Hey TL, I'm going to buy BW soon at Wal-Mart or something. But, I'm not sure once I buy it, I can start playing online right away. Like, I can create an account and start playing right away right? (Also, can I have more then one account for free without buying more accounts?)

And, when I do start, are there any good tips on playing for a beginner? Like what race is the most fun to play, etc.

I'm around like a Gold-Plat Protoss in SC2. I love playing Zerg its so fun though ^^ But please answer some of my questions if you can!

Thanks,, Mooki.

(Sorry if this is in the wrong section)

You can start playing immidiately on any region once you input the CD-Key and install the game.

I would recommend doing some campaign first just to get a feel for the interface and the units.

BW lets you have as many accounts as you want as soon as you buy it, and that account can play on any server against anyone with no region locking.

Most fun to play is subjective, you're just going to have play all 3 races and see which one is the most fun for you.

Yes you can just create an account and begin playing. You may have to download some patches first but that is normal You can also create multiple usernames on one account (as many as you want).

Most people on TL start playing on one of two private servers, ICCup ( http://www.iccup.com/starcraft/sc_start.html ) or Fish (a more competitive Korean server). You can play on Battle.net too but I wouldn't recommend it.

You can't really say which race is the most fun to play since it really just comes down to preference. Liquipedia will be your friend for starting out ( http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft/Main_Page ). It gives a pretty good overview of BW builds and Strategy. If you have more questions just ask ^.^

This is a link to a guide for player switching from SC2 to BW. It's an in progress guide, but definitely a heeping helpful share of start. Written/video'd by one of the more prominent players in the scene outside of Korea.
SC is like sex. You should play often, but never too hard. And you should only try hard when it matters.

Just go ahead and play the campaign to get used with units macro micro mechanics etc.... it will be a lot harder then SC2 for sure but don't give up.
Play bnet for starter then after couple of weeks or 1-2 month i suggest iccup but you will just get crushed TT
Dont loose hope though, SC BW is the best game evah!

start with single player, play against computers, learn the basics. its completely irrelevant to SC2 and if you are gold/plat player, that equals lowest skill level in BW. dont be frustrated even if you don't win vs someone else in 6 months.. learning curve is steep and it will take a long time to learn.

best of luck!

You don't have to go all the way with BW. You can play just to know the units/basic tactics. Then you can stop(if you want) and finally enjoy the BW VoDs ^.^

All the troubles are worth it just for Live/VoD matches.

You can play on any public server with as many accounts as you want for free. Making a new account takes around 10 seconds. There are also free private servers like iccup, fish, etc...that have ladder systems implemented into them. The main server when you install the game (battle.net) doesn't have a ladder system. I would recommend you start playing on iccup (An above poster gave you a link). You will lose a lot of games at first, but you will move down the ranks and play with some new players. Once you learn the units and their hotkeys, I would be willing to help you improve from there. I specialize in studying the mechanics of the Protoss race, but can assist a low level player with any race.

Brood War zerg is awesomely fun to play once you get the hang of using mutalisks, lurkers, defilers.

When getting into online play, I would suggest finding some people on TL who are in the same position as you (i.e. SC2 players getting into BW) and practice with them. Also watch VODs with english commentary, check liquipedia and download some pro replays to learn build orders and stuff, watch the early Day[9] dailies where he covered BW games.

It's a good idea to try and practice a single matchup on a single map and once you get the hang of it, you can move on to others.

Either play protoss or terran until you start feeling you can beat comps AT LEAST 2v1, zerg is just too difficult a race to play good with in begining sorry to break it to you, you can mass a move everything at once, and you need to make subtle, yet deadly movements. Once u beat campaign, and then start beating comps 1v1 then 2v1 start playing on US west and playing people. then evenrtually work ur way to ICCup gl hf :D

Thanks for all the responses! I might play Terran. Not sure yet. I learn kinda fast but we'll see. Gonna mess with Z for sure though.

Actually, I feel like Protoss is far and away the most fun race to play in BW, especially if you're coming from BW. (This coming from someone who mains Zerg). Every matchup is fun and micro is strongly rewarded, but not 100% necessary for basic play. If you play Zerg or Terran there is a huge minimum level of micro/army control required just to be somewhat competitive. The mirror of ZvZ and TvT are incredibly difficult/frustrating for newer players, so I'd avoid those at first. PvP is very reminiscent of SC2 TvT. I agree though, play the single player campaigns (you can cheat for maybe the last level or two of each campaign, some of them are insanely tough).

The mechanics of the game are also different: you can't queue orders the same way, buildings are not paid for until their foundations are laid (sometimes leads to failed build commands), workers cannot be rallied to mine, and of course MBS and unlimited unit select are not options. This means one has to be very proficient with hotkeying/constantly creating new control groups. Rather than just adding units to ctrl+1 all game, you'll likely have to create another control group every 30 seconds or so on average to get up to C- level.

With all these warnings I will say its a really fun rewarding game.

Nice to see all these new players. And for choosing a race... THE ANSWERS YOU SEEK LIE WITHIN!
Why would I play sctoo when I can play BW?

Dont buy at wallmart, use the site g2play.com to buy your BW it's only 3.99€ and you receive your key in about 1 hour by email. Then you download the game on battle.net and voila.
I dont have any buisness with g2play but it's a serious and fast website, i bought many many games at their online store with no problem.

Im pretty sure ZvT and ZvP are regarded as the most fun matchups - at least in the latest polls in TL. As such, choosing Z for fun factor is the straight forward option. Yes ZvZ is debatable, however it is fast and full of action, while TvP tends to be a slow lumbering macro fest, discouraging to AdHd guys like a lot of starcraft players.
Aah thats the stuff..

Um, no offence but why? I honestly don't really trust sites like that, I'm in NA and I can't buy anything online. (That's just me though)

Also, do you think getting 'decent' at BW would help me a lot with SC2? I'm thinking about switching to Zerg but I'm not sure yet.

Thanks guys So nice!

Yes, if you can get to a point where you have decent mechanics in BW, then you should have a much easier time with SC2 mechanics.

However, you should play BW for BW. If your ultimate goal is to get better at SC2, then you're better off just playing SC2.
