so what happened last week is that AlexoundOS and I basically migrated the snipealot streams from his local machine to a cloud host in Singapore (basically closest location to South Korea that will allow for us to use a lot of bandwidth without having to spend that much). Streams have been quite stable so far on it, as the viewers shouldn't have seen any hiccups during the migrations. We also have a backup server in Amsterdam should any terrible thing go wrong to the Singapore host (Singapore had a DDOS attack last week, which was hilarious). The Amsterdam server hasn't been fully configured yet (it's just a matter of duplicating the Singapore server configuration and having good routing to afreeca) but that will be worked on so we have a backup solution.
So, what does that mean? At the moment, we still will have LQ streams as before but the connections to afreeca should be better than was previously before. We will have to wait until Snipealot comes back to South Korea to save BW. That also means that I am currently paying for the servers, which doesn't cost that much for me so I wouldn't worry too much about the costs of keeping the streams up.
As for the actual streams: Some people have been asking why there is a green screen on the stream. To fix that, just switch the quality option to High instead of source to fix that.
excellent work many thanks you guys & alexoundos/medry/comrad etc kept snipealot channels running so that the foreign community could still enjoy afreeca live!
I'm curious if everyone can run the !online command? Or is it only moderators?
And is the !online script search specifically for Afreeca usernames, or if there is another boolean? I'm interested in how it determines which user is streaming at the moment

Currently it's only for moderators, as only moderators can put players, so running !online by non-moderator is pretty useless. But there is !isbjon command that is available for everybody. !isbjon works by checking if the current BJ (basically how afreeca streamers are called by) is on. Reason why we have this is that sometimes Afreeca stops sending packets to our server to which we then start playing dummy videos while we wait for Afreeca to start sending packets again. making !isBisuonline is a bit of a hassle because then we have to make one for every streamer (there's a lot)

We will be performing an emergency software upgrade on our Singapore 1 Core Routers.
Expected Impact:
There may be several brief periods lasting 1-3 minutes of latency and packet loss as traffic is routed off of the core router being update and when it returns to service.
Approximately 30 minutes prior to starting any work, we will post and update our progress on the www.digitaloceanstatus.com website.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact support.
Thanks, DigitalOcean Networking Team.

snipealot2 has been unbanned so the channels will come back shortly. If anyone sees anything illegal being restreamed - even anything you think MIGHT be illegal - notify a mod as soon as possible so we can get it off the channel.

Wow, how much is the service costing presently? Is it largely being paid for by Twitch advertising?
The video on all of the snipe streams freeze for me after a few seconds in. What happens is the video stops and stutters, basically displaying the last 2 frames over and over while the audio continues as normal. Only snipe2 on high or lower settings works normally.

Currently auto-ads works only on streamer change. There is no detection of lobby screen or whatever. But the manual !commercial command still persists, so mods can freely use it.
The manual !commercial command doesn't work because only the streamers chat user (i.e. snipealot2 only on snipealot2) can run commercials using the .commercial command. At least this was the case before but it might have changed.

!commercial command doesn't use ".commercial" chat command
Mods should have access to the stream dashboard from there they can run commercials (I used to do this way back when the entire streaming setup was started and we didn't have scripts to control the stream)

Likely not unless it was a premium VPN with "guaranteed" international traffic. The big problem with afreeca lies with the fact that the traffic in and out of Korea gets congested. A local VPN won't help if it's international connection goes to shite.
Currently there is a problem with accessing afreeca streams. It seems that afreeca changed something. It fails with "error: Failed to parse playlist: Missing #EXTM3U header" error. Maybe it's just a temporary issue on afreeca side maybe not. Anybody with android phone can test whether mobile streams work at all at the moment or not.

Uhh, it's due to the way that we stream it. sometimes it should work if there is enough viewers so the quality options gets enabled of which it would then work, otherwise you're out of luck. I could take a look into it in more details .
Afreeca changed something in their website layout/code. I asked chrippa (main developer of livestreamer from Sweden) to investigate the issue and he quickly made a fix to livestreamer's code. Thanks to chrippa that we can watch restreams.

Thanks for the fast response and resolution! It was very difficult watching the extremely laggy Afreeca player stream
I noticed Afreeca updates frequently (every few weeks), so I'm glad those prior changes haven't affected the streams...until now
Heads up, looks like Mind's restreaming the world cup. You might want to keep an eye on things while the world cup is on so twitch doesn't take the streams down again.

Please take off mind. We're not dealing with another DMCA takedown again
to all snipe mods + privileged people, do not allow any WC restreams. If there are no other streamers atm, just turn the channel off
I have reset all the stream keys on snipe1 through 4 in anticipation of the world cup. I'm leaving for france on saturday so I won't be able to deal with any DMCA takedowns that might happen.
Hopefully xkcd and alexoundos can go to alternates (temp_snipe) channels for a week to test the waters.
Mind, Pure, Mini and I didn't even see who it was on Snipealot1 but that's 4 different players re-streaming the World Cup and the first game hasn't kicked of yet. I think this precaution is necessary.

can you pm alex or me with the keys? We'll update the bots after WC is over and just use temp channels for now
Either me or Alex will put on the Temp channels when we can and we'll use those for the WC then after WC switch back. Also updated the OP for mods to take note of this. Main channels should not go up unless it's a tourney that we can at least take down after it's over.
Ok, all the main channels have been killed (Don't try to restart them ). Just waiting on Alex to restart the temp channels (I believe he runs them from his local machine). If you have his personal contact, let him know
Currently I'm 800km from my home without laptop, without any stream keys, etc. Temp channels can run on the same server. amazingxkcd, you need to replace snipealot stream keys and twitch channels in the settings file and start bots. I'm not 100% sure, but most likely temp snip keys are already in the settings file, but the corresponding lines are commented. Make server backup before doing changes.

Mine doesn't work it closes after saying "found matching plugin afreecatv for URL"
Hm, we can all just camp the 24/7 BW VOD stream. Also, the current snipe streams are going to keep the quality? (prior to the worldcup thing) because I feel they are unwatchable sometimes since you left Korea. (for instance if the player is fast, half the video is blurry for the duration of the game)
#temp_snip2 is already banned, also chatting is not allowed for all bots for some period of time so use irc.quakenet.org server to control the remaining channels
Can I be given acess to the temp streams Dashboard so I can make videos (I assume thats possible). They will be low Quality and I hope to be able to make/find better quality ones latter through mysterous means. But for now it would be good to just get videos up regardless fo quality.
edit: Bloody shuttles watching World Cup. That's all the pretense I need to highjack temp_snip4 for my own purposes.

There should be no issues at all with creating new channels and just setting the streams to the new channels' stream keys. However repeated DMCA offenses from the same IP, creating new channels etc. will probably end up in an IP ban. This might in turn retroactively ban the main snipe channels that are offline for now.

The absolute worst case scenario would be that we would have to migrate the bots and stream setup to another host (which takes some time to do but it's doable).

During the day, two Twitch channels suffices, but when it comes to the evenings when the pro's stream, it's challenging to select only two out of a dozen possibilities -- e.g. last night when Bisu, Hero, Killer, Ssak, Sea, Mong, Mind, Icarus, Pusan and others were all on simultaneously The only saving grace were the extended breaks -- e.g. Mong eating take-out meals, Bisu thanking his balloon donors, Sea surfing the web for an hour (!) between every match -- such that the streams could be cycled back and forth

Twitch enables quality options by default on the main snipe channels when we get enough viewers watching, meaning that twitch renders in different quality meaning that we get stable streams. Also note that there might be some congestion in internet traffic from Korea to Singapore and from Singapore to you.

We need to look after channel 4 because it is so precious now. But more worryingly the combination of me not been able to export any videos to Twitch and temp_snip1 getting banned means we have lost all of the videos of recent events that where on that channel. Sonic will upload his videos at some point to save us.
Our lone stream on snip 4 is exhibiting terrible distortion every few seconds. Would someone mind looking into things?
For the moment, we can't seem to connect to Afreeca at all, with dummy videos re-cycling. There is no distortion with the dummy videos, so I suspect it's Afreeca mobile stream related
It started just in the last 30 minutes (~Tuesday July 8 4pm KST)
I tried a restartstream, then later a restartbot, but alas, still the same. Here are a few screen shots

Do note that this requires afreeca to use a CDN with nodes outside of Korea. If it's Korea-only then we're back to square one ^^
Afreeca has enhanced the mobile stream,Increase the resolution and bitrate of the stream to 800*600@1000k, but the bitrate is too low, only 1000k,the video is very unclear. If they can change the video resolution to 640*480 @1000k will clear a lot, but also more suitable for mobile phone watch. Is there someone speak korean can give afreeca some advice? We will be upgrading the software on our core routers to ensure added stability to the region.
Expected Impact:
There may be several brief periods of latency lasting 1-3 minutes each as we take a core router out of service, upgrade it and return it to service. We have full redundancy in this area and will only be doing 1 at a time to ensure full up time as the work is completed. We have tested the upgrade in our labs and consider it to be low risk.
Resolution:
Our analysis of recent outages in other regions has identified several software bugs. We are proactively updating our core routers to ensure increased stability and reliability of SGP1.
Approximately 30 minutes prior to starting any work, we will post and update our progress on the www.digitaloceanstatus.com website and keep it updated with our progress.
If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact support.
Afreeca is recruiting for an office in LA and Taiwan. Very interesting but we'll have to see if they are ready to implement the changes needed to actually go global. One of the first things they would have to do would be to make their HTML5 web player standard and usable for ALL player streams. Most people do NOT want to download a proprietary player + ms silverlight.
Billing for Month of August was $10.22. We had an outage that probably kept the costs down. If need be, we'll be planning to upgrade our server to a higher tier (which costs more money :/).

If they go global, then will they have CDNs for the korean streams? that's my biggest question cause if so, then there's no need for us to rehost but if they don't, then we continue to restream it

Is there any updated guide how to do it somewhere? All guides I found are outdated and pictures are dead. Also I heard that I need an account which costs money to watch them.
comeback everybody to watch snipealot streams NOW (BISU and JANGBI restream running)
most streamers have a mobile HD stream now going no more distortions , only thing SOMETIMES that cant be fixed (on afreeca's end not snipealots end faulth) is an issue that causes afreeca signal to not get on twitch directly so to say so it might sometimes start the dummy video however streams are up 95% of the time

that's not our problem, that's just bad connection from afreeca to our server. Nothing we can do sadly about that

eh yea in better words what i mean to say nothing can be done bout it
it will still lag hardcore after a bit, but at the very least you don't need Silverlight plugin to watch streams
Quality is nice for me, just the non full screen is a bit smaller than twitch's restream, but hopefully the foreign viewers can contribute to the Afreeca player's viewer count.
Do you think TL can implement a system where the Afreeca stream name appears on the live stream side bar?

No buffer for me, replace snipealot with play.afreeca on the live streams side bar imo and show everyone the real BW viewer #s :3

well our livestreamer plugin is broken atm. We're waiting on Chirpa for a fix for that https://github.com/chrippa/livestreamer/issues/568 . On the positive side, Afreeca actually rolled out a flash player that doesn't need silverlight to be installed and has quite good quality + bitrate. (just do http://play.afreeca.com/'streamerid' to watch, it's looks good so far).
if people want a centralized place to discuss bw on twitch, i'm more than happy to make a brood war group chat for you all, just ask me for invite
we definitely should add the streams to the sidebar. Beeing able to watch afreeca 1:1 is great, but one of the greater merrits of snipealot was, that it gave people like a common viewing experience. If we start just watching all alone it's no improvement (;
That beeing said, i look forward to casting korean events via restreaming now. It gives me much more flexibility, it's very comfortable to use and the plethora of korean events might get better coverage. I really hope Sayle, for instance, picks up on that. This will improve stuff a lot for us im pretty sure :>

Yeah, buffer into gg moments are lame :p
oh...god...SSL10...without buffer into GG casts. Mind=Blown xD
Streams are back up, we just reverted our afreeca plugin in livestreamer (thanks to Alex for doing it before me ). the flashplayer that everyone was using this past week is the mobile streams, so it's still not desktop quality but at least Afreeca is getting there

Okay, can like the people who have control over the snipealot streams come together and agree on some basic rules and priorities when it comes to switching streams so that we can avoid future trainwrecks:
1. use Snipealot2 if there's a tournament going on. Otherwise, prioritize popular streamers of their respective races like Bisu and HiyA, etc. Snipealot2 has the most following and the chat is mostly used. If there's a tournament about to happen, switch to the event like 5 minutes before hand and move the previous priority streamer to snipealot3.
2. Snipealot3 should be seat #2: For example: If Bisu is streaming on snipe2 and LoveTV tournament is about to start. Switch snipealot3 to Bisu and then switch snipealot 2 to LoveTV. After LoveTV is over, switch Bisu from 3 back to 2, and then put someone else on snipealot3.
3. Before switch anything before/after an event occurs, SAY IN TWITCH CHAT what is about to happen so viewers and other mods don't get confused and to avoid trainwrecks. Say "LoveTV is starting in 5 minutes, moving Bisu to snipealot3 and switching this stream to LoveTV. If you want to watch Bisu, switch to snipealot3."
Agreed?
Oh and someone get the snipealot LoveTV Rebroadcasts from the Twitch VODs and upload them to YouTube please.

1. People should be following all streams anyways. or just use multitwitch. Mods would have to be the ones to notify people of events; me Snipe nor Alex aren't watching the streams 24/7.
2. Fair enough, but if bisu is already on snipe3, just leave him there. the viewer counts should already enable the quality options
3. That's up to active mods to stay in touch with TL and the upcoming events
anyone can download vods and re-upload them. Stratos has been doing the brunt of that work, you can help him out

Yeah, I have so much time on my hands because I totally haven't done ANYTHING AT ALL this week for Brood War.
It's not like I'm fucking writing a Power Rank for October 2014 or anything. :p
Why do events have to be on snipe2? I hate it to fuck with viewers, especially since only a small minority is in chat and reads mod notes anyway. If 200 people are watching bisu on snipe2, 150 will have no clue what happened when you switch away. Additionaly, they can watch events as good on snipe3/4/1 since viewers mostly use TL to look for streams and then see the events on the sidebar. The snipe2 rule was back then when we were more limited with streams. On a different note, we have awesome mods like kntheo who most of the time only care for their prefered race and don't check other streams as often so we get three terrans and leto on the last one.

this may not be a good idea in the long run
exacly the outcome of this change is unwanted : '' its Twitch chats that really enabled the social interaction and sense of community'' it was easy accessible for everyone now snipealot channels are depleting losing a foreign community instead of building up a community
Holy shit did someone see that Bisu game vs 7000won? Bisu behind goes for a backstab, then basetrade. 7000won escapes a probe and builds a nex in Bisu's base. Bisu comes back and with incredible micro destoys 7000's army despite the low ground. But at the very last second; 7000won was able to produce a dt and Bisu doesn't have an obs and has to gg. What an epic game.

I have noticed that Movie is never being streamed on snipealot..like seriously never..is there any reason for this? Since he is a protoss boss, could we sometime get to watch his streams also?
Anyways, thanks to the people that is managing this stream. Great work keeping BW alive

i like how the chinese nickname for Movie is "Teacher Jin"
I'm thinking we should add a few more moderators to the channels, if we have some more volunteers
I'm largely the only one online during (my) waking hours, while nnspd is the only mod online during his waking hours. Channels are still alive and well, even when Bisu isn't online , so we'd benefit from some more volunteers
Looks like Afreeca is doing some sort of site wide maintenance for a couple of hours (loading up the afreeca flash player mentions this). im taking down snipe streams till afreeca channels start broadcasting again on their website (meaning that we can restream then).
Happy 2015! streams are still going well (I don't think it's necessary to make new thread for change in date and if a mod could change it that would be greatly appreciated).
Over the last 2 weeks, users have been commenting on sound being dropped while video is fine.
The quick fix is to have a mod do a !restartbot command then a !setplayer command to reset the player. Let us know if any more problems occurs.
tempsnip1 only got a 24 hour ban for nongaming content (and stream keys got reset). waiting on Alexound to log into the twitch account to see the new stream key then it'll be back to normal
Those BJs that use MPEGTS video container (instead of FLV) may work unstably. It's a workaround that tries to tune for MPEGTS input after a failed attempt with FLV.
On April 18 2015 01:26 DiMiaN wrote: Is it that expensive? I can sure help with server costs but that seems way too much.
biggest issue is the korean VPS providers are stingy and will not deal with foreign clients (we already tried this before). We can maybe get 100gb download/upload before they completely jack up the prices to that $2000+ range and even then they'll stop business with us because they don't want to support that heavy bandwidth usage outside of korea. Do note that we're already consuming 2TB a month on average for our download and upload (each stream takes 500GB) so we're already pushing out current plan to the limit (which is cheap, but the point still stays)
What are the commands where you can vote to change the stream to another stream? I have no idea how the bot works, and it frequently idles on people who arent gaming and just sit there singing for 6+ hours (exaggerating for effect).
Question: When Nada streams, he does this Hunters sudden death thing and keeps pausing and typing stuff sometimes in game. Is there a mini game or something. What's he doing?
Snipealot2 is back up. Snipe did a password recovery on it which changed the stream key, causing the bot to not be able to connect to twitch. I got that fixed so we're gucci
I don't know what it is about the coding, but it seems from every-time I try to watch snipe past broadcasts there is something setup such that the stream wants to go back to old SSL broadcasts or a broadcast of some guy I don't recognize playing ZvT.
There also seem to be a related stopping/starting issue that causes broadcasts to be split up into tons of tiny pieces. It looks like EffOrt was on for 2 hours today...but there are 8 separate VODs.
I'm sure there is a reason for this defaulting back to certain broadcasts, but whatever the goal was it definitely isn't working. It would be wonderful if that part could be fixed, or barring that, outright removed. If EffOrt is streaming, it ought to stay on EffOrt until voters decide otherwise.

snipebots swtich to VOD when the server loses connection to Afreeca for more than 5 seconds. Basically, blame afreeca/lag/dropped connectivity

Why not just remove that autoswitch, given how droppy the connection is. If it goes "dark" and people are there they can initiate a vote to change stream.
Guess I don't see any real benefit to switching to VOD.
