One of the resident Koreans here do a [proper write up please ^_^
I'll post what I know, since I guess this is a pretty empty thread without it. I haven't done any research or anything, this is just what I get from skimming Korean forums now and then.
Ok, so the KeSPA owns the rights to who gets to broadcast the games of the Pro-League on television. Recently, they sold the rights to some company (I forgot exactly, I think they are the Estro team sponsor's mother company) for around 1.7 million USD over 3 years.
The controversy here is that OGN and MBCGame must pay that company if they wish to broadcast the Pro-League, which they pretty much plan, produce, and administrate by themselves in the first place. In other words, it makes no fucking sense.
I'm under the impression that OGN and MBCGame haven't exactly decided to buy the rights to broadcast the pro-league at this moment, so I have no idea what will be up for the 2007 season.

Hrm, how much of the proleague does KeSPA have the right to? Can't OGN/MBCGame just make a similar league, perhaps under a different name?

Isn't that how it usually works in sports?
Apart from KeSPA selling the rights to some random company (which doesn't own a TV channel, if I understood correctly) that is.
But TV channels never have the rights to air sports in the first place. Them paying for those rights is how a sport can finance itself mostly. They get their money back from advertisement.
And of course the TV channels are the ones who do most of the work.

well the things is tv channels don't only air it in the case of sc, but they are also the tournament hosts themselves. it's not like in for example football where they pay for the rights to use footage from tv cameras in the stadium

A lot of korean fans are complaining about this issue. KeSPA wants to make profit from what the cable stations made. I hear they are in charge of getting the sponsors for the league but then again, SKY was sponsoring proleague and both starleague for very long time and I doubt the cable stations would have any problem getting sponsors. So pretty much all they are doing is getting one 'referee' guy to show up, join and ob the game and when theres disconnect or the player types 'pppppp(pause)' he asks why and resumes game.....
