I think it will take a lot more time for people to accept games.
Games are more thought of as an addiction rather than a passion.
I tend to agree to that to a certain degree. I started starcraft as an addiction and not a passion.

Starcraft will never, ever, ever ever ever, EVER be an olympic sport. Ever!

Edit: You're right about Fifa, people wouldn't watch that but there is nothing in the real world like Starcraft, otherwise we Koreans would rule the world ^_^ Not only is baseball a sport, but it is the best one Also, golf is the hardest sport by far. Things that are judged like figure skating and gymnastics i dont consider sports however. our names are too similar =\

The Olympics are supposed to recognize great accomplishment in physical activity, not video games ;O Why not let monopoly become an olympics event? E-Sports has the WCG's, it's just like the olympics except is held every year. Let's support WCG's

A little research goes a long way.
The selection of which games will be part of the Olmpic Programme is handled by a commission of the same name.
his questionnaire will soon be submitted to the 28 Summer International Federations that will be asked to fill it out and return it to the IOC by 15 November 2004. In addition, and in order to widen the analysis to other sports that potentially could add to the quality and popularity of the programme, the IOC has decided to study further five Recognised Federations i.e. the International Golf Federation, the International Roller Sports Federation, the International Rugby Board, the World Karate Federation, and the World Squash Federation. These five federations will also be asked to respond to the questionnaire.
The IOC Programme Commission will then review the documents. A final decision on the composition of the Olympic programme of the 2012 Olympic Games will be made by the 117th IOC Session in July next year in Singapore.
So first of all it appears the consideration for new sports for Beijing in 2008 has already been made , considering they're looking at sports for the 2012 Olmpic Games right now.
They have made a list of 33 criteria a game will be evaluated on for consideration.
I consider this interesting enough to download the PDF file and compare Starcraft to the criteria:
1. History of the IF (international federation) and the date the competition was first organized under it. *** SC doesn't have an IF, and I don't think the two competing international games (CPL and WCG) would qualify as such****
2. # of times the game has been included in a bunch of stuff like Pan-American Games, All-African etc. etc. ***** 0 *****
3. Date of first and number of World Champions held ***** this will be the 4th WCG? *****
4. List of countries that have been in top 16 in last 4 world rankings (I think to make sure its broadly popular) *** uh.. i have no clue, someone go search the WCG history****
5. # of national federations **** maybe Korea has one but I don't think any nation has it this organized yet *****
6. irrelevant 7. # of national federations that took part in last world championship *** however many WCG national committees there were, if they count which I doubt *** 8. irrelevant
9. # of NF (national federations) that took part in last continental competitions *** 0 , we don't have formal contintent based competition ***
10. # of NF that correspond to Olympic Sport commitees that participated in WF. *** 0, even if WCG nationals sort of count they're not set up in same way as OSC's ****
11. steps we've taken for participation in Olmpic Sports (even as exhibition sport) *** 0 ****
12. spectator % of tickets sold at last 3 olympic games for that sport *** 0%.. keep in mind same list is used to re-evaluate existing sports ***
13. spectator attendance at past 3 olmpics *** 0, see above ***
14. media interest *** getting better here, but there is very little consistent media coverage outside Korea ***
15. written press coverage *** getting better too, but compared to say Rugby that has monthly magazines and such nothing good ***
16. quality of tv coverage at last olmpics *** not in it ***
17. year of creation of official IF website, this goes on a while.. number of visitors etc ** we don't have an official IF. ***
18. list of sponsors of the IF *** none ***
19. sale of television rights by IF *** none ***
20. athletes comittee existence ** we don't have one of these either! ***
21. gendar equity, number of participants from each gender in world championships *** I don't think a female has ever qualified for WCG, nor is there a seperate competition ***
22. presentation of sport, steps taken to ensure outcome as fair as possible ** hi Spain and Brazil WCG qualifiers ***
23. impact of the sport on the environment *** we're in good shape here yay! Since we just sit at home playing computer ***
24. IF's anti-doping tests done on atheletes *** 0 that I know of and we don't have an IF***
25. IF's financial status *** don't have one bla bla ***
26. strategic planning process. Existence of strategic planning for 2005/8. ** haha. yeah right ***
27. scope of development programmes in all 5 continents *** damn... at least we did good at the environment question ****
28. cost of new competition and training structures *** this should be ok, you just need a competition venue with enough electrical power and some comps ***
29. costs related to equipment and training venus *** not too bad, comps can be used by multiple players at such events ***
30. technology costs at Olympic Venus *** well that would be a large part of budget if sponsors didn't provide comps, which I'm sure they would for an official OG ***
31. security requirements and costs *** $25 hire someone's grandma who's probably in better physical shape than most gamers ****
32. costs and complexity of TV production *** we should be in good shape here. OGn and MBCGame do this already. You don't even need as many camera crews as most sports.
33. items not included in above criteria *** well this is rather open for debate. I'd like to say a new idea like e-sports would do be favorably here but since we got totally owned on the rest of the criteria questionaire I'd like to formally conclude THERE's NO CHANCE IN HELL FOR 2008 OR 2012!!***

You people are being way too chimerical.

olympics should be like this methinks: can you set a world record in whatever event or not? if not, then it should not be in. cause imo another tournament for soccer or curling or whatever the fuck is pointless. world records at least hold some value.

If trap shooting and can be an olympic sport then why not Starcraft....

WTF kind of a tradition is it anyway? It's nothing like it was originally intended to be. Things like Baseball and Basketball have no place in the olympics. Although I do agree that SC should not be an Olympic sport. I mean, if SC can be an olympic sport, then like, 5000 other games will start making a case that they should be sports. I mean, my point is, if e-gaming was in the Olympics, then why would they choose SC specifically? (OK, it's hugest at the professional gaming level, but still, why shouldn't some other games be on it) And if they do put more e-games into the olympics, I think it'll be kinda messed up, and could really ruin the Olympics (further).

I'd be quite content with a spin-off Olympics for e-sports like the Paralpympics. While WCG is an international event, the Paralympics are so much more organized. Some of the structures and rules the Olympic movement has set up that also applies to Paralympics would be important for taking competitive gaming to a new level. I'm thinking specifically of NationalInternational Committees that set standards for one.

Fuck this shit i want sc as olympic game ;/
