After a beta channel on west garnered enough interest, we at teamliquid have decided to open up a permanent home for our forum members. Here you will be able to game with your fellow forum members in a relaxed environment.
The channel will be moderated with a bot, and has an admin team being set up. The leader of this admin team will be FakeSteve, and he will be recruiting people to help make this channel free from people who ruin fun. We are currently looking for people in Asia, Europe, and North America who are mannered, known, and mature enough to help moderate. Please PM FakeSteve[TPR] if you wish to do so.

I think kicking people out for 900 idle seconds is too much. You're forced to write something even though you might not have anything to say or just watching people having conversation. It should be changed to at least 30 minutes or a hour. It's not like you often see channel packed with 40 people anyway. It's discouraging some people from frequenting tl-west.

Same here, I've only played a couple of 1v1s there, most of the games I've played have been far more fun.

Some good players like Midian or Testie or Drone go there for like once or twice, but they don't really get much out of it beside bits of fun(ppl there are not that skilled see...) And after they leave TL channal to join their own perspective clan channals, the TL channal will die out as more and more people drift out of it.

Yeah I kinda knew it would happen once they put the bot in. Not a big deal really, fun while it "lasted." But I think the anti-idle bot was just a retarded idea. Sorry if some people couldnt come in at peak hours but jeez, its like its obvious that once you stop letting people idle they wont bother sitting in the channel ever unless other people go in it. X17 is pretty known for how dumb it is. I suppose you are new so you havent been around in the last 6 years. It might be a little different now, I dont go there often but it seems somewhat vacant when I do.

Biggest Change: Levelling up. Your points are no longer reset after each level-up until you reach level 6. This weakens the level-up bonus. Example of what would previously happen: Normal levelling, you reach level 4 after 10,000 + 15,000 + 30,000 = 55,000 points With bonus level-up, you reach level 4 after 10,000 + 30,000 = 40,000 points
So the bonus level-up was effectively giving you 15,000 free points! But in v2.9 it no longer has that effect: if you pick the bonus level-up at level 2 to jump to level 3, you will still have to earn the points to reach level 3 (at which point nothing happens because you're already level 3) before you can start earning points to reach level 4.
Furthermore, the points you need to reach each level has mostly been reduced. I'll use cumulative numbers for comparison:
v2.8 - v2.9 To get level 2: 10,000 - 10,000 To get level 3: 25,000 - 20,000 To get level 4: 55,000 - 50,000 To get level 5: 100,000 - 80,000 To get level 6: 160,000 - 140,000 To get level 7: 250,000 - 200,000
and then you get additional bonuses every: 100,000 - 75,000
Other Changes: - main has 9 minerals and both nats have 7 (previously 10 and 6) - the 1000 min/gas bonus now gives 12 workers as well - level-up sound effect now plays correctly (before there was no sound at all ) - level-up messages tell you to look for your bonus selector in the bottom-right - spawn point respawn moved a little farther away from the builder's hatch/CC/nexus, so that it is less likely to get stuck between buildings
Lastly, I figure people might be curious about how many points each unit is worth. Note that I CANNOT change these values in the map! Using Arsenal III, here are the point values of each Tier 1 unit as well as a Tier 2 and a Tier 3 unit:
Overlord: 200 pts (set of 1 = 200 pts) Zergling: 50 pts (set of 6 = 300 pts) Marine: 100 pts (set of 4 = 400 pts) Zealot: 200 pts (set of 2 = 400 pts) Firebat: 200 pts (set of 3 = 600 pts) Medic: 250 pts (set of 3 = 750 pts) Dragoon: 500 pts (set of 2 = 1000 pts) Hydralisk: 350 pts (set of 3 = 1050 pts)
Notice: you need to kill 200 zerglings or 20 dragoons to go from level 1 to 2. That's why, if you pick goons or hydras, you had better make sure you don't lose too many!
Vulture: 150 pts (set of 5 = 750 pts) Mutalisk: 600 pts (set of 4 = 2400 pts) Wraith: 800 pts (set of 4 = 3200 pts)
Notice: you need to kill 12 wraiths (9600 pts) and a bit to go from level 1 or 2 to level 2 or 3.
Reaver: 800 pts (set of 4 + 2 shuttles = 4000 pts) Carrier: 1900 pts (set of 3 = 5700 pts) Battlecruiser: 2400 pts (set of 3 = 7200 pts)
There was also one game where we had it won for sure, yet we didn't win . Hopefully no one saved it, because it was a horrible goback (literally!) on our part .

Bill refuses to turn his map into a boring, no-rush-5-minutes, newbie-friendly map.
New (but otherwise skilled) players lose for 2 reasons: 1. They do not know and fail to anticipate many of the strategies and tactics that we use. 2. Both teams are vulnerable right from the start (versus "no rush 5 minutes").
To make the map easier for newcomers, I would have to cut back in both of these areas which would make the game much less fun for experienced players.
Actually, new TMM players *do* have an option to keep themselves from being annihilated in the beginning: play defensively until the builder can defend himself. Additionally, before starting the game we can try to set up fair teams and dodge this issue altogether.
StarCraft is 100x worse than TMM when newbies play experts, and I think we are all very happy that Blizzard kept it that way. Honestly, if a game is NOT an autoloss for a new player versus an expert, then that game sucks.
That was just one of the ideas I gave. It doesn't have to be nr5 mins (and I actually said make peons invincible for 5 mins, you can still attack the other teams units/cannons).
The BEST suggestion I gave, though, was to put a 4th cannon in the mineral line. That way you have a little more defense against lings or bats in the mineral line being sneaked, especially if builder shows some decent peon micro to protect the cannon (which in turn protects the peons).
As it stands now, one of the microers spawns 2 cannons, while the other spawns one. Why not just make both players spawn 2 cannons?
ive played tons of TMM and the only problem developing is that its really difficult to level up the first time because the regulars are good enough now that the builder gets powerful fairly quickly

I've noticed this happening in games where both builders fast expand.
In games where one or both builders make units early on (e.g. to counter a fast expand) the level-ups come at a pretty good time.
Actually, I've been playing as an offensive builder recently and it seems to beat fast-expanding builders (e.g. I stopped a forge expo strat with 2 gate zeal, although we lost that game in the end T_T). So maybe fast expand strats will die out in the end.
Maybe I could lower level 2 from 10,000 pts to 9,000 pts to try to achieve a balance between the two? Thoughts?

It would make lings, zeals, and firebats less effective, while ranged units would still be pretty much just as powerful. I think this seems fair, given that dragoons and hydras are worth an incredible number of points.
I think I'll give it a shot and see what happens. If the games are less fun then I can always undo it later.
I think one good thing would be to change cannon placement. Stacking peons to defend cannons is really hard because they are out of mineral path.
I know lings are coming and i try to block, but builders are dumb and i cant move them or stack them because they get stuck with each other. So my request is to change the front cannon to in between the mineral line (like you do with a sunk as Z in 2v2 or w/e).
That would make harrasing funnier.
And level 3 (wraith etc) is just too strong imho. Wraiths need to start with 50 energy, so its not a cloack fest but the microer actually selecting when to claock, and when to save energy. The rest is fine i think.

It was definitely a team effort, though. It annoys me when people think they've lost and just stop trying, because then you miss out on some of the most satisfying (and surprising) SC games.
And yeah, I think I'm going to keep the map as-is for now .

Bump. Tried playing Twilight Struggle single player. Stopped after 30 minutes seeing as how my bases were slowly shrinking whenever I attacked =/. Need better unit combo, methinks.
Bill307, do you think it would be possible to make a TMM like map on a map like Luna or LT? With bigger unit choices for the micro players probably, since it will turn into a macro fest. What do you think?
Yeah, it's definitely possible. But it'd take time to recreate LT or Luna in a larger size (so that there is room to pick units and such), then copy over the triggers (which at least requires me to redo all the location info in the triggers).
But, would it really be that much more fun? There would be only one way to attack each person's base, for example: up the ramp. So there wouldn't be much incentive to play offensively .
By the way, a bunch of ppl and I are in op tl-west right now...!
Bill, take a map with two entrances to the main, like one of the newer style maps, although I can't think of one thats balanced right now (pioneer is the only one that comes to mind), and put the tmm flavor into that.

This way, if some of them don't go to the beacon by accident, you will notice it easily. - You get pinged 5 times when a bonus appears. - You get warned when you have only 1 life left. - At the start of the game, your view is centred on the suicide zealots and you are reminded to hotkey them.

Changes: o Bringing any of the special units into the play area (selectors, etc.) will kill them and all of your other units as well. o Improved most of the non-level-up bonus choices, since no one ever seemed to use them early on (unless they didn't know about the level-up bonus ). Now I think they are on-par with the level-up bonus even in the early stages of the game.

I used to play Terran, but I thought I'd try and go Zerg this time around. Anywho... I suck again. lol. My APM is averaging 49 atm, I cream the comp and I get slaughtered in 1v1 and 2v2 games (my battle.net record is 1-3 now). I could use a training partner if anyone's interested. For those who aren't aware, StarEdit thinks all the unit and building defaults are from patch 1.04 -_-;;. And so it reset all the units and buildings to 1.04. Some things, like goons having the same build time as zealots, have been wrong since before version 2.0 .
Anyway, I've restored all the unit and building properties back to 1.08.
Also, the infested terran bonus now gives you 8 infesteds.

Also, while working on TMM II (upgrades; comsats; bigger map ), I realized it's actually pretty easy to move the yellow player to the neutral (12th) player and then have 2 obs spots . I'm thinking of rearranging the cannons again, too. All stuff to do for TMM 3.9 I guess .
Changes: o There are now TWO(!!) observer spots. o The 2000 min/gas + 12 worker bonus now gives only 1200 min/gas. o Invincibility, mass attack, and mass retreat bonuses now show a countdown timer. o Mass retreat lasts twice as long.
I have NOT tested this map yet. Hopefully it does not suffer from the same no-cannons bug as v3.9 .
(by the way, I can't make the cannons start off as player 1 or 2, because those players are User Selectable race and so all their units and buildings will be removed at the start =/ )

Bot is down until I have power at my house. I don't know if anyone actually heard about it, but there was a big wind storm in washington state. I havent had power since thursday evening. I dont know how long it will be until I do have power, as a matter of fact. I think roughly 170000 customers are currently out of power. At the peak it was ~1.1 million. My parents (where I'm staying--I'm writing this from the library of a city I don't live in) live in one of the worst damaged areas, powerline wise. I'm hoping we have power wednesday, but realitistically it may not be until thursday or friday.

From what I've seen, Zerg only starts off with one Overlord, being the hero unit. I assumed this was because Zerg players would have a lot of trouble with the microers on the other team picking off their weaker Ov's at the start, making it impossible for the Z player to ever build up.

start an attack => invincibility for so long (it lasts a while beyond the counter) => half our troops dying. it's like casting a 20second stasis on half the troops while the other half just dies
in the last attack, choosing mass retreat caused a huge pileup at our nexus. my base design that made for awesomezorz unit production efficiency just led to everything being trapped around my nexus unable to get out.
suffice to say they was fighting our units one by one and destroying the whole infrastructure, while simultaneously having fun raping our expoes
i just think they're dumb things that would be considered ludicrous if blizzard included them in melee. TMM is a good skill-based game otherwise, but including those just makes it cheesy like so many other lame UMS

units going back got back fine, but units coming out either had to attack-move (which meant they were stalled by my units in my choke stopping to fire) or manually move (which got them raped anyway)
GrandInquisitor maybe you should plan your base layout better then If it's strong due to your base layout, try using a different one. Personally, I've never seen that bonus be worthwhile.
T_T i think i was 130+ psi, and that undoubtedly made a difference. coupled with the fact that they were attacking at the same time, and i think it's a pretty strong bonus regardless of base layout

oh come on gi give us some credit our use of those spells were sick, we planned it out and timed it - invincibility to mass retreat as soon as we saw you choose a hero (meaning you wouldn't be able to stop it)
if intentionally planned out (my microers chose units that could deal damage quickly in invincibility) and coupled with luck (your base layout, you not expecting it at all) i think it can be 'imbalanced,' but by themselves i doubt they can do that much damage (or at least not more than a pair of hero dark archons, danimoth, kerrigan, etc)
you're just complaining about losing that one game. i doubt you'll see someone pick those spells over the standard hero very often. if you had watched too, your microers wasted their own heroes that could have also done a lot more damage.
(and you weren't doing 10x better. i never pvp and so we were behind but not as badly as you'd like to think. both at one base, were we?)
Early on, the game was definitely not in favor of either team. The two macro'er (intrigue and GI) were roughly on equal playing field. GI's team had more of an advantage in terms of Zlot10Million being constantly in first place for points than GI's macro compared to AELLYN's macro. In the end, I think most of us got tired and intrigue's team made better use of the level bonuses.
But more importantly, it's one game... totally not worth complaining about. TMM acts two fold: to help improve micro and more importantly, to be a fun UMS. TMM is not a tool to measure skill, so try not to say we played 10 times worse than you.
If anything, I can comfortably say intrigue, geometry, and I lucked out in the end. GI and his team had blocked intrigue's attempts to expand and we realized that selecting to get a few heroes would not turn the game in our favor. So we settled to do invincibility at the end, attack, and hope for the best in our micro ability. But in my dumb, yet serendipitous choice, my civilian landed on the "mass retreat" ability and we actually won as a result.
Most TMM games don't even last that long for people to get "mass attack", "mass retreat", "invincibility". I would say Bill has done a very good job balancing the earlier bonuses. These late game bonuses, most people don't even reach (this game was my first time), so say less about the balance and just have fun with the abilities and the game itself.

Best part was how this was after the 1:30 game that ended when our side picked pure goon in a ZvZ and just took out the hatchery immediately. No dancing around, no maneuvering - just moving straight across the map and attacking the buildings.

All of these have now been fixed in TMM II v0.7 . By the way, I made scouts cost 250/125 and build in 70 time instead of 275/125 with 80 build time (for comparison, corsairs build in 40).
In addition, I believe I have fixed the comsat bonus and the invincibility bug .

Haha, I was wondering why it was 150 pool for the longest time.
I actually picked comsat as my 1st bonus twice and won both games . It's quite useful and makes enemy wraiths useless. Next game I got vessels vs zerg and we won again! NO MORE LEVEL UP BONUSES FOR ME!

I don't play much by way of 1v1, but we play lots of other games in TL-West which you are welcome to play, such as: BGH RW Random micro TMM and more recently, some Mini Starcraft (kind of imba, but it's fun anyway).

Gotta be able to chain supers into combos first =P. Chun Li is really annoying though. I was playing a guy who was quite good. He would kara-throw me repeatedly in the corner with Chun (i.e. cancel a kick into a throw giving him super gay cheater range with his throw =P). But he was cool to play against: he let me practice pulling off moves and combos before finishing me off .
In both versions, I increased the amount of resources the builders get for kills by 25%: 2/1 min/gas for every 30 pts, e.g. 1 dragoon gives 32/16 min/gas, and 1 BC gives 160/80 min/gas. I also fixed a small bug where you sometimes received less gas than you should have for your kills.
In the Hyper BGH version, the level ups are now at 6k, 12k, 30k, 48k, 84k, 120k, 156k, then every 45k (so you level up 25% faster than in the normal version).

1. The Progamers play each other on their training camps using Lan, they very rarely come to b.net unless its for a television show like IloveStar. 2. I'm not sure how it works, but you have to be a member for a while before you can make threads.

Op TL-West was a staple of the Foreign BW Community back in the day, right now until the (Potential) syncing of servers as Blizzard previously stated they are considering, many people have shown interest in bringing this community Hub back to life, and this time with people not just AFKing and idling. (LOL @ anyone who remembers that.)
