcode settings to make it more like "LAN" setting on BW, which is what I believe ICCup and Fish use.

If the antihack they set up actually functions well (and surely it should? they've had over a decade to prepare it...) and b.net has its own ladder, theres no real incentive to play on ICCUP for anyone. It really does come down to the question of regular battle.net servers vs fish, given fish is the server with tens of thousands of people on it, established progamers etc. ICCUP is a small servers whos only advantage is a poorly designed ladder with lan lat and anti hack. All of that is superseded if what I described of battle.net is true, by battle.net and fish.

I hope they combine US East and West at least. One big foreigner server would be perfect for newer players.
It's very difficult to play UMS on Fish as a nonkorean, because downloading maps takes longer and you usually get kicked, plus maps are all in Korean. I don't see most foreigners going to Fish - only higher ranked 1v1 players.

I was alluding more to the fact that everyone is already on iCCup. The question is with this influx of new players, whether there will be opportunities for other servers to become active again. iCCup by default is where people currently play, because we have been forced to play on a single server. Like others have said, East is always in my heart so it'd be cool to revive it, if possible.

Wait so ICCup is gonna run 1.18? From what I read I just assumed that it wasn't getting updated, if it is then that's great news!

Typically i don't really have any lag issues when i'm 1v1ing vs koreans. I start feeling lag when theres 2+ foreigners in a game w/ other koreans, for example in a 2v2. I live in Montreal (East Coast).

Yea even playing melee 1v1 and team games can also be hard, you usually end up getting banned whenever you start dling a map t_t. Not the case when you're laddering tho.

I kind of agree here. When iCCup isn't even able to keep above 300 users on the regular, I don't see how having all the servers will benefit anything again.

I've been talking to scy since and i think were going to revive x17 as a competitive clan this time. Only good high caliber players will be able to join not like how it was at the end of x17 when most newbs joined. Depends tho if the game will be crowded and if its gonna stay active.
so op x17 on both fish/USEAST will probably be a thing yes.

well, i wanted to wait with any announcement until i had something meaningful to say. But okay. It's a work in progress and at this point it can not be guarenteed we will be able to provide 1.18 soon, but we intend to so.
Curently, we are looking for coders, who are up to the task. And it's a challenging task for sure, since the code structure of server and launcher is pretty old. There will be support by the official tech department though (they usually work on the DOTA server).
Anyone interested may contact me via PM or skpe. There will be no official announce until i can provide more viable information though.

you can still join chat channels on PTR, /join (enter channel name).
that being said they're all gonna be empty cus its the PTR, everyone is on brood war usa-1 / 2 / 3 etc.

Dunno if there's a go to channel on Fish, should we just come up with a TL channel for every server? Op TL?

isnt there a teamliquid channel anymore ?

It is so far the only channel were the few foreigners fish players gathers.
On Europe there is this channel op moo where we usually meet.
Fuck op ToT) this clan is dead. And regarding op teamliquid this channel never really worked out weather it was on iccup or old fish, we can also assume that defiler.ru community will probably have a channel as well. Just go with the flow no need to force this.

defiler channel is always op swarm, love ToT <3<3 but how many of them are active ?

ToT)Naugrim( for sure. Eriador plays a bit from what I know, Ret plays a bit too. MoE played 2v2's sometime ago on Europe as well.

So 1.19 does not seem to check your ip but rather your bnet account. So even though I live in Canada I automatically default to fra-1 when I login.

Does it matter if the clan is alive or not, it's just a meetup channel that all of us know. Op TL is another channel that's easy for everyone to remember.

Is there a particular reason they kept the seperated servers? Why not one big server and one default channel so the (not so many) players still playing can find eachother easily. All separated servers doesn't really make sense..

Guess I will join both channels then :D

Two things.
First: Are there any clans that have started up, or any chat channels other than these that aren't listed if the creators don't mind them being listed.
Second: Is there any way to get games on the Korea server. Its so much more active. I have nice internet too, but still always red bars on Korea.

Looks like clan x17 is the main channel on East, op moo on EU. No idea about West tho.

thanks Your name being on LAN is there just so if there were others playing with you they would show up as well.
You can chat cross east/west servers, but not play.

Where can I find a channel with people to practice 1vs1 with? At the moment there's around 550 players online in Europe and less then 100 are in the official channel "Brood War En-1". Altough there is quite a few in it no one says a word.
I play random on the ladder (D-rank 1500~) but I prefer ZvT, ZvP and PvT

I play random on the ladder (D-rank 1500~) but I prefer ZvT, ZvP and PvT I think most people chat in Discords now. Some low level Discords that may be of interest would be CPL, RSL, L_Master's Beginner Starcraft Discord. The largest is FBW aka Foreign BW. You should be able to find players there!

the only answer is shieldbattery

Who knows, wish there were a channel or 2 where everyone hung out like the old days. Think back then it was 55, cristal, toys and some other one that i cant recall from the top of my head atm. They almost always had 20+ people each.
Does anyone have links to these starcraft discords.

Does anyone have links to these starcraft discords. It would take someone as long to find them as you, if you use the search bar on the top right. Straight up. Just look up the most recent/major threads for all of the titles I gave (CPL, RSL, FBW, L_Master's Beginner StarCraft Discord, etc.). Then you can post them here for the next person.
FBW is the equivalent of motel/x17 from back in the day, basically - except way, way larger and more active.

The problem with discord servers is that they usually end up getting spammed with picutres and such. The in-game channels are a lot cozier. But it will have to do for now so thanks anyways.

I agree with this. Also people usually in a chat are ready to chat and play. How about we just a popularize a server and chat, especially since ladder matches you with anyone now days

Two most active channels I've seen in Uswest: )v( (formerly old motel) Op nom

Are there some clans were you can join ? Would be nice to have some links for each country, if there not already. I remember getting quite frustrated from the lag with northamericans and the constant English xd.

There is only one way> Go to Korea. Funny enought there was some interview with one of the software engineers, that talked about how they had to connect europeans and koreans over the oceans. Because it made better connections(ladder), instead of going through Eurasia.

I think it gets back to the idea of things that take your attention. Like you can do so many things via discord and so many people with their own personal lifes. It just takes so much attention from you. It is similar to anything you want to learn or studying on your computer. The computer has the advantage yo stimulate your braincells and eyes, which lets you noot get sleepy and makes gets you the dopamin kick. At the same time the computer has so much stuff clock, programms, youtube, articles via your browser, recommendations depending on your operating system settings take away your focus, natural just like your attention get focused on movement in movies, etc.
It really doesnt help, when you are trying to learn something or focus on something having thousands of things poping up every few seconds, be it insignifcant messages for your journey, quest, task, action, etc. on discord, articles when opening a new tab on your browser or recommendations for videos that you may be interested in based on a algorithm that knows many things about you. Same can be said about the stupid apm alert/display, probally the worst thing to actually improve your multitask, attention reduction per action, etc. It literally taking away attention from you reminding you to step up, even with sound, if activated. That attention could actually be used to do usefull stuff and actually improve instead of spamming and get to the 95procent you want. At the core though, i think it is also about the time you are wasting, even though technology in combination with luxury has freed a lot of us to explore other facettes of life and open our horizons. It also has enslaved us with never ending interesting things, that we cant get off nor do we really want. In many ways computers and their other relatives have similar effects as other drugs exploring the never ending stories of life. At the end of the day the best thing to achieve your task is to actually do the task and getting rid of any distraction, while you can. Otherwise you will be in a never ending loop of getting reward before achieving anything and needing it to not drown into sour, and as such survive.
