Shinhan 2 OSL is over. Finished. Done. NaDa got the golden mouse in a 5-game nailbiter against Sashin, the death God Anytime. So um... what happens now?
Dude, I was in your position not more than a year ago. I would be all like huh??? What's ODT? What's OSL? Where do the players come from? Why aren't they the same players from the last OSL? If you ever catch yourself being afraid of asking questions for fear of being ridiculed, fear not, cause I have already endured the ridicule for you! I will do my best to make helpful threads for those who wish to learn more about Starleague! That is why I present to you:
The Making of the Shinhan 3 OSL Before I talk to you about how ODT works, you must understand how OSL works. In a nutshell, we have to go BACKWARDS for you to understand everything.
How the OSL works This is not an easy task but here goes. There are multiple stages of the OSL. The OSL starts off with 24 players and 6 seeds. Those 6 seeds are the 1st-6th place finishers from the last OSL.
These 6 seeds are important for the first stage of the OSL. Those 6 seeds each pick a respective player who picks in turn picks another respective player, and in turn picks another respective player. That gets us 6 groups of 4. Cool. This stage is called the Group of 24 Stage (24 강). These 6 groups play a round robin. (A round robin group means everybody plays everybody once.) After necessary tiebreakers, each group has a 1st place, 2nd place, 3rd place, and 4th place. The players who got 1st place and 2nd place in their group get to skip stage 2 which only involves the 3rd places from each group. The 4th place of each group ends his/her OSL run and gets sent to ODT.
The second stage involves all the 3rd places from each group. This stage is called the Wildcard Round. The third stage has 16 spots but only 12 advanced from the Group Stage. That means the 6 players in the Wildcard Round are fighting for the 4 remaining spots. The 6 players are split into two groups of three. These groups do another round robin. The top two of each group take their spots in Stage 3, the last place of each group is sent to ODT.
Now we have the third stage of 16 players. This is called the Tournament Stage. These 16 players play a tournament bracket until there is a winner. They each play best of threes until the semifinals and finals. The semifinals and finals are best of fives. The result is we get a top 4 and another 4 players who are ranked 5th-8th. But ONLY the top 6 from the OSL gets to stay. 5th-8th play a dual tournament style playoff and the top two get the 5th and 6th seeds.
The result: 6 players get to stay for the next OSL with seeds. 18 players get sent to ODT.
How the ODT works ODT stands for Ongamenet Dual Tournament. Koreans always have either really cute or really stupid English. The Dual stands for either a DUO that advances or a DOUBLE elimination tournament. If you want to see more cute English, look for some of africanboy's older posts though oddly his English has improved a lot. Unfortunately he's slowed down his posting rate, anyhooooo... moving on.
So, the next OSL, in this case, Shinhan 3 OSL, has 18 vacant spots. Those 18 spots can ONLY be taken by those who qualify through ODT. Since we know that two people advance from each group in a Dual Tournament. There must be at least 9 groups. In this case it's 9 groups of 4. 36 players shooting for 18 spots.
Where do these players come from? 18 failures from OSL automatically get a seat in ODT. In each of the 9 groups there are 2 players who were in Shinhan 2 OSL that DIDN'T get in the top 6. The other two spots in each group is taken by those who TOUGHED it out in the ODT preliminaries (aka offline qualifiers). HUNDREDS of player go to those preliminaries and that's where slumping pros can get stuck in for ETERNITY. (Nal_rA endured offline qualifiers for over a year.)
How do we determine who advances? Simple. Well, maybe. The top two from each group advance. Dual tournaments are played like the MSLs (Game 1, Game 2, Winner's, Loser's, Tiebreak). It's double elimination for only four players. So two wins = advancing to Shinhan 3. Two losses = offline qualifers.
What maps do they play on? They play on only 3 maps. The first two games are played on Tau Cross. The Winner's and Loser's game is played on Arcadia 2. The Tiebreaker game is played on Shin Peaks of Paekdu. Though these maps are used for ODT, they may or may not be used in Shinhan 3.
The result: 18 players advance from ODT into OSL. 6 Seeded players + 18 qualified players = 24 players. Shinhan 1 they had a cute English phrase called 23 vs 1. Shinhan 2 they had StarCraft My Way.
Do you understand now? Hopefully? If you have questions feel free to post in this thread without fear of ridicule. I'm always happy to help a fellow fan understand the ways of the Koreans. I would prefer if you didn't PM me though, some people may have the same questions so feel free to ask them in the thread. But now, let's move on to the ODT!
ODT Results and Schedule Remember there are 9 groups of 4. Dual tournament style play results in two winners. Final Thoughts Yes, as you can see the race distribution is not that equal. Protoss fans will have to cheer for only Anytime and Much. It would be SO cruel of someone if Much ends up in Anytime's group. Oh dear that would suck a lot. Terrans come into this group with a whopping count of 13 players. Zerg is a little more average with 9 (average would be 8 per race). I think this is OSL that will help me improve my abysmal TvT and improve my TvZ as well. Actually all my matchups suck. D=. Somebody told me I was good at PvP and I don't even play P.
Note that this maybe one of the very few OSLs or Starleagues that have representatives from all 11 progaming teams. eSTRO finally has gotten a player into an individual league. UpMagic has been the long awaited progamer from that team. I hear he has a good TvT so he may actually do well in this OSL. Zergs unfortunately will have compete each other and have to work on their ZvTs.
If you see the above group selections (many thanks to yubee and HonestTea), you can see that only Group F is the only group that has teammates on it. There are a lot of new up and coming players who have long awaited for their shot. Don't be TOO surprised if some of they take the OSL by storm.
I think this is gonna turn out to be a TvT final. You saw it here first.
Many thanks to those who found this informative and thanked me, jkillashark 님
lol you guys even know the engrish phrases with the races. How cute. I want Zergman and Casy to do well this OSL. Zergman's gotten a lot better... And I hope Much and Keke make it through their groups.
WoW..........thanks jkillashark that was a really great description on how the OSL is going to work. You explained everything extremely well in great detail, and therefore it was easy to understand.

ODT = Ongamenet Dual Tournament that's for sure
Not sure about the "dual part" ;D It could also come from the time where there were online prelims followed by the Challenge League then followed by the Dual League (dual standing for 2nd League) finally followed by the OSL (Ongamenet Star League)

So that's a new rule ? For this ODT we have 2 players from last OSL + 2 players from the prelims in each group. If this is true, prelims are going to get even harder -> 9 spots instead of 18, we'll never see Xellos, Ra, Reach etc... come back

That's always been the rule though I may be mistaken now that you mention it. I think it's a little off this season because some of the SKT chose to relinquish their ODT spots. Like Kingdom for example.

EDIT : My memory came back ;D 3rd group players of ODT would be qualified for the next Challenge league and avoid the prelims. So this rule isn't true anymore since there is no more Challenge League.
The SKT1 shouldn't impact anything since they were all in premlims, not in ODT.
How do the "offline qualifiers" work exactly? And does "offline" imply that there are also "online" ones? Is these any requirement to get into the qualifiers or can anyone play in them?
Offline implies that they are not shown on TV. It's also called PC Bang League, cause that's where they're played at. We can get photos and stuff at the qualifiers but it ain't shown on TV. "Online" simply means that they're shown on TV.
I actually am not sure about the second question. I think anybody can play in them but I know I'm wrong.
Just out of curiosity, how hard is it to be in the OSL league if one is in the offline preliminaries? Could players like Xellos, Nal_Ra make a comeback in the OSL anytime soon?
It is VERY hard. You have to practically win nonstop. Remember how Yooi had to endure like 17 hours of preliminaries just to get a seat in ODT? Good thing about OGN prelims is if you've accomplished more as a progamer than the others you get some byes.
But I mean you have to play lesser known pros who just study your replays all the time.
Wow... Bisu, Free, and Much all lost PvZ tiebreakers on Shin Peaks of Baekdu. They either had bad luck or the map favors Zerg. Grrrrr, this is such a depressing OSL for Protoss I hope people are ready for a shitload of TvZ matches. Much is a longshot to qualify from his group and I'd say TT has around a 50/50 chance. We could be looking at a single Protoss in this OSL, wow. I hope Anytime steams through every Z/T he faces and 3-0's SaviOr in the finals. Oh, how sweet life would be.
They need to put some island maps back in so Protoss can increase their numbers. But then Zerg would start complaining. I think either a Terran or sAviOr is gonna win this OSL. You saw it here first.
I hope once Savior finally made it he will run over all those wannabes And one Protoss in Starleague omg that's just not fair. Not a big toss fan but a Reach or some other cannon rusher would be a welcome respite in between all those epic TvZ.
well i don't see protoss complaining when some map is good for zergs-at least got some dignity. so perhaps makin one "toss map" would balance number of players from each race-even though i don't believe in good map for protoss since protoss can handle any map-it's zergs that complain mostly and terrans that like to exploit hills+other stuff :D

You don't see protoss complaining? Well, here on tl.net, i see a lot of protoss complaining =)
Well, we're talking about progamers. Zergs complain about the imbalance of island maps and T>Z imbalances but the proud and true Protoss progamers never say a word at how imbalanced some maps are. They proudly take the loss and let the statistics show that Pioneering Period and other maps are just mad Z>P imba.
My Korean isn't that amazing so I apologize if the one line translations from FiFo don't make much sense. Sometimes it's hard to go from Korean -> English. I wish I took more years of Korean school for stuff like this T_T.
Some mistakes: Han Dong Wook, who is ID'ed as Casy here, is not him, Casy is in the same team, his name is Won Jong Suh. Han Dong Wook is IOI[aLive]. And in group H, Up and Iloveoov advanced to OSL.
And moreover, OSL is going to have a new format starting in Shinhan Season 3. This news will be released soon, too. If you need any help translating or need updates on the latest news, just let me know
Sure, but I'll just wait til HonestTea, Live2Win, rinizim, or infinity21 to translate it. You can do it if you want to.
I thought the people who were in [Name] clan just copy another players' name. Like YellOw[Name] (now Yarnc), TheMarine[Name], CaSy[Name]. Han Dong Wuk is more commonly known on teamliquid as CaSy. I know his old id was ioi. You're talking about CaSy[Name] who teamliquid acknowledges as Justin or Bifrost.
If there's anything you guys think I should add, don't hesitate to say so. I hope this has been a helpful reference for those of you who want to know more about the OSL and how it comes about.

Isn't that impossible because there are rules that prevent that, right? I thought there had to be a close race distribution in the Group stages.
Oh now that you mention it, I remember a couple starleagues ago, there weren't allowed to have more than 1 Protoss in a group. Hahaha sucks for Zergs then. They gotta pick another Zerg or a DUNDUND UN TERRAN!
yea I was just about to say this. Hell I will anyways. When there are less number of players than there are groups, they don't allow people to chose that race in their group if it's already there. So even if who you want to chose in group selection ceremony isn't chosen, you still can't chose him if there's another one with the same race in your group.
Like wise, there can be no more than 2 zergs in each group, and no more than 3 terrans (eww 4 terrans in 1 group? BORING!!)
and tglstory, where did you get your information? Pgr21? I'd like to know ^^
It's a pity there's more than one protoss. If there was just one, he would be nearly as awesome as Reach. [not quite, though, because this time there's no mercury]

i think the way it goes is...
Han Dong Wook = iOi[alive] = casy (Wook brother with Cloud)
Goodfriend is awesome. I actually don't find him any more or less boring, than, say, oov, or savior, or whatever. He does have his own style - and he's one of those few terrans that still goes 2fac in TvP.
I suppose his status of best TvTer gives him a reputation for boring.
He's cool, though. You can't expect every T to innovate as much as BoxeR or TheMarine. -.-;; I like watching Goodfriend play.
Oh man, protosses are at such a premium. This reminds me of the Reach days, when he was the only toss that still had balls.
Now we have a new pair holding it down for the mantoss. Let's all prey that they make it out of the round of 24. Gogo Much! Take Nada's spot in the group!
Thanks Wip. I remember reading an interview tha talked about iloveoov and NaDa's like close friendship. NaDa I think is younger but he's been out as a progamer longer than iloveoov has.
