Another lesson that KESPA needs to learn from this is how the new bo7 format in PL is actually too biased against teams with no depth, i.e., the 'poorer' teams that could not afford to buy players to boost their line-up, e.g., OZ and MBC. When these teams don't perform it's natural for sponsors to drop out because they no longer get the exposure they wanted.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news [though im sure others have said this] but brood war is dead. It wont be around in a year. They've had difficulty finding sponsors for OSL/MSL for almost two years- if not two years.. Costs for maintaining a team are high, and even though sc2 isnt very popular in korea, it has major effects on the BW scene:

1) BW was already declining in popularity and it did drag away SOME viewers
2) Little to no future players are coming in, so an investment in bw is no longer long term
3) starcraft 2 is, uh, starcraft two. It's new, and with all those connotations: Passing of the old, inevitability, better prospects, etc.

Every time BW has had a hiccup, what has happened? sc2 players jump at it, yay, this will help our scene! I mean however deplorable that may be, its the mentality of the world looking in on brood war. When it has a slight issue, its not just a slight issue like back in the day, or even a catastrophe, its a nail in the coffin. The more people view BW as having an expiration date, the more people will move to sc2, which just exponentially ensures the death of the scene. More people leave, less viewers, less sponsors, less sponsors make people think bw is dieing and they leave. Repeat cycle.

There wont be new sponsors coming in, certainly nothing that can maintain the same level of salaries. Players will be cut, training houses will be curtailed massively, and players will give up. I said this in Flash' contract thread. And I'm really not here to say sc2 is better or whatever, so please dont warn me, I love both games. This is just the way it is IMO.

Where do you get the idea that no new players are coming onto the scene? And just because there is a sequel to a game, it doesn't mean that it will replace its predecessor.

BW is dying slowly, but I think it will last more than a year. And for a lot of people SC2 will never be a replacement.
Just look at the people trying out for courage/picked up. Its basically halved since last year.

The old bo5 format favoured teams with very few very strong players. bo7 is actually better for poorer teams.

If it helps, you can think about it in the extreme. If it was a bo1, the only teams who could compete would be the ones who could pay for Flash, Bisu, etc.

If it was a bo101, the salary gap between the players would significantly decrease, because players like Flash wouldn't single handedly win matches.

Right now Flash's salary is several times the salary of other players. As in, Flash's salary could pay for an entire team. I'm not saying he doesn't deserve it. I'm just pointing out how the previous bo5 system made it much harder for poorer teams.

If Jaedong retires from BW, I can definitely see him trying his hand at SC2 like several others who've gone before him. I just can't see him as someone that won't continue his pro-gaming career on some level or another. He's just too talented for that.

Most of his interviews talk about him wanting to devote himself to studying so I'm not seeing the logic in dedicating himself to yet another video game. While he's here and the money is good, it's solid, but his interviews suggest he (or maybe just his parents) want more for his life. I would think this is the end for JD progaming if he doesn't get picked up by another team, and maybe even the end if he's just frustrated by the process and sees this as a good time to devote himself to a career.

(I'm a big JD fan but that's why I read his interviews too )

Well he also had that recent interview saying he was going to switch when the time was right.

From what I gather of the Korean school system, it's pretty brutal. If you fall behind early, everyone will be clawing past you. It's hyper-competitive - not a good environment for a progamer (unless you're Flash, who can succeed at everything in life).

I hope along with many others that a sponsor pick up the combined teams, dropping a few of the too expensive players to free agency. I'd like the new team to be like:

Jinair Jets (main line up)

Jaedong (Ace)
Baby
Killer
Jaehoon
Tyson
Anytime
Midas

Free Agents

Sea
Hiya
Shine
Roro
Hyun
etc

You say that as if Flash is the only progamer with enough mental fortitude and determination to make it in education, it's not like Jaedong lacks those traits
and I would switch Midas with Sea haha

I'm a little confused. The topic says "disbanded", but the article implies they only lost their sponsors and were looking for new ones. That's a fairly significant difference, isn't it?
