Recent injuries of such amazing players as Flash and TLO are very deeply saddening, and make me review the whole premise of esports. I think we have a unique situation - a cultural phenomenon has risen of enormous importance in many people's lives, yet, it was never designed as such.

What I mean is: we play with keyboard and mouse. These input devices were not designed to be used in the intensive way we use them for gaming. And it's not just a kid's hobby anymore, it has become a serious sport that pushes to the limits of the human being.

So, it's probably time to think about redesigning the input devices for gaming, so that they do not cause injuries even after many years of dedicated effort. I know some would think this to be an exaggeration, but I expect at some point people to consider this issue.

It's all about having the right posture. There are guitarists who can move their fingers even faster, and on a ergonomically worse equipment.

Also, since Flash is a bit OCD (his ruler), it's not unlikely that he have put more strain on certain parts of his body than the other professional BW players, and if that "physical setup" that he always uses puts unnatural strain on some part of his hand or arm, it's very likely to lead to injuries. The normal player will play with a bad posture occasionally, but since they change posture so often, they don't put a strain on their muscles.

My opinion is that the APM-romanticizing culture of esports is preventing the devolopment of ergonomic input-methods and UIs. Managing an unergonomic UI is seen as a part of the sport. Effective macros and solutions such as the 12 button mouse Razer Naga need to encouraged and not seen as cheating. The more input-intensive tasks that can be automized -- automatic marine splitting, making qued production equal to unqued, etc -- the better for long-term ergonomics and the more sustainable SC becomes as a career choice. The alternative is this.

Don't worry guys...it's fate. Flash will replace his wrists, arms and brains with prosthetic ones, thus fully transforming to cyborg to terminator!

Wow he plays through the pain even knowing it could worsen his injury. Talk about hardcore.

They should not want/allow him to play. Health first...Just take a break, come back and dominate SC2.

I'd rather see him like oov than to ever see him play SC2. On a brighter note, if it doesn't heal, become the next oov and teach barracks or suny how to dominate finals.

I wish I could draw. I wanna draw: Splitting SCV at the beginning of the game, but instead of to mineral patches, to parts of Flash's arm/wrist/hand and repair it with the 50 minerals.

Glad to see he is getting this taken care of, can't believe I didn't read about this sooner. Hopefully he will be able to have a speedy recovery and get back to dominating.

I'll admit, despite my disdain for Flash, I'd rather not see him go.
His growth over the years was interesting to watch to say the least.

For a sport like professional starcraft, I'm actually surprised at the LACK of similar injuries among players. Plenty of SC players play for years without problems, and you rarely hear players withdraw for this reason. Yes, I know no one hear about B-teamers, but the percentage who has this problem among players who actually play in the PL/SLs is still quite slim.

That said, I do like your idea that automizing is good. However, the other side of the coin is that it likely can't apply to BW, because there could be issues with racial balance.

So I'm really chalking this one up to either this being a problem with Flash himself, or that his team really does over-work him so much to cause this injury.

IMO it's all about his posture. I'd rather see more education (perhaps make it mandatory?) for progamers geared towards proper posture and rsi prevention. There are many SC players who are faster and have been playing longer than Flash without these kinds of injuries. Though I have also read that some people might simply be more prone to these types of problems than others, similar to having a greater risk for heart disease and such.

I'd much rather have players educated on safety rather than have them dumb down the game.

I never understood this argument. The big reason why BW is so good is not because it's mechanically hard, but because since it is mechanically hard, you have to prioritize. In BW you can't do everything perfect in the same game. For instance, it's very easy to storm like Jangbi if you use like 5 hotkeys for your templars, but then you'll have to sacrifice other things. If you look at Flash, he's not known for being harrassive, but he have shown in many games that he can play like that too. Flash however have chosen to prioritize macro and unit positioning. Best is kind of the same. Seeing him use reavers is very rare, probably because he feels that he can't be the macro beast he is, when microing shuttle+reaver at the same time.

I dont really know flash besides what you eventually read here. But it's obvious that, when you play 12 hours a day, in the same posture, with the same movements and the same amazing speed, your muscles have to cramp sometimes. And when you are too addicted / pressured to stop playing, it will get stronger and stronger until the point of breakdown, which Flash obviously would hit in the near future without a break.

Ummmm, What makes SC so good to watch and play is because of the mechanical challenging. If everyone can do what the pros can do whats exactly is the point of having a "professional gaming"? One thing that makes BW soo great is how professional can multitasking, macro, micro and etc better than most of us.
