Note: Serviio is a free DLNA server.

Apparently, there are people out there that don't know that this is possible. Yesterday, I ran into this post.
http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewpost.php?post_id=20357403

I responded with this:
http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewpost.php?post_id=20357591

He sent me a message asking how, and I wrote up instructions. Then I realized that there might be other people who might not know how or that they can do this. So I decided to post those instructions on a blog as well, maybe help people out who don't know how.

1. Download and install Serviio:
http://serviio.org/download

2. Download the Twitch Plugin for Serviio:
http://forum.serviio.org/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=9216

3. Cut and paste the plugin (which should be twitch.groovy) into the Plugins folder for Serviio. The default location is:
C:/Program Files/Serviio/plugins
(note: the Backslashes should be replaced by forward slashes. Backslashes are used for computer locations in this blog because TeamLiquid apparently doesn't recognize Forward Slashes for some reason)

4. Go to your task manager and under Processes, make sure ServiioService.exe is running (it should be following the installation). ServiioConsole wont run without it. As a general rule, if it's off or you can't find it, go to Run on your task bar (assuming you're running Windows) and type in services.msc. Find Serviio, right click it, and make sure it's turned on. Here, you can also fidle with the settings as to whether to automatically start Serviio when your computer starts or not. By default, it's set to automatically start when your computer is turned on.

Now, your GUI for Serviio is going to be ServiioConsole.exe. Default location after installation will be
C:/Program Files/Serviio/bin. I would recommend making a shortcut for the console for your desktop.

5. Start ServiioConsole.exe. Go the Library > Online Sources and click Add. For Source Type, choose "Web Resource". For the Source URL, insert the channel URL. For example, GOM's new twitch channel is http://www.twitch.tv/exp

For display name, choose what you want it to be labeled as on your TV. For this example, I chose to put in "GSL".

For Media Type, click Video. And to finish, click "Add". Back at the console, finally click "Save".

6. And you're done. If your Smart TV Is connected on the same network as your Computer is, The Serviio option should now appear on your SmartTV as one of your choices under Sources. Turn on your SmartTV and wait for Serviio option to come up on Sources. May take a few seconds for your TV to detect it on your network.

Once you find it, find and click the Online folder, and your channels should be there. "Live" is the highest quality.

7. Enjoy watching Twitch on your SmartTV

Post questions or problems you may have here. You can also try just sharing some folders on your computer with videos in them. On a different computer that ran Windows Vista, I had to disable some Firewalls to get ANY video to share with Serviio. So try modifying some Firewall settings if you're having issues with Serviio not being able to share ANY video.

I'm going to try this when I get home. Thanks for the information.

Previously I had to use the smart TV (samsung) built-in browser to navigate to TL then click on the stream link. It was quite slow and cumbersome (the built in browser sucks).

I mostly use allshare for all of my DLNA needs but I've heard of serviio and even have it installed despite never using it.

Great post, 5/5!

Do you sometimes have problems finding the added streams on the DLNA client, like say you added the GSL stream, know its online but on the client it says no streams can be found? I get that problem pretty often and it annoys the hell out of me, hence I started using PS3 Media Server which in turn other issues, and right now Plex.

Client doesn't ever say "no streams found" on Serviio. They just don't show up. It's never given me a problem with Twitch, but I don't watch Twitch on Smart TVs very often. It usually loads pretty quickly. For all the Serviio plugins, it sometimes it takes a little bit of time and some refreshing for some of the videos to load, but they get in eventually.

I did test it out to see if it worked before writing this blog, though. And it still worked fine.

Wow, this sounds pretty cool. I don't have a Smart TV but if I did I would totally be using this so I don't have to bring my laptop to the livingroom to watch on the TV.

I followed this word for word, but there is nothing in the folder online on my Samsung smart tv. I'm trying to watch fight games streams from twitch.tv if that helps.

List of suggestions (Try them in this order):
1. Make sure you have your firewall settings correct. Try disabling it temporarily while trying to get it to work.
2. Try pushing "Force Refresh" on Serviio under the Library tab.
3. Go in and out of folders on your TV to refresh. Preferably after doing the "Force Refresh" above. Wait a little bit, it sometimes takes a while for it to show up.

If that doesn't work, send some screenshots of the relevant screens on your computer.

Just to clarify, your TV CAN see Serviio as one of its sources, correct? And you downloaded the twitch plugin and copy+pasted it into your plugins folder?

If none of my suggestions work, post in the Twitch Plugin topic in the link I posted for the plugin (#2).

it's also worth noting that most people neglect to set the proper profile for their upnpav client (tv/media player) or controller (smartphone app, etc.), which lets stuff not show up sometimes.

another thing is that you need to hit "force refresh" in the serviio console usually once before you start watching it after a longer while because the data it extracts for serviio may be outdated by the time you try to start watching.

Hi,
Your blog is super helpful. Done with all setups. It's working fine.
This will only help for files that you have shared. What about online video calls, can I see that on my TV using Serviio.
I have never used Twitch. Just want to see my files from Tablet to the TV. Thanks again

Some of my instructions have become outdated, since it's been a few months since I first made this post. First of all, update to the latest version of Serviio if you haven't already. Update to the latest version of the plugin if you haven't already. If you haven't already, take a look at your computer's Firewall settings and make sure Serviio can get through them.

And, of course, follow the instructions in the link, namely this one:

read and follow the instructions in this post (since August 2014, Twitch has messed up their Encoding)

i've had to recompile ffmpeg to make sure we stay gpl compliant and i can actually redistribute this fix without zip getting DMCA'd or something. but i think it'll still work fine in most situations as this only removes some optimizations and the fraunhofer aac decoder.

WINDOWS:
here's ffmpeg.exe, 32bit, v2.3.3 (source): download, to be placed in serviio\lib\
and here's the 64bit compile: download (same version/source/patch)

I myself haven't tested out the plugin in a while, but I did update it with those instructions and will be testing it out soon.

Edit: I have tested it out the new instructions, and I can confirm that it works. Twitch is working fine via Serviio on my Smart TV.
