Looks like SSL 11 is (hopefully) around the corner, new announcement about the preliminary qualifying tournament:
- SBENU is the sponsor. - OGN is once again the organizer, along with SonicTV. - The qualifying tournament will consist of 128 players. - Anyone can participate (pros, ex-pros, semi-pros). - It will be an online tournament. - Signing up for a spot requires verification of identify. They specifically say that you will be disqualified if you use someone else's identity to sign up for multiple slots. I think this is to prevent people from rigging their own wins by playing against their own fake identity. - Sign-ups from Mar 10-13 - Players must turn their web cams on so that referees/organizers can access them. Presumably this is to minimize shenanigans. - All matches are BO3s. - Map pool: Circuit Breaker, La Mancha, All Or Nothing (SBENU) - RO128 begins Mar 14 at 3PM - RO32, Finals, and Ranking Games begin on Mar 15 at 1PM - 1st~8th (!!) advance to the main tournament.

So does this mean SBENU is still the sole sponsor? I was really hoping the success of SSL10 would have netted Sonic some financial support, as well as the confirmation other businesses are taking a possible serious interest in the scene again. With the OGN brand attached, I was sure someone else would sign up. Or are these details specifically only for these qualifiers or something?
U know SBENU is all over the place, sponsoring LOL, Sudden Attack, running events and whatnot. Sonic clearly has enough cash to do it so suddenly stepping away from the central starleague theme and letting another company take the credit would seem kinda unwise.

I just thought he was still looking for further investment like with SSL9.

As Stratos said, Sonic is not some online shoe shop anymore where he has to take loans out to sponsor his tournaments. In fact, I would bet that sponsoring the SSL himself is a sound business decision at this point which will actually pay off financially.
- Anyone can participate (pros, ex-pros, semi-pros).
Was this the case last time as well?
No. He said he was going to this for a previous SSL (8 or 9, I don't remember), but that never happened. I was really excited for that back then and I am now too. This is the most important part of keeping Brood War running; new players.

Hmm but it was the case for ssl 10. by.Spire won back then.

Indeed, SSL 10 had a qualifying tournament as well. Two big differences in SSL 11:
1) 8 spots instead of 1 2) Pros allowed instead of only amateurs
With the large number of BW pros now streaming part-time on Afreeca, not all of them will automatically be seeded into the main tournament. I am guessing that the increase in the number of qualifying spots and the participation of pro players in the qualifiers has to do with the increase in the talent pool.
so, is there reason to believe the Qualification slots are not open to foreigners? Otherwise, this could be a tournament of major interest for a lot of guys.

Considering the sign-ups for the qualifier have already started, invited players must've been known by now, so they know not to sign up?
SSL 11 already? That came way sooner than expected, considering how long it took until SSL 10 was ready. But I guess it's because the collaboration between Sonic and OGN was already settled with the last season. Very nice, I'm looking forward to it.

It might also be that sonic was spending more time becoming a millionaire between SSL9 and 10 and now that he's set with his partnership with OGN its coming out faster than ever.

Ah okay, didn't know. One spot is not a lot. Did the qualifier get much attention?
Whoever mentioned about ToSsGirL, yes, she will play. I heard she has been practicing on smurf account in fish server. She might want to practice new map or other maps (besides FS) with clan members such as Fengzi, Zhanhun, sina, and me. Fengzi and Zhanhun are non-korean strong players in my clan.
For the additional information, SSL 12 will begin in Summer season. I will be participating that time. See ya

Very cool, thanks for sharing this.
Sounds like the qualified players, and potential participants, indeed have been notified or have been communicating with the organizers It will be interesting to see which mid-level progamers compete in this SSL 11 qualifier -- if we see some/many of the SSL 10 participants competing, I imagine that'd be an indication of their not being granted automatic berths by the organizers (i.e. being pushed out to make room for non-SSL 10 players like Bisu, EffOrt, Sea, Pusan, Rock, etc)

I can request to Sonic about that. I have some abilities ^^
But I would like to see how many people are wanting it. Need a survey to be done.

The SSL 10 preliminaries weren't even streamed, so it'd be interesting to see if this gets streamed/casted...We basically just got the bracket
Logistically, with 128 players, that's 64 opening round Bo3 matches (assuming single elimination) all, by and large concurrently, or at least on the same afternoon. Not to mention all being done online, without a controlled studio environment, so I really don't see a stream happening, except perhaps for the final few rounds
...
Unless Scan is referring to English casting of the SSL 11 main tournament itself?
If so...
Poll: Interested in an official English cast of SSL 11 by the organizers?
Yes (47)

For reference, the snipealot Twitch re-streams (in Korean) frequently saw 200-400 folks watching live, and Sayle's delayed English casts often saw 100+ viewers.
For a professionally produced "official" English live cast, I wouldn't be surprised if there were even more folks tuning in

Referring to clothes.
If you do have an inside contact, would it be possible to inquire about an English SSL 11 cast for the international audience?
Taking a glance at the Afreecan response, it looks like there are some comments noting the 128 first-come, first-serve sign-ups are unfair, something about it being too exclusive?
Then Sonic's team/staff ("moodongi") seems to have responded...
Perhaps some of our Korean experts can take a glance?

Apparently there is some controversy over the quality of players signed up. Some people think 8 spots is too many to give to amateurs.
How do they determine who remains in the main participant list? Does the previous SSL results even count, considering people like bisu and effort are automatically invited. Are amateurs (who were invited last round) like sea.kh and force[name] still invited or do they have to go through qualifiers again?

Np. There's a limited number of participants allowed and there's already controversy over that so I don't think anyone in their right mind would consider making an exception for someone who couldn't play in the actual tournament anyway.

He could possibly fly to korea if he qualifies. If a foreigner qualifies I'll even pay for half the plane ticket.
Just got off a very busy week (thesis week). I thought passing that and getting my Korean visa was great, then I saw this. Now I have a huge grin on my face
I know the players are going to up their game improve this season, but I have little faith Sbenu's marketing arm can top the commercials we saw last season.
And...the prelim qualifiers are done! Results as below
apparently the first is qualified for the main ssl11 ro32 event (dual tournament format) while the other 7 are in the "challenge league"? anyone can clarify what that is?
On March 15 2015 21:20 c3rberUs wrote: So 2 , 2 and 4 huh? Is this what it felt like pre-3/3/7?
Well, anyway. I'm going to root for these 8 players really hard.
Interesting how the number of Protoss players whittled down by the final 8
In the preliminary's Ro128 the race composition was 60 Protoss, 36 Terran, 32 Zerg, but by the Ro16, it was 6 Protoss, 5 Terran and 5 Zerg
It'll be interesting to see how 2nd through 7th duel it out -- it certainly doesn't sound like all top 8 will make it to the main (dual) tournament with this new "challenge league" announcement
Maybe an OSL-like offline preliminary (e.g. 2010 Korean Air OSL) where the bottom 7 compete against the bottom SSL 10 finishers (e.g. bottom 16) for ~15 spots before facing off against the top SSL 10 finishers (e.g. top 16)...

Sziky, don't even try because at 1st round of 128 player you will get your foreigner ass raped and instantly eliminated. Even American Korean Scan admits his noobness, and pussies to enter and instead chooses to cast, so why the heck you wanna try? Playing at fish doesn't make you that smart. By your logic ay korean tournament should have only like ~10 players and all the lesser players should not even participate. I think you've got a wrong idea why e-Sports exists. It is for fans who watch and cheer their favourites, not only to give $$$ for the best player out there. And if one likes competition, tournaments, playing the game, then why should he not participate?

Hello. I am not American. OMG.. I am sick of hearing that. Please :/ Once the studying is over, I am returning back to Korea.
In addition, I am preparing for SSL12 if you did not know.. I must be present to participate this Sbenu StarLeague. This is not an online tournament. I will be in Korea when SSL12 is starting. I am hoping the time matches. Please go read other forum's posts where I said I will be in it for Sbenu StarLeague Season 3 ^^. And why do you like to make up your own story that has to involve with others? It's not cool.

I doubt they can't determine which maps they gonna use. Their crew(company), especially Sonic wanted to try some new stuff but however as one korean mapper (who is author of Demian) stated that OGN didn't like to use new maps as far as he knows. And that new map "All Or Nothing" which was included in preliminary got so many issues. IMHO it is really imba and double gas at main favors Zerg, plus weird mineral and gas counts. You can check it out yourself by downloading it in TLPD and see the strangeness. Maybe now they're testing it and want to use modified version. However, you need at least 3 more maps to select. I think maps which were used in KSL - "Avalon" and especially "Demian" - are pretty safe choices, because they're at least used in league.
Just speculation at this point, but it's quite possible something SSL11-related is happening today -- most of the Afreeca streamers are offline, apparently for a shoot/filming in Yongsan, Seoul, i.e. also the site of the OGN studio/stadium. Some tournament planning and promotional video/pictures, perhaps?
Pure speculation on my part -- Out of all these names, only Minam competed in the online preliminary (he came in second), so perhaps it makes sense if they knew they had been assured a spot...
There were rumors of SSL prize money not being distributed to the players, but the truth was that everyone got their money. The problems had to do with the players income tax being applied to the players at a much higher rate than it should have been because SonicTV didn't take advantage of all tax deductions. This apparently has been corrected since the last SSL.

if its anything like last season then Ro32 onwards will be offline with Ro32 played in the Sonic studio and Ro16 through Semis at the Old OGN studio(with full TV broadcast by OGN) and the finals at a big venue.
Sonic has stated that SSL11 is not far away multiple times in the past week on his facebook / afreeca channel. His last message:
We will make an announcement with the press soon. It's really almost here, get ready to be overjoyed. Compared to SSL10, the invited lineup with be so much better, so get ready! I'm actively supporting / helping it to be absolutely amazing. Everyone Hwaiting!
HiyA says he just came back from profile filming (guessing it's for intro videos and stuff), then some players went to go eat/drink while HiyA came home to stream.
The names below are people he personally met at the shoot, and does not include all the participants. He was in the 10:00 time slot and others were at 12:30 and other time slots. After SBENU SL ends, HungryApp league will start right after.
He also responds to a question from the chat with: "As far as I know, NaDa won't be playing."
Someone asked about Hwasin and Hiya said that unless Sonic goes insane, he will never invite Hwasin.

Good idea -- maybe when Sonic announces things formally, which I reckon will be any moment now.
I'm surprised Sonic/SBENU's market/PR department has been so inept. I would have thought they would be building the anticipation for weeks leading up to the competition -- free press and brand advertising... Enable some word of mouth and momentum, but instead, it looks like they'll announce it at the start of play.
I think the same thing happened during the recent SC2 events... nary a word until competition commences.
