-Some Interesting Notes-
sAviOr's MSL dominance sAviOr has played in the last 5 MSL finals winning 3 of them. The only player to have accomplished a finer record is none other than the player sAviOr beat in Shinhan 3 OSL, NaDa. NaDa has played in 6 MSL finals winning 3 and getting 2nd in the other 3. The difference one may argue is that sAviOr plays very consistently and plays in 5 finals IN A ROW. Could this be the MSL where sAviOr plays in his 6th MSL final?
The Protoss Savior, the anti-sAviOr, Bisu Back in the Pringles 2 MSL Results and Standings, I said there may never be a Protoss dominance in the MSL. Traditionally Protoss have always struggled to have a heavy presence in any individual tournament. However, when Bisu trampled over sAviOr it no doubt gave hope to Protoss fans everywhere. Could this be the start of something new? Bruce Lee Toss, will you have an amazing career like Bruce Lee and have an early end? I hope not. <hr> <font size = 3><center>The Players</center></font> A big change in this MSL is that they have changed the format from a double elimination group 16 player to a giant 32 double elimination group. Pretty much the first stage of the game has just been doubled meaning twice the amount of players, and twice the amount of seeds.

Note: HwaSIn and Nal_rA were tied for 3rd at the last MSL. They will be just identified as seeds until further information is provided. Seeds #5-#8 still need to be confirmed. I might imagine they will take it based on KeSPA rank? Maybe, don't listen to me, I am chobo. <hr> <font size = 3><center>The Maps</center></font> Last seasons maps were Longinus 2 and Blitz X which were remakes of the previous season's maps. Desert Fox and Reverse Temple were introductory maps for Gom TV 1 MSL. Traditionally MSL will keep a map or two with some changes and introduce some new maps. They also share 1 map with OSL. However, this season they've gone for a big change and gotten 4 new maps. This was done to help keep the gameplay fresh rather than have repetitive games from last season. Good or bad here they are.
Many thanks to SonuvBob for updating us on the maps.
Gom TV Loki (곰 TV 로키) Symmetrical 2 player map that has a very easily securable gas natural but a really difficult to secure 3rd gas. This may help PvZ greatly and may encourage two base play rather than three base. There are also MANY routes to your enemy giving it a lovely and nostalgic Bifrost feel. I think this map is really brilliant and although it encourages two base macrofests, I feel it may also show some great tactical army management and flankings etc. + Show Spoiler +
Monty Hall (몬티홀) This map many of us are already familiar because it was introduced at the Racewars Superfight. Very interesting map that has 3 gas naturals for the 2 players. However all 3 of them are behind mineral walls that players will have to cheat through in order to scout or proxy their opponents. There are no mineral onlys and the map is flooded with 14 gases. + Show Spoiler +
Desperado (데스페라도) This 4 player map is taking a huge leap by having two gas geysers at the main. The natural however, lacks a gas. This may help encourage the Zerg to play less 3 gas and more 2 gas strategies. 3rd gases will be hard to secure. The center of the map has a Forte look to it. It was discussed on Fighter Forum that this map was supposed to be based off of Luna and will be essentially the macro map. You can see this clearly as the naturals are easily defended and the center of the map is large to encourage large army play. + Show Spoiler +
Python (파이썬) This 4 player map introduced with the 2007 Proleague Season 1 may also be another macrofest map. Gas natural is easily secure, 3rd gas is actually very difficult to obtain. So we're going to see a lot of two base macro play on this map I would think. It has a very Lost Temple feel to it, no? The 12-2-6-8 mains and the islands at 10 and 4. Except those islands are ramped and insanely hard to defend. As is the 1 and 7 islands. + Show Spoiler + <hr> <font size = 3><center>The Previews</center></font> You know how they do. Increased by twofold literally from last season. Rather than 4 double elimination groups of 4, we have 8 double elimination groups of 4. The players are selected into a group into a complicated process which is known as steal draft.
The Steal Draft The steal draft basically works like this. There are 8 seeds and all ranked accordingly from A-H. They are all set in stone into their groups. The bottom 8 ranked players from 32-25 are put in reverse order from A-H. So 32 will be in Group A with #1 seed, 31 will be in Group B with #2 seed, etc. etc. So now we have 8 groups of 2.
The players then put themselves into a group from 9-24. But you can only put your name in a group that has a vacant spot. Who your opponent is first round matters a lot too. After that process is finished we now are finished with Part 1 of the Steal Draft. Confusing, yeah. So now we have 8 groups of 4. Aren't we done, you might ask?
No, the stealing hasn't started yet.
The players ranked 16th-1st now get make switches and adjust where people are. Eg. say Midas REALLY wanted to get revenge on sAviOr and he was ranked 12th, he could switch his name with whoever is playing sAviOr. Alas, there are 11 other players who could possibly switch him out foiling people's plans.
Finally, those with seeds get to make the final changes and then we can see the groups. This is a very complicated procedure but it allows for players to trash talk via picks or verbal trash talk and even spark rivalries with this kind of group pickings. The OSL has a more quick and straightforward process which it makes it difficult to select a rival if you are picked late.
MSL and Double Elimination So what is double elimination? It's quite simple, really. You have to lose twice to be eliminated. In the Group of 32 play, if you lose twice in your group, you are eliminated from contention. If you win twice, that means you did NOT lose twice so you advance to the Round of 16 Single Elimination. So that means there will be one person with a 2-0 record, one person with a 2-1 record, one person with a 1-2 record, and a loser with an 0-2 record. Players with the 2-0 and 2-1 record advance.
Last season there was another double elimination round with the Group of 8 but not for this season. The second round will immediately begin as a single elimination tournament. Cool.
The games for each group will all be played in one day. That means each group on a certain day will complete all their games from Game 1, 2, Winner's, Loser's, and Tiebreak. The dates are actually very random, much thanks to SonuvBob for the link to the dates.
Note: sAviOr has anounced that he will play Terran against Zerg. No freaking joke. He will play Terran against GoRush in Group B.

The second stage of the MSL. Last season the first stage was a 16 player group stage. Now we see that the 16 player group stage gone and we see a 16 player single elimination draw as the second stage of the MSL now.
Double Elimination??? Gone. It no longer exists after the first stage. Last season they had double elimination for Group of 16 and Group of 8. Well the second stage is no longer a group stage and since it is a single elimination draw. They will be played as best of 3's. Yup. 8 best of 3's.
How is it determined who plays who? Good question. The players will all be ranked as their Group of 32 group and their place coming out of it. (B1, F2, H2, G1, etc etc.) The matchups are all predetermined by MSL and should be released once the Group of 32 is finished. If you finish second in your group, you will be playing someone who finished first in your group.
The Good, the Bad, and the Pretty The winners of this stage not only advance to the quarterfinals, they get a seed for next season's MSL! The bad news is for the losers. Since Survivor has been completely scrapped. There's only one place for them to fall and it is a bigger fall now. They go back to MSL Qualifiers. + Show Spoiler +
Thumbs Down Similar to the Warcraft III ladder system of thumbing down maps. The players who got first in their groups get to thumbs down one map each for the best of 3 single elimination draw. That means they don't have to play the map in their best of three. There are 4 maps and one of them doesn't get picked to play.
Note: July has switched teams. For the Group of 32, he was a part of MBC, so for the record I will keep him as a MBC Zerg, but starting from the round of 16 he will be an SKT Zerg.
Another Note involving a gosu Zerg: Somebody who lives to win informed us in sexy manner that OversKy and DaezanG have been drafted into the Korean Army. This problem is occurring more and more because every Korean male must serve in the Korean Army. The time for OversKy and DaezanG has come and they will enter basic training on June 25th but will later enroll in the Air Force and enter the services of the Air Force Progaming Team, Ace.

Wildcard Round Because OverSky won his Round of 16 match but cannot advance to the quarterfinals. That leaves us with 7 players who advanced. Now a wildcard round will be held like the one they held when BoxeR left Pringles MSL. The 8 losers in the Round of 16 will play each other to see who will take that last spot. This will be a single elimination best of 1 play so one loss means no advancing.
A Scheduling Note: MSL will no longer play on Saturdays. They have moved the games to Sunday but will be played at the same time.
1. (KTF P) Nal_rA 1-1 -> MSL Qualifiers 2. (STX T) Sheis 0-1 -> MSL Qualifiers 3. (Samsung P) StOrk 3-0 -> advances to Quarterfinals in place of OverSky 4. (MBC T) Light 0-1 -> MSL Qualifiers 5. This is the third stage of the MSL. The players have been whittled down to naught but eight players. The round of 16 single elimination was a best of three. As we move to the quarterfinals, there is more at stake here, the games are a best of five.
Who Plays Who? Just follow your nose... I mean KiZzBG's bracket! It's so sexy that it shows the progression of the single elimination, so you can just follow the tree and see who the next opponent of your favorite, or not so favorite players will play!
Good News, Bad News The losers will no longer be able to play for the title MSL Champion, but they fortunately remain as a seed for the next coming MSL, I am not quite sure how they will be ranked but perhaps by performance or KeSPA ranking. The winners advance to the Semifinals and are two steps away from an MSL title.
Thumbs Down in the Best of Five You'll notice that the players thumbed down a map but the map still gets played. Because it is a best of five and there are 4 playable maps, this means at least 1 map must be played twice. When the players thumb down a map, this ensures that a map that they may feel is particularly imbalance or not to their favor will not be played twice.

The fourth stage of the MSL. This is the penultimate stage before the finals. This is the where men are separated from the boys. Only 4 players remain but only two get to advance, the other two will remain as the 3rd and 4th seed. Just like the quarterfinals were, the semifinals will be played as a best of five with two maps thumbs downed. The thumbs downed maps will assure they will not be played twice in the best of five.

This is it guys. The fifth and final stage of the MSL. We've gone from a whopping 32 play orgy to 2 players duking it out for a huge place in e-Sports history. Talk about a cockfight. Like the previous two stages, the finals will be a best of five with two maps thumbed down by the players. The thumbed down maps will guarantee that that particular map will not be played twice in the 5 games.

Yes they are. I checked on FighterForum. They don't mention anything about the other two maps but these two are definitely in.

I love the maps, but I have to say, I do miss the old MSL system and how there was a uniqueness to it. (Losers go down to a separate bracket, not just groups to single elim)

How is Loki's third gas hard to get? The two natural multis [frontyard and backyard] both have gas. Even if frontyard is more open, it's not that much more vulnerable than RH3...
|

The frontyard is the 3rd gas I was talking about. I said it's not hard to get, I said its difficult to SECURE.

Which isn't generally true. Except vs T

Hmmm maybe y'all are right. But I personally think that the frontyard gas expo will be hard to defend. Especially against T and Z. It looks like its more difficult to defend than Nostalgia's natural.

Nice explantaion of this most recent tournament. Seems like a lot of changes since back in the day. How about that MSL history to, eh!? I member most of it, but the winners and runners-up were getting a little cloudy over the years. To see it back up in black and white, seeing that Nada and Savior had such a dominating role over the years.. Makes u wonder why Protoss is supposed to be such an easy race to use, eh? - - v Nal_rA was the only one, besides the recently crowned champ. Bisu, to win MSL in almost 5 years. Hats off to those two fine controlers of the Protoss race.
Anyone know where to get the maps for DL? Group A + D should be the most interesting to keep ur eye on. So nice that Nal_rA called out Boxer in his group. He's pulling no punches and setting the standard that he is going to make a big splash in this tournament or go out w/ full-intentions known. It also sucks that Reach won't be making an appearance in this league. Hopefully he'll do better in the other leagues he's in, since that's the only one he has to focus on. Nal_rA / Bisu[Sheild] Fighting!!! GL

I love TT. He is the perfect anti-hero to follow through the MSL. I want him to cheese his way all the way to the final/semifinal just to lose to a better balanced player who out-micros the cheese rush and then works his way back up from a disadvantage to shove it in TTs face. IMHO that'd be more exciting than just games with awesome macro/micro (which are cool too dont get me wrong).

Apparently the schedule was wrong, today was group E instead of B. (Changed due to WWI I guess)
Ro16 is 8T, 2Z, 2P so far? Eww...
|
With just one group left I thought it would be fun to see this years race distributions:
Those who've advanced so far: Oversky July Bisu TT Stork Nal_rA Hwasin 910 Firebathero Sea Light iloveoov Xellos Sheis
Some numbers:
Ro16: Terran: 50% (8) Protoss: 25 % (4) Zerg: 12.5 % (2) Unknown: 12.5% (2)
Ro32: Terran: 53% (17) Protoss: 25% (8) Zerg: 22% (7)
If both savior and gorush advance from the last group, the race distribution of Ro16 will be very similar to Ro32. I don't know what that proves though

GoRush thumbed down Desperado vs. Sea. Maybe he thinks he exhausted his total rapage style build that he used against Savior's T? There's a lot of thumbing down of Desperado going on: 2 ZvP, 1 ZvT, 2 TvT wanted no part of it.

The way the bracket looks currently it appears that the last cell has four players going into it. I am guessing that this is intentional and would look better than adding a bunch more boxes. Perhaps you could put something like an advance to semifinals logo in its place.
The bracket is very nice, I like it.
edit: oh, and why is Sea the only player with a tag?

A unorthodox way of doing it, yet remaining thin enough to fit within current width constraints, is to rotate it and do it vertically.

OK this bracket will fit nicely into the TL.net layout. =) what do you think?
|
United States7488 Posts
I guess I missed rA somehow, but I'd say that he is known by his tag more than almost any other progamer, and definately more than anyone else in the MSL. I don't think the same can be said about Sea.
Not all players use their original tags or sometime no tags at all. It's not exactly a consistent thing anyways, more of a preference from person to person. I was just curious, but I don't have a problem with it one way or another.
edit: I like both brackets. Nice work!
|
United States20661 Posts
I think all players should have tags, just because rA looks stupid. I mean, even KTF doesn't make him use KTF_rA, whereas all their other players must use KTF.
|
Germany / USA16648 Posts
Generally I avoid using tags whenever possible, except for new players where it IMHO can really help and well... for rA, because like semioldguy said the tag is kinda different for him.
|
Braavos36373 Posts
Sea can be just "Sea"
I like simply "Ra" but I can see how the "Nal" is like part of his name now
I actually had this problem when making LiquiScoop cards, I was not sure whether to have clantags there or not, like July[Z-zone] or savior[gm] (not even sure if savior is still in GM)
|
United States7488 Posts
There are some other players I think it would be necessary to use tags for like Yellow[name] or anyone else who takes their handle from a previous progamer.
Also how does everyone feel about capitalization? i.e. comparing Savior to sAviOr or Hwasin to HwaSIn

I don't use tags because they can change. Like we don't always see [NC]...YellOw do we?
I do have some weird thing about leaving tags to unknown, lesser skilled players, and then stripping them of it once they enter a starleague. Like I use to write reports with Much[gm], Free[gm], etc... then once they entered a league I just called them Much and Free.
A few exceptions are like Ever)P(TT... since TT is just gay imo.

Oh my bad. I don't know how I missed these posts. Such a long time ago. Hmmm I actually agree with you Hot_Bid, but out of habit a while ago, I tried memorizing the players handles by how they spelled it. Like instead of Slayers_`Boxer`, I tried to write it SlayerS_`BoxeR` and Nal_rA instead of Nal_Ra. So I would watch closely in the games for the handles on how the progamers themselves typed their names. If I haven't been able to keep up with it, for example Sheis. I don't know how he spells it so I just spell it Sheis.
I guess out of habit I do funky capitalization but for the newer players I'm mixed bag. If it really bothers people I'll adjust.
|
Braavos36373 Posts
i don't think it bothers people it's just easier for you to write
Savior Chalrenge
than having to remember
sAviOr[gm] (is he even in gm anymore?) n.Die_cHaLrEnGe

I follow jkillashark's convention, if only because certain players have, by now, iconic capitalizations. Nal_rA, SlayerS_`BoxeR`, [NC]...YellOw, [ReD]NaDa - they look ...different as Nal_Ra, Slayers_`Boxer`, [NC]...Yellow, [Red]Nada. (And of course GoRush and GGPlay look awful as Gorush and Ggplay.) This is only of course if I'm bothering to include the clantag as well; if I remove the SlayerS or the [NC] then since I'm abbreviating anyway I tend to write Boxer, Yellow. (Though I still like rA)
For newer players, I try to respect that as well. So for example, when I use the full spelling of savior's nick it's always sAviOr[gm], but otherwise it's Savior. DArKeLf[S.siR] gets to keep all that when I'm referring to his full name, but otherwise it's DarkElf.
It's pretty arbitrary in some senses, I know, but I'm keen on capitalization. Some nicks just look a lot better capitalized in the right way.

Since the players from this round of eight automatically get seeded in the next MSL, how will that work for Stork? If Oversky were to theoretically be ready to join MSL again by the time the next one rolls around would he get the spot (I'm positive he won't be ready, but just run with me on this for a moment)? I mean, Stork did lose in the round of sixteen, but I am guesing since he won the wildcard playoff he will get a seed into the next MSL, right?

* The modern name Hangul (한글) is a term coined by Ju Sigyeong in 1912 that simultaneously means "great(한) script(글)" in archaic Korean and "Korean script" in modern Korean. It is never written in Hanja, though the first syllable, han (한), if used in the sense of the word "Korean", may be written 韓. 한글 is pronounced /hangɯl/ and would be romanized in one of the following ways: o Hangeul or Han-geul in the Revised Romanization of Korean, which the South Korean government uses in all English publications and encourages for all purposes. Many recent publications have adopted this spelling. o Han'gŭl in the older McCune-Reischauer system. When used as an English word, it is rendered without the diacritics: Hangul, or sometimes without capitalization: hangul. This is how it appears in many English dictionaries. o Hankul in Yale Romanization, another common system in English dictionaries. * North Koreans prefer to call it Chosŏn'gŭl (조선글), for reasons related to the different names of Korea. * The original name was Hunmin Jeong-eum (훈민정음; 訓民正音; see history). Due to objections to the names Hangeul, Chosŏn'gŭl, and Urigeul (see below) by the Korean minority in Manchuria, the otherwise uncommon short form Jeongeum may be used as a neutral name in some international contexts.

Thanks Carnac! If you guys don't want to be old school, follow the romanization rules that I use and we'll be aite.
Eg.
iloveoov - Choe Yeon-seong Please don't spell it Choi Yeon-sung. First of all yeon and sung have the same vowel and therefore spelling the vowel as eo and u shows inconsistency. The consonant vowel ㅚ (in iloveoov's last name) should not be spelled oi cause it can be misinterpreted as 오이 instead of 외. Therefore the new Korean rules have dictated that that consonant vowel be spelled oe.
The only wrong romanization I do is people is for people who have the last name 이. The Korean governement says it should be spelled "I" instead of Lee or even the one I use Yi. But I is very ugly and Lee is just a recipe for mispronunciation. Therefore I have used Yi cause it is the most similar to the spelling and is more aesthetically pleasing.
If you guys would like help in the romanization process, I'm pretty anal about how things are spelled so I will teach you guys.

actually his name is 최연성... so obviously ㅕ and ㅓ are different vowels. therefore Yeon-Sung would be an acceptable way to romanize it. oh, and all the korean-americans that i know that have the last name 최 all spell it Choi (including my mom's maiden name) so... meh.
