for example, I worked for Police(security force) instead of military service. most soldiers sleep in barracks about 21months. they cant use cell phone and computer 21months. but killer's position is administrating reserve force, so now he commute to barracks.(he is lucky guy lol) usually he wathces JD and Bisu's streaming. Sometimes he play with JD. so i think he will come back to BW

Good decision. Broodwar needs fresh blood, which is not coming unless tournaments are available for everyone. SSL is just trying to get the viewers by inviting only the big guns.

At the same time, we'll get to see how much the exclusion of these top favorites will affect viewership for an event like this and how much their names are really propping up the scene.

Prelims would be better but a fan vote will not decrease the fan scene. Therefore I think it's just dumb to boycott the whole event just because of this ( I know you weren't arguing against this).

I would argue that it's their responsibility to use the clout they have for good in the absence of any real structure in how professional BW is organized. Also, TBLS will continue to have this star power as long as it's impossible for anyone else to break out, which in turn will be the case as long as fan voting or Afreeca viewer count or whatever determines tournament participation. I think open signups have been important for players like Last, who is much more famous now than he ever was during the KeSPA era. I'd love to see a chart of his viewership before and after that first really good run in SSL.

I mean they only actively joined the scene as organizers and sponsors after Sonic basically rebuilt it himself -players like Flash, JD, Stork, Rain, Soulkey? players who actively extended their SC2 contracts instead of joining the amateur scene early, like Bisu, and rebuilding it? Personally I think it would be great to have a 2nd tournament series, have a 2nd big organizer(SpoTV) and a 2nd big sponsor(Jin Air) in the scene.

I dont think they're trying to capitalize on Sonic's league at all, but at the same time, when SS2L was announced, Sonic's thing had been going on for 9 seasons at that point.

- spotv/jinair want to have the most popular players to get better viewership - expros/streamers (especially the most popular ones who earn the most) don't wan't to compete in multiple tournaments, since it's not profitable for them (most of them will not get any earnings anyway) I can't blame either, although additionals tournaments can only be good for the scene Also, Sonic receives too little credit imo, despite how the whole story turned out. I doubt BW would have remained popular enough for all the expros to take the decision to come back in BW (at least the recent 2015/16 ones)

I liked the GSL back when it was a single-elimination BW tournament. The SSL will definitely need to expand the format in future seasons to allow players who don't yet have popularity to earn a spot through merit. My ideal format would be a series of four-man MSL-style groups--- + Show Spoiler + A vs B C vs D Winner(A,B) vs Winner(C,D) winner advances Loser(A,B) vs Loser(C,D) loser is out Loser[Winner(A,B), Winner(C,D)] vs Winner[Loser(A,B), Loser(C,D)] winner advances and loser is out ---where each match is Bo3 and groups are picked at random. Then in the Ro8 it would be single-elimination Bo5s.

Don't get me wrong, having people such as Flash still winning StarLeagues is quite reassuring, but the SSL is going to offer a refreshing take on things, so I'm quite interested to see how this works out. This leaves a lot of room for upsets and unexpected results. I find that kinda ironic because this tournament initially was the exact opposite of what you're describing because it was solely invitational based and not merit based. I don't get how SSL is going to be really refreshing, its kinda makes it a farce if so many good players aren't playing. The only problem with Flash & the old guard keep winning is if there arent open qualifiers which are important to keep the scene healthy. Just checked SC2 liquipedia to find their channel since SSL was organizing only SC2 tournaments and WTF happened to it? Design of liquipedia looks horrible. I don't know if it's something global change or not but hope they won't touch BW one.

There are some ways to postpone military service.(expediency) University, Trip to abroad, Preparing some jobs or exams(government employee, CPA, etc)... So i think bisu may choose something which i wrote. But he didnt say anything openly. It is clever behavior.
