SC2 is a different game requiring a different skillset. There was no reason to expect every great BW player to be great at SC2 and there was no reason to expect everyone who enjoyed BW to enjoy SC2. These two errors were huge reasons why the actions of Blizzard in Korea could only be seen as belligerent and counter-productive.

Jaedong was already past his prime when professional BW came to an end. It would be naive to suggest that going back to BW is something that he would do primarily to be on top again. And while it is well known that players have dropped off in the past as a result of losing passion, no matter what game they were playing, that doesn't really explain why a player would quit a game he has played professionally for four years to return to a game he played professionally for seven years. Indeed, there's no reason to think he ever stopped playing BW to begin with.

Exactly this. They were "forced" to switch because Blizzard and Kespa probably thought the games were similar because both have "Starcraft" in their names, but the fanbase in korea (I live in korea and asked multiple people about this too) and here quickly realized that it was not the case, those games were different and it just didn't make much sense to force pros to play a different game. It was no different than suddenly making cs:go players switch to something like tf2 just because both games are shooters.

Doesn't mean that one or the other is bad, just different, so it felt very natural for me to get bored of sc2 very quickly at the time even though I was extremely excited for it. I felt sad and disappointed but I just realized that I should keep playing sc1 because it was the game I enjoyed and there was no reason for me to feel sad since I could just keep playing it, and I feel it's the same for the pros now like flash and jaedong.

1.6 is way closer to cs:go than bw is to sc2. People think bw is similar to sc2 just because of the name, if you've played both games you would know that they are entirely different, like, not even close. Cs:go and 1.6 are similar enough so that successful players from one game can easily translate their skills to the other one. Hell, even the maps are basically the same.

You know.... I was going somewhere with this, but it's sadly useless to argue it anymore so I'll just stop Ultimately I may just need to follow Jaedong back to the best game ever made.

But you all know somwhere in your mind that this day will come sooner or later. Nothing lasts forever sadly and I wish there was a better video documentation of the events. But new generation of pros are comming and you cannot stop that.

All these Broodwar Nutters foaming at the mouth at the idea of Jaedong playing BW. I would be all for it if I saw any future in it. Unless BW is now bigger than sc2 somehow. Not to mention he hasn't been playing that game. You can't just go back to different RTS with different hotkeys like nothing happened.

If he's lost interest for good, I hope he finds the right path in the next chapter of his life.

Flash went back and pretty damn quickly got to the top beating some of the best players left. I imagine JD could do the same.

If the amounts of money you can make from streaming BW on Afreeca mentioned are true, and I don't doubt they are, I think an old familiar name like JD could be living off it and getting some savings for the time it lasts. Quite decent sums and probably much more than he can get from EG and Korean tournaments right now since he hasn't been at the top level for a long time.

I'm all for it since the other option looks more and more to be quiet retirement. It would be foolish to dream of BW becoming a big esport even in Korea again let alone anywhere else but as long as there is an interested audience that likes to reminisce, give them what they want.

I don't think money can be a reason for JD to be active in BW again (although they don't hurt). Most likely is to enjoy the game, and I never saw JD enjoying SC2 (except maybe when he defeated Naniwa). Fact is, if he joined a clan and started blasting protosses, there is still a spark there.
I'm still watching the PDP POP game 5 against Snow regularly (the one with cracklings letting Nexus with 5 hp and 2 defiler defense against protoss Snow-ball) and I bet he can regain the pleasure of the game one more time.

Whatever makes JD happy makes me happy. He seemed pretty depressed in SC2. I'm gonna cheer for him regardless of what he's gonna play.

I don't think JD seemed particularly depressed in SC2 but he just dropped to a lower level and took lots of time off eventually to retire. If you watch the State of Play doc, he says nothing about passion or love towards BW either. Instead (and I think this is rather inspiring) there is the quote about not really playing for fun but mostly for work. I imagine he still has some love for what he's been doing successfully for so long but I wouldn't project your own attitudes into him like you seem to be doing here.

I think this thread ran its course on the SC2 forums. Moving to the BW forums now where it should have been posted.

I had to laugh a lot about this wording. Hilarious

Does anyone have VODs of JD right now, or are they super hard to find because:
1. nobody casts them
2. not sure what his ID is?
