Edit #3/Update: Game Chosun - "There are rumors saying that the PL finals in Shanghai is going to be cancelled due to the typhoon, but our reporters dispatched at the very location say that 'There is a lot of rain falling, but it is looking like the games will still proceed.'"
That's so lame D:, I guess I'll have some extra sleep, but I was kinda looking forward to this. Well played mother nature, I guess the lightning strike was a sign to go back to Korea.
I hope this is not a joke. I am dead tired right now and is using every last bit of my willpower to stay up for PL finals. Milkis see if the korean teams said anything over twitter

probably the bw gods wanted bw to stay in korea ><
He had to pay for his own ticket! Really sucks for him (and other travelling fans)... going to shanghai for PL finals and end up locked up in a hotel room.
Awwwww man I was really looking forward to this... had everything all prepared Ah wells, I hope everyone in the area is safe, looking forward to a new date to enjoy this epic final
Edit: Wait... is there even going to be a new date? T_T

Boxer and yellow probably cursing the typhoon or go to their respectively teams to have a chat or so . So i don't think they are in that kind of bad situation although i am not sure about the fans who paid everything just to go to china to watch proleague finals .
Any confirmation? Doesn't matter to me since i just woke up but people who stayed(are planning to) all night for this might wanna hit the bed without being worried that it's just a joke.
From digimouse from the LR thread (our Chinese resident)
other source suggests the finals games will go as normal but there will be no audiences, I'm trying to confirm this.
So I guess wait a while and see what is going on. Looks like a mess is going on. They already sold like 2,000 tickets and have the whole stage set-up to go, so it would really suck if they can't do it in China.
But a finals without fans would be so...so not the Grand Finals.
Can a mod or someone changed the title to put a question mark? I was gonna go to bed, but seeing as it might not be 100% concrete, I'll stay and see what happens.
SHANGHAI - Coastal regions in East China are bracing for the powerful Typhoon Muifa, which was expected to make landfall over East China's Zhejiang province on Saturday night or during the daytime on Sunday.
Muifa, the ninth typhoon to hit China this year, was about 745 km southeast of Zhejiang's Zhoushan city at 11 am on Friday, the Central Meteorological Administration said.
The administration issued its first "orange alert" - the second-highest emergency alert possible - for the summer typhoon season. That notification requires local officials to ready themselves to deal with any damage caused by the storm.
A couple posts on a thread I read said things like:
I guess they'll have to go back to Korea then...
Well, good thing I couldn't make it anyway, or else I'd be going mad right now
Typhoons like this are pretty normal in Shanghai. The PL finals are canceled because of this? That's a joke!
I feel sorry for the guys who planned big celebrations
Wow there's no way this is real
EDIT: Also, (in spite of the last comment? i guess it's not serious anyway) this is 100% real; the news is straight from the site of the Chinese TV station airing the PL finals.
MAN!!! I woke up a 3 AM to get hyped with the extra 2 hours... only to find out that the event is now cancelled??? WWWWWHHHHHHAAAATTTTT!!!! the typhoon is not even going to make impact with shanghai as much as before!!! NNOOO!!!!

They could still hold it in china, just delay it... maybe next weekend :/
How would that work, though? KT and SKT1 would have to pay to stay in China for an extra week? Also don't a lot of players, like Flash, become free agents in a day or two? A lot of players won't even have contracts with their team.

They could delay things, the players would get to vacantion/practice in china for a week, then finals next weekend and everyone flies back. STX masters could get rescheduled.
I doubt they'd want to move it to Korea after arranging this whole deal with China (and the fact that KeSPA really needs this expansion in order for bw to survive).
I guess they could play in a random room, and just broadcast it live. The venue is most likely cancelled, but the final could still be held in China... I guess?
On August 06 2011 16:08 phosphorylation wrote: they should just play it in the storm, audience or not...
Definitely not if you ask me. The whole event is for the fans.. And would it be GRAND FINALS without audience? Hell no.
And what if there is going to be power outage?!?!
Its better fir the fans to play with no audience than to CANCEL the event. The OP said the event is CANCELED. Unless the event can be rescheduled in the near future, the opportunity cost of simply broadcasting it live (In a secure building, whatever) and providing people who purchased tickets and who traveled all the way to Shanghai for the finals with some sort of alternative to the normal event will exceed that of postponing the finals until after the long storm and upsetting people who went out of their way for the final.
It was well advertised there would be weather conflicts this weekend, so there should be a backup plan.
Shanghai daily said all outdoor events have been cancelled or delayed, the only issue right now is:
1. Are we going to delay the player's contract terms, so we can keep them a small time longer? 2. Are we going to play by the rules and have the finals now, without an audience?

the event refers to the SPL in China, not SPL final.

Well, good point. Still would suck without any audience.
I'm curious about what will happen if it's not played out in time for contracts to be up as well. Also hoped to catch what Flash wanted to say after the games. This sucks even worse for those who flew out on their own. Hopefully there's an update on the alternate plan soon.
They should go ahead with it in an indoors venue. There would still be an audience, albeit a much smaller one because Kespa flew over many supporters and VIP guests from Korea. They've also arranged for a few hundred fans to watch this live in CGV cinemas in Korea.

Question did kespa had a plan b for this kind of situation ? and since you are saying a lots of fans who are waiting to watch this game cgv cinema and some importants vip and guests . I really do hope so they have an alternative ...

I'm guessing they must. They knew ahead of time that there might be weather issues. Even if the venue was held in Korea, they must have a contingent plan right???

Still nothing from Fomos or DES. I can imagine staff arguing with each in frustration other right now over at Shanghai, lol.

Phase 2: ship in Korean fans who were disgruntled that finals are not on home turf, ship Yellow back to Korea, all is sunshine and daisies.
but i don't get it first we got the pictures of stadium props being torn down and fomos kr than stating it that the show will go on . So what's the meanings of this PROLEAGUE ???????

Think of the people who flew from Korean and other nearby countries to Shanghai..

Hopefully if this ends up actually happening there will still be a crowd worthy of a grand finals It would suck if they play games and there are like 50 people there

Eh? DES just posted that there is rehearsal going on at Shanghai before the games start and that there is quite a large crowd surrounding the finals area.
Crowd surrounding the Shanghai Century Plaza finals area
Chinese T1 Bisu fans
So... It's looking like the finals are going to happen is my guess so far.
I hope it is on however, my girfriend agreed to watch it with me, and if she can sit through some koreans/chinese screaming about a computer game, she's a keeper.

So they removed most of the seats and most of the lighting, to reduce the risks of potential injuries ( you don't want a stage lamp to fall on you, those things hurt and give you skin burns) and the crowd can evacuate easier if they don't have to fall over a billion of chairs.

urg... this is taking a toll to my health... please dont disappoint!
Even if weather is calm (before the storm), there is no guarantee that it wouldn't just do a 180degree turn mid-game (what if we get a 45m TvT? or Fantasy decided its a good idea to play hide and seek with his last CC for 10 minutes?). They cant afford someone getting injured/stopping the matches mid-way because of weather.

Can kespa sue the organizer now ?
No, because it's their people they can decide what is safe for them or not based on the weather. Kespa is doing this to save their investments. The Chinese are just worried about the weather and want to make sure everything is safe. Even if a single person is injured it's not worth it. Before people say the Chinese don't give a fuck, remember there was a Final in Shanghai previously which was very successful, so successful that was the pure reason why they are doing it in Shanghai AGAIN...

Why don't you use your brain a bit and think of other potential reasons, such as scheduling conflicts of the rented arena, duration of the typhoon, accommodations for SKT and KT at Shanghai (5-star hotel anyone?) before you take the easy route and point fingers at the gov't. We are talking about 102mph winds that are bound to intensify as it hits the mainland with who knows how many casualties and how much money in damages, not a little light drizzle passing by overnight.
If the CCP wanted to block the Korean Wave, they don't need to bet on a timing of a typhoon to do so. Wake up.

No the typhoon is forcing it to be cancelled.
The weather is fine right now although it may get worse later. chinese gov't was apparently surprised by the number of people gathered.

At least the korean reporters are tweeting these kinds of sentiments
Who knows? In any case, they should just move the finals back to Korea.

possibly the chinese government. they have many reasons for not wanting foreign culture disseminating further in their country and also given the fact how they're against the mass internet/gaming culture in china.
similar to how the chinese government censored a lot of the korean wave

Haha, yea. Like, I know that's true in many cases, but use your brain a bit. Why would they host the tournament only to turn around and cancel it? herpderp.
Wake up.

Chinese gov't decides that the event shouldn't go on (unexpected size of crowd, weather forecast, or some other reason) -> contacts chinese contractors to refund the tickets etc. (initial newsflash about the event being cancelled) -> korean reporters/ogn wasn't quite given the message and continued with event preparation -> seeing this and the weather (only overcast), korean reporters tweeted that the event will definitely happen (sighs of relief at TL) -> ogn/kespa finds out that the chinese gov't is forcing the event to be delayed and cancelled and attempts to convince them otherwise (few minutes of confusion and possible "delays") -> this proves unsuccessful and OGN airs their official announcement of cancellation

Shouldn't they as a government at least introduce some sort of unused hall for the pro league finals to continue after all they ordered the cancellation of the event ? . I felt quite terrible for the organizers who paid for that venue to be held at and yet has to pay all the money despite not being able to show the game .

My guess on the timeline of events.
Can you tell me when exactly did the Chinese government come into this?
I think it's Kespa's fault for not having any contingencies given the obvious scenario of holding a massive outdoor event in the middle of one of the busiest metropolitan areas on the planet during typhoon season.
Like, even if it was a rescheduling, I think they could've and should've handled this a lot better than the frantic yes/no/maybe as we're all scrambling on all fours to figure out what the flying hell is going on.
In other news there's a massive storm here where I'm at as well - seems like the entire planet is pretty pissed tonight.

In real life koreans may have a reputation of being very mannered, korean netizens surprisingly fail to live up to that reputation. I believe the korean 4chan is even worse than our 4chan.

Have you not heard how some of these progamers are often abused and berated by so-called "fans"?
Korean netizens have the same terrible manners as any other ethnicity, maybe even worse in some cases.
Add that with the cultural xenophobia that exists between Chinese/Japanese/Koreans and it's a hodgepodge of racist hyperbole about the bastard Chinese ruining everything.

And the Korean netizens are mostly laughing at "KeSPA's fail" rather than bashing the Chinese government.
Honestly I think this is really a case of damned if you do, damned if you don't for the Chinese authorities there - what if the disastrous occurred and somebody got seriously injured, maimed, or killed as a result of letting the event go on?
Of course it would be "Those bastard Chinese should have never allowed the event to continue!"

Alright, but you sound super worked up about some people trying to place blame on the Chinese/the Chinese government. Those people will soon realize that there's no one really to blame, unless you want to blame the typhoon for striking on the day of the finals or KeSPA's apparently poor planning/handling of the situation.
But really, it was just a bunch of unfortunate events all colliding into each other at the same time. :|

Preparing contingency plans has to be the responsibility of the event organizer. After all, i'm sure when they decide to hold the events there, they had to get permission from the government and the clauses must have included that the event will be cancelled if there are dangerous circumstances such as typhoons.

There is going to be a finals. KESPA would lose their entire fanbase if they canceled the finals. That's like the NFL saying, 'You know what? Since there was a typhoon and we couldn't play tonight, we're canceling the Super Bowl and just gonna reward the title to no one.'
Does anyone know the exact date that the player contracts end? Since Flash is one of the players becoming a free agent, the finals would have to be held before that date, right?

KeSPA said they are sorry for having to cancle the finals , the Chinese goverment already warned KeSPA about the weather but KeSPA told the Chinese authorities that they cannot cancle the finals due to fans. Thats the only reason they were able to get this far, but since no one can confirm what happens to mother nature their only choice was having to cancle finals for the safety of everyone. The finals will commence ASAP in either Shanghai or back in Korea. Once again they appologise and will confirm ASAP.
Thanks pretty much it ^^ I dont mind if its held in Korea or Shanghai I just want to watch the SPL finals T_T

Tomorrow.
Kespa can postpone that too, right?
I don't think you can postpone contracts. When a contract is up, it's up. I would be shocked to see Flash to go to any other team, but there are a lot of other players who will be agents on KT/SKT1. I believe Best is going to be a FA, too.
The gist is that the chinese gov't is very adamant about the situation. Kespa attempted very hard to negotiate with them starting yesterday. They will talk furrther with the chinese gov't to establish the new date/location (whether in korea or china) as soon as possible..
fucking kespa. I didn't realize that they were already aware of this yesterday. very stupid of them to try to force through the event despite not being approved.

So what if a team like SKT1 offers Flash a huge offer and he takes it?
Does he play for SKT1 in the finals? :p
He wouldn't get to play because he's not on the PO roster but it means that no 99.9% one game win for KT.
Well we know what happened with jaedong when he went looking for another team... so I doubt flash would leave ktf considering how good he has it.

They were still approved to go ahead with the event. There was just a very high warning from the government but they decided to go because of the number of fans in attendance.

um, i also made a summary. in any case, his summary doesnt say anythign about the gov't approving them to go ahead with event within the last two days.

Oh man... Apparently the Chinese fans were confused at seeing the cancellation signboard notice and stood around for a while, wondering why the games weren't starting when there apparently wasn't a drop of rain in the air. Lots of the fans who came to Shanghai and paid for the trip out of their own pockets are really disappointed and can't believe that the finals were canceled due to the weather, when apparently it's a nice day outside in Shanghai.

I feel so bad for the Chinese fans.
We're a bunch of TLers at my apartment, we're just back from the venue, and there's no sign of typhoon whatsoever... We're just so disappointed, a few of us even flew from Beijing to see the finals.

Well, KT and SKT1 are the richest teams. Couple that with MBC Hero in disaster, STX wanting to trade everyone, and everything else going down, I wouldn't be shocked if both teams add come Monday.
Would be shocked if KT lost Flash or SKT1 lost Best, though. Only way Flash leaves KT is another team has built him a new wrist.
It doesn't work this way. Don't post misinformation. They're just going to release the list of players who qualify for Free Agency on Monday. Negotiations between players and teams end only in late August/early September.

The government cancelling completely voluntary private business that harms no one, at a whim of their finger, with complete disregard for the forgone commerce it will cause. I think no matter what way you look at it, the facts remain the same: in absence of the action government currently took, the finals wouldve happened as planned, without problems. As such, it necessarily follows that any arguments of guilt existing outside the choice of government action, must be incorrect.

it's probably the fault of kespa. they really should have checked with china once they knew there'd be a typhoon and made sure that it wouldn't be canceled. if there was a good chance of it being canceled, they should have preemptively canceled the shanghai excursion entirely, let people recoup their travel costs to a certain extent, not inconvenienced the players, coaches, and fans, and just held a more or less impromptu finals in busan or wherever.

Liability is implied by action. Absent action, the concept of liability is absurd, meaningless. Hence a completely neutral government stance could not imply existance of government liability towards the hypothesis in question. It must instead be assumed that the action related to incident at hand, must be looked at as the causal root of liability.

They really should have had a plan B, i was there, i flew from america (not only for this, but i am in shanghai for this, (staying in beijing)). I think the ONLY fault of kespa, is having absolutely no backup plan (an indoor venue they can move to, or something of that effect)

How about i put you as a position in kespa shoes organizing the said event everything was going right until the 5th that is 2 days before proleague finals and tell you that oh you should cancel your event because typhoon is going to come and tear off your stage . Seriously unless you kespa is president of china or what so ever do you think they can generate resources over a limited that is given to them . I don't get it you guys were saying as though kespa knew months a go that a freaking freak typhoon is going to hit them on the 5th ,6th and on the 7th . Nobody was prepared to face this situation and I can tell you even though they may have some plan b seriously in shanghai are there any alternatives that have extra indoor halls for their event and to rent in a such a short time ? I don't think so .
Don't blame kespa and stop blaming everyone no was in fault in this kind of situation.

Calm down man, no need to give off such a harsh tone.
And the Korean netizens are mostly laughing at "KeSPA's fail" rather than bashing the Chinese government.
Yeesh.
No offense intended, I'm not trying to incite anything. I'm just commenting on the phenomenon as it occurs on all sides. There's good and bad apples in every group, really.
Unfortunately the games were cancelled was also there and we were already talked about this while waitign still hoping the games would start if the typhoon struck and 5 ppl died because some projectors or other crap fell down from the stage the chinese government would be the one to blame... its only logical they cancelled :{ any responsible government woulda done so...
weather is still fine now tho at 11 pm... woulda been perfect for finals T_T
it's probably the fault of kespa. they really should have checked with china once they knew there'd be a typhoon and made sure that it wouldn't be canceled. if there was a good chance of it being canceled, they should have preemptively canceled the shanghai excursion entirely, let people recoup their travel costs to a certain extent, not inconvenienced the players, coaches, and fans, and just held a more or less impromptu finals in busan or wherever.
I think it's too hard to determine this kinda stuff in advance.. I've only heard about this typhoon coming to shanghai first about 2 days ago ... now im not sure if meteorological stations know this info sooner than the public does, but if they don't there is no way they coulda known...

True. You cant really predict natural phenomenon. So dont blame anyone.
I could blame KeSPA for not notifying fans of the warning from the government on the 5th (warning about incoming typhoon), but I'm not going to.
I could blame Chinese Government for cancelling an event due to typhoon, which did not affect the area at all, but I'm not going to.
I could blame KeSPA for picking Shanghai finals over the traditional GwangAnRi, giving 'fuck you' to many Korean fans, but I'm not going to.
In the end, I'm going to support SPL no matter what happened and happens. In the meanwhile, I'll just relax on my sofa and read fomos articles: main source that's killing BW atm: Blaming KeSPA and Chinese Government for above reasons, instead of showing support at hard times like this incident.

You can't blame KeSPA because they knew just as much as the public did in terms of cancellation. Nothing was going to be cancelled but there was a fair warning (code orange) that the public knew about. They didn't cancel because the fan turnout was so great and they knew rescheduling in shanghai again that year was a slim to none chance.
You can't blame the chinese government because if there is a possibility of one person getting injured due to the government not taking the right actions, it's not worth it. They can't read the typhoon's mind...
I'm sure it was held in shanghai with the best in mind to expand the popularity of esports. It's an unfortunate event that no one could predict so I don't think we can blame KeSPA at all..

I know it's not attacking me, and I do get your point. I just want to state few things:
KeSPA should have prepared better in this situation. It's not that I hate KeSPA for not making a backup plan in this particular situation; this has happened before in 2003. There was so much rain that they had to cancel/delay the finals. It's not their first time.
Usually public events aren't canceled until the rain actually falls, so you can also think (it depends on the person's perspective) that it was over-reaction by the Chinese government, especially with the train incident few weeks ago and Super Junior incident last year before the Korean Air Season 2 finals.
In the end, there are reasons to blame/not blame the organizations/government. I chose not to; I just think it was series of unfortunate events.

Yes - This was an attempt by KeSPA to prolong BW's life (especially after the MBC news, you can't blame them. Also their sponsors wanted it too ).
Though I agree I'm not sure how hard it would be to reserve another venue just in case (outdoor events are prone to this stuff). It should have been done when they planned to host it outside.

It didn't of course, just like 95% of the times when there's a typhoon alert in Shanghai. There wasn't even rain, just a little wind so you wouldn't feel too warm. It was simply perfect.

I wish you were one of the government officials to give the decision whether to cancel or not

I guess Kespa was really worried, that the gentle breeze might mess up Bisu's hair. lol

it wasn't kespa who made the pullout it was the chinese officials who were afraid a freaking freak typhoon that is going to land upon their beloved land and citizen .

Actually the typhoon was a big one but at the last minute it suddenly changed course and went north. Other parts of China that it hit and is hitting right now are suffering some serious damages. Just saw some footage today and holy shit.
Shanghai govt officials made the right call imo. It just sucked that PL finals got postponed because of it.

Will be announced tomorrow ^^
Hopefully they don't delay the announcement. They're having problems rescheduling because the 20th is SF PL Finals/Coach Lee's wedding and then 27th is STX Cup Finals.

Oh by the way guys this was the weather when they canceled the proleague finals yeah a huge typhoon is coming anyway. So lets cancel on a bright sunny day.
no speaky korean but what words i can pick out from google, possible location? Jangchung Gymnasium date still under discussion due to possible conflict with STX masters ? possible date of announcement: tomorrow the 9th

the article also states that the earliest date for the finals would be the 20th, but that is Coach Lee's wedding and also the finals for the special forces league, so it is difficult to have it on the 20th. In the next weekend, the 27th, is the date for STX Master Cup's final so kespa is in pretty big trouble picking a date on a weekend.
On August 09 2011 08:22 blueblimp wrote: Obviously the STX Master Cup's final should be moved, since teams don't take it seriously anyway. Dunno if that's possible however.
STX is unhappy with the performance of their team as it is, I don't think it would be a good idea to move the Cup final.
This month has been a real test for esports in Korea. If these issues (PL Finals, MBCGame, Fox sponsorship etc) aren't handled properly, I don't know if the industry can recover.

I actually really liked the way the organizers handled this unfortunate lose-lose situation.
yes, since they print out the Tshirt anyways. But there is no free T shit for VIPs weirdly enough.
HOLY FK I wasn't there when the games were meant to be play and I didn't want to be spoiled, so I minimized the BW tabs on the left and waited for the VODs on nevakes account. After 5 days, only JUST realized it was postphoned FMLFMLFMLFMLFML
