Notice that the article stated that big business teams will survive. Big businesses can also afford to take on more risk and also have higher capital than small businesses. And I don't think anyone would doubt the fact that the global economy hurt smaller businesses far more than larger ones. I don't think the spirit of BW is dying one bit. I think this article is further evidence of how hard the global economy impacted Korea. If BW dies, it won't be that no one cared about it. It will be because businesses couldn't afford to sustain it. I think once the economy improves more BW teams will appear. But for the time being I don't see BW going anywhere.

I did do a casual Google search for news about Woongjin, and the only English news I could find was a small blurb that Woongjin and other companies reported a loss this year. However, I'm not very familiar with the Korean economy, and I hope someone who has better access to such information can shed light onto whether the economic theory is more correct.

In 2010 several teams were dissolved or merged. One was merged with CJ Entus due to the match fixing scandal, hite sparkyz. The other group, eSTRO, had IEG (International E-Sports Group) stop their sponsorship. Later on, IEG went to fund a Counter-Strike team instead (and apparently it's done quite well --> http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/ESTRO_(Clan) ). In 2011, we've now had several small business firms remove their sponsorship from teams. Remember, while Koreans do like to see performance, they also see sponsoring BW teams as an honor-based activity (as mentioned in the Match Fixing Scandal commentators VOD), and teams have retained their sponsorships in the past even when they weren't the best in the Proleague or individual leagues. This leads me to believe that they've removed their sponsorships for other circumstances, namely the economy. Remember that the US and Korean economies are heavily entwined as are their politics, alliances, and treatise. What affects the USA heavily will also affect Korea heavily. My point in mentioning all of this is that there is no action here that points to the decline of BW. After all, the following argument makes no sense: Premise: One BW team dissolves due to match fixing. Premise: One BW team dissolves due to sponsor switching to Counter-Strike Premise: Small businesses drop out funding for Brood War, but big businesses keep their sponsorships Therefore: Brood War is dying! Someone sound the alarm! The above argument is especially illogical when you throw in the fact that the Proleague finals attracted 20% of the next generation of youth. I think I should reiterate that BW isn't going anywhere.

With two teams now disbanding I really want to know where these players are going to go. I'm sure some are going to stick with BW, but I feel like not everyone is going to be able to find a home with how all this turns out, and even if most of their A teamers do, what will the rest do? Hopefully this isn't the end of too many nerd ballers dreams and they can continue somewhere.

the smallest "corporations" left so far are hwaseung and the air force. think it'll be one of those two. edit: with the recent controversies and probes regarding contractors for the korean military (bribery, book cooking etc etc) i wouldn't be surprised if nonessential budget allocations by the air force were audited and cut. just speculation on my part, but i think it's a significant possibility.

It could be a relative thing.

My guess (apart from WMF dropping out) is that it's STX. Either way, it's not a fun thing to predict.

If you look in the super market, you will find Woongjin Drinks and foods all around, same with CJ, i love their dumplings. SKT has teh be one of the biggest if not biggest Telecom company along with KT. Hwaseng? Big ass corporation too ACE is sponsored by the korean military STX is a large shipbuilding, constructing, energy, banking, and is also in Europe too So... Which one? Its gonna be a big surprise, maybe STX because they have not been performing so well
